Todd Bowles Already Sending Message To His Players

December 30th, 2024

Demands better fundamentals.

Joe has mentioned the following a few times already because Joe thinks it is so profound.

We all know Todd Bowles is a laid-back kind of guy. Doesn’t mean he isn’t passionate about winning, he’s just not a cartoon character on the sidelines.

So when he gets visibly upset — a very rare occurrence — you can bet that whatever has ticked him off is big.

After watching his defense pretend they were playing a game in a Pasco County high school flag football summer league and getting roasted like a hog on a tailgate grill, Bowles, in his customary halftime spot on the Buccaneers Radio Network, blurted, “DB’s have to get their heads out of their asses.”

For Bowles, that was a Parcellsian explosion.

Of course, the Bucs defense played significantly better in the second half yesterday, even without starting corner Jamel Dean who was hurt (again).

Maybe thinking he has to get ahead of things for this Sunday’s game given the magnitude of the stakes — win and the Bucs are in the playoffs — Bowles already began harping on fundamentals in his day-after presser this afternoon.

“They have to do the little things right,” Bowles said of what he expects in Sunday’s game against the slimy Saints. “They shouldn’t respond any other way than they responded yesterday.

“We have to do the little things right. It’s a division opponent, we know it’s going to be a dogfight. We had to win one last year – last game of the season [at Carolina], it was 9-0. It was a dog fight with Carolina so we expect the same thing.”

Well, the Bucs offense is a bit different than last year’s Stinking Panthers. The Bucs have a dominating run game. Last year there was nothing remotely dominating about it.

And, as the age-old football saying goes, a run game will open up the pass game. And Baker Mayfield is a hot quarterback right now.

Joe any update on Pro Bowl voting?

  2. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Just take the ball first Sunday, should be no prob!!!! Go Bucs!!

  3. Joe Says:

Joe any update on Pro Bowl voting?

    No.

  4. Fred Says:

    Dump Dean.

  5. GoneGator Says:

Todd for coach of the year.

OMG that would lead to some very upset “fans” around here 🙏🏼🤣

  6. Bill in Seminole Says:

There are 3 potential scenarios from next weekend, 2 of which favor the Bucs. We win; we’re in, regardless of what Atlanta does. We lose, and Atlanta loses, we’re in. We lose and Atlanta wins, they’re in.

    As for ties???

  7. ModHairKen Says:

Just upgrade and let attrition do its job.

Jason Licht will fix the Defensive Backs. And the poor edge pass rush. And the anemic depth at LB. And not by coaching, but by upgrading. He has to know that he dropped the ball on this for this season.

But for Bowles to be blaming technique at this stage of the season is an indictment on coaching or the players’ talent. Or both.

  8. Davenport Says:

Bowles saying that about the DBs is more a reflection on coaching than their ability.

They have NFL quality talent, that’s why they’re here, so whatever coaching/scheme they’ve gotten isn’t working.

  9. Baking with Coen Says:

I’m stoked about our last draft. Now let’s fix the defense.
Let’s Buck, Tuck, White and BAKE!!!
    Go Bucs!!!

  10. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Letting Carlton Davis go was a HUGE loss to the secondary.

Alota people thought that Jamel Dean was a reliable replacement for Carlton Davis and we all see now that he isn’t and he’s nothing more than a serviceable player…..and you know it’s bad when the backup CBs plays and the secondary still performs the same.

Maybe Jamel Dean is injured or having a down year???? Who knows?????

  11. Bartow Buc Says:

These DB’s are professional players, playing in a very complex defense, when they fail to cover properly (as they did in the first half) they deserve to be lit up by Coach Bowles !! Then he coached them up and …….. problem solved.

Todd Bowles knows how to handle his players !!

Go Bucs !! Beat the Saints !!

  12. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

TheBucsAnthem Says: Letting Carlton Davis go was a HUGE loss to the secondary.

Carlton Davis wasn’t let go because of talent, he was let go because is availability. He was always injured. Jamal Dean is seems to be in the same boat.

  13. Trevor Says:

“And, as the age-old football saying goes, a run game will open up the pass game. And Mayfield is a hot quarterback right now.”

    This was a Steve post

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

Bowles wants those 10 wins. HE knows its on the DENSE to step it up. Glad he is finally jumping in some A’s….

  15. ElioT Says:

Dreadful Jamel Dean could be addition by subtraction.

Watching him flat-footed with no-one on the outside as Theilen strolled into the endzone wide-a** open was some of the worst DB play you’ll ever see.

