Todd Bowles Addresses Potential Liam Coen Departure

December 19th, 2024

Liam Coen is blessed by his boss.

The playcaller behind transforming the Bucs offense into a bludgeoning force — through the air and on the ground — seems destined to be a hot head coach candidate next month.

That’s Liam Coen, and Bucs head coach Todd Bowles might be his biggest cheerleader.

(Shutup, Todd!)

Joe gets it. No coach wants to block another coach’s career path. That’s an owner’s job.

Joe has lobbied for Team Glazer to find Coen’s price to not interview in the 2025 hiring cycle and remain as Bucs offensive coordinator. Put an extraordinary Christmas gift on Coen’s desk ($10 million?) and tell him it’s his if he passes on interviews.

Bowles, however, isn’t thinking out of the box like that. He’s focused on winning games and understanding that Coen might be weeks away from leaving.

“You know, I find solace, it’s a little early to talk about [Coen leaving], but Sean Payton told me last year once I lost [Dave] Canales, he said, ‘At least you know you’re picking the right guy.’ (laughs) That’s your only consolation in it,” Bowles told SiriusXM NFL Radio.

“Having Liam come in and doing what he does, he deserves all the credit he gets. And I think he’s an outstanding person and an outstanding coach. We’ll see if he gets his shot; hopefully he does. And I’ll be happy for him. Then we’ll just have to go back to the drawing board and try to find something else, if that even comes about. But we’re trying to get in the playoffs right now, so that’s probably the furthest thing from my mind.”

Again, Joe hopes Team Glazer goes to the drawing board now — not Bowles in six weeks — and concocts a plan to keep Coen in his role.

Coen must have a price to spend another year in Tampa. Find it!

  1. Pink Says:

If Liam wants a head coaching job, he should get it here.

  2. ATLBuc Says:

I agree, Joe. The other option is to do Bowles like they did Lovie when they fired him and hired Koetter to keep him from getting away. Since we’re probably going to get a first round bye that won’t happen.

  3. James in Memphis Says:

    😂😂 Clueless…

  4. ATLBuc Says:

Perhaps they could give him a package to stay for a couple of years until Todd retires.

  5. Jonny Says:

I would love if Coen were head coach of the Bucs, but Bowles is an upstanding leader of men that has his crew always playing their hearts out for him and us even during tough stretches. Doing him dirty after a possible turnaround will be bad karma. But his defense so far has been performing against bad offenses. It is in the playoffs that his defense will be put to test again.

  6. Tampa2ATL Says:

Amen, Brother Joe, Preach! Keep Coen.

  7. Jerseybuc Says:

Give him whatever he wants to stay. Ben Johnson in Detroit been hanging around there. He’s turned down some opportunities. Do not want to lose coen n these guys have to go through this again

  8. CobbtownBucFan Says:

Bowls wants Coen to get out of Doge ASAP. The longer he’s around and winning big the more Todd fears losing the head seat…..

  9. TampaBayBucFan Says:

How about letting him go…..have Todd run the offense also…save a bunch of money….tank for a better draft pick…….get Joe’s edge rusher……

    Sound like a solid plan?

  10. zzbucs Says:

Cohen is a hot commoditie that´s for sure.

But on this market he should be cautious and wait for the correct team…NOT the Jets, Not Chicago….Maybe Dallas…..

Dont take any team because you can regret

  11. A Bucs Fan Says:

Bowles answer tells me he’s not planning to retire anytime soon.

  12. Bojim Says:

Sounds like Todd wants to stay. Only way we keep Coen is if the defense loses the rest of the games and Todd gets fired or they pay him to stay. The HC interviews are happening too early.

  13. BucsBeast Says:

Todd needs to do what’s right for the organization and step down to DC and give Coen the job. 8

  14. Bobby M. Says:

Letting Coen go will be detrimental to everything we’ve invested in the offense. The offense is what’s keeping this team a float. It’s not Todd Bowles “leadership”….thats grossly overrated.

  15. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Some of the comments are comedy gold

  16. rrsrq Says:

Keep Coen, if you cannot, I hope Thad Lewis is getting his coffee so he is soaking up everything. Are there any jobs that are desirable out there other than Chicago?

  17. FBC Says:

If Coen won’t stay another year as an OC, this has to be a SB or bust year for Bowles.

Similar to Falcons letting Shanahan leave and keeping Quinn, it would be a franchise altering mistake to let the Coen leave.

