Mike Evans Describes His 35-Yard Touchdown

December 16th, 2024

Mike Evans opens up.

When Mike Evans caught a bullet of a pass from Baker Mayfield down the left seam for a 35-yard touchdown catch late in the third quarter yesterday, Joe could just hear it.

That would be Gene Deckerhoff’s voice hollering, “Is that a dagger?”

It sure was.

That gave the Bucs a 30-17 lead and the Chargers were toast.

For Evans, everything was how he would order up a touchdown pass.

“I knew it was coming to me,” Evans said after the game. “Baker threw a perfect ball. I had the corner on the outside which is what I want. I wanted the outside leverage.”

And Mayfield may have thrown one of his best passes since signing with the Bucs in 2023. That pass was an absolute laser, hitting Evans in the hands on the fly. Bulls-eye!

Evans thinks that along with everything about the play transpiring to his wants, there was also something else at play. Evans sort of thinks the Chargers had been lulled to sleep by watching too much Bucs film.

“It was third-and-long,” Evans explained. “We haven’t gone long a lot on third-and-long and they were probably sitting on our routes [as a result].

“[Chargers corner] Kristian Fulton was right there, but Baker threw a great ball.”

Joe hopes the success the Bucs had daring to throw a ball more than 20 yards entices Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen to lessen his grip on the offense.

The Bucs have the weapons to score, or at least make explosive pass plays longer than 20 yards.

Great play more things to come

  2. Hawk Says:

With the addition of the deep throws to their running game, the Bucs put the Cowboys in a rough spot. Do they play with 11 DBs or 11 DLs?

  3. heyjude Says:

Great interview after the game. Mike is wonderfully humble. His words say so much too. “Close-knit team, they don’t panic, and it’s all about the opportunities the team gives him.” So lucky we have Mike on our team.

  4. Bucsfan Says:

My favorite Buc ME13 does it again. HOF WR’s are few and far between. I feel so lucky to have watched Mike his entire career. Mike will be a Buc for life and he should be.

  5. SenileSenior Says:

“And Mayfield may have thrown one of his best passes since signing with the Bucs in 2023. That pass was an absolute laser, hitting Evans in the hands on the fly. Bulls-eye!” Yes, it was incredible to watch!

    Go Bucs!

  6. miken Says:

Just put him in the Ring of Honor next home game and retire his #. Why wait? What an absolute pro and Legend.

  7. Mike C Says:

Now the film study just got alot more difficult for defenses facing this team.

  8. A Bucs Fan Says:

    251 yards to go

  9. Itzok Says:

O line gave baker the time to let it develop. Great play

  10. JimBobBuc Says:

A great throw by Baker that makes up for the poor throw interception. Baker finished with 4 TDs and 1 INT with no points off the INT, not bad.

On to the Cowboys. At the beginning of the season, all the national media could talk about was the Cowboys having a big year. This morning, ESPN could care less about the Bucs thrashing of the Chargers. The Bucs are still not respected!

The Bucs need to win out and that means stomping on the Cowboys. After a big win against the Chargers, will the Bucs again play down to the competition? Bowles and the vets need to maintain the high standard of the Chargers game with no letdown. The Cowboys are playing better, and Parsons is a one man wrecking show. Coen needs to neuter Parsons and Bowles needs to put Cooper Rush on his back. Stomp on Jerry Jones and the Cowboys!! LFG!

  11. Lt. Dan Says:

The Joe’s speculated that this might be a trap game for the Chargers. The Joe’ were right.

  12. BillyBucco Says:

That wasn’t a trap game, they got whooped.
Their offense is terrible without Dobbins.
    Their defense got exposed.
That was an Old Fashioned Beat Down.
    Going 11-6.
Its gonna happen and it feels like when Brady got hot his first year with BA.
If this is Coen’s version of that LTFO.

  13. Gipper Says:

That pass to ME couldn’t have been “an absolute perfect laser.” We have it on good authority–RodMunch— that all Mayfield can do is “dink and dunk.”

  14. SlyPirate Says:

The best play M1k3 made might have been on defense. Knocking the INT away was huge.

  15. Todd Says:

Joe, can you ask Evans one-on-one if you have a chance if his wife is going to take up hemming long shirts?

He would have had 3 TDs and 200 yards if it weren’t for his non-tear-away fashion statement. Might be the difference between an 11th 1000 yard season and not!

“Hem that shirt up by a third, Mrs. Evans!”

And anyone wanting to give me crap for being sexist, grow a sense of humor.

  16. Peter Says:

Mike is the best we in the franchise
    A class act
Baker threw the best ball I’ve seen

  17. adam from ny Says:

    mike’s like………

“i’ll take that 1,000 right about now son”

  18. adam from ny Says:

yes bake slung very nice balls yesterday…

    zipping them in

  19. MelvinJunior Says:

Mike needs to lose the long undershirt hanging loosely down to his ace. I actually noticed it right off the bat before the play where he got CAUGHT. He should’ve had THREE TOUCHDOWNS, & prob about 200-YARDS, had he not been wearing his uniform that way! Just Sayin. IF it were me I would want to be TIGHTAF. Never understood some of the things these guys do… Like, being tackled by your dreds, etc. Shoot, wear that sheet TIGHT, Man!!!! Don’t give them ANYTHING extra to grab ahold of. 💯

  20. Buddha Says:

He was well covered. No matter. Coaches will be using that throw as the definition of a bullseye. Would be interesting to assess the speed of Baker’s fastball.

  21. MelvinJunior Says:

If he misses-out on 1K by just another 30-yards, then he will have ‘that play’ to regret. He was GONE there, had that dude not just barely, been able to grab ahold of that red undershirt hanging down. GONE. And, a 3-TD DAY.

  22. SenileSenior Says:

Baker almost seems to have to have a turnover or two early in a game to get dialed in.😄 Oh well, whatever it takes. Just win.

I found more than one pundit raving about the Bucs win this morning, JimbobBuc.

    Go Bucs!

  23. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

That pass that went thru McMillian’s was beautiful too. Baker put a lil too much smoke on it. That db heard the crack of a who when it flew by him

  24. BuckyBuc Says:

one of bakers best passes in his career

  25. GoneGator Says:

Happy for Mike and Baker. J-Mac is getting more involved.

Receivers are blocking their tails off too. Noticed J-Mac and Mike really mixing it up on more than a couple of plays

  26. MattSpy05 Says:

All the people praising Evans are probably a little embarrassed to admit that they burned his jersey for kneeling during the national anthem.

  27. Eckwood Says:

No, Matt, they are praising his play,,,,,,,,, They were upset about the NFL’s political agenda, and the brainwashing of the players within the NFL just like the Ivy League schools , Matt………… Two totally different things and only some dumbass would bring something like this up after a great game……… Everybody take a knee and say a prayer for Matt. He gets dumb ass of the night !!

  28. orlbucfan Says:

40-17 against the Chargers in LA. I am still trying to come to grips with it. I hoped for a win, but a blowout? I also said 6 wins in a row. This is #4. They will do it and why not 3 more, 11-6?

  29. BucsBeliver Says:

I actually attended the game this weekend from MD. That stadium is legit but it didn’t overshadow our win! On the way in Charger fans were talking so much smack like we weren’t any kind of threat and their defense was going to dominate. By the start of the fourth quarter I took video of those same fans leaving in droves. And once it was over the now half empty 6 billion $ stadium had more red jerseys than blue. It was awesome!