  16. toopanca Says:

Bowles had the right to be pissed!

Thielen had already scored the first Panthers touchdown, and he was clearly the greatest receiving threat for the Panthers.

On the second touchdown, Bowles had Izien lined up to cover Thielen underneath with Whitehead lined up to cover Thielen over the top. When Thielen started his route, Whitehead stood flat footed staring into the backfield. With Izien trailing, Thielen ran past Whitehead like he was standing still – because Whitehead was standing still.

I don’t know what more Bowles could do. He had the safety lined up to take the deep ball away from the Panthers greatest threat, and the safety just ignored the deep route until it was too late.

Bowles correctly diagnosed the threat and put a veteran player who has previously experienced success in the right defense to mitigate the threat.

There was nothing to communicate about, and there was no rookie on the field who should need to be lead around by the hand.

I guess Bowles should have read the future and called a timeout to pull his player’s head out of whatever it was stuck in.

  17. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Bowles knows the Bucs secondary plays average to below average against good teams and that’s why Bowles is always playing soft zone coverage……and we see this EVERY game this season.

Carlton Davis at his best would basically shut down the best wide receivers…………and Antoine Winfield would essentially shut down all deep pass plays when he’s playing at his best.

The Bucs has not had that at all outside of the Lions or Eagles game when the Bucs didn’t have all these rash of injuries.

The other issue is a dedicated pass rusher that terrorizes the QB on every play….. that’s been ghostly all season long for the most part.

The Bucs needs those elements back.

  18. stpetebucsfan Says:

“They have NFL quality talent, that’s why they’re here, so whatever coaching/scheme they’ve gotten isn’t working.”

So THEY have no personal responsibility for their play? It’s their fault that they are rookies or second years players thrust into responsibilities not planned for them at the beginning of the year?

How many coincidences can Todd Bowles continue to conjure up? Who was the only NFL coach to post a winning record with the spitshow that is the Jets in the past 15 years! Who is so bad at defensive schemes he managed to luck into scheming well enough for a Bucs SB win. Yes he did luck into JPP, Suh, Shaq, LVD and great PLAYERS.

IMAGINE THIS. What if DW45 hadn’t blown up mentally and Antoine Winfield remained healthy. If Bowles had DW45 playing ILB next to LVD at the same level he played his SB season along with game changer Winfield HEALTHY do we think the open wound in the middle of the Bucs pass defense might heal?

Just those TWO players would have made a HUGE difference in the D.

  19. Larrd Says:

Carlton Davis and Dean seemed pretty similar to me. Tall, fast, skilled in coverage, yet unreliable.

  20. Woodenman Says:

Izien was inactive yesterday he did not play.

  21. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Two biggest injuries this season on defense were Bryce Hall and SirVorcea Dennis. I think this would be a deeper, better defense with these two still in the lineup.

  22. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ stpetebucsfan

I think Bowles is arrogant to a fault…….and Bowles will never blame anyone on his coaching staff for giving him bad advice about players on the team…..especially the defense.

Let’s face it right now, the only players in the secondary that will play consistently and good are LVD & Winfield……….that’s it…..and that right there is extremely bad when it comes to pass coverage.

…..so what does Bowles do???? —- they play soft zone on defense and keep the offense infront of them.

All season long we’ve always seen the cornerbacks running for their lives right behind a wide receiver…..while safeties always seems to be looking lost while wide receivers are flying right past them…….ALL SEASON LONG.

……..let’s just be honest everyone…..be honest and say “yeah, the Bucs secondary sucks”

  23. Tye Says:

“Todd Bowles Already Sending Message To His Players”

Its his resume and the message is:

‘I’m one of the worst HC in the league!’

  24. Zoocomics Says:

I’m a realist, some of you have the mindset of Super Bowl or bust, and that’s not this team…not yet. Given the peaks and valleys of this season, losing twice to the Falcons, and them choking away an opportunity for a banner. I would love to hang another NFC South Division banner on RayJay… 4th Straight!…don’t care if we are bumped from the playoffs in the first round. 2025 is our year everyone. LFG!

  25. Ramblin_Man Says:

The overall lack of knowledge by some of you is an embarrassment to this fan base. Getting mad at JL for not stacking the roster lol. We had zero money to do so. We brought back key players and still had to pay for kicking the can down the road during the Brady years. They have 14mm in dead cap for Carlton Davis, 9mm for Shaq Barret, almost 7mm for Russell gage, and 4.5mm for Ryan Jensen.