  18. ModHairKen Says:

It’s about quality of life. He’s been in LA and Lexington for the last few years and bounced around every other year before that.

Now he’s somewhere warm. With no smog. Lots of water. No state income tax. He’s found the greatest success of his career. He has a young LT who is the best in the NFL, and a young QB who he has helped reach the apex. Two All Pro WRs. A great ownership group.

Why would he leave? Does anyone think Canales likes dealing with Tepper?

What he needs is a few more years of learning the NFL coaching norms and to hone his craft.

If the Bucs pay him to stay, I bet he does.

Chicago? Cold. Horrible place to live. NYG? NYJ? Only a desperate idiot would take those jobs. NO? No QB. Disgruntled players. Aging RB and DL. Dallas? Only for a eunuch. NE? Bankrupt. LV? Too hot. The owner is weird. The minority owner is kind of okay. But not the Bowl Cut guy.

    Pay the man.

    And pay Godwin, too.

  19. gotbbucs Says:

I don’t even want to think about this.

  20. Dom Says:

Make Coen a godfather offer. Make him assistant HC and match any salary offers he gets for HC. Bowles contract expires in two more seasons. Coen can take over after that, and have two years more of experience. HC at 41 ain’t bad. He’s not going to go to find a team with a better front office, better stability, better offensive talent, better weather, or better taxes. If it comes down to Bowles or Coen though, give me Coen.

  21. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

    FBC Says:
“…it would be a franchise altering mistake to let the Coen leave.”
    ————————————————————————-

    ^^^^^^^ Agree with this 100%!

If the Glazer’s deliver a Brinks truck full of cash to Coen’s home for Christmas and promote him to Assistant Head Coach maybe he’ll stick around.

Coen has to appreciate having a great OL, top-5 running game, a hall-of-fame WR, and some other promising players. He’s young and has plenty of time to get a head coaching job either here or elsewhere. If he stays here as an OC he’ll have an opportunity to get a ring or two.

  22. StormyInFL Says:

    “promote” Bowles to Senior Advisor….

    Coen to HC

    Easy. Done.

Letting Coen walk out the door would be foolish.

  23. Bucsfan81 Says:

Sounds like we are going to lose Coen. At some point Bowles luck is going to run out picking offensive Coordinators to save his job though. Then we will be picking in the top 5 with a complete over haul. I would rather just keep Coen even if it means getting rid of Bowles and finding a new DC.

  24. Ds Says:

I want Coen to stay just not as our HC they are more examples of hot shot O coordinators falling apart as HC because they are good at calling plays but not good at being HC, HC is being a leader of men not calling plays.

  25. A Bucs Fan Says:

I like ModHairKen’s thought process. Not sure it’ll happen though

    BINGO !!!

  27. First Name Greatest Says:

Todd shows how clueless he is.

He should not hope Liam gets an opportunity to leave as Liam is the only reason Todd is likely gonna be back as a HC next year

  28. TampaBayBucFan Says:

Putting a severed horses head in Coen’s bed is far cheaper than a $10mil contract.

  29. Allen Lofton Says:

In a way it’s a good delimna for the Bucs to be in. It would be hove the Glazers to put out the money for Coen.
The better the Bucs do the more money the Glazers make

  30. Jethro Tull Says:

The obvious plan is (1) big bagload o’ money, (2) promotion to Assistant Head Coach, (3) commitment to Liam being the heir apparent when Coach decides to call it a career and go for beers.

This is a Duh and if Glazers and Licht don’t act and we long suffering fans have to watch something like the 2022 offense again…….torches and pitchforks.

  31. Citrus County Says:

It sure will be interesting to see how the Glazers handle this. This will be a true test for them. I would like to see an orderly transition over a period of time (one or no more than two years) to help strengthen Coen.

Now is the time for the Glazers to command. Bowles will do what they say, he has no choice. If handled properly everyone will come out looking good.

  32. PSL Bob Says:

Tap the brakes folks. Just a year ago, Canales got a HC gig after only a year as the Bucs OC. How did that work out? Granted, the Bucs have a lot more talent than Carolina, but still the HC gig is a bit more involved that being a Coordinator. I’m with Joe, pay the man to stay another year as OC and see let the chips fall. If he should get a SB ring this year or next that will only increase his salary potential as a head coach, here or somewhere else.

