Liam Coen Chatter Hits NFL Network

December 27th, 2024

Bucs OC Liam Coen.

Joe understands Bucs fans aren’t going to like to read the following.

But Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen is going to be a popular name among NFL owners who have openings for a head coach, and those that invested heavily in a young starting quarterback.

So this morning on “Good Morning Football,” seen on NFL Network, closet Bucs fan Peter Schrager offered up advice to the shot-callers in Chicago: If they want their massive investment in Caleb Williams to work, they may want to talk to Coen.

Of the names Schrager rattled off who he thinks should be the next Bears coach, Coen was on the short list.

“I really do think he needs an offensive head coach,” Schrager said of Bears rookie QB Caleb Williams. :I know this whole ‘leader of men’ thing is such a triggering topic. To me, any coach in the NFL is going to be a leader of men. You don’t get to that pinnacle by leading someone at some point.

“But I would love to see someone who can draw up an offense and get the best out of [Williams]. I know Pete Carroll is being mentioned and Mike Vrabel… but I do lean towards the Ben Johnson, Liam Coen, Kliff Kingsbury offensive coach.

“Because I know you have to put all of your investment into Caleb.”

In general, Schrager is right. But Joe has a hunch Coen may not be quick to jump to Chicago.

If a guy like Coen, who ought to have more than one job offer, looks around, the Bears may not be a strong option. Sure, they have Williams, who is no doubt a good young quarterback, but that organization is a mess. Outside of wide receiver targets, that roster is barren of talent.

The Bears front office is a trainwreck, which stands to reason when it is being run by a 101-year old woman (“This is the way Daddy [George Halas] did it in 1948, and if it worked for him, then by gum it will work now.”).

Look at all the corporate cash there is in Chicago and they can’t get a stadium built.

Stan Kroenke found a way in football-sleepy Los Angeles. John Mara found a way to get a new stadium in New Jersey. But in the third-largest market of football-hungry Chicago, with all that local money and the Bears even owning a casino license, the Bears keep fumbling the ball both on and off the field.

Joe still thinks the team to look out for is New England. The Patriots have a good young quarterback in Drake Maye and Patriots owner creepy Bob Kraft has an excellent organization set in place.

Joe isn’t sure how much it hurts the Bucs that Coen is from Rhode Island, but Joe thinks the Patriots are a sneaky suitor.

Cross your fingers that Coen isn’t blown away by any job offer and that he sticks around Tampa for at least another season.

We are 10 days away from Black Monday. So Joe guesses Coen’s name will pop up quite a bit in the next couple of weeks linking him to openings.

Brace yourself, Bucs fans.

Hopefully we make the playoffs and Todd Bowles gets fired and Coen takes the job. Joe what are your thoughts about the Bus vs Panthers in the rain?

  2. Durango 95 Says:

We’ve been expecting this for most of the season so we should be prepared. Saw this coming like an on-coming freight train. But, I”m sitting here as cold sweat breaks out on my brow. Geez, I hope the Glazers have got a plan to head this off at the pass. This has to be the top priority going forward. Now is not the time to hesitate, a bold move is needed. Pronto.

  3. BuxfaninTX Says:

I’m sure that Tom Brady is barking Liam up to mark Davis too!

  4. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ firethecannons

There are fans that don’t want the Bucs to make the playoffs so Bowles can get fired!

Coen would be the Glazers top choice IMHO

  5. Rich Says:

I’m hoping the Glazers will see the Bowles run team will always be an average one…his record says it all. Our organization is a very good one, the coach/ coaches not so much. This team is screaming for excellence on the sideline, not to mention the prep work in the off season etc. The talent is too good to be average so hopefully management will end this debacle and give us some solid, consistent coaching.

  6. heyjude Says:

I am dreading Black Monday. Thinking too, if Coen was to take a HC job it probably would be NE. A lot of ties there.

  7. stpetebucsfan Says:

Gotta say no matter how it turns out this has been a very exciting season.

Sadly injuries to the top two WR’s put a damper on things but it was the injury to Winfield that really slowed the Bucs pass D. Even when Winfield played he clearly was not his former self.

Despite all the challenges the Bucs are literally still in the hunt! Just two games to go and the Bucs have a 50-50 shot. It’s hard to gripe when your team is in position to possibly win a record tying 4th consecutive South Division title.

It may not be pretty but I’ll take ugly winning over losing any time!

Liam Coen is a young man whose stock is only going to go up! That is unless you believe that young OL with dependable backups is a fluke, that Baker’s two seasons here have been a mirage, that a healthy CG14 and ME13 along with newly discovered targets like McMillan and Otten are all an aberration.

Odds are high that Coen could do as well or even better next season. What would his stock be worth then?

  8. BobbyuBucsFan Says:

Coen will be our new head coach next year. Remember the Glazers fire Dungy even when he made the playoffs.

  9. Buchen61 Says:

‘Sadly injuries to the top two WR’s put a damper on things but it was the injury to Winfield that really slowed the Bucs pass D.’