Once again his team knocked it out of the park in the draft, we obviously have multiple rookies contributing to this team and doing so in a productive manner. Missing Bryce Hall, SirVocea Dennis, and AWJ for the majority of the season really hurt the defense along with Randy Gregory being a basket case and never contributing a down of football for the team. Be smarter and be better Bucs fans. The information is there for everyone, there is no excuse for the ignorance.

  27. Buddha Says:

Many of the posters on this site believe the defense is under-performing and that is Todd Bowles fault. Actually, they are over-performing. Consider who was on the field in the 2nd half of yesterday’s game:

Mike Edwards played nearly every play. Edwards was cut by KC, Tennessee, and Buffalo and was just hanging out for several months this season.

JJ Russell, an undrafted free agent who played 60% of the snaps yesterday.

    Corner back Hayes, was a 6th round draft pick;

    K. Britt, a 5th round draft choice played 36% of the snaps

Kaevon Merryweather is an undrafted free agent who played 23% of the snaps
    on defense yesterday.

This was the 2nd and third level of the defense behind a very good defensive line. It isn’t surprising teams don’t even try to run against Tampa (with the exception of Baltimore). OK geniuses, what is Bowles to do? Oh, he shouldn’t play zone; he should man-up. Really? Against NFL caliber wide receivers and tight ends?

We are not going to the Super Bowl this year because our defense even without a slew of major injuries is not playoff caliber. We need two cornerbacks and two linebackers.

  28. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Anthem

“……..let’s just be honest everyone…..be honest and say “yeah, the Bucs secondary sucks””

Agree our eyes do not lie but who is responsible. The coaches? The Players? The Salary Cap? The injuries? All of the above?

I would also rephrase it a bit. The Bucs Secondary “play” has sucked. I’m not sure when they all have more reps and are not play multiple positions they won’t be a more effective secondary.

I AM pretty sure that if you take the highest paid, best safety in the NFL off the field it’s very harmful to the D. And Winfield played the cleanup/Def QB spot and was a genuine game changer. He would have made a difference!!!

  29. Buddha Says:

Yes, man-to-man is preferred but you better have first rate corners and safeties. This year we have only one who might start for any other team.

  30. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Ramblin_Man

I have to 100% disagree with you.

Cap casualties happen….every team faces this issues every season

Injuries happen on every team…… so be it

BUT PLAYER MANAGEMENT IS LICHT JOB#1!!!!……he has team of personnel and scouts to find all the right players to get a team through the season as Injuries happens because we know there will be.

Winfield was the only player out of the that list you mentioned that was an impact player and all the other ones are true backups. KJ Britt is only at LB because Devin White went mental and Bucs needed someone to fill that hole last season and he’s continuing to fill that hole until the Bucs can find a true starting LB……KJ Britt is a backup player that stops the run….he can’t cover.

Anyone else notice the media or websites isn’t talking about Jason Licht….Licht has been keeping his head low because he knows he did not do a good job before the season started finding good players to fill all the holes……..Licht & Bowles went to the thrift store and shopped for players before the season started this year and that’s a fact!!!

  31. Beeej Says:

Carlton Davis was out injured when WE played the Lions, and right now he’s on IR….kinda like when he was here. This was the last year of his contract too, and we weren’t gonna pay him $17 million again, AND we got a 3rd round pick for him, which we used for Jalen McMillan

  32. Bobby M. Says:

The issue with this defense is it’s confusing to the players for whatever reason. These guys have been in this system for a few yrs, yet nobody looks like they’ve mastered their role. That’s on Bowles, it’s week 16 and we’re leaving their only WR threat wide open on multiple occasions. That’s been the head scratcher since Kupp in the playoffs against the Rams. Bowles calls plays that even the players don’t seem to understand the concept or rationale. I just don’t think he’s a great DC. His scheme barely works with a high octane offense….even then it’s susceptible to choke.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

Todd – it’s not the players, it’s the crappy zone scheme. There’s no way players are just standing around flat footed on their own – they’re clearly being told to stick tightly to their area of the field, which means letting guys run wide open. There is such a thing as a tight zone, see the 2002 Bucs, the best passing defense in the history of the NFL. That was a active zone that moved with the action and created extremely tight windows – but the Bowles zone is literally just guys standing around waiting for something to happen, which again, is by design. It’s a terrible design. Stop doing that. Play man or play a tight active zone.

  34. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Well everyone knew Carlton Davis was going to be a cap Casualty, but when he wasn’t injured and playing at his best, Carlton Davis was a true #1 shutdown corner back.

