Tone-Setter Calijah Kancey

December 30th, 2024

Sack No. 7 1/2 came early yesterday for defensive tackle Calijah Kancey.

He leads the team in that department but Joe likes how Kancey’s takedowns often set a tone and aren’t in garbage time.

While the Bucs blew out the Panthers yesterday 48-14, it’s easy to forget this was a close game early. With 25 seconds remaining in the first quarter, the Bucs led 10-7 and Carolina had the ball: 3rd-and-9 and their 31 yard line.

Kancey lined up on the left edge, stunted inside and used his blur-like explosiveness to drop quarterback Bryce Young (video below). The first sack of the Bucs’ five-sack day.

Those kinds of early hits get in a quarterback’s head and can prove so important.

Kancey missed five games with a calf issue but leads the team tackles for loss, sacks and quarterback hits.

Damn, if this guy can every play a full season, he’ll find himself with postseason honors.

    Great day it was

  2. ModHairKen Says:

Is he about to become this generation’s Warren Sapp?

  3. Bill Kilmer Says:

Yes his sack, was at the right time and was needed as the game was close.

  4. Teflon Don Says:

Where are the fans that were calling this guy a bust?

  5. SB Says:

@Teflon Don. Those usually aren’t ‘fans’.

  6. BakerFan Says:

Also, the Right CB did an excellent job jamming the receiver… Nice job all those two parts. If they do this on a regular basis, the defense will come around and be good.

They didnt know, didnt see…untouched….thats how its done Kancey…and i have to give credit to Todd here too.

  8. El HEFE Says:

I know injuries play a big part of why our defense can’t be like that every game but damn when we play man defense we are a top 5 defense get healthy Bucs

  9. Jerseybuc Says:

N of course gets no love. Carter of the eagles gets blown kancey just as good probably better. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  10. Kayla Says:

Logan Hall totally opened the door for him on that stunt. Give him his cred, Joe!

  11. Gipper Says:

Would be really great to have Kancey, Vea, and Myles Garrett on the field at the same time. Poor linebacking and secondary play could be hidden for another year.

  12. Jeffrey Becker Says:

i love how he sold the edge rush before stunting. almost hiding behind the push alongside him. so often guys stunt too early. part of this play, though, is terrible RB blocking not sure what he was doing there. turned away at the snap and never even looked right

  13. Jeffrey Becker Says:

gipper – the second i heard he was leveraging the browns i got excited for this very scenario. we might even be his first choice

Teflon Don: Bunch of dumbo hot air on here posing as “fans.” I’m glad Kancey is FINALLY healthy cos man, he is quick for a big guy. That sack sure shows it. Wowsers! That was a perfect execution by all involved. I noticed more action and healthy players on D yesterday. Thrilled that Bucs won, but I sure wasn’t expecting the blowout. 10-7, Bucs!!

  15. Bucamania Says:

Imagine if Vea and Kancey had a stud DE to work with

  16. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

The burst, explosion, and power he plays with is incredible but my favorite thing is the aggressiveness he plays with. I honestly don’t see that type of aggression outside of Lavonte, Winfield, and Vita on this defense. This man gets it and takes it to a whole new level. If we had a pass rusher and another ILB to go with it. It would be amazing

  17. An Erection For Sacks Says:

Among a long list of contenders, Kancey is my favorite young Buc!

This guy is going to be fun to watch!!

Now if he can learn to start a season healthy.
