Mike Evans Threw Helmet, Screamed At Defense

December 10th, 2024

So when CBS broadcasts a game, the network often follows up with a podcast-style segment for sideline reporters or game analysts to share things they didn’t put on the air.

On Sunday, Aditi Kinkhabwala was the sideline reporter and she was seen on TV along the Bucs’ sideline about 10 yards from Mike Evans when the Raiders had a 4th-and-5 play from the Bucs’ 29 yard line.

There was only 5:44 remaining in the game and Tampa Bay led 21-10. It was biggest play of the game.

Desmond Ridder, the Raiders QB, threw a quick out pass right to Jakobi Meyers, who was one yard short of the first down — and about two giant steps from Evans. Bucs cornerback Jamel Dean was in tight coverage.

First, Dean missed the pass breakup, and then he missed the tackle as Meyers scampered to the Bucs’ 11 yard line.

Less than a minute later, CBS showed a replay of Mike Evans screaming at the Bucs defense after that play.

Kinkhabwala added more color to the festivities.

“I saw Mike Evans on the Bucs sideline yesterday throw his helmet and scream at his defense to try to get more out of them,” she told NFL on CBS.

Evans barking to uplift teammates is nothing new, but throwing a helmet is out of Evans’ norm.

He looked super angry via the TV angle, and Joe’s very amateur lip-reading says Evans was yelling at Dean as the receiver great’s left neck vein bulged.

Joe applauds this behavior from Evans, who surely knew how critical that fourth-down play could have been.

Dean would be a hell of player if he had the same fire as Evans.

  1. BucVoyager Says:

Great to see a guy who cares because I was feeling like he was feeling.

  2. NJbucs23 Says:

If Jamal Dean ever lines up across from you, just fun 5-7 yard button hook routes. I don’t understand Dean playing 7-10 yards off all the time. It drives me insane !

  3. Viktor Vaughn Says:

Good, he’s fed up with Jamel Dean too. Please ship him out of here before next season Mr. Licht!!!

  4. Kenton Smith Says:

“Jamal Dean was in tight coverage”. Joe he jumped that pass and I was so glad to see it! Yeah he missed the breakup and the tackle. And even if it hit him in the hands he’d probably of blown the pick. Usually he’s off that receiver and gives him an easy first down. But he can tackle. And he’s fast. But if he gets more aggressive, he’s got the talent to make some plays. Mike Evans wasn’t mad at him, he was just being a leader. BUC UP DEFENSE!!

  5. heyjude Says:

Love it! Mike has the fire in him and shows us that he cares so much about winning. He is the heart and soul of this team.

  6. A Bucs Fan Says:

Dean is timid and lacks confidence. I’ve never seen someone so physically gifted play so scared in coverage.

  7. BigBucFan90 Says:

A lot of Bowles defense is zone due to the fact we can’t get pressure in fast enough on the qb which is why dean plays 5-7 yards off. It’s so annoying especially since Carlton Davis is doing a great job playing man coverage in Detroit smh I just wish we could get the outside pressures we need to play man coverage because that’s when our defense is elite

  8. Beeej Says:

Coincidentally, CD3 is having a pretty good year over in Detroit

  9. Stuck Says:

Dean sucks. We shouldn’t have trader C Davis.

  10. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Mike is clearly frustrated. I saw some of it in the Carolina game, too. He’s been pissed off since the Baltimore game. He wants that 1K so bad.

  11. #99 the big fella Says:

Bucs signed Dion jones today Atlanta ex linebacker

  12. Citrus County Says:

I think this is Dean’s problem; “We Ain’t Really Used To Care About Football”.

  13. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Dean makes so many business decisions a game that you can call him Vice President of Loafing.

  14. ModHairKen Says:

Just like John Lynch! God Bless Mike Evans! Bring the passion. Bring the leadership.

  15. Bartow Buc Says:

Evans is a winner!! He gives 100% !! Winners hate to lose !! His emotional outburst must have helped – Bucs dominated the Raiders !!

Go Bucs !! Beat the Chargers !!

