Baker Mayfield Finishes Season With Rare Numbers

January 6th, 2025

Baker Mayfield gave fans a reason to applaud this year.

Yeah, it seems that the signing of Baker Mayfield back in the spring of 2023 was a pretty slick move.

We all know the story. Mayfield was at a crossroads in his career. Two loser franchises dumped him in the wake of him nearly pulling off an upset of the Chiefs on the road in the playoffs in 2020.

Lying on the landfill of NFL quarterback busts, the former No. 1 overall pick was snatched up by the Rams in an emergency situation, played some good ball and was looking for a team that would allow him to bet on himself.

With the steady pushing of Bucs coach Todd Bowles, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht took a flier on Mayfield and had him to compete (allegedly) to succeed Tom Brady.

Mayfield had a career year last year and a career year this season. In fact, Mayfield had such a strong performance in his second year with the Bucs, very few humans have had better as an NFL signal-caller.

Per NFL Research by way of Nick Shook of NFL.com, Mayfield finished the 2024 regular season with a 70-plus percent completion percentage, threw for 4,500 passing yards and also had 40 touchdown passes. Only two quarterbacks had equaled that before Mayfield became the third in league history.

So yeah, Joe thinks that $4 million flier the Bucs took on Mayfield sure did pay off.

Gee, you’d think a guy with numbers like that could sniff a Pro Bowl…

  2. firethecannons Says:

I could care less about pro-bowl–thats a joke! I like that Baker is experienced in game situations of all kinds. Game is going south but Baker finds a way to rally the troops and pull off a win. He is very experienced in big games. He is good and he is a competitor.

  3. Leopold Stotch Says:

Gotta say as much as I wanted Trask to win, this has worked out very well and I’m happy for Baker and our franchise. He won me over a while ago, and while it’s not perfect at times, it sure is fun and I’m glad we have him as our QB. Before we drafted Trask, I was lowkey hoping we could pick him up and he could learn under Brady for a bit… Funny how things work out.

  4. Beeej Says:

    yeah but QBR….

  5. Canabuc Says:

I was also rooting for Trask before last season as I thought Baker was washed but as a true fan was going to support whomever the coaches felt was the best option.

There are times he gets happy feet and makes mistakes trying to do to much.
But overall he has played at a high level and has single handedly won us games by never quitting and putting the team on his back.

True franchise quarterback and at a bargain. If Licht is smart, the 20 million dollars he is saving over having say Lawrence he will invest wisely in free agency and we can have a contender for years!

  6. MadMax Says:

Baker bacon….thats what we feed washington next!

  7. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Trask would’ve thrown 100 touchdowns!

  8. toopanca Says:

I was critical of Baker for a couple of plays in the Dallas game.

And, I usually despise the hyperbole about a player putting a team on his shoulders and carrying it to victory.

And, too many times, I have seen Jameis, and Baker, and Brett Fabre, get caught up in the desperation heroics and follow some plays that have you jumping and shouting with plays that leave you groaning and dejected over the course of a few heartbeats. And, I know those guys are really giving it their all.

    But, …

Today, I really can’t think of another quarterback who wins that game. Baker should have been wearing a cape, but he never got out of control.

Time and again, he ran when he had to, but he didn’t stop looking down field as he kept plays alive. The touchdown throw to McMillen in the end zone- wow! That was not the ragged edge, but rather the laser sharp edge between Super Baker and Bad Baker, and it was Super Baker all the way!

It seems insane to call it a steal to pay a player tens of millions of dollars a year. But, the Baker who was out there today earned every bit of it that he possibly could!

That was more than a Pro Bowl performance; it was an All Pro performance!

    Go Bucs!!!

  9. MadMax Says:

What I love most about Baker is that dawg in him…those runs he did yesterday, he never slid! Drop those pads and go for it! It scares me at times because i dont want him to get hurt, but then he bounces right back up and says lets go!

Yep, like I said last year, we got our franchise QB… and the haters were hating me, lol, whatever.

  10. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

71.45% Baker Mayfield’s completion percentage for the entire season
Brady, as GREAT as the GOAT was, never sniffed 69%
Mahomes, as good as he is, has never sniffed 68%
No one, by their 8th season, ever broke into the 70’s.
Baker is the first, bois. What was that about Baker being inaccurate??
    I can’t hear you…

  11. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

The NFL cares nothing about ESPN’s QBR. They rely solely on their passer rating to judge a quarterbacks talent.

