Jason Licht Talks Shaq Barrett

December 29th, 2024

On a day when the Tampa Bay edge rush exploded with three sacks, Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett was on the sidelines pumping up the troops and preparing to play next Sunday.

Shaq was signed Friday and the Bucs were super excited to make it happen.

“He was going to sign on Monday but we signed him yesterday,” Licht told the Buccaneers Radio Network. “…There were a lot of teams that wanted Shaq. He wanted to come home.”

Home, of course, is Tampa, where Shaq lives with his large family after five seasons as a Buccaneers. The Bucs cut him early this year and Shaq signed with Miami in March but retired in July. He decided he wanted back in the game and, Joe has been told, Shaq has been training hard for weeks.

Licht says Shaq Barrett is getting ready for next week and it was clear Licht expects him on the field against the slimy Saints.

Barrett, 32, could be a heck of a situational pass rusher. The Bucs quickly will see if he has anything left in the tank. But Joe’s also interested in Shaq helping coach up the Bucs’ edge rushers with his experience.

Is it coincidence that Anthony Nelson, Chris Braswell and YaYa Diaby had sacks today? Joe’s not sure.

Braswell sack was elite. Get off timing.

  2. Durango 95 Says:

Don’t know if he can help much but it’s nice to see him back.

  3. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

Not sure what to expect from Shaq but his presence could help push the younger group. If he can provide some consistent rush on 3rd downs that’s a huge win for the team. I’m glad he’s back! I wish Jones would have got to stretch his legs in the second half. Shaq, Jones, and Winfield could be what we need for a run in the playoffs. Pray for a Redskins win!

I’m just hoping he can teach the young guys some moves / impart game knowledge. If he still has any juice left, that’s a bonus imo

  5. #1bucsfan Says:

We know what we have in JTS. Brashwell should be getting a lot more snaps to get him experience and JTS should be backing him up.

  6. ModHairKen Says:

It’s a huge move. Shaq will fire the team up.

  7. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I’m thinking what if the Bucs knew that they had the second coming of Emmitt smith and refused to play him in the fourth quarter in so many close games this year? Man oh man. So it goes. One cannot fix ignorance.

  8. FlBoy84 Says:

That OLB room has lacked a leader with the stats to back him up, obvious they’re in poor hands under Edwards.

  9. Winny Testaverde Says:

Shaq was a huge FA signing…much like Simeon Rice…helping bring a SB title to Tampa. Fun to have him back…even if it doesn’t amount to much. Joe Try’n blocked a punt…maybe he was inspired.

  10. Oviedo Jim Says:

    As Joe
Contributors have been suggesting all week Shaq can atleast be a mentor and coach to the younger edge rushers.

  11. MJ Says:

the signing lit a fire on those guys!!!

  12. heyjude Says:

Shaq is home. So happy he is back where he should be. The Bucs will be even more electrifying next week. Can’t wait.

  13. Cybetsecurity_intern Says:

Maybe we add Calais too, when the dolphins gets out of playoff race. But then again if falcons win tomorrow we are doomed.

  14. MadMax Says:

Glad Shaq is back….look, i know Logan Hall and Braswell were guys I pushed for, but theyre coming along.

Now we need Kennard…imagine him in that rotation, then bring his teammate Emmanwori, who plays safety but was also a LB….

Im on it Jason, you know me

  15. MadMax Says:

    brids play tonight Cybet

  16. Canabuc Says:

Anybody know the status of Deon Jones? Is he still on the practice squad or has he been elevated? I know we released Vi Jones and Antonio Grier which seems to make our inside linebacker group pretty thin as we only have David, Russell, Britt.

  17. Miller5252 Says:

If anything Shaq will be fresh. Late in the season and a gas tank full Will at least give him advantage against a wore down lineman. Maybe he can bring a spark in the playoffs if the dirty birds lose tonight

  18. Jethro Tull Says:

It’s amazing when pass rushers rush the passer instead of dropping into soft zone, what can happen.

  19. Tony Says:

    @Jethro Tull

I’m sure pretty soon he’ll be expecting 340 lb. Vita to be covering the WRs at some point, too!🙄🤦💩

  20. Tony Says:

    @Jethro Tull

That’s what he’s gonna have Shaq doing if he comes back next week. Covering the WRs.

  21. Winny Testaverde Says:

    Tony Tonē Toni:

VV did drop into coverage vs Dallas and drilled the TE short of the sticks at least. It’s definitely a head scratching strategy.

  22. Tony Says:

    @Winny Testaverde

Oh yeah but I’m sure he’s gonna want Vita to become a CB or S somehow & do much more. I’m sure the day is gonna come where he’s gonna expect the line to magically turn into a punter, too! If he’s still here next year. I don’t know if most can really deal with him after this year because he’s just so stubborn.

  23. Citrus County Says:

After today it would be difficult to argue that Shaq’s reappearance didn’t have a positive effect on the DE room. Next week will tell even more. So what would that tell us about George Edwards ? It would seem to say loyalty reigns supreme, even over performance. That falls on the bossman.

  24. Leopold Stotch Says:

Joe, I thought you didn’t believe in coincidences in football?

  25. itzok Says:

It can’t hurt if he gets 10 snaps a game

  26. Bradley Brown Says:

    “Braswell sack was elite”
    Who talks like that?

  27. Gary Romaniski Says:

Lets release the SHAQ ATTACK !

  28. Big Red Says:

Should have never cut him imo. Ecstatic he’s back. He was coming ott a significant injury and it always takes an extra year to really get back to speed. We seen it with Godwin. This year was the first year Godwin was getting back into true form.

  29. Billyboy Says:

Call jpp as well couldn’t hurt

  30. Larry S. Says:

Hopefully he’s healthy and can contribute on the field, but there is little doubt someone with his skill set will be a huge help on the practice field and in film study. Diaby and Braswell are young and learning, not many better to emulate both on and off the field.