I respectfully disagree… The grey matter between Todd’s ears is what have cost us dearly. If Lism leaves and Todd stays the bucs will not be in a good place. Liam deserves the opportunity to show what he has and he deserves it here. After 3 years of 500 football and a defense going in the wrong direction all Todd deserves is the door.

  10. HC Grover Says:

They get Coen and we get Bowles again…..Oh Well another Buc Up.

  11. Cobraboy Says:

Yeah, it’s been a fun season, offensive does make it more fun, but I do believe the D has underperformed almost all season.

  12. Pmike Says:

Keep your heads up Bucs fans

Remember last year when we lost the “Baker whisperer” Dave Canales to an HC gig…. No one was expected to be able replace what Canales and Baker had….

Then we found a no name candidate in Coens and he performed better than Canales

Our front office is very good at find play callers – especially guys who are not wel known

  13. Scott Says:

I said the same thing about Canales last year. He’s gone.

  14. ModHairKen Says:

I bet he likes Tampa, as a place to live with young kids. Quality of life matters.

Chicago and NYJ and LV have bad owners. And bad weather.

  15. unbelievable Says:

I agree with Buchen. We actually won several games without Winfield early in the season. Our defensive woes are more from Whitehead being a shell of his former self, and having no talent or depth at ILB besides Lavonte. Britt was getting exposed weekly, and while SVD looked better in his place at times, he’s clearly injury prone and not reliable. Add to that our non-existent pass rush, and you have a defense that you just can’t count on. Which means it was all on the offense to outscore everyone, so when we lost both Mike and Chris, that became too big a hill to climb.

I’ve been saying it since week 3, but the offense basically has to score 30 points every week for us to have a chance at winning. Defense just can’t be counted on, although they have played well against wounded ducks (Philly w/out their 2 WRs, LAC without their main RB, the Giants, Raiders, etc.)

  16. Tye Says:

Having one of the leagues WORST HCs just make the future bleak and snuffs out all flames of hope for winning!

  17. Mac Says:

Pats and .Raiders are the two teams that worry me. Brady will have a hand in the Raiders hire and loves Coen and his offense. Either way I see a 1% chance Coen returns next season unfortunately and we will be stuck in the sewage with a Toilet!

  18. BucVoyager Says:

If the Bucs miss the playoffs and we get Coen as a consolation prize, I wouldn’t be all that mad. If the Bucs miss the playoffs and keep Bowles, I’d be downright pissed.

  19. BA's Red Pen Says:

Coen is One and Done here.

  20. firethecannons Says:

BucAnthem I want the Bucs to make the playoffs and then Bowles gets fired, do not want to lose Coen and this team could hire a decent DC. First decent run game we have had since I first started to watch in the early days of Jameis. Todd Bowles is replaceable.

  21. Chad Says:

Fire Bowles and hire Liam as head coach, that’s how you keep him. He came to the Bucs for a chance to run an offense and he wanted to be reunited with baker, he can do all that by coaching the bucs

  22. Bobby Says:

If Liam goes anywhere in January cause Bucs sure aren’t going anywhere other than into the offseason in February. Jason Licht and staff “failed” to address the edge rush and linebacker this season. Sirvoccea is going to be good “if” he stays healthy during his career….But Jason “failed” to address linebacker. Bucs have Legendary Lavonte David who is probably in his “final” season. Hope Glazers do a tribute of some sort to David in Sunday’s game against Carolina. Jamal Dean is overpaid too and doesn’t stay healthy, Look at Carlton Davis in Carolina. He still can’t play an entire season without missing games. Considering what they pay Carlton. Good move Jason.I don’t believe “any” Cornerback should make 20 plus million in one season that can’t catch interceptions. Jamal is not good in zone coverage. Todd still has yet to draft and develop an “edge rusher” in this league….
Glazers don’t let Liam Cohen leave. Todd still can’t manage calling timeouts in crucial game moments. Last January against Detroit he failed call a timeout in final minute of game. This regular season Todd has 3 blown timeout decisions that were impactful in games. It’s so hard to win in the NFL right…The Bucs still play tl the level of there opponent. JTS is a bust. Bucs don’t feed the ball enough to Bucky Irving. Bucs lack consistency, and alot of other things. Bucs don’t have the nasty streak in them and I love Baker play, his attitude and the most of the package. Because he is not consistent week n and week out. I’ve heard one of the Joes on the Ira Podcast say “ next season is there year” in other words implying that is when they will be ready to compete for a championship. I miss TB12 smd the attitude he brought to this team. Because in every game and every season there is no next season we will get it. There is this season and now. Evans will not beable to ever again stay healthy and play all regular season games. David will not be here next season. RT Luke is going to get a much deserved pay raise. And do many other factors. I’m a second generation Bucs fan. My family has had season tickets since 79. Next season is a losers mentality and need to get rid of that. If your competing in any season and anything less than a Championship in season. You lack the MJ and TB12 mentality. Go Bucs!!