  33. Kenton Smith Says:

PLEASE! Anybody on this website who thinks our team’s dependent on Liam Coen to be successful needs to rethink everything they think they know! The entire team has learned from him and viceversa. If he gets an offer he can’t refuse good for him! We’ve got players and coaches that want to be here and let’s sign Godwin. Goedeke. LaVonte for another year. The list goes on. Coen may feel like staying for more years than we know. This organization goes from GM to HeadCoach to Quarterback. Just like that. Then comes a bunch of players and staff. It’s taken years to build. Coen hasn’t been here a year? Here’s to hoping he stays but if he doesn’t I promise the team goals will remain the same.

  34. TampaBayBucFan Says:

    What’s the worry……Byron…..He be available!!!

  35. Lightningvinny Says:

Make him Assistant HC (head coach in waiting ) ,, a big bonus etc!!!!
We may be getting ahead of ourselves here,,, Bucs haven’t made playoffs yet and there are other really good coaches out there who may also want a HC job,,, I think Liam should be picky,, if Bear call them by all means,, Giant/Raiders/Jags is tougher because by the time you get the team good you’ll probably be fired

  36. Joe Says:

PLEASE! Anybody on this website who thinks our team’s dependent on Liam Coen to be successful needs to rethink everything they think they know!

Got two words for you if you don’t think Liam Coen is vital for the Bucs’ success:

    Byron Leftwich.

  37. dumboldguy Says:

The more I watch guys analyze the all-22 film of this offense the more I will be angry if they let Coen walk or the OL coach walk. The OL is putting on a damn clinic. Watch the scramble TD to Evans on the sideline. The OL hands off rushers to other blockers no less than 4 different times. Either we have a group of the smartest offensive line with neuro links to each other or we have great coaching in that area.

The Glazers have to do whatever it takes to keep them both and if that means Bowles has to retire don’t care.

No offense but this is the worst take I’ve ever seen. Coen is special. Not just good but special. He is 100% the best OC this team has ever had and that includes Gruden and Arians as offensive minded head coaches.

  39. Jethro Tull Says:

TBBF you’re on fire today. Keep it up!

    Severed horse’s head. LOL.

  40. Greg Says:

I think having Canales the year before and seeing how that’s playing out is a good lesson for Coen. Ben Johnson is a good model to follow. He’s probably getting paid to stay and wait for the right situation.

I do think Canales will turn around Carolina. Bryce Young is looking better than he was and they have been scrappy. That’s not translating to wins yet but it will as long as Carolina’s idiot owner gives him the time.

  41. Citrus County Says:

Todd Bowles is a good man. I don’t think an encouraged retirement would, in any way, cause him to commit acts of vindictive treason like his predecessor and Leftnut did allegedly. Bowles fell into this opportunity, one he may not have had otherwise. If handled well he can retire in a positive light with his reputation intact as a SB DC and 3-4 time consecutive NFC south champ. TV contracts would likely follow.

  42. Pewter Power Says:

Here we go with the head coach is the more involved than coordinator talk. Do you know how stupid that sounds? Everyone that that’s a head coach was once a coordinator like BA or oh yea the ravens Harbaugh was a special teams coach. A few of you fail to realize the only reason Bowles isn’t on the hot seat again is Coen. Like I said of course Bowles is going to have good games here and there but don’t give him Liam Coen credit.

  43. Citrus County Says:

Just as I thought Leftnut had faded away, up he pops from the gopher hole !

  44. Jeffrey Becker Says:

not sure he even wants to be a head coach in the NFL if he can get paid as much to do what he’s already doing. remember how good Koetter was as an OC and then totl crap as a HC?

  45. Ds Says:

For every Sean McVay there are 10 more Josh McDaniels

  46. Jethro Tull Says:

To imply that Liam Coen is easily replaced and Coach is the secret to Bucs’ success is naive if not downright ignorant. Faithful Bucs fans recognize the rarity of great offense for this franchise. There’s never been a better one. Liam kept us chugging even without Mike and Chris, and banged up lessers. And as has been well said above, if not for Liam, Coach’s seat would be in cinders now and his replacement probably already selected by ownership.

Jason and the Glazers have this.

  47. ocala Says:

Would be absolutely crazy to let Coen go.

    Severed horse’s head. LOL.

Would be most effective if it were one of Devin White’s horses…..Ricky Bobby, for example.

  50. Lightningvinny Says:

Perhaps to increase HIS value he stays another year , guys will be in year 2 of system, He knows he has a mouth smashing line , excellent running backs and WRs and a guy who can deliver in Baker,,, or he takes what is behind door #2 ,, take over a bad team w bad players , possibly no QB and puts everything he has into trying to turn it around ….
Bucs could be the better option

  51. BakerFan Says:

Liam Coen has been around the block. if fact he has been around a couple of times. Why has he not gotten a chance before now???

