Savvy Play Design By Liam Coen
December 19th, 2024This is a really cool breakdown of how smart Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen is in finding crafty ways to get receivers open.
Evan Closky of WTSP-TV Channel 10 does a video breakdown of the ways Coen schemes wide receivers to get into pockets of non-coverage. In this video, the key recipient of Coen’s play design is rookie receiver Jalen McMillan.
Coen found a way to get McMillan to take advantage of open space both against man defense and zone in Los Angeles last weekend, as Closky details.
This really goes to show how much Coen uses motion before the snap and how that motion opens spots on the field for receivers.
The key element to these plays that Closky doesn’t mention? The Bucs’ pass blocking allows Baker Mayfield to have time to allow for the play to develop.
Just good, solid teamwork all around here, from Coen’s design to the big uglies giving the play time to unfold the way Coen envisioned it.

Weren’t we told by Leftwich that motion was just fantasy football, not real? I wonder what Byron’s golf handicap is these days.

I have seen this rodeo before. The Bucs get full of themselves and then don’t show up to play in Dallas. I hope I’m wrong.

indeed lj classic letdown spot after getting buried in positive press. will be good test of mental fortitude

Opponents receivers are wide open nearly every week against our DBs…..it’s nice to see we can return the favor……but not as often as we should.

This offense is so fun to watch. This is an offense driven league today. Don’t think the Glazers notice? Coen isn’t going anywhere.

Don’t swallow the hype guys – you still have 3 games to play. DO YOUR JOB!

Bucs have the 3rd ranked offense in the NFL and the 27th ranked defense.
Bucs have an offensive genius as their OC. Do not let him leave.

I guess I am a casualty of past years when hope turned into sawdust. I really have bad feelings about Dallas. We lose and Penix turns into wonder, and our boys will be watching TV rather than be on it.

Coach Coen is prime steak….
Bowels is spam in a can….
Coen’s value FAR OUTWEIGHS Bowels by great measure….
Don’t let Coach Coen leave!

this is the 1st time since the Gruden era the Bucs have a potent offensive attack that isn’t boring & predictable… The Arians/Leftwich era doesn’t count since we now know it was the product of having All-Pros & future Hall of Famers all over the field and was still predictable and boring after Arians “retired.” The Bucs can’t let Cohen leave town.

Hey Tye. Don’t knock Spam. Haha. My wife is Korean and can perform culinary wonders with the stuff.

This offense reminds me of Mike Martz’s Greatest Show on Turf.

Leftovers had to take motion sickness pills he was so adverse to pre pre snap motions. Coen is definitely evolving his system and has proven to be light years better than him

And some of the fans be potted meat

Let down may be avoided due to stand alone game time. Knowing falcons beat giants ( ? ) should rev up the urgency…. Let’s hope!

Ljsolutions, right there with you.
It’s called PTSD from being a Bucs fan for four decades. We like to be under the radar.

Coen is an outstanding OC, but what HC administrative skills does he have?

I was very wrong about this guy. total stud.

Let him learn that part on the job and lean on his assistants. Can’t allow him to leave.

Here’s the plan.
The Bucs win the Superbowl.
Bowles retires on top.
Coen takes over as head coach in 2025.
Simple as that.

Dave, is that you? I thought that might be you – Lol. Glad you’re Ok

I agree with several other posters above… Bucs better be ready for Dallas. Like the Bucs, Cowboys are playing better. Last I checked they still have CeDee and Micah Parsons. Last I checked, these are the same Bucs that looked God awful against the Raiders after going up 14 zip. Last I checked, Bucs dont play particularly well on national TV. This is a week to week league and a MUST game for our Bucs. Hell, from here on out they are ALL MUST WINS.

Gotta keep Coen.Worst thing that can happen is we skimp in again to playoffs and Toilet Bowles keeps his job.7yrs as head coach and under
.500 “We play not to lose and then try to win” players coach…like dumby smith, raheem(josh freemans buddy)morris, tony “(great christian man)Dungy..Sam Why(che).Gruden. super bowl. Arians super bowl. Coaches that try to win

It’s no different than moving on from a player. Bucs and other teams have players, some good and some even great. But there is a time to move off those players and not offer them a new contract, and or release. Coaching is no different. Bowles gets a C+ to B – overall during his tenure, but he is not an innovator nor has he raised the bar. You don’t let talent walk out the door. Cohen will be the next HC.

Great video, Joe!
Do you have any more links for that analyst.

What’s really interesting to me is that Coen isn’t a one trick pony – he has adapted his offense each week especially against some hot teams. Think he’s going to have some surprises that Dallas doesn’t have a lot of film on.
A lot of it is the smoke & mirrors he uses with motion that hides his offensive line blocking scheme. The line is disciplined and it looks like poetry in motion, especially that counter tray… I don’t typically like watching film studies – but he makes me pay attention. Especially what he pulled off against the Chargers. Really fun to watch him do his thing!