  12. MadMax Says:

Baker is a DAWG! Look at those runs when he takes off…scares me sometimes though….need him to stay healthy

  13. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Trask could have been 19-9 !

  14. Gipper Says:

    Davyboy,

No big deal but this is Baker’s SEVENTH season. He is just getting started. His ceiling is higher. Everyone saw that laser to McMillan on the flag route. Next time anyone doubts Baker, remember that throw. Brady seemed to be impressed by it. Not sure how you could not be impressed with final drive starting on Tampa 5 yard line. Seemed like everything was 2nd and long. We know how that worked out.

  15. Gipper Says:

Finally interceptions are overrated. Coaches use them to take themselves off the hook. Few on this website mentioned Baker’s interception today. Maybe we are all learning?

  16. WanderingWallflower Says:

Completing 70% with a strong amount of throws that weren’t cookies. Brady had two pretty big seasons here and probably deserves to be considered to have had the best season ever for a Buccaneer QB because; Super Bowl Champions.

Get to the NFC Championship, Baker’s season nears equal standing. Make it to New Orleans, the cake is his, imo.

Another opinion. Is Pat McAfee in playing shape? I know it’s less attractive a proposition several years down the line, but I’m not comfortable with Browning.

Calling Pat McAfee! Pat McAfee, please pick up the pewter telephone. Pat McAfee, please answer the Pewter telephone.

Oh. Hey, Joe, 40’s got to ya, that should be 70%, I’d guess, in the final paragraph.

  17. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

    Thanks Gipper

  18. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

On the run that 40 yard Laser to McMillan was!!!
Is there hope Godwin will be back for the playoffs??

  19. Mac Says:

What is update on Sir Voc and Godwin? Man if we could get them back I’d be excited. I’d almost argue with how terrible Britt and lb is right now Sir is more important need right now.

  20. lambchop Says:

Baker was the perfect QB after the Brady years. This is how he played in Cleveland, except they were mired in coaching changes and had a diva WR.

If we can get a pass rush in the offseason and an upgrade over Jamel Dean and KJ Britt and co., this team can win in spite of Todd. I would rather upgrade the roster than start a new coach, scheme, etc. Some how we have to retain Liam and he gave a hint in his presser a few days ago that he may not want a HC job right away. Although, as Joe pointed out, the NE job sounds nice but who would want that pressure of starting from scratch with the history that NE has had? That’s a lot of pressure.

    yeah but QBR…

    ———

yeah, qbr has to be the most subjective stat ive ever seen. for instance..

    last week, baker’s stats:

    27/32, 359 yds, 84.4% cmp, 11.2 avg, 5 td, 0 int, 153 passer rating

    this week stats:

    21/32, 221 yds, 65.6% cmp, 6.9 avg, 2 td, 1 int, 93.4 passer rating

and his qbr this week is higher than last week. 91.2 vs 90.1

    make it make sense!!!

it’s supposed to be a qb stat, but literally the only thing he had better in this game vs last week was the rushing yards.. 68 vs 2.

  22. George Nostej Says:

Been a Baker fan since Oklahoma. He is my favorite player of all time over 30 years of watching Sooner football. I’ve become a strong Buc fan now because of him. LFG.

  23. Ex Browns Fan Says:

Bowles is his 8th HC in the NFL

    Had two in college

  24. sunny Says:

hmmm does this mean he didn’t regress this season like so many expected??

pretty sure i said after last season ended that no one had seen his ceiling yet.

he was playing lights out for the *BROWNS* before his injury, then traded to an even worse team with zero weapons. matt rhule as coach, traded cmc at the beginning of the season.

and what the browns did to him when they let him go deserves all the karma they are getting now. they didn’t just trade him off after he played injured for them and drop him for a serial predator, they also trashed his reputation on the way out by implying that he was some kind of locker-room cancer, immature, etc.

that’s literally the only place that has ever had anything bad to say about his leadership, including when he was in college and arguably a lot more immature.

  25. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

ESPN likes to look at it as a proprietary formula of theirs and feels as though they have no obligation to explain to anyone how it works.