The Bucs put him in a good opportunity to win, this is a fact. Where he ends up may not have the talent the Bucs have and may not be able to perform as well.

Stability may mean something, like it did with Baker. One more year and he may have a super bowl ring and the Bucs HC position.

  52. Allbuccedup Says:

10 mil not going to happen Bowles only makes 3 mil. 10 mil is top ten head coach money.

  53. Kenton Smith Says:

Baker flew into LA 2 years ago. Liam is OC at LA. Signed Mayfield because Staffords hurt. 2 days until game. Coen and Mayfield sit up nights at Mayfields hotel room and talk football. Mayfield drives team 97 yards for the win 2 nights later. That stuff doesn’t happen. 3 weeks later last game of season Coen and Baker hang 55 points on the Broncos and go their separate ways. Coen goes back to Kentucky because McVay wants to call the plays. Mayfield won’t sign in LA and be a backup until Stafford retires like McVay urges him to do. Mayfield could have made twice the money as a backup in LA but told his agent I’m a franchise QB, get me a starting gig. Licht and Bowles knew what they were getting in Mayfield. Licht and Bowles knew who to listen to when it came time to hire an OC.

  54. Citrus County Says:

Speaking to orlbucfan wherever you are; Think about it. As fans since 1976 we are on the cusp finally of seeing our dreams materialize. IF things work out for the best this is what we will soon have for the first time in concert:

    1) Stable, decent, respectable, sane ownership with a solid GM and
    front office
    2) A true franchise quarterback
    3) A clean slate with a rising star head coach riding in on a winning
    record
    4) A solid foundation for future success ( no guarantees of
regular 10-12 win seasons but likely at least a .500 team and
    consistent playoff contender)
    5) TWO Super Bowl trophies

In spite of my criticisms and observations and disdain for the NFL proper, I remain and you are as well, a TRUE BUCS FAN for half a century. The Bucs are finally WINNERS ! Hopefully soon we can recover from our Battered Bucs Fan Syndrome.

And we don’t know how this year may turn out. This could be a very Merry Christmas !

Cobbtownbucfan says: Bowls wants Coen to get out of Doge ASAP. The longer he’s around and winning big the more Todd fears losing the head seat…..
I ask, how big is your crap stirring spoon, I’m imagining not as big as you think. This team was successful with a rookie learning his way offensive coordinator last season, and found a better authentic coordinator to help run the team this season. It will not change this franchise to the worst if Cohen walks (I don’t want to walk). This team plays the way it does because they play for coach bowls and due to his coaching than themselves. Are we better with bulls and Cohen at the helm yes. Should we allow it to distract from what’s happening right now in this season hell no. As always I’m a big Buccs fan and say or let F’n go Tampa Bay, fire those cannons buccaneers as the ship has sailed into the port of corpus Christi. And, the Buccaneers pillaging group is on its way to Dallas!

  56. Jethro Tull Says:

OMG I have to change shirts. Irish coffee spewed from laughing fit. Hope you don’t get chastised by some moral police officer who took offense at some fine, edgy humor!

  57. Locked In Says:

The problem for Coen is – you better strike while the iron is hot. You never know what life has instore

  58. stpetebucsfan Says:

Todd is “clueless” enough to be a Super Bowl Winning player, a Super Bowl winning Defensive Coordinator and a head coach with a 20-5 record in December including a shot at his 3rd CONSECUTIVE Division title!!!

We should all be so clueless!!!

  59. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Lockedin

Perhaps Coen has more confidence in himself than you have in him.

Why should the “iron cool”? I mean we could all have a heart attack in the next minute so I agree Que Sera, Sera. But Coen does not need to be in a rush.

First the money is irrelevant. Coen will be fabulously wealthy no matter what he does going forward, even as an OC he’ll be a multimillionaire if he’s not already.

Secondly we assume his goal is to one day have “his own” team and be a HC.
Is there really a rush. Is this off year the ONLY time he’ll be valuable. Which jobs are even open? Are they desirable?

Perhaps Coen sees a bigger picture. Work out a succession deal with Todd, 2 perhaps 3 years for Todd to complete his SB resume. He steps down immediately if the Bucs win this year or next.

