“Nothing Short Of Incredible” Baker Mayfield

December 27th, 2024

Hardcore soccer fans likely are familiar with talkSport if they follow the English game. If they’re more interested in what Peter Vermes is doing in Kansas City, then they have no clue.

Joe’s interest in talkSport this year was focused on their chat with Bucs tight end Cade Otton.

Based in the United Kingdom, talkSport is dabbling in NFL coverage and chatted with Otton before Tampa Bay were humbled by the Cowboys on Sunday night.

Otton referenced how team belongs to Baker Mayfield.

“In reflection, I think we’ve taken on as a team who Baker is,” Otton said. “And it’s just competitive, a great communicator and a great player. You see who he is on Sundays, interviews, and that’s how he is all the time.”

Otton added that Mayfield leads “elite, high-level” breakdowns for the offense every week.

“He’s been nothing short of incredible since he got to Tampa,” Otton said, adding the Mayfield is “an awesome teammate.”

Joe’s just happy the Bucs have a franchise quarterback. Two critical games remain this regular season, but it feels, smells and looks like the Bucs have a Super Bowl-capable QB for a few more seasons.

That’s rarely been said through the nearly 50-year history of the team.

  1. Pmike Says:

We’re something like 9-48 in our franchise history for 10+ win seasons.

Everyone knew we would be rebuilding after all the money spent during the Brady years, but to me, it feel like Baker is the guy to consistently get us to 10+win seasons and playoff appearances.

  2. DungyDance Says:

Pmike – lol, that’s a weird stat to dream up. Reminds me of Naked Gun, when Frank tells Nordberg’s wife, “Doctors say he has a 50/50 chance of living, but there’s only a 10 percent chance of that.”

  3. BakerFan Says:

The problem is not with the players, it is with a DC that has a complex systems and 11 guys that are on the same page every single play. Change the DC / HC.

  4. TampaBayBucFan Says:

TBBF doesn’t want to hear any whining about Baker Mayfield. It is the rest of the team and coaching that has potentially squandered his efforts.

    Dropped passes…..WRs not getting open…..poor pass protection….untimely penalties….crucial game-losing fumbles.

Non-existent pass rush……awful soft pass defense….untimely penalties…and no tipped or batted balls.

Poor time management and getting players injured unnecessarily.

    NO….IT’S NOT ON BAKER MAYFIELD!!!

  5. ocala Says:

Baker and Coen are elite within the NFL (3rd ranked offense). The Bucs current head coach is currently in charge of the 25th ranked defense and he is terrible with clock management and in game decision making.

  6. ModHairKen Says:

Another story about a perceived greatness on a team that is slightly above average.

Baker is elite. Evans is elite. Godwin is elite.

McMillan. White. Palmer. Mauch. Often. Goedeke. Slightly above average.

  7. TampaBayBucFan Says:

We have spent far too much money & draft capital on this defense for it to be as poor as it is…….there is no excuse…….I’m fearful we will back into a playoff spot and be stuck with Bowles……without Coen next year.

  8. Casual Observer Says:

Agree with Otton’s assessment of Mayfield.

  9. Mark Says:

Not convinced that Bowles will be back next year under any circumstances short of a run to the NFC Championship game (highly unlikely, given how the season has played out).

The Glazers will doubtless consider the team’s youth and injuries in assessing coaching performance, but cannot ignore 3 years of inconsistency, lack of player development (particularly on defense), mental errors, and (most of all) ultra-conservative and incompetent game management. With better coaching, this team would be competitive with the best in the NFC.

  10. Casual Observer Says:

Agree with Mark’s assessment of Bowles.

  11. #1bucsfan Says:

I get what otton is saying but during the cowboys games where was the fight in the defense that is supposed to be like bakers ? I love the way baker plays outside of some Winston types ints lol and not knowing when to just throw the ball away. Baker is a baller. The defense besides a few players need to fight harder like baker

  12. TampaBayBucFan Says:

It would really take some balls for the Glazers to fire Bowles after making the playoffs……they have shown some balls before……but, this would take some big balls.

  13. Citrus County Says:

The Bucs found their version of Drew Brees and have the OC to pair him with.

Please don’t squander Bakers career and this opportunity.

  14. Citrus County Says:

Maybe Ira will someday agree with me that Baker is Drew Brees 2.0.
Maybe the Bucs are shopping for a really good defensive coordinator with fresh ideas for todays game.
After Dennis Allen I’ll bet the Saints are looking for young fresh blood.