  16. Mike C Says:

LFG!!! You think Mike wants to win a SB?!?!?!.!

  17. Bobby M. Says:

Across the league secondary players have declined in efficient tackling. Winfield is an exception but the days of Ronde Barber tackling by a CB are long gone.

  18. Bucsfan Says:

    Good on Mike!!!!!!!

  19. White Tiger Says:

Dean’s not starting because he’s better, he’s just available. Nothing new here, we just don’t have any options. Hes a warm body at this point and everyone on the field knows it…unfortunately, the injury bug has made this a permanent case this season on several key spots on our defense. You can’t make silk from a sows ear…there are no more “next men up”, not till the off season.

That’s why our best offense is a ground attack that can’t be stopped that churns out long drives…and fortunately we have that.

  20. unbelievable Says:

Gotta love Evans for this type of stuff. Still cares after all these years.

Imagine if every other player on the roster had that same fire.

  21. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

I had never noticed Mike being that angry before on the sidelines, so I went back & watched the play several times….

If Jamel Dean plays on that play with even an OUNCE of urgency, he has a PICK SIX.

At the very LEAST, a pass break up.

  22. infomeplease Says:

I saw that on CBS during the live broadcast. He was yelling as loud and angry as I was at the time. Too many times this season this happened! 2 or 3 losses were the result! It was good to see someone fired up on the sid lineand making plays when the game was on the line (referring to ME13)!

  23. stpetebucsfan Says:

Jamel Dean’s story is not as simple as he sucks. He doesn’t, at least talent wise.

One could certainly question his heart and size of his nads the way he tackles, and his coverage skills are a “bit overrated” IMHO.

He came out of college as a guy who had trouble staying on the field. He signed the big deal with 21 MILLION guaranteed. Can we imagine a human being satisfied with 20+ million and no longer as “motivated”.?

Salaries in the NFL are absurd as is all the money floating around. Having said that though I’m glad the players make dozens of times more money than they could ever need. How many Lambos and big houses and bling will all that money buy.

Again though I’m glad the NFL pays these guys huge amounts!!! Otherwise with the EXPLOSION of gambling on the NFL there would certainly be guys selling out to the gamblers and not on the field.

Someday some shrewd “wise guy” may realize that the stars are above purchase price but if you could get the right guyS, not stars but enough on a team to make a difference…well you guys have imaginations.

I think the HUGE salaries help counter the threat.

  24. gofortheface30 Says:

A certain someone is playing quite well in Detroit and is largely responsible for a much improved Defense this year and holding it down while they have just as many starters out as we do. We got rid of the wrong guy, and Detroit clearly knows how to have depth at the linebacker spot..

  25. PewterStiffArm Says:

I wish he would pick up and throw a bench in discust with this defense. Our Achilles heal has been outed.

  26. Greg Says:

Dean was in perfect position to make a play, he didn’t go for the ball then missed the tackle. We definitely traded the wrong corner in the offseason.

  27. Fred Says:

I’ve said it before….Dean plays too far off his man, he doesn’t like to tackle and he often makes it very easy for the other team to complete passes. I’m tired of his lack of commitment. The Bucs shoyld trade him for a football player. Maybe he could go with Bowles next season.

  28. Les Says:

Dean needs to go ,he plays way off and hardly gets there when the ball does .

  29. Joe in Michigan Says:

Dean isn’t very good at football, and it doesn’t help that the HC/DC isn’t a good coach who ALLOWS this kind of play.

  30. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    Dean is soft.

  31. ElioT Says:

    Dean is trash.

Should have never given him that huge second contract.

  32. Kgh4life Says:

Dean has shown on a consistent basis that he’s not a play maker. He drops interceptions and misses tackles.

  33. AirCasted-BoneBruise Says:

I yelled at and threw my hat. Scared the cat. I get you Mike

  34. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Dean I’m Too Sexy For My Shirt is as soft as a Twinkie filling. I’ve never seen a football player have fear in his eyes as I’ve seen him. When qbs see the whites of his eyes they go after him. Like in the Waterboy ” Where’s my beech? Where’s my beech? There’s my beech #35!” Wish we had a few more Iziens or Smiths to replace him

  35. Chrisonthecape Says:

He should watch the game from my vantage point, regarding our defense I’ve thrown more than a helmet and said far worse.

