Shaq Barrett Clear For Tampa Landing

December 27th, 2024

Still drinking Cam Newton’s Gatorade?

Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett is now formally a free agent. He cleared waivers, per the NFL Network ticker.

That means he’s free to sign with the Bucs after being cut by the Dolphins this week.

Shaq signed a fat contract with Miami in free agency back in March. He retired just prior to training camp in July. Months later, he told Kay Adams of Up & Adams that he is interested in returning for one NFL team: your Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Sadly, the Bucs could use Shaq.

Joe suspects Shaq has more to offer than bottom-of-the-roster edger rusher José Ramirez, and very possibly Chris Braswell and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. Collectively, the Bucs edge rushers have combined for a paltry eight sacks this season.

His agent, oily Drew Rosenhaus, said publicly that Shaq is in great shape.

If Shaq is signed, which feels like a sure thing, Joe suspects it will be next week, so the Bucs can save the price of a game check on Sunday and give Shaq a chance to practice.

Also, (gulp!) the Bucs could be eliminated from postseason contention Sunday with a home loss to the Panthers and a Falcons win at Washington. Joe doesn’t expect that to happen, but Joe gets why the Bucs would wait to be certain there’s a point to putting Shaq on the roster.

Why not…maybe he can tip or bat down a pass….tell him to bring one of his lawn chairs to replace Jamel Dean.

  2. Steven #55 Says:

Get him signed and out there Sunday – Panthers aren’t going to roll over

  3. AJ Turn up Says:

I wouldn’t be opposed to the move he can atleast provide some veteran knowledge to help the young players. The simple and obvious option for Bowles is to play more aggressive which means more man press coverage.

  4. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Blown Hamstring in 3..2..1

  5. Billyboy Says:

We lost to the cowboys that’s the season

  6. Mac Says:

AJ when he did vs Carolina it went well. When he went zone which he does 3/4 of every game they get torn up. Bowles will do what he always does. Find ways to make it easy for the offense he is playing against. Can’t wait to see Kancey and Vea drop back in coverage guarding Thielan. I mean what could go wrong?!

  7. BA's Red Pen Says:

Shaq? Come on man. Who’s next? Simeon Rice and Marcus Jones

  8. Dewey Selmon Says:

He’ll pull a hammy by the 3rd quarter. I don’t see him being productive at all. Now next year????

  9. GoneGator Says:

We better show up on both sides of the ball against the Panthers. Anyone looking past them or who considers them an easy opponent is a fool. They have played very close games against very good opponents. They basically beat us several weeks ago saved by hero ball by the D.

Canales has his team playing hard. This IS being viewed as a big game to them… They will not be laying down.

If we put together a semi-conplete game we should win but we suffer from multiple personality disorder so you never know which Bucs team will show up. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Give him a physical and a tryout. He retired for a reason. Maybe he thought he would get suspended or something, or maybe he didn’t care for playing elsewhere.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    League minimum.

  12. Watzz Says:

Get. It. Done. Love Shaq, he’s a baller! Let’s get it! GO BUCS!!

  13. Hearty Dikerson Says:

You all are delusional if you think he’s gonna come in and make a difference. He was a ghost last year, and hasn’t played all season.

The most depressing part of this whole pass rush situation is Braswell. An Alabama guy, which means he should have had great coaching, selected in the 2nd round, has done absolutely nothing. Yes he’s a rookie, but you’d expect at least a flash or two. Another Jason Licht defensive end swing and miss?

  14. David Kilmer Says:

Heck, sign today , tomorrow, let him play some snaps Sun!!!, why not., If he is in good shape and likely excited, don’t see what there is to lose
    Sign the Man!!!

  15. OR Buc Says:

Lol. Worried about tiny dollars for a game check vs some stats that could help us win. He knows the system. He’s gonna be hungry. Prob won’t get big stats, but who cares when it’s like 100-200k for a check. Worth it!

  16. OR Buc Says:

He’ll immediately be our best pass rusher. Funny but not funny

  17. OR Buc Says:

    *edge rusher

  18. Oviedo Jim Says:

I think Shaq could contribute more by coaching the other edge rusher
Not surewe have any.And how about a tipped ball or once in a while. They don’t need a sack on every pass play. Has anyone seen a blocked pass attempt blocked or tipped lately?