  15. Bee Says:

Baker a SB caliber QB? Thanks for the laugh, I needed that.

Baker lost 30 yards on one play because he refused to throw the ball away and keep the team in FG range. And of course, the Bucs lost by 2 pts. No Baker isn’t the main problem or biggest problem but his decision making at times is. And no, I’m not expecting perfection.

This team is too much of a rollercoaster to be counted on. You never know what team will show up. Baker is up and down, Bowles is up and up as are a lot of the players.

The next time the Bucs win a chip Bowles and Baker won’t be here. I think this experiment has run its course but we’ll see….

  16. Alanbucsfan Says:

Most of the sacks are on Mayfield

  17. Citrus County Says:

I just had a thought. If Neon Deion’s son Shedeur were to be drafted by the Ain’ts after being coached by his dad would Deion follow to be HC ? That would put the spotlight on N.O. The media would quickly forget all about the Bucs. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen.

  18. Durango 95 Says:

Dude is a stud. His play is the best reason to watch this football team. Followed closely by Mike. Of course, if you have never visited the Game Day thread on this site you would hear otherwise. Very strange. My advice to you if you have never visited the Game Day thread. Don’t do it. It’s like you’re getting sucked into another dimension of watching football that no one has ever read before.. But, yeah Baker is the man. My favorite Bucs QB ever. And yes I have seen them all. Insert old as dirt joke here..

Re: Bowles. If you take the Glazers by their word. They have said they want to see progress. Well getting this team into the playoffs and not winning more than one game is not progress.

  19. Pickgrin Says:

Otten obviously thinks his QB is the shiz…

To me -the most interesting part of comments like these from Cade Otton – is knowing that he played his first year in the league alongside Tom MFing Brady.

If Baker’s leadership style, competitiveness, preparation and ‘moxie’ has Cade and other offensive players who played with the GOAT this excited to go to battle with him on Sundays – then that’s really saying something about how Baker has truly evolved into a complete Quarterback. One that is absolutely capable of winning a Super Bowl with a good to very good supporting cast.

Mayfield is not top 5 – but he’s damn sure a top 10 QB in this league. We’ve all seen it – and the stats support it.

    Welcome ‘Home’ Baker Mayfield!

    Suck it Cleveland…. LOL

  20. Steven007 Says:

Durango, funny comments about the game day thread. It’s a cesspool of negativity with occasional exceptions when good plays are made. With every negative play, there’s a call for the player’s head or the coach’s head. No nuance. No signs of experience watching actual football games. And of course we have to deal with Munch jerking off all over the thread all day.

  21. Trask To The Future Says:

    Baker is Drew Brees? LOL.

Brees didn’t often struggle to throw for over 100 yards in the first half of games and then rack up tons of yards in garbage time.

It never ceases to amaze me how many Bucs fans don’t actually watch all 4 quarters of games and see how inconsistent and underwhelming Mayfield often is.

It’s amazing how people have such short term memory to forget the awful losing streak we had this season (AND last season).

The reality is Baker has had above average stats that are fueled by garbage time play combined with Tampa Bay being in the worst division in the NFL. So many of our games are against losing record teams.

BUT… no one wants to talk about THAT.

  22. BakerFan Says:

All you turds and tards complaining Baker won’t throw the ball away, when he does you will complain that he threw the ball away and missed a receiver. Durango is correct, game time thread are a bunch of jokers living play by play thinking every player has to be prefect. It is ridiculous.

  23. Bigbucfan90 Says:

I feel like if we are able to retain cohen and “Bowles gets to stay” smh. We need to go after Robert Salah for defense but don’t let my comment fool you I would be down to get Bowles out of here and promote cohen and still go after Robert Salah

  24. Kenton Smith Says:

Hey Bee glad you’re getting a good laugh. You sound like a good longtime friend of the Bucs. Since I’m a newer Bucs fan why don’t you tell me about some of your great QBs over the years and your consecutive division winning teams. You are thinking this experiment may be about over. I believe it’s just getting started.

  25. firethecannons Says:

Baker is fun as heck to watch too, love when he scrambles. He is a true fighter! That said, he makes some bonehead decisions like not throwing the ball away instead getting sacked or fumbling or dumping it off to White which was unsafe.

