Confident Baker Mayfield = Top-5 QB

December 30th, 2024

Baker Mayfield has fired 39 touchdown passes this season.

Consider that no NFL QB hit that total in 2023 and only one got there in 2022.

His success this season somehow doesn’t feel as special as it really is because Mayfield isn’t considered one of the NFL’s glamour quarterbacks. You know the names. They’re the guys the national media slobbers over.

Only Joe Burrow has more TD throws than Mayfield this season (42), and a couple of ex-QB analysts were showing the love today after Mayfield’s five-touchdown outing yesterday.

Dan Orlovsky was barking on ESPN’s “First Dump” about how when Mayfield is playing confidently like he has been recently, the result is top-5 quarterback play.

“He just cuts it, man,” the former Bucs QB ranted.

NBC guru Chris Simms, another ex-Bucs QB, noted how Mayfield throwing fastball after fastball fearlessly is very impressive and speaks to his confidence in the players around him.

Mayfield isn’t throwing to a special receiving/tight ends group since Chris Godwin went down injured, Orlovsky added, agreeing with his co-host’s notion that Mayfield has the quietest 39 touchdown passes in NFL history.

Joe hopes Mayfield keeps getting left out of most star quarterback discussions. It seems to motivate him.

And to think the bucs got him for 100 mill. 3 years. What a deal dalling.

  2. KABucs Says:

Look at the contracts that Watson and Lawrence have and realize those teams are going to have a ton of trouble trying to improve all those other positions. They pretty much have to draft perfectly, and drafting well at every level is with the Bucs do best this past couple seasons. With a bunch of great young position players and a youthful yet super skilled o-line, Bucs can throw a more money and draft picks at the inside and outside land linebacker position now, not to mention some secondary help. I think we should pick up a stud edge rusher if possible in the off-season, we’ve had better luck there than through drafting them (see JPP & Barrett for proof… even rice if you want to get historical). We’ve drafted solid complimentary edge rushers over the years but never an elite stud. The future is bright!!

  3. Eric Says:

Be a few more without the injuries to the receiving core.

Liking that number 15, dude is a play maker.

  4. Gipper Says:

Just Google: ESPN 2024 NFL QB passing stats. Mayfield is number 2 behind only Joe Burrow.

It’s nonsense to suggest that Mayfield isn’t a “glamour quarterback.” That’s only because the media doesn’t understand talent. Baker has always had one of the best arms in the league, probably second to only Josh Allen. Makes all the throws and is a great leader.

  5. drdneastup Says:

They originally got him for a paltry $4 million while Cleveland forked over millions more for a sexual offender in guaranteed money that they now want to rid themselves of. If I’m a Browns fan I’d be boiling mad. Same with the Panthers.

  6. BradyGronk Fan Says:

I always believed he was an above average QB who got shafted by the Browns. They deserved Watson and the Bucs front office has continued their genius streak first with Brady and the hired mercenaries to win a SB, and now with Mayfield to be competitive for years to come.

I slowly came around to Mayfield being more than just above average but a top 10. But his decision making and throws have gone up a level or two this year. He doesn’t look like a top 5 QB, he is a top 5 QB. Congratulations Bucs nation. More SBs to come.

  7. Greg Says:

I remember a time when our fans were saying he shouldn’t be our starter and Trask was the future lol.!!

    Baker is a top 5 QB ?????
And many folks mocked me for saying the Bucs had found their version of Drew Brees. 50 years of following the Bucs has provided much insight. So when I say Baker and Liam must be kept together, I say it with emphasis. If Liam will stay as OC and agree to move up to HC when the time is right great, keep Todd but make him hire a DC and retool the defense. And get him some help on the sideline (not in the headset) to assist in game awareness. That could be a very winning formula.

    Citrus County,

Baker is a Top 2 QB. The stats don’t lie. ESPN 2024 NFL QB stats. Yardage, completion Percentage, TD’s……Also it has taken awhile for the O line to jell. Just now he has been able to look long and get time to throw.

  13. Marky mark Says:

As far as Coen leaving I would not stress. The narrative that Baker is only good because of an OC is pure BS. Baker makes them look good. The key is a good working relationship. Bakers Rookie year OC is available Freddy Kitchens. So is Bakers best Browns year 2020 OC Alex Van Pelt.

Title nailed it….When Bakers playing with confidence, calm and in rhythm, there are really not many QB’s I’d rather have.