  36. PSL Bob Says:

I think Mike is becoming my favorite Buc player of all time. I loved Lynch, Brooks, Barber, Alstot, Giles, and many others over the years, but Mike is special!

  37. Day 1-76 Says:

It would be so easy to replace Dean. I’m tired of waiting for him to live up to his contract.

  38. EEK Says:

as a fan I think screaming and throwing things felt appropriate at that time

    that was horrendous and infuriating

make the stop against a 3rd string qb on a terrible team and close out the game!

  39. Pewter Power Says:

Nice spin job Joe lol What “spin job?”–Joe

is anyone going to push Todd Bowles on this or is Mike Evans going to be the only one to hold the defense accountable? Todd Bowles only holds punters accountable because that’s so important to him.

  40. Oxycondomns Says:

bowles seems to be a good evaluator of cb talent. dont need to be spending that much on dean. use bowles knowledge to draft

  41. Rob H Says:

    Dean sucks. Period.
Davis III was our worst cover corner. Now it’s Dean. He’s so painfully inconsistent that he can’t be relied on, except to give up the big catch or miss the tackle when it matters most.

  42. ATrain Says:

    Defensive Guru Bowles what happened

  43. adam from ny Says:

    consider this:

i have never seen dean lay the wood…

    zyon hits…

    dean does not

  44. Trask To The Future Says:

Some of us posted comments on this site about how Davis & Dean were both highly overrated and other fans said we didn’t know what we were talking about. It’s obvious now that we were right.

Many of us are now saying that Baker isn’t elite and isn’t the long-term answer at QB and we’ll soon be proven right again.

  45. Mike Johnson Says:

You’d throw your helmet too if your Defense was rated one of the top 10 worst in the NFL like ours is.

  46. DaivPare Says:

ME13 is right on. If Dean just drove him out of bounds on the angle he had, Bucs ball. Foolish to go for the ball there it was 4th down. No situational awareness.

  47. Joe in Michigan Says:

Trask To The Future: Why are you badmouthing the guy who is STARTING over your wet dream, Trask? Hopefully you’ll follow Trask out the door if some team is dumb enough to sign him after this year.?

  48. Andy Says:

James Dean plays like he honestly does not care

  49. Marty Says:

If Mike already had his thousand yards I bet he would not have been so upset from my experience. Not defending Dean but tells you what Mike is worried about. Evans sure does seem to be a lot more available the last couple games. Still hopes he gets his thousand but making the playoffs is the goal. How many other games in his career has he yelled at the defense ? Just saying.

  50. GoneGator Says:

Joe throwing chum in the water for the usual mob – lol. ‘
Todd and defense bad, Liam and offense great. Click click click 🤣
So misguided. This post probably will get about 6K views. Maybe 1 percent will comment. You think Joe’s thinking about the comments’ “mob.” There is no mob. Second, the defense allowed 13 points and dealt with multiple short fields. If Joe was writing for clicks, Joe operate much differently. Joe writes about what interests Joe. Thankfully, a sea of people care.–Joe

  51. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Not sure where people are getting that Carlton Davis is doing great in Detroit. Every time I’ve watched the Lions this year he seems good for getting burnt at least twice a game.

  52. Bucfan1988 Says:

We are ALL tired of Dean’s 10+ yard cushions on WR’s and then he can’t make a simple tackle to give the offense the ball back….

    It’s a lazy non-caring attitude.

He got his contract and then he didn’t care after that.

Licht better either trade or cut him after this year.
    Has ZERO heart & fire.

  53. orlbucfan Says:

Some of you clowns suffer from brain damage. I’ve read on here that both LVD and now ME13 have thrown their helmets in frustration. It sure isn’t over their coaches. Stupid Bowls? These two great players want to win games, period! They are future HOFamers and team captains. That is one reason why I think they will break their record of 5 wins in a row. I am glad they are Bucs!

