Mina Kimes: Bucs Defense Will Doom The Team

December 26th, 2024

Free advice for Todd Bowles.

Mina Kines made her prediction.

The BSPN NFL analyst had harsh but fair words for Bucs coach Todd Bowles. She said every minute his defense is on the field, the chance increases that the Bucs will miss the playoffs.

And if the Bucs do make it to the playoffs, Kimes predicted the defense will see to it the Bucs are one-and-done.

In short, Kimes is horrified by the Bucs’ pass defense and busted out laughing while chatting about it with colleague Ben Solak.

“It’s bad,” Kimes said. “The pass defense is just awful. There are guys wide open all of the time (laughs). They are very open.”

How bad? How open? Bowles will have to figure out a way for his offense either to go Air Coryell and light up the scoreboard, she said, or the Bucs will have to play keepaway in an effort to hide the defense.

“If this team makes it to the playoffs, they will not win a playoff game if Todd Bowles plays it super conservatively,” Kimes said. “He has to recognize — and I know he is a defensive coach — he knows his defense isn’t it.

“Call the game aggressively. Keep your offense on the field. Do whatever it takes to keep your offense on the field.”

Kimes made her remarks in the wake of Troy Aikman Cooper Rush ripping apart the Bucs in the first half on Sunday. Kimes also recalled Kirk Cousins going absolutely bonkers with 500 yards passing in one of his two big passing games on the Bucs.

Yeah, that Kirk Cousins. The same Kirk Cousins who was benched by the Dixie Chicks last week.

The current NFC South-leading Dixie Chicks.

When is the last time you saw a team in a playoff chase with three games left (at the time) bench its healthy starting quarterback?

Yet he put up 500 yards on the Bucs.

Kimes had a kind request for Bowles to perhaps save the Bucs’ season.

“Coach the team like you know your defense sucks.”

    No kidding.

Can’t blame the multitude of injuries, fumbles. dropped passes and a bunch of miscues entirely on Bowles. Players have to execute. But Mia aint wrong, Bowles lack of aggressive decisions to win games is a troubling trait, IMO . Its take a chance time in part because he did not do it early in the season.

    ^^^^ Mina ^^^^

  4. Winny Testaverde Says:

She’s brutally honest…and accurate. This is why missing the playoffs wouldn’t be the end of the world…but hopefully the end of The Bowles Era. Seems like a solid citizen type in a role beyond his capacity. Just as The Bucs are paying for The Brady Years…this is where they are also paying for the Arians Era. Arians lined this head coaching opportunity up for Bowels out of loyalty. Arians was a godsend…but Bowles was best under his watch ( while hopefully not covering Cupp with a safety to thwart your own comeback ).

  5. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

While true, it’s also a result of the coaching change happening so late compared to others. BA stepped down and it was too late to do a proper search. It’s why I won’t ever go full fire on Todd, because he was truly the best option at the time.

Now, why BA stepped down when he did is an entirely different discussion. But it’s another reason I don’t fault Baker for the “controversial” comments about people being stressed out when he got here. People wanting to give Baker a hard time about that act like the boat parade just docked when he got here.

  6. Nick jannette Says:

I like coach Bowles, but we should fire him and make Liam the. Coach!

  7. darengibo Says:

So the defense is going to kill this team. Defense.

Our head coach is a what? Say it with me… a defense guru.
    DEFENSE guru.
    Defense.
    Guru.

Um, can this be any more clear to Glazers?
Fire the guru in charge of this “EFENSE” (We got no D!)

  8. Jeff Says:

Clueless Todd strikes again! Folks, Todd MUST be fired. Dude can’t scheme a defense. Bucs will lose this weekend. 30-20 Panthers.

  9. BuccaDAWG Says:

She’s correct, as long as the Bucs play their don’t get close zone Defense they really will not have much of a chance. 1 & out for sure

  10. Truth be Told Says:

She is right on. This is why the tough decision to be made at the end of the season is get rid of Bowles and keep Liam. This team’s strength is its offense and this coach can not get away. Go Bucs!

    ^^^^^^^^^

Have you watched the Bucs this year? The defense is terrible.

  14. Kenton Smith Says:

Dadgummit I’ve seen and heard enough! And I’m not some idiot male chauvinist with a closed mind. But the long, flowing locks, perfect makeup and slightly plunging neckline might scream football (defense) savant to some I know better. Jeez Joe! For this story you should have had less content and more photos. And quit insulting my intelligence!

  15. firethecannons Says:

One way the Bucs win is if it is pouring down rain and it comes down to the run game and both sides are running the ball–our defense I think stands a chance against the panthers run team then.

  16. Bucsfan951 Says:

Mina, we’ve been screaming this same thing for the past two seasons. Hopefully the Glazers finally do something about it this offseason.

Who knew Todd Bowles went by the handle “fishhawkbuc”?