Love to see him prove all the ignorant haters wrong again!

  17. Gipper Says:

    Citrus,

I read and understood. Know you are a Mayfield believer just wanted all to be aware of just how highly baker is performing this year. Keep in mind that Baker has thrown the ball maybe 70 times fewer than Joe Burrow this year. The top 3 2024 statistically are Burrow, Baker and Lamar.

  18. HC Grover Says:

    He earning his pay.

  19. Kenton Smith Says:

Dave Canales surprised me this year. No way did I think he’d win 4 games. I heard all last season that Canales had “revived” Mayfields career. And I knew that wasn’t true. Canales like many of Bakers OCs stymied him (like running up the middle on first and second downs) and Baker would be looking at 3rd and 8 or 9. Our first game against Carolina they scored and took a 3 point lead with 30 seconds to play. Bucs perfectly used all 3 timeouts perfectly. Win in overtime. Canales had to be crestfallen. I thought it was perfect Mayfield. He keeps receipts. And as everyone could see yesterday he keeps all the receipts. I don’t see the Panthers beating our Bucs in years ahead. At least while Bakers still playing and Canales is still at Carolina. Joe said our offense played like they were pi’sed off yesterday. Starting with Mayfield that’s exactly how they played.

  20. MelvinJunior Says:

Allen. Burrow. Jackson. Herbert. Mahomes. Nobody is taking Baker over ANY of these guys here, but you can make a good argument for him to be anywhere from #6 to #11 though, at least for this season. Outside of Mahomes, when you factor in the $… Hell, you could argue him being #2 right now!!!!

  21. Citrus County Says:

Thanks for the clarity Gipper. So many comments that are posted here are just random and meaningless thoughts with no context. I’m not saying you are one of those commenters. I try to post comments that placed in context with full and complete thoughts. This forum gives me the opportunity to express my thoughts and opinions but more than that I use it to keep my writing and communication skills sharp along with exercising my vocabulary. In a way it is continuing education, something I feel is very important. I’m very critical of myself when the proofreading and editing isn’t up to par.

  22. Durango 95 Says:

I read these forums and sometimes shake my head at the absolute non-sense that gets posted. We get an insanely good offense and you get grown men posting here that their feelings get hurt when people like to talk about it. Imagine that.

As a fan from day one.-At the first home game in franchise history-Never thought I would see an offense of the calibre that we Bucs fans have today. The Brady season were transient. Mayfield and Coen we are danged lucky to have them and all the stops need to be pulled so that they don’t end up somewhere else. Which is why I am adamant that if it takes getting rid of a less than .500 coach to keep this duo together then that’s exactly what should happen. Post haste. I don’t want to hear about some mythical automatic pass that TB should get simply by getting the team to the playoffs. The Glazers said clearly that they want to see progress from the team. The only progress that has been made this season has come from Coen and Mayfield. Don’t let get away.

  23. GoneGator Says:

Baker is my favorite QB. Since Cleveland. Always knew what was possible with him.

And I’ve said it before but he’s got a way to go before he hits his ceiling. If we can keep this group together (players) then he has a chance to be much much better. 👍🏼

  24. BucsMinisterFuller Says:

I just want them to bring back those Baker and the keys to the stadium commercials.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The dude is most definitely looking more and more like a Drew Brees. And Licht helped a lot building a good OL for him.

Now I know you are manipulating the comments.

Something definitely fishy with the censorship here.

Ive waged a frw battles with rod and his qbr charts and have been an adamant admirer of Bakes long before he arrived here. I cant believe there were morons here complaining that the bucs overpaid this past off season for his services and thought the bucs should have drafted a qb. Baker is just getting started people

  29. Gipper Says:

Yes, the new narrative is that Liam Coen is the reason Mayfield excels. Last year it was Canales. Like them both, but neither was around when Baker set the NFL rookie record for TD passes (accomplished in only 13 game) for a really horrible Browns team. Two years later he took the Browns to an 11-5 record and a first round playoff win. Out of fairness to Baker, several of us have felt duty bound to defend him here over the past two seasons. It’s sort of fun to say “we told you so” but the mindless criticism still persists. This in the face of overwhelming statistical evidence to the contrary.

The best when all else has failed is for the same losers to say; “yeah sure, but he is not a Super Bowl QB.” Baker will get the last laugh on this one, as well, just as soon as the Bucs get a NFL quality defense.

