Joe Tryon-Shoyinka Has Chargers Fans Butthurt

December 17th, 2024

Enrages Chargers fans.

You know the Bucs truly curb-stomped the Chargers if Chargers fans are crying about Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.

To put it mildly, JTS has been a massive disappointment for Bucs fans since being drafted in the first round in 2021. He just hasn’t developed into an edge rusher.

But to be fair, Joe doesn’t think Todd Bowles and his right-hand man Kacy Rodgers are any good at developing young edge rushers. The next rookie edge rusher Bowles and Rodgers develop together into a double-digit each guy will be the first. Just check their history when together.

So Daniel Popper who covers the Chargers for the The Athletic showed a couple of clips on Twitter of the Bucs defense and how it hounded Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert.

In one clip it demonstrated how JTS faked how he was going to drop into pass coverage and instead fired into a pass rush and drilled Herbert just after Herbert released a pass.

The very first commenter in the Twitter clip, a Chargers fan, was outraged JTS was not flagged for a late hit.

You just know your team got its tail kicked in if fans are bellyaching about a JTS pass rush.

So if we haven’t developed Kancey & Vita into something better yet then watch out. If we seem to be having problems developing them.

  2. Jeffrey Becker Says:

that can’t be coincidental Joe. sample size huge.

  3. geno711 Says:

    Joe:

Although Kacy Rogers is the Defensive Line Coach. His title is defensive line coach, run game coordinator.

Whereas Larry Foote is the pass game coordinator and Linebacker coach.

JTS, Yaya Diaby, Anthony Nelson, and Chris Brasfield are all OLB in the Bucs defense and essentially in the role of edge rushers in a Bowles scheme.

Not so certain that is intended to fall into Kacy Rogers realm. Seems more Larry Foote and George Edwards.

Foote was responsible for the outside linebackers when Barrett and JPP were having their great seasons.

  4. geno711 Says:

Kacy Rogers was considered the coach for Cameron Wake when he had all those great seasons for the Dolphins.

And someone on the Bucs should get credit for Barrett and his 19.5 sacks. If he had developed that because of his Denver coaching, they would have never have let him go.

  5. Lunchmeat Says:

    It isn’t just Bowles.
Who are the best edge rushers in Bucs history? Simeon Rice. Michael Bennett. Jason Pierre-Paul. Shaquil Barrett. None of them drafted by the Bucs. I guess, now that we’ll be out of cap hell, we will be looking for a free agent this winter.

  6. Jethro Tull Says:

The lack of player development and in fact the proclivity of player regression on defense is a big red flag.

  7. firethecannons Says:

we need to buy the edge rush and draft everything else

  8. geno711 Says:

Bill Belichick took over the Patriots in 2000. He has run a version of the 3-4 defense with some success.

The 1st under 26 year old edge rusher Belichick develops into a a double-digit guy did not happen until 2013. His 14th season with the Patriots.

Belichick had 3 Super Bowls and an undefeated regular season up to that point without having developed a rookie edge rusher into a double digit sack guy.

Lots of ways to win in the NFL.

  9. Joe Says:

That’s what Joe tries to tell Ira.

  10. Jethro Tull Says:

One way to lose in the NFL is to keep playing ultra Charmin soft shell zone. Coach has proven the team can win with less of that. Let’s pray it continues.

Double Ceedee and over commit to stopping Micah Parsons. Should happen. Will it? We have the right to question.

  11. Joe Says:

Shaq was a veteran when Bowles and Rodgers got a hold of him. And props to Bowles and Rodgers for working with him.

Joe’s point is valid. Name a rookie edge rusher than Bowles and Rodgers turned into a double-digit sack guy. If you have to go back to Cameron Wake (good research) that sort of backs up Joe’s point. One guy 15 years and four teams ago.

Joe is not one to bank on accidents and outliers, which is what happens if a team happens to win without an edge rush. If a team is going to try to win without an edge rush, that better be a powerful defense that can overcome in many other areas. Not sure the Bucs are there on defense yet.

I would like to know what edge rushers in the NFL were developed if not highly touted coming out of college…

  13. Drunkinybor Says:

Hahaha hilarious and oh so true.

  14. bob in valrico Says:

If all it takes is development to get an edge rusher every team would have one or two. The most successful edge rushers usually have all the skills when drafted.
Its a gamble after that. They have to have the right combination of a motor, speed, upper body strength
and flexibility to bend and get off blocks, just to name a few skills needed. Many are drafted but few are developed. If you truly want to develop a top edge rusher,
then get a ShaQ, JPP or Simeon or other proven edge rusher as a coach. They have the skills and if anybody can teach it would be somebody like that. I have a feeling Shaq would love to be a part of this organization.

