Shakeup To Injury Report

December 7th, 2024

Bucs ILB J.J. Russell.

Boy, oh boy are the Bucs hurting at inside linebacker.

Pray for Lavonte David. If he goes down, this defense may be fully screwed.

The Bucs were thin at inside linebacker before the season began. It’s only grown worse thanks to injuries and exposure — with the exception of David.

Already SirVocea Dennis and K.J. Britt were out for tomorrow’s game against the Raiders. Now, add backup inside linebacker J.J. Russell (hamstring) to the list.

The Bucs downgraded Russell along with corner Josh Hayes (hamstring) and outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka (ankle) to out for Sunday. So now the Bucs will rely on Vi Jones to play alongside David, a guy who was on the Bucs’ roster for damn near a year before Bucs coach Todd Bowles deemed him “ready” to take the field.

Joe has never heard of a guy who needed damn near a full year of practice before he was “ready” to play. Isn’t that what the UFL is for?

    Clueless Todd!

  2. A Bucs Fan Says:

Time for Vi or AGJ to step up.

  3. Lt. Dan Says:

At this point I pretty much ignore what Bowles says. Dude just seems to play the game to break even. Maybe (glass half full), just maybe Vi Jones is the answer..?

  4. orlbucfan Says:

Bucs have been the walking wounded pretty much the whole season. Nothing new there.

  5. Gofortheface30 Says:

For the past 4-5yrs middle linebacker and running back were deemed as damn near fungible. Well, seems to me a competent middle linebacker is of far greater importance to this team than even edge rusher. I swear to f’ing god Brock bowers is going to have 200 yards receiving tomorrow, roaming free and happily skipping in an open field like the broad from sound of music. And when lavonte David retires next yr we will have no linebackers. Pathetic, disgraceful even. We have by far the very worst, weakest linebacker room in the NFL

  6. A Bucs Fan Says:

Goforhteface30 – I blame Devin White and the friend that was driving Kendell Beckwith around for this debacle.

  7. Dewey Selmon Says:

Steelers grabbed LB Payton Wilson @98. 6 spots after we took JMac @92.

  8. Pewter Power Says:

Pass defense is already horrible so this isn’t easy to overcome but doable. I’m sure the raiders smell blood in the water you know sort of like Bucs when we played the eagles without their top three receivers. Brock bowers is all smiles but tie up your excuses and go out there and take control of this division.

  9. Joe Says:

I blame Devin White and the friend that was driving Kendell Beckwith around for this debacle.

    LOL

  10. ModHairKen Says:

    Opportunity for greatness

  11. Gofortheface30 Says:

A Bucs fan – funny and correct. Would’ve been nice if Devin White didn’t turn in to a head case. Beckwith is/was exactly the kind of big, nasty sure tackling backer we need too. As an aside, really hope we’re done paying for those Brady Years. Defense needs a new identity. Wish there was a defensive version of a Liam coen we can bring in

  12. Jeffrey Becker Says:

    time for some 4-3

  13. gotbbucs Says:

    Brock Bowers
    19 receptions for 215 yards
    Both NFL records.

  14. Saskbucs Says:

I understand it’s a physical game and there is just no way to avoid injuries sometimes but this is ridiculous. The amount of guys hurt in practice, half of these guys have barely seen the field in actual game action. Hill? Hayes? Russell? What the hell are these guys doing that they are getting hurt?

Bowles is probably putting guys on the report and taking them out of games. “Come on guys just sit this week please, if we are really injured then I have an excuse and might not lose my job.” JK, I respect Todd more than that. Hopefully this means the guys who are playing are fired up and we cruise, just like beating the Lions down Winfield, Kancey, Vea etc.

  15. MadMax Says:

@Dewey, i remember wanting Payton because i knew we were thin….but then wr looked needed too….i dont know

  16. SB~LV Says:

2025 NFL draft talk ‘tis nigh …
Lots of holes to fill and chillingly long term starters and fan favorites are at the top of the list.

  17. Dewey Selmon Says:

Yeah Max, Wilson and JMac both had injury concerns. we thought we got a steal with JMac. Easy for me to question after the fact lol

  18. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Ryan Neal is going to be playing a MLB/SS hybrid role

  19. Bosch Says:

Bowles lies whenever he gets a question he doesn’t feel like answering. Part of his arrogance. Thinks he is above giving honest answers. This is just another example.