Coen could light it up next year with one of the best young OL’s in the league, a savvy QB with great leadership skills who has already bonded with Coen, 3 RB’s, two very good and one potentially GREAT…ME…CG..McMillan…Otten..

So yeah Coen more than likely wants to be an HC one day. But hanging on a couple more years with a great organization and a shot at REAL success in the meantime are also very enticing.

  60. Cometowin2 Says:

Keep Liam at all costs! If you have to fire Bowles so be it. Don’t let the BEST offensive coordinator you’ve ever had walk!!!

  61. California Buc Says:

Listen, this guy has done a better job than being 32 in total offense. There have also been cracks in his armor which each week I notice goes unaddressed by you guys.
For instance, there were two games, one being Atlanta we could have kept the lead and won if we were able to grind out 1 to 2 first downs. This OC handed the ball off to White. If he was as good as many of you claim, those plays would have gone to Tucker. The Bucs stole Tucker due to medical reasons, however they game against the Saints was his audition to the league. The long run Buvky made this pass week Tucker has the speed to take that to the house. Tucker is one of the top 5 running back in the league and this OC keeps him on the bench.
Trey Palmer is the second fastest receiver in the league and this OC does nothing but criticize him publicly. I have seen poor throws to him but not the drops they claim. At LSU he played behind Chase and Jefferson. Any of you realize he was the speedster that cleared out for those two guys but this OC can’t figure out how to use him.
Additionally, he freaks out when Mayfield throws an interception then goes to all running plays. By now he should realize Mayfield throws interceptions from the pocket because he can’t see. If the OC would roll him more, it would allow him to see better and fewer balls will be batted down.
Third, he scripts the first two drives of the game really well. Then he keeps changing instead of continuing to do what worked and force the defense of the other team to change.
These are only a few cracks that many of you overlook.
In contrast, you never mention the over $40 million dollars to Tom Brady that Todd Bowles has been forced to work around for two seasons. Next year they will have the money and draft picks to get two veteran free agents inside linebacker, additionally, use the first and third round pick to get two more ILBs. Use the second round to get a cover corner. Then they can use picks 4 through 7 to get young depth for both defensive and offensive lines. Lastly, they need to use some of the money to go and get a superstar edge rusher.
If we gave Bowles who is paid $3 million dollars, these tools, we should wonder how good this team could become? BTW, I think they will make it to the championship game. There is a good chance it will be in Tampa against the Rams.

  62. Kysbucs18 Says:

Well we’ve all seen this movie before. Bowles and his Bucs are crossing a high after lasts weeks game. Everyone loves the Bucs. That is until the Bucs lay an egg in Dallas Sunday night. That’s a typical Bucs trap game. They lose that and Penix and Atlanta finish strong and knock out the Bucs. It’ll be fire Bowles, Hire Coen all over again. Hopefully they’ve actually turned the corner and are peaking at the right time. Go Bucs!!

  63. BAKERSBucs says Says:

He was a college coach last year this is his 1st year as oc I doubt there r teams out there that want a 1st year head oc as a long term head coach point look at Canales that’s tells a story not in Coen favor it shud take a few years to prove u r self, point look atncj stroud they made him look like the next brady that ain’t happening we will c

  64. Kenton Smith Says:

stpetebucsfan, you make things simple and concise. Need more of that on our side. Thanks for galvanizing my sanity.

  65. MelvinJunior Says:

I don’t have time right now to read all of these comments, BUT you people on here, who have continued to say that Todd should ‘step aside’ and become the DC are well, I’ll just say it… STUPID. I mean, IGNORANTAF. There are no other words. I am all for choosing Cohen over Bowles, if and when it comes down to it that we HAVE TO choose between the two… BUT, DC!? GTFOH. You all are just DUMB. REAL DUMB. You know NOTHING about egos, Etc. Yeah, BOWLES is going to ‘willingly’ take a DEMOTION and Coach UNDER Cohen… Yeah, Rightttt. I mean, YOU don’t even deserve to comment on here. You’re living in some kind of a ‘fantasyland’ stuck inside of your OWN HEAD.

  66. Pewter Power Says:

7 seasons as a head coach and this is only Bowles 3rd with a winning record. With Bucs 8-9, 9-8 in one of the worst divisions in football. If you are bragging about that resume you are clueless.

