Bucs Punt Brutal Punter

December 3rd, 2024

Decisive action.

Yesterday in his day-after presser, Bucs coach Todd Bowles virtually promised the Bucs would bring in punters this week to work out and perhaps join the Bucs. Joe didn’t blame him.

Bowles proved to be a man of his word. Not only will the Bucs work out punters, they will have a new punter this week.

In one of the worst displays Joe has seen from a punter/kickoff specialist/place-kicking holder in one game, the Bucs booted Trenton Gill yesterday. So yes, the Bucs will have a new punter/kickoff specialist/place-kicking holder for the Raiders game on Sunday.

The Bucs booted Gill.

Not only did Gill gag with really poor punting, there was a snap/hold exchange that got fouled up late which caused a Chase McLaughlin field goal attempt to miss its mark.

The icing on the cake was Gill missing the landing zone on a kickoff after a McLaughlin field goal gave the Bucs a 20-13 lead with just over three minutes left in the game, which gave the Stinking Panthers the ball on their own 40-yard line. This could have been lethal given the stakes that were involved with the Bucs and their playoff chances.

The Bucs would have been better off with Turner Gill.

Joe was so outraged about Gill’s gagging that he took to Twitter Sunday night and called for the Bucs to just give Gill $500 and tell him he had to fly home commercial and the Bucs would ship his items from his locker room at One Buc Palace to his residence and make sure to deactivate his One Buc Palace keycard.

Sounds like the Bucs did just that, though they let Gill ride home on the team flight.

Good, wish we could get the Browns punter! He was great tonight! Still surprised they dumped Camarda–he was so good his 1st year.

what is wrong with jake blotarda…get the fiend cleaned up and back in the building…am i right or am i right ?

  3. unbelievable Says:

Punter- the one position that gets held accountable for poor play.

    LOL Good point!

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Didn’t they release our good punter to keep him before?

  6. garro Says:

Mystery man Camarda was seen hanging around outside One Buc? Just kiddng…sort of…. Just one of the mysterious happenings over the years here in Buc land.

I remember seeing Leon Lett run the wrong way (Jim Marshall too) but outside of that, this guy had one of the most absurd games I have ever seen!

Camarda was a field position weapon and suddenly??? Crickets…

    Go Bucs!

    Go Bucs!

  7. adam from ny Says:

resign camarda if he’s worked his way thru any issues…

    he was a great punter………not good………great…

straighten him out and he’s potentially good for a solid 5-10 years

  8. Leopold Stotch Says:

I really don’t think Camarda cares. I could be wrong, but he just may be the “I’m good at football, so I play it for money” and not the “I love football and I can make money off it” guy now. From the social media I saw of him, he seemed focused on doing stuff for churche. He’s made a bunch of money, wona title with Georgia, married, he may be fine with where he’s at. To each their own. I’d love for him to come back and be great again, but that’s out of everyone’s hands except him.

  9. heyjude Says:

Wow, they were fast on this one too. They must have already prepared to do this pending Gill’s performance in the game. Can’t wait to hear what they are planning now.

I was texting a friend after watching Bowles Monday press conference, and I noted that it was one of the more candid conferences I’ve seen Bowles with that particular question where he doesn’t just give us coach-speak, in his own way he was almost animated when the talk of a punter came up. You just knew Gill had kicked his last football with us.

What I don’t understand is, what took so long? There was literally nothing special about Gill. He didn’t have a huge booming leg to flip the field, he didn’t seem like he had a great touch during the punt or kick-off showing him adaptive to the new kicking rules. He was simply a JAG.

  11. rrsrqnc Says:

Good one Joe, Turner Gill, many won’t know who you are talking about

  12. George R Says:

Joe, What is the story with Jake. Did we ever get a article on him?

  13. orlbucfan Says:

Carmarda found the lord and has changed his life. Yeah, it’s a shame but if he’s in a happier place mentally, I wish him good luck. He was a great punter, but he had other priorities in his life. Pro football is sports entertainment. Jake had other interests. It happens. Fingers and toes are x’ed that Bowles/Licht find a competent replacement. And as far as Vegas/gambling/throwing games goes, a big loud SNORT is in order. Go Bucs, even if you are the walking wounded!!

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jake Camarda averaged 50+ over his 3 year career. I didn’t think he was doing bad at all. This year, in 5 games, he averaged 45+ yards on 13 punts.

When they released him, I was 100% surprised. I figured maybe there was something behind closed doors that led to is, like maybe he told them he wanted to quit football.

He’s only 25 years old right now…could punt another 15 years if them spend the time on him.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Maybe he had an injury or personal health crisis.

  16. Swanee22 Says:

Mark Royals would return and can still out kick anyone on practice squad or free agent. GM needs to make the phone call.

  17. yucboy Says:

    Bring back Camarda

  18. bucsfan951 Says:

I feel bad for McLaughlin. This will be placeholder #3 this season.

  19. Cobraboy Says:

It is rare to see any player go from the pinnacle of success to bounced from the league in such a short time as we saw with Carmada.

Finding the Lord does not mean you start missing the sweet spot on the drop.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

Don’t address the complete trash at LB behind David – but let’s make sure we roll through punters.

  21. Rod Munch Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai – agreed. Has to be something we don’t know about, because the move made no sense as Jake was outpunting this goober Gill.

Also Gill has sucked all year, why in the world did they decide to choose him and not bring in a legit option if they were hell bent on getting rid of Jake?

  22. unbelievable Says:

^ He was averaging about 3 yards more on his punts compared to Gill, that’s it.

BUT – opposing teams were averaging higher returns on Camarda’s punts vs Gill’s. IMO that’s because our coverage teams are garbage, but the net avg was apparently more important than the avg.

  23. Cobraboy Says:

Carmada was hitting line drives, return balls. Before, he hit “rain balls.”

PLUS, a punter or KO guy should never put a ball between the hashes. They need to take away one side of a return. Carmada was launching return balls to the middle of the field.

    Something changed.

  24. MelvinJunior Says:

Why has no one held the Bucs ‘accountable’ by asking and demanding an ANSWER to the Camarda ordeal!? We should at least get that from them. I mean, WHAT did he do!? Cause, even though, he wasn’t up to ‘his’ standards, he was STILL much better than this Gill dude, & with so much more upside, & etc.

  25. James Says:

If Camarda was so good, why hasn’t anyone picked him up? It sounds like he doesn’t want to continue with his career or something else.

  26. Robert Says:

Should never have cut Jake. He was in a slump but when he was on, good God he was great. A game changer. Flipped the field position many times .

  27. Drunkinybor Says:

    Jake please cone back hahahaha

  28. Drunkinybor Says:

Seriously though..the place holder and kicker need chemistry and Jake has held for Chase.