But before him, who’d the Bucs have? Vernon Hargreaves? — disaster, he’s not even in the NFL anymore and he’s only 29 yrs old…just sucked

Aquib Talib? — well, he was good for a hot minute and his disastrous off field antics.

    Outside of them, then Who???

    Oh yeahhhh…. Rhonde Barber & Brian Kelly…… that’s it!!!

The Bucs need two good CBs & LBs before the 2025 NFL SEASON!!!!

  35. Mac Says:

Reading Kamara wants to play this week and Carr may play as well. They want to play spoiler badly to us. If they play this is going to be a dog fight. We all know how Tampa plays after blowing out an opponent. They read thr clippings and think this will be an easy win when we all know it won’t. Man if they blow this it has to spell the end for Bowles. No reason to not be prepared and to want to knock the snot out of these guys with a home playoff game on the line.

  36. Rod Munch Says:

TheBucsAnthem – Davis wasn’t a cap casualty, they traded him because he dared to call out Bowles for his trash zone defense – and correctly pointed out he’s a man-to-man corner and an excellent on at that, who is being told to just stand around in zone not doing anything. Same thing with Devin White, who is a great interior blitzer who wasn’t that good in pass coverage, and instead of using him in a way that took advantage of his skills, Todd had White just standing around in zone where his skills were mostly wasted (mostly, since at least Devin had recovery speed, something Britt doesn’t have and has cost the Bucs big time this year).

Dean was a bit cheaper, and is another guy who is better man-to-man, who is being told to stand around in zone, but he was never as good as Davis but kept his mouth shut, so he kept his job. At the same time this scheme has destroyed his value on the open market (which is why Davis, with one year left on his deal spoke up – and why White last season spoke up – both were punished for doing so).

    ———–

Yeah, and their trash head coach thinks he’s coaching for his job (he’s not, he’s getting fired no matter what) so he’s going to want to play everyone to get a victory.

People just writing off the Saints, the same team that last year in Tampa destroyed the Bucs when the playoffs were on the line, are the same morons who said the Bucs would beat the Cowboys by 25 points, despite the Bucs awful history in prime-time games.

I’m hoping the Saints owner, or their GM if they’re not getting fired, step in and say no, they’re shutting down everyone – because I don’t want to have to rely on the Panthers to beat the Falcons.

  42. Buddha Says:

Too bad there is a salary cap (designed to insure parity and make elite quarterbacks the most important player). The days of the steel curtain are gone. Teams can’t afford an elite QB and a great defense. Look at the Steelers. Really good defense but no elite QB. Ravens defense is average; Bengals defense sucks; Bills defense is average. Lions defense was good but backups suck. Rams defense is average; Buccaneers are about to be ten game winners because they score 30 against everyone. Saints have no future because they are in salary cap hell and have a mediocre quarterback

  43. Badbucs Says:

Anthem you can’t go to Sak’s 5th Avenue with 2 quarters and a shiny new penny and walk out with 5 diamond necklaces. Licht had 60 million in dead cap. How many decent players could he have bought to put on this team with that? Yes he was shopping in the bargain bin. Do you want to go back back into continual cap hell or work your way out of it. Bowles is keeping the seat warm for the next coach. He did an admirable job with the team he was given. He’s still just a middling coach. I won’t hate to see him go but he’s not a Lovie Smith. Not sure if Coen is the answer but I think we have to take that risk. His staff brought out the best in this offense. We would have killed for 30 points a game during the Dungy era or the Schiano era or the Gruden era. Todd might be getting the short end of the stick, but that’s life in the big city. Thanks Todd. Long live Coen. Give us a new DC good draft and a couple quality FAs and it’s off to the races. Go Bucs! Get to the playoffs so Todd can go out a winner or at least 50/50.

  44. Zwak Says:

Is Antoine Winfield going to return if we make the playoffs? This guy got paid and hasn’t been the same since?!

  45. Citrus County Says:

To the point Ira made in the podcast; Why didn’t the special teams coach tell Palmer not to field a punt inside the 5 yard line ?
Are the defensive coaches “coaching” the players or just supervising them each day at practice while running them through drills ? I thought coaching involved teaching.

  46. GoneGator Says:

    Scouting the Lions tonight.
We may face them again this year 🙂

  47. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Let em Bake

Sadly, I don’t think Chris Godwin will play for the Bucs in 2025. He’s been injured so much and at his salary I don’t think Jason Licht wants to take on that risk for another season if he gets injured again.