  30. Rickrose Says:

Baker is playing like he doesn’t give a DUCK! LDG

  31. BradyGronk Fan Says:

Kento Smith, agree Canales was definitely an upgrade over Leftwhich but the offense was still off. Brady’s last year in 2022 was bad by his standards and 2023 was better but still not very good. Mayfield looked like a decent QB but the running game, OL, and OC weren’t helping much and just slightly better than 2022.

But this year, OL, RBs, and OC are a level or two above which allowed us to see what Mayfield’s ceiling is like.

No comments on the WRs as they’ve always been a team strength from before Brady came.

  32. BradyGronk Fan Says:

For this year,I’d put Mayfield with Mahomes, Allen, Jackson, and Burrow. Maybe Darnold too? It’s quite laughable at all the teams paying 40 million or 50 million for average to bad QBs.

  33. Bartow Buc Says:

Can Baker Mayfield win a Super Bowl for the Buccaneers?? Absolutely he can !!! Will it be this year ? Not sure yet, if we make it to the dance and continue to play well …….
I know everyone is thinking Super Bowl ? What? Where did that come from? This post is about Bakers excellent quarterback play. But, the fact is the Bucs have an explosive offense that can overwhelm and defeat the best teams in the league. And that offense is led by the Bake !!

    You gotta believe!!

Thank you !! To the Brownies who let Baker Mayfield go !!

And thank you to Jason Licht for the absolutely brilliant move of signing Baker Mayfield !!

Go Bucs !! Beat the Saints !!

  34. Ed Says:

When he takes care of the ball and his targets don’t drop it, the Bucs win, period. No turnovers and its bank for Baker and the Bucs.

I really like this offense because he spreads the ball around and opponents don’t know whats coming especially now that Irving has established himself as a running back that at any time can explode. Irving doesn’t drop balls and is a great outlet for Baker.

How about that throw to Evans yesterday on the sidelines, it got there so fast Mike wasn’t ready for it but it was definitely placed in the right spot.

Mayfield’s only weakness right now is that he isn’t as fast as the other scramblers and sometimes he gets reckless when there is pressure. Like some say, he does need to throw the ball away more than he does now.

  35. scholarbrawler22 Says:

All the Traskers have disappeared. I don’t miss them, but I hope they’re still rooting on the Bucs. I hope the Glaziers don’t have to choose between keeping Bowles or losing Coen. That’ll be a tough choice… Go Bucs!

  36. Durango 95 Says:

Is it my turn to say that some of you guys sound like “Baker Bois” or “Liam Coen fan boys”. Not sure I’ve got the hang of this thing yet. To me it looks like you’re just fans of an offense playing at a high level, Maybe I’m just living a really sheltered life. Dunno.

  37. SlyPirate Says:

I wonder if baker holds out for an updated contract?

  38. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

8 months ago Davyboy said by the end of the 2024 season Baker would be doing as good as Mahomes statisticaly. Well, here we are, at the end of the 2024 season and there isn’t one metric that Mahomes leads Baker in. In fact, it is rather embarrassing how far behind he is to Baker. It goes to show you how important it is for a quarterback to be part of a good organization and not the bottom rung type. As long as Baker remains with a class organization he will continue to get better while Mahomes has had access to top shelf since entering the league and will remain pretty much the same. So the question is, how much better will Baker get?
Mahomes has never broken into the 70 percentile for his completion percentage while Baker is sitting at 71.8%. No one other than Drew Brees has ever achieved that high of a passing completion percentage. I thought Baker wasn’t accurate or he threw too hard…
As long as those in charge continue to surround
Baker with quality people there will be a superbowl coming home to Tampa very soon.

  39. Oscar Says:

Most seem to think the credit for signing of Baker goes to Jason Licht. While he obviously had the final say but it was Todd Bowles that badgered Licht to sign Baker. He always liked Baker from the time of the 2018 draft when Bowles was then the HC of the Jets. So kudos to him for recognizing Baker’s talents.

  40. Rod Munch Says:

Good thing about Baker this year is he’s leveled up in terms of consistency. Last year he was the epitome of middling as for every good game he’d have, he’d have at least one bad game, and mostly he was just mediocre. This yeah, he’s putting up more good games than bad games – still, I’d take less top tier games like yesterday if we could just have more above average games without the complete trash games.