  23. Bobby Says:

Carlton Davis in Detroit* my mistake

  24. BucVoyager Says:

@Bobby, how were they to address the LBs? You only get so many draft picks and I think the draft went fairly well. I have confidence that we will have another great draft. Coach is my main concern at this point.

  25. orlbucfan Says:

Coaching stability is my main concern, period! We haven’t had it lately. Bowles, for all you haters, has kept the locker room together in spite of all the ##### injuries. I really wonder how many on here are fans, as in the genuine article? How about it? With all the b1tching, you would think the Bucs were WORSE than the Panthers! Appreciate your comment, stpete.

  26. toopanca Says:

The Dallas game should have put a damper on the Coen HC hype.

The Bucs defense was brilliant in the second half while the Bucs offense was mediocre-ish.

In the second half, the Bucs offense had the ball for 6 possessions.

Trailing by 9 points, the Bucs received the ball at the start of the second half with 30 minutes left to play while needing at least 2 scores.

The Bucs offense began the second half at the Tampa 38 and drove down to the Dallas 25. Then, the offense fell apart. Pushed back to the Tampa 44, the Bucs punted on 4th and 40. The Bucs offense used 5:53 of the dwindling game time to achieve a net gain of 6 yards and a zero points.

In 2023, NFL teams scored on 37.08% of drives (TD 21.26%; FG 15.82%).

On six second half possessions (two following turnovers by the offense), the Bucs gave up 3 points vs an expected average of just under 12 points.

The average NFL possession last 2:45.

On six second half possessions, the Bucs yielded 12:11 time possession vs an expected time of possession of 16:30. Compared to the NFL average possession time of 2:45, in the second half, the Bucs yielded average possession times of 2:01.

In contrast, the four longest lasted over 21 minutes and scored only 3 points.

Holding the ball for 21 minutes on four possessions when leading is fine. But, the Bucs were trailing on all four of those possessions. At that rate of production, the Bucs could have possessed the ball for all 60 minutes and only scored 9 points.

I definitely want the Bucs to keep Coen. But, that game should be a big dose of reality for the Coen takeover advocates.

  27. Pelsbuc61 Says:

It’s simple. Bucs miss playoffs and they should fire Bowles and promote Coen, Although he needs to incorporate Sean tucker more. Then get a fiery DC, draft and get free agent Edge, LBs and DBs. If hey make the playoffs, Bucs will get smoked anyway so Bowles needs to go unless he wins a playoff game.

  28. Bobby Says:

Orlbucfan, Oh my you said it’s the fans fault right….nope. It’s the fan’s fault Bucs 0-4 in prime time games buddy. Getting national spotlight being respected and considered a SB contender. They can beat Justin Herbert but can’t beat Cooper Rush this season. Bucs can go toe to toe with Chiefs and then play it close to lesser teams. That’s not consistent at all. Fans didn’t do that. Remember recently in a press conference when I recall Kacy Rogers said something about just recently the coaches making changes and playing to what the players do well and what they don’t. That’s was an alarming thing for an NFL coach to say this late in the season. Why was Bucky Irving, one of the team’s top players sitting on sideline for final 9 minutes on game?? That’s where Liam messed up there. But if hey if Bucs beat Carolina that will make everything better right….Im still a fan, so Go Bucs. Bucvoyager, thats a good question, what are they supposed to do at linebacker, not what there doing now. Cause it working… an as far as edge rusher…JPP is still out there right now?? Ravens for example add an extra veteran pass rusher during the regular season almost every season. Ravens keep those in stock and the Bucs don’t do things like that because why???

  29. Bobby Says:

Hey Jason licht fans keep receipts too, got one 0-4 in prime time games.

  30. Capt.Tim Says:

Will Baker Mayfield EVER have the the same O.C. And offensive system two years in a row?
Smart money here says it won’t be in 2025.

Having had soooo many different systems- how does Mayfield possibly keep from confusing the terminology?

How do you fire a coach, who has won his division every year he’s been the head coach

Say the Glazers fire Coach Bowles.
He gets hired by The patriots, and keeps winning his division!
And Liam Cohen is a flop coaching here.
Would look like the worst coaching move in history

  31. heyjude Says:

stpetebucs fan – Well said. It’s been an exciting season. Edge of our seats!

orlbucfan – True that about Todd. The team respects him. We never hear about any type of drama.

toopanca – Agreed. It’s not all on Todd. Other accountabilities too.

  32. Henry Says:

El queso es viejo and mohosa. Time for a change.

  33. Hodad Says:

How about we fire Todd, and hire Ben Johnson? As my mom use to say, there are more fish in the sea. Coen leaving wouldn’t be the end of the world. That would be Todd staying. That’s the real worse case for Buc fans, another year of Bowles. Let’s go for the hottest O.C. out there instead of Coen. Go big!

Hey yahoo, prove you are a for-real fan. Genuine fans actually root for their team. As in, they have a double-digit number in the L column by this time of the season. Sure, winning is impossible but so what? This entire Bucs franchise is the best it’s ever been. Get off your butt, and look it up. Go Bucs!!
