Trash Third-Down Conversion Percentage

December 1st, 2024

“What happened, Baker?”

Joe’s eyes nearly bugged out seeing this stat from the official NFL gamebook of the Bucs’ escape from Charlotte.

The Stinking Panthers have the third-worst yards-per-game allowed average in the NFL (the Bucs are the fourth-worst). So a team ought to be able to move the ball on such a cotton candy-soft defense, right?

Well, not exactly. Not the sleepwalking Bucs today.

The Bucs, with a superior quarterback, a superior offensive line, a superior running attack and with a future Hall of Fame receiver, acted on third downs as if they were facing the 2002 Bucs defense.

The Bucs converted on just 16 percent of their third downs. Yes, 16 percent!

The Bucs found themselves in 12 third down predicaments. They converted just two. TWO!

How?

Man, if there was such a thing as a terrible win, today’s win was it. Joe cannot remember the Bucs pulling out a thrilling win and it felt nearly as bad as a loss.

They will complain win or lose, unless it is a blowout

Joe you need to relax. They played badly and the soft defense was awful. But to expect us to pound another nfl team, let alone a division rival is dumb. Look at our last three games in charlotte going back to 2022. All ugly games yet we won 2 of those three. Division games weird stuff happens. Enjoy the win and have a bromosa. We need to not wins whenever we can get them. They should bounce back next week

Well, this may be just what the Bucs needed, an ugly win. It may motivate them in practice etc. This was a trap game. Like they always say Any Given Sunday. Hopefully they look deep into this game. The penalties were crazy. The punter ends up penalized. Barton got the yips early in the game.

Every game Todd is coaching is a trap game

So, theyre regressing to the mean?

  6. Lightningvinny Says:

The 30 seconds to get a FG was pretty impressive though,,, I didn’t really think they could do it

  7. Buc4evr Says:

Bucs receivers were not getting open and Baker was holding on to the ball too long. Bucs needed to go back to the short game and didn’t until later in the game. Poorly called offensive game by Coen. Poorly called defense by Todd as usual.

Our Oline was soft in pass protection…

They won. Nothing else really matters.

It felt like the wins of the lost decade.

Joes – you have the press pass. Ask you know who – but while you’re at it, the most egregious insult continues to be the super-off coverage non-defense as in the end of the first half and end of regulation. No, injuries aren’t an excuse. Wide open guys are the result of zone busts not guys getting g beat in man.

Ask him. Press him to answer, although he may not be familiar with press since he never does it.

  12. Saskbucs Says:

One of the most painful wins I can remember and less than a year ago I watched these guys win 9-0 to go to the playoffs. At least I watched solid defense in that game.

  13. Marky Mark Says:

Trash to the future. Now we Know what Bowles knew. Trask sucks.

  14. Rod Munch Says:

Baker’s QBR for today was 9.

That’s terrible, probably the worst he’s played since he’s been here (although I’d have to check as he’s had a number of awful games).

Anywho, lets just hope it’s a one off and he bounces back.

  15. Dave Pear Says:

Baker sucked today. He was trash today. So was the entire team.

The head coach can make everyone on is team suck at once, he has that talent. This guy is so bad, he could have reduced Warren Sapp to playing like Logan Hall. Invisibility is a skilll Todd is adept at coaching.

When you are playing behind the sticks due to penalties or sacks, it’s much harder and that is what they faced. And what happened to the Rachad White screen passes

  17. JD Still Says:

So , Mayfield had a QBR of 9? Surprising , I didn’t think it would have been that high, 100 million dollars doesn’t get you much these days, but after watching Mayfield get stomped into the ground on a sack and limp to the sidelines , then watching Kyle Trask come in for two plays , a run and a pass for nine yards , no fumbles , no interceptions , just positive yardage, ( which Mayfield butt kissers on here used as a stupid excuse to insult the man! What do you expect after two plays?) , then , seeing Mayfield come back in and promptly , on the very next play , throw another interception! It makes you wonder , next year, after Kyle moves on to bigger and better things , and Mayfield , Evans , and Godwin are all a year older, who are the Mayfield sycophant’s going to blame ?

  18. Kenton Smith Says:

JD- anyone else but you KNOWS that the 30 second drive that Baker orchestrated to get us to overtime was the work of an elite quarterback in this league. What bigger and better things is Trask gonna be part of? Something better than a team that has played postseason games 5 years in a row? And Rod Munch- he’s our leader and we’re still in the mix. You say he’s terrible? A terrible game you say? His late game play looked like an MVP performance. Might have been 2 or 3 QBs in football who could have done that.

  19. JD Still Says:

Kenton: Carolina had the ball within field goal range and tried to get a little closer for the winning score and fumbled , the ball was stripped , a good defensive play and our elite kicker saved us, you seem to be the only one on here that thinks Mayfield and his 9 QBR had anything to do with winning the game.

  20. orlbucfan Says:

Kenton, about all you can do with the imbeciles calling themselves fans on here is either ignore them, razz them, or both. I do both. Glazers aren’t firing Bowles and Coen will be here next season. We do need Sir Licht to draft D players, and some wideouts. Also, Special Teams needs to be beefed up. I still have read ZERO as to what happened to Camarda??

  21. Ed Says:

The outside run call to White was the worst play call of the game. He lost 5 yards. Slamming Tucker up the middle is 90% good to get a first down. If you want to go to the next level you must take advantage of the talents of your players. In a tight space on your 4 yard line a slow back like White trying to bounce outside turned into a disaster. He was stopped in another earlier game in a similar situation. White is not a power back.

Likewise 2 throws to a small receiver like Sheppard in the end zone was stupid. Roll out Baker and throw it to Otton or Evans. Maybe even the other tight end and while we are at it how about giving the ball to Vea on the 1 yard line for once!

On positive note Bowles finally got it right saving those 3 timeouts at end of regulation. Evans made plays and McLauglin came through from 52! That was a great 30 second drive by Mayfield.

Let’s be realistic. That was a bad game. 2 bad picks, taking stupid sacks, poor 3rd down conversion rate. Open your eyes. You can dip a turd in chocolate, but it’s still a turd.