    ^^^^^^^^
Of the top 25 sack leaders in 2024, 10 were taken in the 3rd Round or later (Hendrickson, Hunter, Greenard, Van Ginkel, Z. Smith, Sweat, Luvu, Cooper, Sieler, and Maxx Crosby).

Defensive Line Coach Kacy Rodgers boasts a remarkable track record for maximizing the potential of players drafted under his tutelage.

    Case In Point:

    Dallas Cowboys

    • Round 1, 2005: No. 11 overall – DE DeMarcus Ware (HOF)
    • Round 1, 2005: No. 20 overall – DE Marcus Spears

    • Round 1, 2021: No.32 overall – LEO Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

    • Round 2, 2022: No.33 overall – DE Logan Hall

Before he joined the Bucs – Only 2 players (Merling, Jordan) out the 15 were considered bust. He’s truly one of the best positional coaches in the league.

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Per: Bill Parcells

“Kacy is an excellent coach. He’s done a great job with the defensive line. He’s got a good rapport with the players, he’s very organized, and he’s got a good plan. He’s very detail-oriented and he’s a very hard worker. I’m very proud of him.”

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Per: Hall of Famer DE DeMarcus Ware

    2015
“Kacy Rodgers is one of the best coaches I’ve ever had. He’s the type of coach that you want to run through a brick wall for. He’s a motivator, he’s a teacher, and he knows how to get the best out of his players.”

    2016
“Kacy Rodgers was huge for me. He taught me a lot about pass-rushing and how to get to the quarterback. He helped me take my game to the next level.”

    2017
“Kacy Rodgers is not only a great coach, but he’s a great human being. He really cares about his players and he wants to see them succeed on and off the field.”

  19. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Todd Bowles has a very impressive list of Defensive Backs drafted under his tutelage.

  20. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Warren Sapp, a Hall of Fame defensive tackle, recorded 8.5 sacks in his first 23 games in the NFL. This includes the start of his career after being drafted 12th overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1995 NFL Draft. Sapp’s early production was a precursor to his dominance throughout the late 1990s and 2000s.

    Comparison to Calijah Kancey:
-Calijah Kancey: 10 sacks in his first 23 games (2023–2024 season).
-Warren Sapp: 8.5 sacks in his first 23 games (1995–1996 season).

So, let’s pump the breaks and give Kancey time to develop.

  21. LUVMYBUCS Says:

So, are we now saying Rod Marinelli couldn’t develop talent? Let’s not forget—Simeon Rice was already a certified beast before we snagged him on that one-year, million-dollar contract.

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Lol, of course not—because Rod had a savant in the trenches.

  23. Colin in Canada Says:

JTS makes plays. It’s a team defence.

  24. geno711 Says:

Thanks Joe to replying to my comment.

Lots of ways to win in the NFL. Bill Belichick defenses show that you can be a top 3-4 defense without developing a 10 sack edge rusher.

  25. Beeej Says:

Edge rushers –I’m starting to think they’re like QB’s–only one in a given group works out

  26. #1bucsfan Says:

I remember that play and to be honest it should have bin a flag. Late him way after he got rid of the ball. Was surprised it wasnt a flag.

  27. BucsfaninOregon Says:

Give me a break…JTS gets ragged on for a late hit. Other than that he is invisible. After allowing a completion he tackled the receiver against SD. HOORAY! He tackled him. Maybe he can specialize in late hits that don’t get called.

In all fairness, I think a 3/4 defense has ruined his career. He can’t seem to get home rushing the passer (not enough strength??) and he can’t cover receivers over the middle (not fast enough, skillset???). If he can catch the ball maybe TE.

  28. Pewter Power Says:

It wouldn’t improve Todd Bowles pass defense but if he got rid of his linebackers coaches you’d see improved development in pass rush development and they’d get sacks and not be top of the league in pressures

  29. Jethro Tull Says:

In order to sack the QB, a player needs to be rushing the passer. Our “edge rushers” are dropping into coverage. So, um, yeah.

  30. Larrd Says:

I was surprised there weren’t a couple flags for roughing. Ten hits on the qb!

There’s a better chance of him working the deep fryer at WhackDonald’s.

  32. orlbucfan Says:

Oh, give me a break. JTS is always in the opposing team’s backfield. What’s he doing, playing tiddilly-winks? No, he’s disrupting something. Sometimes, oh the horror, he gets a sack! You think 40-17 is a joke? It’s not, and the cowpussies better be set.
