Morning Cup Of Joe

December 2nd, 2024

Welcome to your Morning Cup of Joe, an eye-opener to help Joe’s readers ease into their busy workday with a few football links, wacky news and a pleasant distraction.

Distraction of the Day

Tom Brady recently mocked Daniel Jones for quitting on the Giants when it was the Giants who quit on him. Besides, he signed with Kevin O’Connell and the Vikings who just saved Sam Darnold’s career. Perhaps Jones will finally get decent coaching now? Seems like Jones was very savvy here. [PFT]

Five guys who stepped up in a contract year (if you have two guys on this list who are hurt, how could you not have Chris Godwin included?). [CBS]

Hollywood Brown might be back this month for the Chiefs. [Yahoo!]

Artie Smith tells North Carolina he will not take over for Mack Brown. You poor, poor people of Pittsburgh. [NFL]

Dave Wannstedt discussing Matt Eberflus and how to coach an NFL team is like Chris Conte telling NFL safeties how to play. [TikTok]

How badly did inept former Bears coach Matt Eberflus lose the locker room? Well, in the 104-year history of the Bears he became the first coach not to make it to the end of the season (never mind the original owner of the Bears coached the team for like 40 years). But also, his players were heckling him in the locker room after he wouldn’t call timeout at the end of the Lions game. [The Athletic]

Cheetah Hill still plans to sue Miami cops even though charges were dropped in his pregame traffic hassle earlier this season. [Front Office Sports]

Do SEC refs ignore targeting rules? If so, cool! Let football be football! [Awful Announcing]

Ryan Day will likely get fired by THE Ohio State University but how do you can a coach that wins almost every game not including Michigan and gets a team to the playoffs? This isn’t like John Cooper (not to be confused with “Jon Cooper“), who couldn’t beat Michigan and you needed a perfect season to win a title. This is the 21st Century where you could have three losses and still make the playoffs. [Outkick]

Interested to see the detailed breakdown of how awful Bucs zone defense is. It’s out there. Data from yesterday’s atrocity.

Bryce Young was at his best passing against the Buccaneers’ zone coverage in Week 13, completing 23 of 32 attempts for a season-high 242 yards (+5.3% CPOE). Against man coverage, Young completed just 3 of 14 attempts for 56 yards (-9.8% CPOE)

I like the rationalization from James Franklin about why he ran up the score when his Nittany Lions boat raced Maryland, but this is the same tool that always grabs his ankles in key games like he did vs Ohio State about a month ago and always seems to come up short when it really matters. They will likely be a one and done in the playoffs.

The Eberflus situation is interesting, on the surface the dude looks like a Bowles clone, making very poor decisions and costing his teams wins as well as being unaccountable for his ineptitude. I guess the one difference is what the players think of their HC. Eberflus got run out of his locker room while Bowles seems to still be liked by his guys as was evidenced by his giving Nelson the game ball as Joe showed us on another thread.

However, Todd’s line when giving Nellie the game ball about the Bucs winning when they would not have in the first half of the season is a bit lame. True they finally won a close one but the team really benefited from Canales going turtle, the Carolina kicker getting the yips and Nelson finally getting his D a turnover. Plus he gave the guys a day off, given the injuries it might be a good idea but would it not also be a good idea to go over how Baker was sacked 4 times, how the offense was putrid for 3 quarters and especially how Bowles let Young look like a top tier starter versus his Swiss cheese soft zone and let yet another QB score in the final drive of the 4th quarter????? Nelson had a heckuva play, else we would all be calling for Bowles to be fired by lunch time even though the Glazers would never do that (though the Bears never did until last Friday, food for thought….).

Franklin is also fighting history too.

For Penn State fans, it’s still raw for them how back in the late-90s, Penn State was ranked No. 1 late in the season. They played Indiana. Because he didn’t want to run up the score, Paterno put in a bunch of walk-ons in the fourth quarter on defense and Indiana scored like two or three quick touchdowns. The score was much closer than the game.

Next day, Penn State got dropped to No. 2 and Nebraska was voted in No. 1. Nebraska went on to win the national title and Penn State was stuck going to the Rose Bowl.

So you won’t hear any old Penn State fans b!tch at Franklin for scoring late. LOL

Go figure, of course KC will get their WR back for the playoffs. They have had a lot of luck this season.

CBS should have listed Chris with a financial benchmark. They only listed five players. Not a thorough article. They used Baker as a benchmark for Darnold. Interesting.

Joe why can’t I comment about Bowles running such a soft practice schedule? Every post gets instantly deleted

  7. unbelievable Says:

    Frustrating.

Maybe someone in the media can call out his pathetically soft ways

    Joe isn’t deleting your posts.

  9. unbelievable Says:

Something in the filters I’m sure, I know it’s not you personally doing it.

It happens everytime I used the word “soft” in conjunction with practice, training camp, etc