  54. Eckwood Says:

The problem is the play is 2 yards behind the first down marker and he didn’t need to be concerned with knocking the pass down. All he had to do was wrap up the legs and make the tackle and it was first and 10 the other way. That’s what Evans was pissed about , he was yelling know you’re down , know your situation , make the play then for a guy like Dean , he seems to never know the down or the situation………… is really really aggressive than with that down the distance to get a little aggressive and whiffs; he doesn’t understand the situation . Thank You Mike as Your Head Coach just cocks his head slightly sideways and does the dumb ass grin !!

  55. Yall don't get it Says:

We play zone because we don’t have fast linebackers to spy mobile quarterbacks. We would get killed in man if we ran it most of the time. We ran man more when 45 could actually play halfway decent. That is all.

  56. BUC4L Says:

He was going for the ball when he should have just gone for the tackle. Would have kept him short of the first down and been a TO on downs. Good thing we won! Go Bucs!

  57. JimBobBuc Says:

Great to see the energy from Mike. I’ve always though he sometimes lacked sideline leadership but now he’s really stepping up the energy when we need it most. Beat the Chargers!

  58. Darin Says:

Oh boy now we’re judging fire inside. Evans misses the tackle ten times out of ten as well.

  59. alba Says:

That would get anyone fire at any company anywhere. ME should be suspended for that. That’s unsportsman like conduct.

  60. alba Says:

Who died and made Mike Evans a coach??

  61. Bartow Buc Says:

Yes sir !! Evans wants to win the Super Bowl !!

Go Bucs !! Beat the Chargers!!

  62. Larrd Says:

Maybe something reminded him of Lattimore.

  63. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The Zone is all on Bowles.

Man is so much better, though more prone to pass interference calls.

  64. unbelievable Says:

All the usual idiots seem to forget that when Dean was out we lost 4 GAMES IN A ROW.

We watched our backups get juked right out of their cleats and look like absolute clowns. I have issues with Dean, especially with how far off he plays against WRs, but the fact is he is the 2nd best corner on this team, and our defense was much worse without him. Some of ya’ll forget the guys on the other side get paid to make plays too.

  65. Jethro Tull Says:

This is an interesting collection of perspectives. In summary, it seems opposing teams take advantage of Bucs zone defense with anbove average production but perform poorly against Bucs man coverage.

Seems the head coach adjusted and got results against the Raiders. Much tougher challenge coming Sunday.

Meanwhile, I’ll just be sitting on a park bench.

  66. garro Says:

Any Buc fan with half a brain alredy surmised as much. Mike maybe should have thrown it before now? Maybe it should have been the HC going off long before now.

Going for an INT on a fourth down play? When you get the ball anyway on a clean decent tackle? Come on man!

    Go Bucs

  67. BucU Says:

There will be a whole lot of throwing helmets when the Todd Bowles led defense fields a bunch of scrubs for the Chargers game.
Jordon Whitehead- Disappointing year then major injury.
Antoine Winfield – Bitterly disappointing year and one injury after another.
Sirvocea Dennis- Been injured since the day he walked into 1 Buc Place.
Jamaal Dean- Continues to play like Jamaal Dean when not out w injury.
    JTS- Out indefinitely.
KJ Britt- Awful player. Gets beat virtually every time he drops in coverage. Then out injured indefinitely.
Mike Edwards- Newly acquired and out indefinitely.

  68. Not My NFL! Says:

Sit down evans I mean does Lavonte throw his helmet when you drop easy passes or cut off your route to avoid contact or how every other play you come off of the field now??

  69. Ed Says:

When I was watching that play live, I thought how could he miss the breakup, is he that uncoordinated that he couldn’t touch the ball? I think most backup NFL corners could have figured out to just knock it down. Dean has been regressing and isn’t playing up to the level of a #1 corner. Its a shame with his physical ability he doesn’t play better. He never was a big hitter but at least he used to break up passes or have decent coverage on opponents. Its gone now.