  19. SB~LV Says:

Maybe he can become the voice in the locker room, because they damn sure don’t have one now other than the rah rah Devin White type.
This “team “ has come out FLAT 3 times this year and never made the adjustment in mentality.
    Jim Mora “ playoffs “
    Mentally WEAK!

  20. Durango 95 Says:

It’s hard to believe this team has reached this depth of need. Hasn’t played a snap in nearly a year coming off a down season. Hoping to pull this defense from the bottom of the league rankings at the age of 32. Playing for a coach that has a 51% winning percentage only two seasons removed from a SB championship. This is the state of our team. Shameful!

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

He could have been recovering from an unrevealed injury. Regardless, only a couple games left. Pay him 100k.

  22. Allbuccedup Says:

    Overpaid one year wonder please!!!!

  23. Pewter Power Says:

He’s in shape but is he in football shape and besides don’t sign with Bucs until at least after this week. What’s the point if Bucs will get eliminated and you can wait and sign with a contender. He may have said he only wants to play in Tampa but to come back with potentially only 2 more games in the season is just a waste. There are other teams in the nfl while some talk like he needs the Bucs, if we’re the only ones that would sign him that tells you all you need to know about us

  24. Bucben1961 Says:

Censorship here is unbelievable…bunch of delusional fanatics

  25. ThatAintRight! Says:

We do need pass rush help, but is he mentally ready for football idk.

  26. Vanessa Anne Says:

I have mixed feelings about this.

We could sure use a serious edge rush. If he’s in shape and clears the physical, let’s see what he can do.

He knows the system and the initial spark of actually being back on the field could motivate him to terrorize opposing offenses.

But as others have said, he was a ghost of his previous self last year and he hasn’t played in almost 12 months.

My only other concern is Coach Swiss Cheese.

He doesn’t need an edge rush. He knows better.

He would have Shaq dropping back into pass coverage while the CBs blitz.

  27. David Says:

I expect braswell and Yaya to take big jumps next year. JTS should be gone. They should sign SHAQ now and use him in situational pass rush scenarios ASAP

  28. Tom M Sumner Says:

    throw $$ lfgooo

  29. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Yaya, JTS, Hall and Braswell have all been huge disappointments. Nothing lost in playing Shaq, even if he’s over the hill.

  30. Brevard Buc Says:

Licht should give next years 1st rd pick and whatever else is needed for Miles Garrett in the offseason. At least he has a career of ongoing production. All the hype about Ya Ya at the start of the season and he’s put up JTS numbers. Only reliables on the DL have been Vita and Kancey.

  31. BuxfaninTX Says:

That’s like saving your best pitcher for the playoffs before you even qualify

  32. orlbucfan Says:

Here we go with the Bowles hating again. Coach Swiss Cheese, that’s a good one. Certain people on here have no clue what a Swiss cheese coach is. Long time Bucs fans sure know it. Bucs finish 10-7, then what? These last 2 games will be dogfights cos of division rivalries.

  33. Bucfan1988 Says:

Greg Auman just confirmed Shaq taking physical tomorrow and will be put on practice squad if he passes it….

    Fresh legs for the team!

  34. Cd Says:

He wants to go to an contender there bud

  35. Bucfan1988 Says:

They can tell Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to have a seat….
He can come off bench with Nelson to spell Shaq & Diaby when they tired..

  36. Tucker Says:

Save the money, shaq isn’t the piece missing for the Superbowl so what’s the point besides blowing money.

  37. Billyboy Says:

We lost to the cowboys falcons twice and almost the panthers the season is over

  38. Aaron Says:

The Jordan is the one you want the real Cam Jordan

  39. adam from ny Says:

get him out there sunday in situational pass rushes…

he’s got more moves than the rest of the room combined…

he might help a little bit…and light a fire under some azzes

  40. adam from ny Says:

    no sows this year:

    winfield
    cam the rookie receiver
    whitehead
    braswell
    joe sho

and a host of others on D too

  41. adam from ny Says:

    no shows this year: ***

  42. Eli Says:
