Jason Licht Expresses Urgency, Should Be Fuming

December 1st, 2024

“Greeny, we only buy the groceries. That’s all we can do.”

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht has handed his head coach a stellar young offensive line, an upper tier quarterback, a Hall of Fame receiver, a Pro Bowl rookie running back, the best kicker in Bucs history and a load of talent on defense.

And still the Bucs struggle.

Man, if Joe were Licht, Joe would be ready to punch multiple people in the face.

The patience of Mr. Licht is incredible.

Yeah, Licht has issues when it comes to finding an edge rush and the 2024 nside linebacker situaton is bizarre, but Joe can’t find a lot of flaws for a roster-builder still paying off a Super Bowl on the Bucs’ salary cap.

Before today’s game, Joe heard the urgency in Licht’s voice on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

“We’ve got to win. Our backs are against the wall. There’s no room for error,” Licht said.

The GM added that this Bucs roster tends to to play well in backs-against-the-wall situations. While that certainly didn’t happen as a unit today against the Panthers, some of those studs Licht put in Bowles’ cupboard had a hell of a day.

Man, Joe looks at the talent differential between the Bucs and Panthers and wants to puke. The Bucs should have beaten Carolina by two scores on paper. But in reality, they were lucky not to lose.

Licht delivered a little hope for the future in his pregame chat.

“Hopefully Jordan [Whitehead] can come back,” Licht said of his injured starting safety. “We can make the playoffs and he can come back.”

I think maybe some see Licht and the current Bucs roster through a rose colored funhouse mirror.

  2. All_da_way Says:

A road win against a divisional opponent is tough. But we all know the Bucs can play better than this.

Licht understands that lack of talent is not an excuse for not giving your best. Lets see if the Bucs rebound next week against the Raiders.

  3. David Says:

Absolutely. They should have destroyed them like they did the Giants. TB has been great as a DC with no 4 man pass rush over the years, but he has evolved into constantly relying on a soft zone when blitzing and quarterbacks pick it apart.
I know part of the issue is the back seven cannot stay healthy. They need the speed of Dennis & Tykee Smith along with a couple new faces next year.
Course an edge rusher. I like YAYA but he is not progressed one bit.

On offense… Liam is a great OC, but he needs to evolve. Out routes, crossing patterns, quick screens. That’s almost the entire passing game. He mixes it up and gets a lot out of it and he’s been great with the running game but where are the shots over the middle at 10 to 15 yards? Where is Evans or Palmer going deep? They have to take a few shots of game.

Not to ramble on, but the other thing I’ve noticed is they seem to start games great and then have a hard time adjusting the offense when it gets stalled and defenses adapt a little later in the Half or in the second half.
    That needs to change

News of Bowels FIRED will be celebrated like a holiday!

  5. RajBucsFan Says:

Any coach that either allows or encourages their highly paid CB to give consistent 15 yard cushions needs to be fired. I can’t watch Jamel Dean do it anymore

  6. Michele Says:

    Please ask Todd two questions:
    1. Why do you have your best offensive weapon returning kicks? Special teams isn’t good enough to risk that.
    2. You need one yard at the goal line to get a 1st down, 3 to score and pretty much seal the game. You got there by running it down their throats. Why didn’t you bring Veta in and run right up the middle again?

  7. Colin in Canada Says:

We need to draft safeties and corners next year. 2 of each. These back up DBs are killing us

  8. All_da_way Says:

Smith was sent packing because he had Davis playing so much off coverage.

  9. AstralTurf Says:

Tomorrow I predict these rankings will come out

    Tampa Bay Bucs
    Oregon
    Ohio State
    Texas
    Penn State

  10. Dave Pear Says:

Secretly, Jason probably wouldn’t hate it if This Guy lost out and he could replace him with a dream team who would bring stifling defense back to the Buccaneers. This rrhea is a disgrace.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We usually lose close games due to poor coaching….we won this game due our opponent missing 2 FGs & a fumble in winning FG range…..

  12. Dave Pear Says:

Bring out the torches and pitchforks. The Saints and Falcons lost, and the coachtard had the team as flat, undisciplined, and soft as possible. And should have and deserved to lose.

This was a loss people. Canalwater is just more of a coachtard than ours today.

  13. BAKERSBucs says Says:

I can’t stand u people on this site u r the worst bunch of azzholes on line

  14. David Says:

Awesome win. Sometimes it’s just ugly and you have to get the win anyway. They need to come out next week and dominate. If not then maybe I’ll look for a pitchfork.

The reality is TB is not responsible for all the injuries in the back seven on defense. He’s not responsible for the front 4 being unable to generate a pass rush on a consistent basis. He’s not responsible for calling. White to run laterally on third and one from the two. He’s not responsible for Baker throwing 9 INTs In four games.

Not making excuses but there’s a lot of things that are not on him. Playing soft zone when blitzing and giving the quarterback an easy out is on him constantly every damn game.

  15. Saskbucs Says:

Lucky is an understatement. Could have easily lost by 2 scores. Should have probably been down 13 points at half time.

I hope that was a wake up call for next week now and we smoke the Raiders. Watching them Friday though, that passing attack won’t be easier to stop than the Panthers. Hopefully AOC doesn’t show up.

  16. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Second-youngest team in the league, toughest strength of schedule in the first half, and banged up all over the roster—and we’re still sitting at 6-6. Outside of one or two games, we’ve been in every single one, right down to the wire.

Like Bill Parcells always said, “This isn’t intramurals, brother.” There’s no easy wins in the NFL, and this squad’s been battling every week. Gritty, tough, and far from done

  17. Bucks 'n' Bucs Says:

BAKERSBucs…..Only 20% of the people on here are Bucs fans. The rest are just jerks making noise (i.e. Dave Pear/ Rod Munch)

  18. Let ‘em bake Says:

Has Bowles had a healthy secondary yet this season? Somebody always hurt. If Bryce hall hadn’t gone down early ……

  19. Rod Munch Says:

Who cares if you get an edge rusher if they’re just told to sit back in a garbage soft zone defense? For an edge rusher to be effective, they need to actually rush the passer, not just stand around in a zone.

  20. Ed Says:

This was not a great victory but rather a game of mistakes from Baker trying to make throws that he shouldn’t be trying and for Bowles not being more aggressive in the red zone. How on earth on 2 consecutive plays target Sterling Sheppard in the red zone? There are better options. It’s frustrating that he gets targets. Also on the 3rd and one in the zone why is White getting a handoff on a stretch run? These plays cost the Bucs. They got 2 field goals when they need to be pushing the ball to the playmakers.

Defense again is so vulnerable to give up 3rd down conversions.

Irving was again sensational and Evans had a great game but other than Nelson’s punch-out on Hubbard, Bowles defense made Bryce Young look like Lamar Jackson. Adam Theilan made a great catch but the Buc defense never plays the ball, they are always out of position and can’t knock a floater down. I can’t figure why Dean is playing so far back and why they go soft zone so much. Defense is not up to the task of winning a game, it’s not changing with this coach. He is outdated and Licht has to be looking for a younger defensive coordinator.

  21. Pewter Power Says:

Licht’s job security is dependent on winning and if the team is barely getting by by beating trash teams either it’s the coach or he isn’t as good at drafting as we think. Either way the fire Bowles voices are getting two loud to ignore. I never wanted him to be hired in the first place but when you come out in a press conference and admit you took the ball out of Tom Brady’s hands because you didn’t want him to turn the ball over, that means you are a coordinator in this league

  22. Dave Pear Says:

Raiders on deck. Aiden OConnell will have a career game, just like every QB we face. Is there a common denominator?

Hint – name suggests a bald, red hair-tufted, red nosed individual who used to be famous for a while .

  23. Dave Pear Says:

PS – Bryce Young won me a ton of money today. That’s the stone cold lock. Larry Ochab at the age of 68 could suit up and throw for 300 yards and two scores against Bowlerama.

  24. MelvinJunior Says:

Just frickin’ STUPID running RWhite like that down there again (TWICE), & with 10-Dudes in the box all along the line, with only ONE WR split out… It’s like, do they not ‘learn’ ANYTHING, EVER!? TEN GUYS. Just continuously, too damn CONSERVATIVE. Every time in those situations. It’s PATHETIC. Just STUPID. It makes ZERO sense. And, YES… Another thing that makes zero sense is Dean STILL laying back 15-yards!!!! And, I’ve been saying the exact same thing about these guys ‘ball-skills’ now, for WEEKS. It’s AWFUL. They NEVER know ‘where’ the ball is, EVER. It’s no wonder why they NEVER get any INT’s. THE WORST. On that Theilen ‘one-hander’ I don’t know if Thomas was ‘pushed off’ there, or WHAT!? But, his head was looking in the ground AND (as they always do) he turned the WRONG WAY (&/or guessed wrong). Just THE WORST ‘instincts’ EVER. They have NONE. it’s horrible coaching, but I don’t know HOW any of these guys have made THIS FAR, & are in the League.

  25. MelvinJunior Says:

I rewound and slow-mo’ed even going frame by frame on that Thomas-Theilen ordeal, spending prob ‘10-minutes’ on it, & I STILLLLL don’t know what the HELL happened there!? It’s just HORRIBLE. Soooo Baddddd.

  26. MelvinJunior Says:

With defenses having to give so much attention to Vea & Kancey, I have NO IDEA WHYYYYY Yaya can’t get to the QB and get any Sacks!? It also, makes NO sense, whatsoever. Yaya & Bras needs to go down to Miami this offseason (all offseason long), & workout on the beach with Kancey!!!! They’ve GOT TO do something before next season… Something different. Hell, ANYTHING at this point. They are drowning out there.

  27. IE Bucs Says:

We have needed middle linebacker help all season and Licht let the Lions sign Kwon Alexander. He has been on the Broncos practice all season and could have been signed to an active roster weeks ago.

  28. Dave Pear Says:

Melvin – right on, I’m digging the outrage. All in on the beach workout thing. But also – these dudes, like their teammates, are all so confused play to play about what they are supposed to do….drop wide, drop center, rush wide, crash, spy????? — that the simply can’t play fast because their jobs are too damn complicated.

This is a radical concept but…..here goes. Pass rushers rush the passer, defensive backs cover the pass, linebackers support both and therefore inherently absorb more complexity than the other roles. Draft and staff accordingly.

  29. Ugotrobbed Says:

    Bowles = .500 winning percentage head coach…period!

  30. BucU Says:

“”I can’t stand u people on this site u r the worst bunch of azzholes on line”””

Reality sucks sometimes chief. Some people like to view things thru rose colored glasses and some of us view things as they really are.

  31. BucsFan81 Says:

Talent not the problem. It’s coaching and injuries. Those are the two biggest things holding this team back.

  32. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

    “Load of talent on defense….”

You mean the edge rushers, middle linebackers, safties and corners that I constantly am reading here are horrible and an example of why JL sucks as a GM when the narrative requires it?

    Pick a lane.

  33. TheMightyVH Says:

This defense flat out sucks. Need a complete overall. Three guys are earning their pay in Vea, Kancey and Lavonte. Not sure what’s up with Winfield. Secondary is atrocious. ZERO pass rush outside of 50 and 94. Corners line up 8 to 10 yards off ball. Scheme sucks. Most of our defensive starters are backups and we can’t tackle. The sad reality is that the Bucs will win just enough games to save Bowles ass. We will win division and make playoffs. And it will be wash, rinse, repeat in 2025.

  34. Henry Says:

“We’ve got to win. Our backs are against the wall. There’s no room for error,” Licht said.

Let me put on my readers and translate for you.

“We’ve got to win. Coach Repus Blows a$$ is against the wall. There’s no room for error”

  35. unbelievable Says:

Eh, it’s a divisional opponent and the truth is the Panthers have been playing a lot better the last few weeks. They took the Chiefs down to the wire, just like we did.

I expect our defense to look like trash, because they are trash. It was the offense that was disturbing. Multiple bad snaps and pre-snap penalties, dropped passes, bad INTs and holding the ball too long from Mayfield, etc.

Division was on the line and the team came out half asleep. Again. This is a hallmark of Todd Bowles. They never come out going for the kill because Bowles passive demeanor trickles down to everyone.

  36. orlbucfan Says:

Normally the Bucs lose games like this one, even when the opponent gives them every break in the universe. They won and I hope the lesson sticks with them. This Bucs team has had a boatload of critical injuries this season, and they’re still in the playoff hunt. Now why is that?!? You so-called ‘football Einsteins’ on here got any sensible answers? Crickets, huh?