  18. Bill Kilmer Says:

Hey Guys, she is just saying and seeing what we have been saying and seeing all along. I don’t think she said anything profound here, simply the facts!! The defense has fooled us a few times, but not for long. I have said for awhile, this is a defense that is darn hard to watch. I know I cringe when the opposing team has 3rd and long cause chances are it is going to be a big play, yes dare I say over the middle.
If somehow we make the playoffs, who ever the opposing team is will be jumping up and down. The Lady is flat out honest. The best chance to win keep the defense off the field as long as possible. Dallas knew that why do you think their plan was to keep the Bucs offense off the field!!!

  19. Nick2 Says:

Todd Bowles will doom this team.

  20. sue moore Says:

    She is right.

  21. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

She was totally dei hire but even her couldn’t get this wrong. Time for bucs to move on from bowles. To much talent on this team for us to be where we are. He himself admits it’s coaching poor execution poor tackling bad game time decisions lack of focus.we promote liam go get robert salas and go win super bowl next year. Happy new year.. Let’s Go Bucs

  22. BucsfaninOregon Says:

What this gal said is exactly (minus laughs) what many (most) of us have said for weeks (months). I know that’s what I said here about two months ago. We have a stout run defense and we get picked apart by rookies, bench warmers, and statues winging the ball.

At many times I felt our team resembled a fly with its wings pulled off.

  23. BucsfaninOregon Says:

    …helpless.

  24. Carr911 Says:

Oh Snap! Mina hit it out of the Park.

Arians didn’t do us any favors leaving us with Bowles ( or Leftwich )

  25. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Bucs don’t deserve to make the playoffs. She’s right. Defense has been horrendous all season.

  26. View from 132 Says:

Who? What team did she play for?

  27. Ed Says:

She must be watching Buc games to come up with the same conclusion most of us here have. The Bucs defensive system is outdated and has been blown to smithereens by some of the most average of QB’s (Cousins/Rush) with depleted
injured skill players. The Bowles blitz hasn’t worked and the dropping linemen into coverage has gotten zero interceptions and given up tons of 3rd down conversions.

When you add in that the Bucs give up more yards after contact than most team its because they lack the hunger and skills to want to wrap runners up.

Watching this defense is uninspiring to fans while watching the offense is the only redeeming quality of the Buc team. Special teams coverage on kickoffs and punts is pretty mediocre too.

2 games to get it together, shouldn’t take until week 17 to figure out their jobs.

  28. unbelievable Says:

I mean, duh. Pretty sure everyone with eyes knows this.

The defense has had about 4 decent games this season. Every other game they’re gashed left and right and especially down the middle.

Wide. Arse. Open. Every. Single. play.

  29. Beeej Says:

I hope they saw THIS on the locker room tv

  30. Mike Johnson Says:

LMAO. Even clueless Mina see the same thing Stevie Wonder sees…….
    Impending Buc Doom.

  31. Pewter Power Says:

Thank you Mina Kines it seemed no one in the main stream media would just flat out admit it only Bucs fans and everyone else was in denial. Suddenly the injuries are the excuse but weren’t during the win streak

  32. Geoff Boller Says:

Ah yes the great football mind known as Mina Kimes who said the NFL should get rid of the Cover 2 defense.

Bucs D is so awful they held both Detroit and Philadelphia to 16 points in beating them!!

  33. #1bucsfan Says:

Totally agree with her. What’s crazy is that this is the same defense that went thru the gauntlet of QBs to win a SB. Back then we had a nasty pass rush. Come on JOE can you somehow someway trade for a proven pass rusher lol

  34. Kevin Says:

He’s been missing most of his key defensive pieces, especially with in the Secondary and Inside Linebackers for most of the season! I know most of you don’t care to include these facts, but facts are facts! Including his top 2 safeties OUT! And the backup to the backups on constant injury rotation. I don’t mind people calling for the jobs of Head Coaches, but at a minimum be fair! Saying that the same guy that limited the Chiefs to 9 points in the Superbowl in a Bucs victory can’t scheme a defense is suspect at best! Not to mention he’s still sitting with a winning record after all the musical injuries throughout this season from week 1! If we win out and get into the playoffs and win 2 playoffs with said Garbage truck juice defense, you’ll all still be here saying Bowles didn’t do his job!

  35. Kevin Says:

And during the win streak, there was excellent offensive production against mainly inferior opponents. And the coaching was pretty good during that streak. But this is the NFL. Any team can come out and play and execute and beat any other team on any giving day/night! It happens, NFL talent against NFL talent can go either way! Stop acting like Great teams don’t lose to inferior opponents at times!

  36. Jeffrey Becker Says:

good advice. hire her as DC

  37. Mike Kunkel Says:

What’s a Mina Kimes ? And what she know about Buc’s defense!

  38. Scott A Morris Says:

Absolutely right. I cringe when the offense has to exit the field. You know the opposing team’s offense will have their way with the Bucs shi**y defense. It takes a balanced team (offense/defense) to win. A 90% plus offensive success on the field compared to a 10% defensive output won’t cut it. The Bucs need a change in coaching for sure. The Bucs pass defense looks really bad. It looks like everyone in the backfield is lost.

  39. Carl Leonard Says:

We ll just have to win the shootouts. Two hands in the ball…