Still, he’s made a lot of progress – and he gets a ton of credit for that. Have a good playoff run, don’t end the game by throwing an INT in the biggest moment of his career, and he’ll be well on his way to getting a real big-time contract extension, not the middle extension he got last year. And no, that’s not a backhanded compliment, it’s a real compliment – he’s impressed me this year, even if most of the improvement is from the scheme, he’s doing his part well.

The Baker Boies handle is a derogatory term that bloggers like RodMunch, DavidBigBuc99, and others have used to insult anyone on this website who stood up to them and told them criticism of Mayfield was wrong. These guys have a lot of their little selves invested in proving that they are some sort of football analysts with credibility. Really interesting today ,of all days, these alleged “fans” are nowhere to be found on this website. Kind of know the type. They are misunderstood at work. The boss just doesn’t get their talent and so forth. They aren’t really Bucs fans. The psychology of this is that Baker Mayfield has held his team back just like the boss at work has unfairly held then back from being the big successes they should be.

    Thank You

When I first started this playful experiment and exercise I got very frustrated. I wanted to add something worthwhile. The Joes would know better but it seems like the comments have improved by a lot. Many (too many to mention) on here now post thoughtful well constructed comments. I don’t read every comment but things certainly seem more civil than 2 years ago. I presume these comments are read by others than the fans and the Joes. These comments can be a useful fan survey used by the Bucs organization. The fans now have a voice we didn’t have for many years. We now can be both complimentary and critical but a case should be made for our thoughts. I don’t say much about the players per say because my main focus is on the team and organization as a whole. The Glazers have made great strides and improvements over the years. For that I am thankful. We are so close to being a perennial contender. Some would say we already are but I feel it is still tenuous. I have waited 50 years for a true franchise QB and regular winning seasons. The Bucs don’t get the respect they really deserve yet but we’re close. All we need to do is turn some of the 9-8 and 10-7 seasons into 11-6 and 12-5 or better for a few years. We only need to be consistent. We need to limit the poor performances and play to our abilities with regularity.

  45. Badbucs Says:

Touchdowns per dollar make Baker #1 by a mile. Obviously not a legitimate stat, but he’s a great deal even at 33 mil. He’s a team guy. I hope he gives us the discount for another year and Godwin gives us a break too. Could let Licht build a powerhouse.

  46. stpetebucsfan Says:

A simple truth. If this Buc’s team had either of the Super Bowl defenses they would be a strong SB contender once again.

I fear however that the offense has been a perfect storm of success with a fair portion of luck, especially at QB.

Baker certainly deserved major props. Coen deserves major props and Licht deserves major props. EVERYTHING came together at just the right time and Baker was smart enough to take advantage of a golden opportunity.

GREAT young OL blossoms at just the right time. Not one, not two, but three Buc RB’s turn out to be good. One is borderline great and a game changer.
Otton and all the TE’s have shown good hands and the ability to get open and block and the return of ME13 and McMillan’s blossoming just in time to fill in for injured CG…the Buc’s offense has been on a real roll of luck and it looks like they should be solid for a long time.

  47. Badbucs Says:

The female interviewer stopped to ask that again as she didn’t quite believe what she heard. Brees expanded, “Baker has all the tools to have more production than I’ve had in my career.” The interviewer didn’t believe him but took him at his word.

I guess it takes one to know one. Brees’ opinion is way above what any of us will think.

  57. Citrus County Says:

Just maybe that comment Bowles made at halftime indicates the sleeping giant is about to awaken from his slumber. Nothing would please me more than to see Todd Bowles win a Super Bowl for himself. After what B.A. and Leftwich and to a degree TB12 put him thru that would be a great success. Bowles has indeed kept this team from disintegrating and that is no small accomplishment. Licht and the Glazers deserve credit as well. Bowles’ back is against the wall, it is time to come out swinging.

Stefanski is not a one time coach of the year let alone two, he was Mr Magoo stumbling through previous seasons with the team pulling wins out of their asses despite him and his luck is running out. We are back to classic Browns rebuild in perpetuity mode. I have continued to follow Baker since he left and want nothing more for him, than to hoist his first Lombardi Trophy. I really hope it happens this season! Good luck TB, you guys are my number 1 at this point in the season. Wonder if you guys can take Myles off our hands if you guys make a good playoff run. he was sort of scraping. with a young child, he’s not going anywhere. keep him supported and we are thankful we have a real QB for next 3 years. he’s #6-8 as QBs go and sometimes looks top 5.