  67. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Wasn’t it a couple weeks ago u were saying ccoen laid an egg against the panthers his play calling was sub par now he is a saint put on the brakes man 1 game at a time

  68. Cometowin2 Says:

    Joe,

Do a poll for at least 24 hours asking should the Bucs hire Liam as HC and fire Bowles if necessary or keep Bowles as head coach and lose Liam. Wisdom of the Crowd. If we don’t keep Liam he probably go to the Saints and we will end up having another lost decade. I’m 69. Can’t afford another lost decade!!!

  69. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Stpetebucsfan I thought his december record was 20&3

  70. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Or how bout keep the team coaches as it is I think Coen needs at least 1 more year 2nd in command remember Coen record rite now is 8&6 not 12&2

  71. Joseph C Simmons Says:

Got two words for you if you don’t think Liam Coen is vital for the Bucs’ success:

    Byron Leftwich.

Come on, man, you’re smarter than this. Coen has been fantastic but he’s not the only reason for increased success this year. We drafted a stud center, and the rest of the line had another year of experience and working together. Plus, Bucky Irving would make any offense explosive.

This comment section is bad enough, let’s not let the actual writers here be nonsensical. If the Bucs lose Coen, we’ll be fine. We’ll swipe someone else from the McVay coaching tree and have a Top Ten offense next year.

  72. First Name Greatest Says:

Coen is coordinating the best rushing attack in franchise history, IN ITS HISTORY!!!

Todd is coordinating an awful unit and has shown in multiple coaching stops he is not a great Head Coach. Usage of timeouts baffles him, field position and when to go for it on 4th down is confusing to this guy and leaning on your worst unit to close out a game shows he has NO feel for the flow of the game.

Todd was gifted this job and has shown little that he deserves to hang on to it!

  73. Zoocomics Says:

In a perfect world, Coen bets on himself and makes another run with Tampa knowing that he’s good enough to do it again, and that a HC job will be available anytime he’s ready to leave, for us we hope it’s here in Tampa when it’s time to transition on from Bowles. There is no one on the defensive side of the ball that we’d replace Bowles if he were to step down. It would be no doubt Coen’s job. And imagine it would be a lot easier transition to a “successful” head coaching job. You don’t have to blow everything up on the other side of the ball if you don’t want to, you can tweak it. Coen has everything in place to run it back and show us and the league that he knows what he’s doing… he’s got young stout offensive line, good-to-great weapons on offensive and a solid franchise QB to run it. Additionally, the other teams in the NFC South still have a long way to go, which helps with maintaining winning records and going to the playoffs, all is relevant for the head coaching candidate’s resume.

Another year allows for ALL OF US to examine Coen has a play caller and a potential head coaching candidate.

  74. MelvinJunior Says:

For all these “no experience” BS people crowd… Just go and compare COHEN’s Coaching Resume with KEVIN O’CONNELL’s. I’m waiting…. IDENTICAL. Nope… Actually, it is COHEN with the more “experience.” REMEMBER… OC at the Rams & OC at Kentucky, TWICE!!!! BOTH, straight off of the “McVay-Tree.” And, actually, Cohen was QB-Coach, when O’Connell was OC… Then, Cohen became OC after O’Connell left for the Vikings Job. O’Connell (like Cohen) had NEVER been a HC before. I will say again, what I’ve stated before (over a month ago)… NO ONE has ever been a HC before, UNTIL they first, actually became ONE. And, it’s ALL nothing but a HUGE ‘crapshoot’ to begin with. Well over 90% of them will eventually ‘fail’ and be fired anyway… Within 5 years, max. A huge part of it depends on the franchise and situation. Cohen really has saved Todd’s ACE this season. 💯

  75. Ha-Ha-Ha Says:

Some of you are looking at this wrong.
What up and coming offensive coordinator Is going to turn down the Bucs
when they see the last 2 Offensive coordinators went 1 year and got a head coaching gig.

  76. MelvinJunior Says:

Cohen has been coaching FOOTBALL for prob about 15-YEARS now, at literally EVERY level. And, as a Kentucky (and Bucs) Fan, I can tell you that the ‘Players’ absolutely LOVE HIM. I bet if you were to ask Baker (privately, of course) ‘who’ he’d rather have moving forward, I’m pretty sure I know ‘who’ HE would want. You HAVE TO keep this thing together. You have a very young Defense (and OLine) right now, that is being built for longterm DOMINANCE. You keep this “Cohen-Baker” Juggernaut TOGETHER, with this STUD of a young “Offensive-PLAYCALLER” as Head Coach, & the future is oh so bright!!!! You’ve really got something there. I like Bowles, he’s a good MAN. But, HE is very replaceable at 61-years old.

