Todd Bowles: Bucs Defensive Backs Removed Heads From Buttocks

December 29th, 2024

So halftime social media buzz got a shot of juice today when Todd Bowles told the Buccaneers Radio Network that defensive backs needed to get their heads out of their collective asses.

It was a flashback to the soundbite era of Bucco Bruce Arians.

The soft Bucs zone defense was extra fluffy in the first half, so Bowles wasn’t off the mark. He was asked about the comment after the game.

Bowles cracked a grin, laughed and noted that his halftime take was “kind of self-explanatory. I don’t know what to say after that.”

That comment “kind of takes care of itself,” Bowles added. “We had that discussion and they got it out [of their asses].”

What no doubt infuriated Bowles was old man Panthers receiver Adam Thielen getting behind his defense, specifically Tykee Smith and Jordan Whitehead with 50 seconds remaining in the first half. (Video below)

But that was it for the Panthers’ scoring. The defense closed out the game like champs.

Jamal Dean is the captain of cover no one in the zone scheme.

  2. Hydra Says:

He is the best pro coach Baker has had by far, the defense had a ton of injuries this year and they still have a chance to make the playoffs

  3. Citrus County Says:

Listening to the game on radio I was surprised to hear Bowles say that. That is out of character for him. Why now ? Was that statement in response to fan criticism like the “I’m excited !” remark. Todd, may I offer this unsolicited advice. If you and the Glazers want you to keep your job keep this in mind. There is an old saying; Nice guys finish last.

  4. ElioT Says:

Yeah Whitehead puked all over his **** on that play.

  5. ElioT Says:

@Hydra – ask the Lions about injuries dude.

    Not an excuse.

  6. Miller5252 Says:

I was happy to see the Panthers score before half. Heck, I was hoping they would keep scoring. If they scored the Bucs could keep going down the field to Evans. The Panthers couldn’t keep up so the Bucs decided to run the ball more and that slowed the passes down the field to Evans. I sure hope the Saints don’t double Mike all game next week and keep him from his record.

  7. Nutterbuccer Says:

If bucky got the start last week we beat the lions. Enough is enoenough. Use rachad just like he was used today. Bucky is the 4th best rb in the nfl lets start using him like that.

  8. Citrus County Says:

Maybe someone should give Todd a copy of Leo Durocher’s book “Nice Guys Finish Last”.

  9. Hydra Says:

    @£lioT they beat the Lions

  10. Citrus County Says:

I once was in attendance when Lou Holtz was the speaker. He was really good. He did speak of the need for a routine and keeping emotions in check. But he sure had the ability to motivate. Perhaps Todd Bowles needs to loosen his corset a little bit and let some air out.

  11. Winny Testaverde Says:

Bucs made Thielen look like Steve Largent in the two games they played this season. We may need him to keep it up next week vs The Falcones.

  12. Hydra Says:

Yeah they made Thielen look bona fide

  13. 941bucsfan Says:

In the last 2 games there hasnt been much soft zone Joe. I think you are misleading some people here.. there has been some man to man coverage with guys getting beat badly. There is a reason why todd cant play man to man, #27 and #35 are getting torched

  14. Kieran Says:

Dean will be with the Panthers next year
    Bye Felicia

  15. Bakerfan Says:

I tried to post that quote in the in game thread but it never showed up. Most fire I heard from Bowles all year

  16. Jethro Tull Says:

Maybe coach is taking his own advice. Two weeks in a row, 2nd half defense was shut down. Too bad it takes Coach watching 30 minutes of Cover Who before he fixes it. But at least he has fixed it the last two. Now – Spencer Rattler is dangerous and the Aints will want blood after the 50 burgering we put on them.

    Fire up, not down.

  17. Larrd Says:

It is the time of the season to start getting salty.

  18. BallHawk75 Says:

Dude lost to the Cowboys with one of the best offenses in the league.

    27-26

And we do not control our destiny.

    How sad is that?

  19. itzok Says:

Pass defense is going to be the demise of this team

  20. Rod Munch Says:

Whitehead did not look good early – not sure if he was better later on or just wasn’t picked on, but I noticed Whitehead on a number of early plays getting burned. Then again he’s been out for over 2 months I believe – hopefully it’s just him getting back up to speed after injury. But man does this defense need Winfield back out there – hopefully healthy, but even if he’s only 75% he’s still better than anyone else in the defensive backfield.

  21. Joe in Michigan Says:

Rod Munch: Whitehead looked bad before the injury. I never thought I’d say this about him, but I don’t think his heart is in football anymore (see when he chose not to even try to tackle Derrick Henry).

  22. John McKay Says:

Ballhawk 75. Bucs control their own destiny. Win and they are in. They are a game ahead of Atlanta with one to go.

  23. Citrus County Says:

Could it be that the sleeping giant (Todd Bowles) is waking up ?

  24. Monty Says:

Coach Bowls likes to be composed on the sidelines, kinda like Tom Landry, unfortunately for the bucs ,everyone knows they have no secondary , good d backs need to turn into receivers once the ball is in the air & weak at the linebacker positions, bucs need John Lynch and ronde barber deion sanders,Harry Carson, dick butkis Derek brooks type of defensive players.sometimes you can’t have it all like the chiefs, got to admit though baker& offense have kept the bucs alive in the Superbowl hunt,GO BUCS!