No Rod you don’t compliment him. You compliment him and then throw a little shade into the mix to minimize the compliment. And for your limited knowledge about football, all quarterbacks have bad games but you “act” like it’s only Baker calling him inconsistent. He is so “inconsistent” he ranks 4th in the one metric the NFL really cares about, the passer rating. So I’ll take all of his inconsistency. I could go on about your proven lack of football knowledge and talent but it would be wasted time for everybody. I’ll say this Baker has proven you wrong at every turn but you will never admit it and that says it all.

  63. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

And he has done it without his top receivers, which you said was the only reason he was any good in the first place.

  65. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

Let’s not forget that is such a phenomenal stat that only 1 quarterback ever had a higher completion percentage, Drew Brees after 16 years in the league. Out of ALL the quarterbacks none reached such a high mark as Baker but according to you he is inaccurate.

The estrogen is strong with you all. Biggie Smalls said it best ” irritating like the hiccups!” Wonder if Baker knows he has so many girlfriends? The way you all gush over him the average man would think he entered a female chat room

  72. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Better yet you all remind me of that Eminem song “Stan”. How many of you have court orders against you because you weirded out Baker at his home writing him love letters. I lie to you not one of you posted up here a few months ago “I LOVE YOU BAKER!” I was weak!🤣 Wish I had saved his post it was priceless. What you all gonna do when he’s no longer playing??? Find another happy go lucky story like Rudy to latch onto???

  73. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey scholarbrawler22, I am a Trask fan, he is the Buccaneers #2 QB. As long as he is a Buc I am a Trask Fan.

I do not understand the hate for this guy. He was drafted, not his choice where he went. Yet we have many here on JBF who have hatred and voice it toward a Buc player who is QB #2.

I get that he was not able to put himself as the GOAT’s #2 as a rookie, not able to beat out the GOAT’s personal choice to be his backup. {a former first Rd Draft choice} Why all the Trask hate?

I do hope we resign him to a team-friendly contract, to stay. If for nothing else other than to P!is off those “Buc Fans” who have all this hate for him…

GO!!!!! BUCS!!!!! “ALL OF OUR PLAYERS”!!!!!

  74. RustyRhinos Says:

I guess we should have kept Blaine Gabbert as our #2 QB… SMH

  75. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Rusty it’s because they’re Baker fans first and only and Trask almost put their teen idol on the bench so will never forgive him for it, you know the old saying about hell right? It hath no fury like the women of Baker Brigade scorned!

  76. Gipper Says:

    DavidBigBucs99,

Surprised Joe let you back after your racial tirade on Todd Bowles. Where did you get all your charm?

  77. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Stan the Gulper go back to reading Baker’s autobiography

  78. Gipper Says:

    RustyRhinos,

Most here like Trask. He is part of the team. Bucs have had injuries all year. Expect that if Mayfield can’t play, Trask will be ready to compete well.

  79. GoneGator Says:

    Lol @Davidbigboyfan99
What a tool (and lets not forget racist/bigot) you are.

If only we’d get rid of Todd and Baker…. and anoint Liam and Bucky kings of the world….bwahahahah. Bless your little heart 🙂

Dude, there are 32 other teams you can root AGAINST. Pick one. In the meantime, you are an anti-fan to everybody except the angry old bigot club you belong to.

  80. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

Look at the boyfriend react. The point I believe to all this is Munch and littlebucsfan99 have been WRONG and all the name calling won’t make either of you right. Especially calling other fans lice like you have done littlebuc99. You apparently have the mentality of an 8th grade child with all your name calling. Try to grow up and have an argument for once.

  81. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

Maybe that’s why you resort to name calling so fast, you aren’t capable of putting on a legit argument. You sure don’t live in reality.
And what was that racist incident you were involved with? Isn’t hating a quarterback and his fans enough hate for you?

  82. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

Oops our middling qb just won his second offensive player of the week in 3 weeks. Another dagger to munch99

  83. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

    1-Lamar Jackson 121.3
    2-Jared Goff 114.4
    3-Joe Burrow 109.8
    4-Baker Mayfield 107.6
Like it or not munch99, Baker has proven you bois wrong at every turn
    Baker be da man