  26. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

    Concerning the QBR

  27. MadMax Says:

Godwin is done for the season guys, please stop. Trust me, he would love nothing more than to be out there with his brothers. I hope he heals 100 and we can afford to re-sign him…the ball is in his court….plus the healing gods.

  28. adam from ny Says:

yeah he’s hit his prime and settled in here…

he was young and decent in cleveland, then things went awry…

it happens in the nfl on occassion…

dude bounced around for a minute or two, the media made a mountain out of a mole hill, and were calling him a journeyman…

things basically just didn’t work out in carolina after cleveland blew up in his face…
(and carolina was a legit hot mess at the time, and only now seems to be on the right path with canales)…

he signs with us, settles in, starts to look like the original draft pick people anticipated, has his feet fully set and is hitting his prime rn…

another big score by licht and company…

good for baker…and good for the bucs…it’s a win win…

i bet even tb12 is even impressed with how baker came in and filled the shoes at the qb spot here…

it ain’t easy to fill the shoes of tommy b…just ask aaron rodgers

  29. Daniel Dream Says:

Clevelander here whose second favorite NFL team was always the Bucs but has been glad to call the Bucs his favorite team since the day the Browns signed with the devil. I couldn’t have been happier when the Bucs signed Mayfield! I knew this team would appreciate what he can do. No one is perfect, but Baker has what it takes to win and gives it his all, and I’m glad he’s on this team, let’s go Bucs!!! Superbowl!!!

  30. Kenneth Mobley Says:

7 years in the league and now another excuse for baker is interceptions are overrated? But it’s an turnover for the opposing team, baker threw 7 interceptions in a 4 game stretch where people blamed only the defense, but it’s games baker struggled to get to 200 yards and also elevate the team like Brady did to win a Super Bowl, baker is okay! But 2 years of hoping the saints lose and Atlanta lose so Bucs can be elevated to win the division is great?? Baker needs to atleast make to the superbowl and win . Baker has had every excuse from coaching to lack of talent…etc but at some point baker needs to build consistency through out 4 quarters of a game against playoff caliber teams/elite teams and prime time games. We know the defense is not that good but they can get you some stops . Baker with what people are seeing needs to take the next step and become elite and elevate the team psss the second round not an game losing interception like last year in Detroit

  31. sunny Says:

interceptions have always been overrated. brady had multiple games with FOUR interceptions. the three highest career interceptions are baker, patrick mahomes, and josh allen. not exactly terrible company for him to be in.

  32. Ted Says:

Baker and Sam Darnold are proof that coaching and heart matters. As many high draft picks are busts it’s nice to see a few take advantage of a second chance at living up to their potential.

  33. Bucs33Saints14! Says:

I sure miss the good ole days when Vinny Testaverde would hip slide short of the sticks. Not Baker. He is “True Grit” personified. That 4Q scramble was key to the drive and the win. Not to mention that toss back to Bucky while scrambling (man, can Bucky fly!). And finally, that strike to McMillan — excellent throw and excellent catch.

  34. BucU Says:

Baker is a dawg. Those second half scrambles were amazing. Kept the Bucs in the game. He deserves a lucrative extension as soon as the season ends.

  35. Rhonda Parsley Says:

    Ex Brown’s fan

Baker had 3 head coaches in college: Kingsbury, Stoops, Riley.

  36. Marky mark Says:

Munch boy has disappeared but Trask to the Idiocy is still around. Trask will be cut buddy.

  37. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I don’t think the Bucs brass ever gave into an extension before a players current contract expired. Mayfield may become the first to break that trend if he continues playing like he is.

  38. TheBigSombreo Says:

If yall haven’t watched the Baker / Eli Manning Disguise video on fan day at OneBuc Palace, then you are missing out on Baker… the guy is an all around great guy.

    All fabs should embrace him.

What more does a fan base want or need in a QB, that is not named Tom Brady (who was the grwatest QB the NFL has ever seen, as far as success goes). Asking your team’s QB to be TB12 is unrealistic.

Baker has been plenty for the fan base.

If you want to pick at the Bucs… start asking why is it so difficult for the defense to get more stops on pretty much every NFL team… no matter the experience level of the opposing QB. Why can’t the defense get more stops and punts? What is the deal there?