  20. GoneGator Says:

Backs against the wall w/injuries everywhere but the line… Hopefully we dominate in the trenches and our rush can take over to some degree.

At least O’Connell isn’t another slippery, elusive QB that outruns our pass rushers and keeps plays alive or just takes off. I think Vita’s 40 is better than O’Connell’s 😁

  21. DBS Says:

I am sure we have someone here that has stats on how many years we have had so many injuries on this team. It just seems like this is nothing new.

  22. Kgh4life Says:

Vi Jones can’t be any worse. As long as K.J. Britt is off the field that should give us a chance.

  23. Woodenman Says:

Good point GoneGator that also means our non rush will have more time to non rush.

  24. SenileSenior Says:

Lots of runs plus dink and dunk on offense. Keep our defense off the field as much as possible.

    Go Bucs!! Stomp the Raiders!

  25. Canabuc Says:

    I liked Grier in Preseason
Maybe he should get a shot. Can’t ne worse thant the other guys playing next to David most of the season!

  26. Peter Says:

    Joe had me dead 💀💀💀💀💀💀

  27. Let em Bake Says:

This game may hinge on a special teams big play….blocked punt/ punt run back/ blocked field goal/ kick off runback. Maybe trey palmer shines.

  28. Stuck Says:

Trading Carlton and not resigning D White hurt this team

  29. Joe in Michigan Says:

Todd Bowles “system” is somehow hard for his own players to figure out, yet easy for opposing offenses to figure out…How can this be?

Stuck: Quit trying to rewrite history, Devin White was TERRIBLE last year, although that could just be because Bowles whole scheme is terrible. Probably both.

  30. Joe in Michigan Says:

The Bucs defense got better when White was benched last year, in favor of Britt and Russell. Britt and Russell are below average NFL players, so what does that say about White?

  31. Joe in Michigan Says:

KJ Britt is abysmal in coverage, allowing 71% completion percentage for his career. Devin White is even worse, at 77%. 😳😬🙄

  32. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Gofortheface

    His name is Robert Saleh.

  33. Pickgrin Says:

    Gofortheface30 Says:
“really hope we’re done paying for those Brady Years.”

    Nope….

$29.5M in Dead Cap hits (including $17.4M to Barrett and $11.8M to Jensen)
    +
$18.8M for dummy years added to Godwin’s expiring contract
    +
$2.6M for Anthony Nelson and $1.4M for Greg Gaines

= $52M+ that the Bucs don’t have available to spend on contracts in 2025

Roughly 20% of the available salary cap # next year has to be spent paying off debt instead of paying for current players. And there’s another $45M or so in dead $ on the books for the following two years (’26 and ’27) as well….

  34. Pickgrin Says:

So the Bucs are basically still $100M in debt…..

  35. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Pickgrin

What you so clearly outlined is why, in my mind, Bud Licht is not the genius people think he is.

Our roster isn’t and never has been a well stocked, well oiled machine under Licht. The idea that we had to re-sign everyone after TB12 gifted us a SB was bad management in particular.

He’s benefited from some luck for sure, along with having Greenberg, but I’ve never gotten past the person who hired him.

    It’s time for change.

  36. Jmarkbuc Says:

Oh and good to see you back, PG.

  37. Pickgrin Says:

    Jmark –

Going “all in” during the Brady years was absolutely the right move. It won Tampa Bay a second Super Bowl trophy and damn near won us a 3rd in 2021.

The Bucs were never expected to have a decent team after Brady retired and the mountain of bills started coming due – yet Licht immediately found us another good QB for cheap and against all odds Tampa Bay won 10 games last year – including a big home playoff win and then in Detroit, gave the Lions all they could handle in the divisional round.

Jason Licht is a top 5 NFL GM. Maybe top 3…..

His drafting has been excellent – putting together the Super Bowl ready team that lured Brady here in the first place – and then allowing the Bucs to be legit competitors after Tom was gone and amidst massive debt repayment.

The only “change” any Bucs fan should want to see in the front office would be for Licht to get promoted to President of operations and Greenberg be moved into the GM role so we can keep them both.

  38. Rod Munch Says:

Jmarkbuc – Yeah, winning a SB and making the playoffs 4 years in a row, that’s hardly worth being in ‘cap hell’ for a couple of years. LOL! What a jer–ff.

  39. firethecannons Says:

We need a new defensive coordinator, lets focus on that after this game. It is Todd Bowles who is responsible for lack of linebacker backup.