  26. Gipper Says:

Trask To The Future has a new member for his Absurdity Club with Bee. Why pay attention to what Cade Otton and Mike Evans think about their QB when we have these two blogging heavyweights with their inane remarks.

  27. BakerBucs says Says:

Bee says if baker is up & down go to the season stats for each QB he is in the top 3 in every category people like u have zero qualifications to post on this site

  28. scholarbrawler22 Says:

You can’t predict injuries. I just want to know who is more important for the Bucs’ future, Coen or Bowles? Wish we could keep them both, but it doesn’t seem likely…

  29. Let ‘em bake Says:

Tttf… garbage time? How many times this year have we been in garbage time mode? I can think of two games… both 27 point second halves. Methinks thou doth exaggerate a bit…😊

  30. Pittbucfan Says:

If Baker puts together another pro bowl caliber year in 2025, they should look into extending him beyond 2026. No doubt.

  31. BA's Red Pen Says:

Trask to the Stupid has crawled out of her hole I see. I’m sure she wants the Bucs to get Tebow and Jeff Driskel in here this offseason.

  32. Gipper Says:

    Pittbucfan,

You must have missed it but Baker has put together a Pro Bowl year this year. He will get his contract extended either this year or next. Prioiriy in 2025 is to fix the defense and get a proven EDGE. The proven EDGE will make the entire defense better. With a few new LB’s and a vet CB free agent defense gets
s better in a hurry. The defense will have 5 new players next year whether Bowles stays or goes.

  33. Badbucs Says:

Exactly Gipper. This team will be much better next year. The question is who will be the HC. I’m hoping we keep Coen around. Just not sure as head coach. Glad I don’t have to decide.

  34. Mike Says:

All hail the great Baker Mayfield, you ever wonder how come he plays like he does, it’s because he makes a lot of money for incentives according to his contract. He has a sub 500 pro record and is not accurate with the long ball, that’s why he plays small ball, can’t see over the line, dances around like the penguin from happy feet, it’s not all about the team it’s mostly about his incentives. But don’t forget he has brought back fun to the locker room, not like toxic Tom Brady, 🤔
Didn’t tom win a super bowl.

  35. orlbucfan Says:

More negative jazz about Bowles. I’ll skip it.

    ————————————————–
Don’t wonder why Baker is a Top5 NFL QB, he has a strong and accurate arm, great leadership skills and is Sports Illustrated college QB of this Century. Never wonder about you, Mike, pretty sure the closest you ever got to a football field was playing tuba in your high school band.

  37. Mike Says:

This isn’t college, strong accurate arm, really? Oh that’s right within 15 to 20 yards maybe

  38. Bee Says:

    Kenton Smith

I like Brad Johnson and Tom Brady, they won championships. I don’t remember those teams being excited about or bragging about division titles. Especially Brady, it was Superbowl or bust. Yall aim so low it’s sad really.

    BakerBucs

Baker could be top 3 in the categories you deem important but if he’s a different QB from one drive to the next it doesn’t really matter imo. How does he rank with turnovers? Lemme guess that doesn’t matter to you cuz he’s “Top 3”. Lol….player fans are the worst, they love one player and refuse to mention any downsides about said player regardless of how it affects the team.

  39. Kenton Smith Says:

Bee I see your point about the difference between player fans and team fans. You are a team fan! Except for your QB and head coach. And your words many of our players have the same limitations as Baker and the coach. We suck and have no chance. Thanks for clueing us in Bee!! You are one heck of a team fan..Way ToGo!!

  40. Mike Says:

    Well said Bee
    Well said

  41. Gipper Says:

Mike and Bee should stick with their Ken and Barbie dolls and leave football to people who played it and actually know a lot about it.

  42. Debbie⁴ Says:

All the nay sayers need to adjust their thinking. Baker can taste a ring he wants, and knows he can earn it with this team. Don’t be fooled, he is working with people who earned their ring once and want another one. That drive is still alive in all of them. From the nutritionists to the janitors, they all want that ring. An enduring symbol of cooperation and teamwork. I wish all of them to play to win, and God willing, keep them safe. Good luck. Go Bucs!!

  43. View from 132 Says:

“Baker is elite” said the fantasy football dorks. He’s top 15. The middle of mediocre. With a great defense, he could win a championship. Without a great defense, he’s hoping Washington beats Atlanta to even get into the playoffs.

  44. Jethro Tull Says:

Get a head coach to lead the team and fix the defense and keep Liam and Baker, we’ve got it made.