Lastly, the referees suck. And ai mean, they are literally killing the games.

It amazes me that Cleveland wanted Deshaun Watson over Baker.

  41. BucsMinisterFuller Says:

take that designed QB run and throw that play right in the trash.

  42. Marky mark Says:

Kenneth Mobely is another non Bucs fan national Troll who for reasons that have nothing to do with Football have decided against Baker. I have seen this before. If you want to get rid of somebody you set an impossible goal just to keep their job. We will see what happens Sunday but i dont think.the Commanders are ready for playoff intensity. Baker has a track record of crushing both Pennsylvania’s teams in the first round of the playoffs. Also they just got off a lackluster win so they are ready to crush someone. Hello Chargers. Bring back the Duck.

  43. stpetebucsfan Says:

“can win in spite of Todd.”

Whoop there it is! Gotta get in a gratuituous jab at Todd for doing what

    WINNING!

AGAIN…I get Todd’s flaws, he’s boring and unexciting, he’s a defensive guy who spent too much time playing not to give up scores instead of thinking of scoring.

This year he has a second year with a QB he can trust and adds an OC who gainied his trust and guess what. Todd started taking the ball after winning coin tosses! He started letting Coen/Baker take a few more chances.

Todd is NEVER going to be the wild gambler but dislike him all you want the disrespect is getting embarrassing, not for Todd but for the direspectful people who know a fraction about football as Todd.

  44. Dragon3121 Says:

Brady’s comp % down because of throw aways. He was immobile if play broke down instead of throwing a pick he threw it away more times than not. Also he rarely had true #1 receivers in his career.

  45. Gipper Says:

    Kenneth Mobley,

How many games this year did the Bucs lose because of interceptions? As I have said previously, Baker had 3 INT’s in first NO games which Bucs won 51-24. Yesterday in second NO game Baker had one INT. We know how that game ended. For the season in games where Baker had one or more INT’s for the season, the team played .500. Sort of like the way they played all season. My point on turnovers is that coaches can shift blame away from poor defense or poor coaching by saying “the turnovers killed us.” Don’t recommend fumbles or interceptions but they are part of the game. Fat guys sitting on couches have something to yell at the TV about but that’s about it.

  46. TheShaz Says:

Baker reminds me of Bret Favre so much. The way he plays can get you in trouble, but when he is ON, he is ON.

None of.us thought the Bucs would snag a legit franchise QB after Brady hung up the cleats. But they did.

  47. jarrett Says:

You should never underestimate the stupidity of the Jimmy Haslam ownership of the Cleveland Browns.

  49. orlbucfan Says:

I don’t follow college football so was not familiar with Baker except the Heisman trophy bit. I’m a fan now. What a feisty, smart, team-first player. I loved the lateral he did that got the Bucs a ton of yards. And his throws are like something shot from a laser. Unreal. I can see why Bowles admired him. Kudos to him and Licht for pulling Baker out of the NFL dumpster and bringing him here. Now, I’m hoping Chris Godwin won’t retire. He’s not just a great football player, he’s a smart one. I wouldn’t blame him if he did.

  50. Gipper Says:

    orlbucfan,

With you on Godwin. Has best hands of any NFL receiver. Tampa offense would have been even better this year if CG had stayed healthy. That guy has a great ability to gain yards after catch (YAC). Hoping he will come back strong next year. Trey Palmer has been a disappointment so my guess is he will be gone and Ryan Miller will be developed as a possession receiver.

  51. Joe Says:

What is update on Sir Voc and Godwin?

Spoke with SirVocea Dennis last week. His goal of returning for the playoffs (he never offered a date) is still in reach. He said no way he could have gone on Sunday.

Godwin? Last Joe “heard” but it’s not official in any way, well, Godwin returning in the postseason doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

  52. unbelievable Says:

SVD coming back would be huge.

Agree that we won’t see Godwin again this year.

  53. orlbucfan Says:

Thanks for the update, Joe. I sure hope SVD can make it back Sunday night. I am concerned about CG14. Two cheap illegal season-ending (and deliberate) injuries at this point in his career? This is a contract year for him. Hence, the retirement comments from me. Man, I hope he comes back, but I understand perfectly why if he calls it quits.