CG is the ultimate iron man/team player….. he’ll be sorely missed

  48. Jethro Tull Says:

Godwin is a Buc for life.

  49. Bartow Buc Says:

I’d say holding Carolina to 14 points was a very good job by the Bucs Defense !! Also, I’d say Todd Bowles is a great NFL head coach who, if he stays in Tampa, has a great chance of winning a Super Bowl !! The team absolutely loves him and as we have seen in the past, will play their hearts out for him !!

Go Bucs !! Beat the Saints !! Win the NFC South !!

  50. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Buddha

“Saints have no future because they are in salary cap hell and have a mediocre quarterback”

    ———————————————

What? Derek Carr is a good QB when he’s on point; so he is definitely not mediocre at all.

The Bucs gotta play as hard as possible like it’s a playoff game because nothing would make the Saints more happy than to end their season eliminating Tampa from the playoffs!!!!

  51. orlbucfan Says:

I know there’s such a right as the 1st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, but some of the crap on here needs to be moderated! Why? Cos it is so insulting and stupid! The Bucs will come out Sunday and eliminate the Aints. And the usual anti-Bowles BS? You have to be a long-time fan to wade through the sewage. I am not expecting any fireworks with the playoffs, but I am very proud of this team finishing 10-7. Go Bucs!!

  52. BucsFan81 Says:

Lions defense looks like trash. We would run right through them with our offense. I think we could beat them in Tampa.

  53. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Davis and dean epitomized the ‘Tampa 2 lawnchair’ coverage scheme.
Where they played off a good 15-20 yards the wr’s..
It’s been said, ‘lawn chairs ‘ provide better coverage.
It’s one of the most disturbing coverage schemes I’ve seen yet.

No criticism!!! No anti-coach sentiments! Let’s just be little lambs about to become New Years Supper. And then basically state the team sucks because after 10-7 they’re going to lose. Hypocrite much?

  65. Citrus County Says:

Maybe Nick Rapone and Kevin Ross are up late tonight working on a plan for getting their players to play better.

  66. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Jeffrey Becker

Yeah, I totally forgot about Donnie Abraham…..man those were the glory days! 🧐

  67. TheBucsAnthem Says:

It’s actually pretty amazing watching them old clips….the DBs played alota modified man/cover 2 on receivers and they stayed step-per-step with the receivers…….none of this soft ass zone defense Bowles is playing every week.

  68. Rod Munch Says:

TheBucsAnthem – Yeah, it’s amazing how much those old zones moved, unlike the modern zone I see all the time where people just stand around. The Bucs need to seriously get Ronde in the building to teach the defense how to play an aggressive, active zone if they’re going to keep running it. Hopefully, since seemingly most of the NFL has switched to zone, Bowles will switch back to more man-to-man to stay ahead of the curve. I can handle getting beat one-on-one and giving up big plays as opposed to passively dying by a thousand cuts as you sit back and do nothing.

  69. Outrigger Says:

We need 4 LBs in the offseason. 2 inside and 2 outside. Could probably get away with just one outside as Ya Ya would be much better with a good pass rusher on the other side. I’m guessing they resign Nelson for depth and JTS is gone. Watch JTS go to another team next year and resurrect his career. If that happens then we know we have a coaching problem.

  70. RustyRhinos Says:

Davis III has only played 13 games for the Lions, 56 total tackles, 11 Passes defended, 2 Ints for Zero yards…

    His replacement

McCollum has played in 16 games for the Bucs, 76 total tackles, 13 Passes Defended, 2 Ints for 4 yards

    Addition by subtraction…

We have had to make difficult choices for our Brady cast and cost.

Our GM Licht will address that this offseason, we have had several injuries to our DBs this season. We have had to play lesser talented players in that position. Injuries do happen in the NFL, college, and high school. The next player up is the way it is. In the NFL there are only so many players available, unlike college where they have way more.

Move forward after our 2024 season has come to an end, facts not fiction.

    GO!!!!! BUCS!!!!!

  71. Jeffrey Becker Says:

The Rams clinched the NFC West over the Seahawks by virtue of a wild tiebreaker that got down to strength of victory. As such, the Washington Commanders’ win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night locked up the division for them.

It also made Week 18 moot for them. As a result, Rams head coach Sean McVay said on Monday that it’s looking like the Rams won’t play some of their starters on Sunday against the Seahawks.

  72. orlbucfan Says:

Jethro Tull, you know some bipeds can be real dimwits, and your comment puts you at the top of the list. Where did you come from anyway? Never seen you on here before this season.