  77. drdneastup Says:

Losing Canales was no big deal as it turned out, in fact I thought it was a godsend and said so at the time whinch was the opposite of what many NFL scribes who don’t really know that much about the Bucs thought. Losing Coen however would be a severe blow.

  78. Tucker Says:

Would rather lose bowels that Liam I don’t think third time is a charm if you have to pick up another OC.

  79. Mike Johnson Says:

One should be careful the team that chooses him to turn it around. You could wine up a lot worse. And become an instant loser for 2 to 4 seasons.

  80. Swanny Says:

    Kenton Smith and stpetebucsfan…smartest comments…

  81. El HEFE Says:

i bet thefarm on it coen will stay He wasn’t searching for somewhere to be like Dave Canales was in years before he came to us coen had stability with Rams and in college Dave Canales was just trying to be a head coach no matter what it cost

  82. Citrus County Says:

Put a succession plan in place. Make some guarantees to Bowles and to Coen. If the Bucs succeed this year in the playoffs Bowles gets one or two more years if Coen agrees. Give Coen a big say in the 2025 draft and the future shaping of the team and coaching staff. That scenario will allow Coen to grow in the organization, strengthen his position with all the players, staff, fans and local media all the while sharpening his coaching skills and preparing for the transition to big HC responsibilities. That would give him time to develop his “Head Coach Persona” and his identity. Allow for Bowles to exit gracefully and with dignity. Show him lots of media love and give him some perks.

If plan A doesn’t work, fire Bowles, hire Coen and hang on.

By the way Liam, you already have a winning team and a proven franchise QB under contract and still young. Make it happen. The entire town and fan base can feel the momentum. It seems the expectations are already there.

  83. Citrus County Says:

One more thing Liam. Remember what drew Brees and Sean Payton did together.

  84. Suggiefresh Says:

Maybe Liam Cohen should look at the chicken he has in his own Henhouse and determine if he has good chickens where he is going. Any Team that is looking for a headcoach usually has that opening because the team hasn’t got alit of talent. That wasn’t the case in Tampa. That had a top Ten quarterback, two HOF wide receivers, an up and coming RB and then drafted a good one, a pro bowl Left Tackle and a very serviceable TE crew. He is a great play caller but he needs great player to execute those plays. He has them here and he could definitely establish a dynasty here with his existing players. He might be another Dave Canales and see all that green grass but when you jump that fence, that grass is actually Pond scum and you drown. Dave Canales got a bunch of notoriety last year and not so much this year. Just sayin’.

  85. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    ATLBuc Says
“The other option is to do Bowles like they did Lovie when they fired him and hired Koetter to keep him from getting away.”

That didn’t work out so well.

I think it is too early to commit to anything. The team could self destruct over the last few games (I doubt it will happen, but…).

I hold to the belief that the Bucs are going to the Superbowl this year. If that happens, Bowles is not going anywhere. If we get to the NFC championship game, he goes nowhere.

The Patriots had seasons where they did poorly, improved in the second half of seasons, and ended up wining it all. Maybe Bowles is that kind of coach?

We have been plagued with injuries this year, but somehow, the team has fought through it and reached the top of the division. If they stay at the top, Bowles maybe should be brought back.

After all…he has this team fighting throughout the year…every year.

If Coen leaves, so be it. But maybe he won’t want a head coaching gig.

  86. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’ll say this…I was wrong about Mayfield. I’m willing to admit I may have judged Bowles too harshly too.

  87. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

F that. We cannot lose another OC. Especially not this one. Pay him $10M a year in a 2 year contract then make him HC

  88. Rod Munch Says:

I like Bowles – but I’d keep Coen on over him if that’s the choice.

  89. Pewter Power Says:

Gonna run out of coaches that fit bakers style of play if it’s Sean McVay tree. Baker can’t run just any old system and be this effective at least based on his history I don’t think he can. Keeping Coen is keeping the run game and it’s keeping your big money quarterback functioning at a high level. You can easily change up a defensive scheme

  90. RBUC Says:

How can the Glazers look at Todd Bowles with a straight face paying the HC $3 million a season BUT bump his Offensive Coordinator’s salary up to $10 million a season???? Can anyone make that make sense???👁️

  91. Rob H Says:

Yes, find the price and pay the man. Let him know that when Bowles retires (or gets fired), he can take over as the head man in Tampa.