  54. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

Sorry Mobley, Baker has already proved you “Baker Crybabies” wrong in almost every way conceivable. Is he perfect? Far far from it but he sure is good enough to win any team the big prize. It’s called “beating a dead horse”. But good luck with it.
I will say this because it is interesting. He will continue to throw interceptions because he has a howitzer somehow connected to the right side of his torso and its disguised as his arm and in his mind it’s a challenge to try and get that ball to fit into that “tight window” that few others would even try, let alone make. And sometimes he fails but it sure is fun for him to try it and equally fun for us to watch him try it and he knows it. So for now we have to take the exciting highs and frustrating lows of his interceptions at least until we don’t find it entertaining anymore.

  56. Gipper Says:

    orlbucfan,

You are absolutely right about the cheap, illegal tackle that ended Chris Godwin year. That hip drop tackle applied by Baltimore LB, Roquan Smith, was dirty and is designed to injure. The NFL should have punished that guy by making him miss the same amount of time that Chris will miss while recuperating.

  57. lozo26 Says:

Anyone hear from OBJs dad recently? OBJ can’t hold down a roster spot and Baker is a top 5 QB. Maybe Baker wasn’t OBJs problem in Cleveland?

  58. Kieran Says:

Getting Baker was like buying Palantir at $8 Bucs

  59. RTCle Says:

Part of the reason Stefanski had a problem with baker was over emphasizing turnovers. I have been a baker fan from day one. The problem with people who are upset about the occasional pick, is they don’t recognize that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take! Baker is a gritty guy with nerves of steel. He doesn’t want to throw picks but it’s part of laying it all on the line. That’s what is going to lead him to the promised land some day, not listening to the haters that refuse to give him credit. He knows in his heart that he’s gotta take a shot and if he falls he’s gonna get back up and do it again. He doesn’t stop believing in his team and he is not gonna give up. I have seen some atrocious games where Stefanski was clearly trying to bury and embarrass him and even so he brought a valiant effort all the way through while getting pummeled in the meat grinder.

  60. GoneGator Says:

Also, Since 2023, Baker Mayfield has the most passing touchdowns in the league, with 69.

  61. Cosimo De Medicinal Says:

Regarding the picks, it’s the first year under coen’s system and a lot of these mistakes can be cleaned up. I can see Baker cleaning it down to 10 picks next year while still producing at a top rate.

Regarding Stefanski and Baker, here’s all you need to know. In their last season together, after Baker had helped Stef win CotY and a playoff game the year before, Stefanski knowing that Baker had a bum shoulder called for Baker to throw the ball 50 times in December on the road in Pitt with TJ Watt against a rookie undrafted RT making a spot start. This is with a “super bowl” ready offense made to run the football. The Browns lost and Baker got sacked a lot, i think 9x but I may be wrong. Baker called out Stefanski’s intentions and gameplans, then the Browns started looking for an adult in the room.

  62. Student of the Game Says:

My week 1 prediction was 11 or 12 wins. 10 wins the division this season! For the guys mentioning an extension and more money for Mayfield, he himself would say get more talent with the money, like a sack master. He wants a Super Bowl title!

  63. Kenton Smith Says:

Stefanski held his press conference today. Stefanski wanted to be the face of the organization. He was jealous of Baker. What a whiny little bitc.. Now he’s a yes man to whoever he is told to be. He lost play calling control this year. After yesterday’s loss (team gave up) he scapegoated a couple coaches and now he’s in the market for a QB as well as an offensive coordinator. He has control over nothing and that’s more control than he deserves. He has no voice in even his own team’s future and he is hanging by a thread. But being the giant pus.. that he is he will take the degradation. And you had better believe Baker loves Todd Bowles.

    ==================================
Your account of Baker’s last game with the Brown’s was spot on. Stefanski let Baker get mauled by a third string OT while never giving the OT any help. The press tried to bait Baker into hanging it on the young tackle. Baker just told the truth saying the kid had no help from backs or TE’s. Stefanski and Andrew Berry are impressed with themselves. Kind of hard to see why. They have the #2 pick in the draft this year which they will no doubt blow again. Really glad that Baker escaped that mess in Cleveland. Thanks to his self confidence he never folded when things got tough. That’s the kind of guy you want as your QB. By now most Tampa fans are realizing he has a great arm and can make all the throws.