  92. orlbucfan Says:

Citrus County, this is where you and I disagree. I despise Sean Payton. He was kicked out of the league (go figure) for cheating. He sic’ed his boys on CG14 and injured him for the rest of the season. Whoopee, the Broncos have a winning season with that SOS. Hope they have him on a tight leash with the cheating. Coen has half a brain he will stay here. If not, so be it. He sure ain’t at the level of Einstein on OC.

  93. Citrus County Says:

    orlbucfan…
    ^^^^
I never said that I liked Sean Payton. I know the things he did.
I also know that he and Drew Brees combined to make the Aint’s successful for over a decade. I have compared Baker to Brees and said that if he was paired with the right coach he could be “our version” of Brees.

  94. Dr Says:

Apologies, but I’d retain Cohen over Bowles—or demote Bowles to DC based on relative performance. Cohen has built a top-10 offense from scratch. We can debate the defense’s talent level, but Bowles has ridden a razor’s edge of getting fired. Credit to him for going back to basics, but it shouldn’t have come down to this. Winning—especially with offense—sells tickets. I won’t pay to watch when Bowles’ team is a coin flip, win or lose—can only bear to watch once the game is over and they have won. Otherwise, Bowles is a waste literally half of the time—and gives the sense that the Glazers are too patient with him.

  95. Bucschamp Says:

Tod bowles you have my blessing

  96. stpetebucsfan Says:

Just remember there are “jobs” coming open and there are jobs.

So who wants to get involved in that spit show in New York with Nepo Baby Woody Johnson calling the shots.

The last time anybody was able to post a winning record there was TEN years ago and that ten win season was only the second winning season in the past FIFTEEN years when Rex Ryan did it with 11 wins.

Oh BTW. Who was the other coach besides Rex Ryan with double digit wins?
Why it was “clueless” “horrible” Todd Bowles of course. You mean he’s won with one of the worst franchises and now with one of the best? How can that be?

  97. BallHawk75 Says:

The Glazers are on the clock. Put up or shut up time.

You simply do not let the OC that has transformed the offense into one of the most dynamic in franchise history.

This is not a Canales type OC.

    Imagine the season without Coen.

Force Bowles into retirement or fire him outright.

He’s a sub 500 HC in the NFL. Cut the drift wood!!

  98. BallHawk75 Says:

Do not let him walk out the door

  99. FortMyersDave Says:

OrlBucFan: Sean Payton was also a scab who crossed the picket line in 1987. The guy has little character but unfortunately, he can usually outcoach Bowles and for that matter the rest of the NFC South as his Broncos swept the division but is only 5-6 against other opponents.

  100. RamblingRhino Says:

Why did Coen leave LA for KY?? He wanted to be an NFL OC on game day. McVay is HC and OC in LA… Coen gets his opportunity to be NFL OC with the Buccaneers. He has shown he is very good at it. Why should Coen not want to continue to be an OC another season here? Money… Assistant HC / OC 3 year contract. This shows Coen, the owners want him here, and Coen knows Bowles has that as his own contract term. Coen gets hands on training as a HC in Tampa Bay, while improving his own skills as a legitimate NFL OC…

We know Ariens, had a plan for succession, with Coen as Assistant HC/OC the Buccaneers continue that succession plan moving forward. That will lead to much longer team success. A win/win for or Owners, GM, Players, and us Fans.

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  101. orlbucfan Says:

Citrus County, I wanted to say thanks for the nice shout-outs. Long-suffering Bucs fans like you and me have BUC PTSD. We’re slowly recovering. I think both Coen and Bowles will be at One Bucs next year. Dirk Koetter was the first OC who actually started building a decent Bucs Offense. Sadly, Jameis turned into a bust, but thems the breaks. The rest of the Offense sure didn’t. They would have won that second SB with a Brad Johnson at the helm. Bowles’ Defense was a HUGE part of that victory, too. You can bet this ECFL Bucs punter will be parked in front of my computer with headphones on listening to the Radio gang Sunday nite. I hate the Cowboys. Go get ’em, Bucs!! Make Jerry Jones stroke out!

  102. Dware101070 Says:

Fire Bowles, keep Liam. No question about it. Our offense is the reason we are getting a chance to have a playoff spot not our defense. How are you scoring 30 points a game and losing.

  103. Citrus County Says:

    orlbucfan Says:
December 20th, 2024 at 9:21 am. They would have won that second SB with a Brad Johnson at the helm.
    ^^^^^
    That’s a good friggin’ point.
