Bucs Just Punched The Chargers In The Mouth

December 15th, 2024

Super effort.

So Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers, wearing their Powerpuff blue uniforms (Joe loves them), want to play big boy football with the NFL. Old school Big Ten. Smashmouth.

Well, the Chargers just met the new bully on the block.

The Bucs came into avocado-eating, wine-sipping, Lipstick City Los Angeles and not just punched the Chargers in the mouth, they stomped on their head for s(p)its and giggles and tossed their lunch money in the general direction of one of the many homeless colonies in the area.

When have the Bucs last had an impressive win as this? The Chargers looked to be a playoff team.

They like to play physical ball and when needed, their star quarterback will like up a defense. The Bucs just kicked their tails with the Chargers’ own formula.

And the Bucs, with their 40 points, more than doubled the average points the Chargers allow per game.

You want physical ball? There was Lavonte David, as usual, all over the field, with 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a tackle for loss, three quarterback hits and a tackle of Chargers receiver Ladd McKonkey that otherwise had seven points written all over it.

You want to run? The Bucs had their lightning and thunder, Bucky Irving and Rachaad White.

You want the dagger? The Bucs woke up Sunday and realized they still had the best offensive player in franchise history healthy. Mike Evans is him.

Evans blew up the Chargers today. His 35-yard touchdown catch off a bullet from Baker Mayfield, man, Joe could just hear Gene Deckerhoff hollering, “Is that a dagger?”

Was Mayfield perfect? No, but he sure threw a perfect pass to Evans in the third quarter that shook up the NFL, if anyone was paying attention.

This game, today’s game, in Los Angeles, was the most impressive win of the season. More so than the win at Detroit in Joe’s mind. The Bucs were pretty close to full strength at Detroit. The Bucs today were pulling dudes off of couches to play safety and didn’t have Chris Godwin.

This was as impressive a win as Joe has seen from the Bucs in a couple of years, certainly not since Bucco Bruce Arians was around.

Every Bucs fan deserves to be wildly hungover tomorrow!

Merry effing Christmas!

Watching the game live, it certainly seemed like Bowles played his awful super soft zone nearly the entire first half, before finally switching to an aggressive scheme in the 2nd half, and we saw the results – it was a completely difference defense. It’s hard to really track that stuff live when you’re just trying to enjoy the game, but it will be interesting to go back and look and see if the play calling changed, or if it was just more effective in the 2nd half (I’m pretty certain it changed).

But man, if Bowles will just stop with the super soft zone all the time, be aggressive, and you get a good week from Baker, this team is very dangerous. Very very dangerous.

  2. Tee in NC Says:

Fantastic win. Props to Coach Bowles on adjustments in the 2nd half. Defense stood up in 2nd half.

  3. CallTheSaltTruck Says:

Hey, remember when sportswriters ‘couldn’t find 8 solid wins’ for this season?

Everyone who just picked up 2 grand on the 7.5 over/under line on the Bucs, raise the roof! Easy freaking money. Keep rolling Bucs. Next stop is the 3-1 odds I got on winning the Divsion. Thanks to all the doubters for lining my pockets!
    Bravo!–Joe

  4. Peter Says:

Coach deserves credit for putting together a spare parts defense

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    No punts…that speaks volumes…

  6. Les Says:

Damn ! Most compleat game of the year ! 2nd. Half was outstanding !! And we’re beat up . Congrats to the bucs !!

  7. Leighroy Says:

Here here! It’s the 4th quality win of the season against a playoff team. Bowles found a way in the 2nd half to adjust and shutdown Herbert, credit to him.

If I’m not mistaken I think I saw Jamel Dean get an interception today?! 😃

  8. Zzbucs Says:

And let me add Bowles outcoached Harbaugh….

Is it my imagination or did we escape without a major injury?

Wow, I wonder remember anything… Could that be the first time all season no one from the Bucs went to the tent?

  11. Hodad Says:

Helps your defense when your offense dominates. That’s what they did today, dominated. Not easy putting 40 up on anyone in the league. Makes playing defense fun.

  12. Vinny from NYC Says:

I love reading the open thread and wondering what game people are watching. Some of the guys would be dangerous if they ever figure out the game is 60 minutes long.

    _____________–
White was able to come back so yes no actual injuries seemed to happen.

  14. D-Rok Says:

For all the naysayers (myself included) Bowles just earned himself another year as HC for the Bucs. This team was on fire the 2nd half, and I’m stoked to see it.

    It was a great game.

  15. OHBucFan Says:

Leighroy beat me to it. Some love for Dean. Been a long time.
Great team win and beat a solid team win the way they’d want to win.
Todd Bowles: Lots of credit my man! Enjoy the flight home.
Extra day off for the boys before they play the Boys? I think that’s been working.

  16. Razorramone Says:

    Jeff? Jeff? Crickets.

  17. Ds Says:

Bowles had Herbert in blitz h*ll

  18. BucfaninMi Says:

First half looked dicey, third quarter they hit their stride and just took over! Nice to see ME13 have a big day, they needed that.

  19. Bartow Buc Says:

Hey Joe!! Yes, I agree this is a Huge Win for Coach Bowles !! I’m telling everyone right now, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers DEFENSE kicked the Chargers Butt tonight in Los Angeles, 2,100 miles from Tampa !!!

The Bucs EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE also lit up the Chargers 40-17 !! Did you see Baker out there directing traffic, throwing touchdown passes, and running the ball for first downs ? Irving and White were bulldozers ! Running the ball very successfully throughout the game !!

  20. DBS Says:

I was amazed Bowles on the final drive at the end of the second quarter put all the players for the blitz on the line. Herbert didnt know what the hell to do and it worked. I was sure In the second half he would go away from it because that worked. Credit to him for staying with it. Now keep that pressure on every offense and we we will be in great shape.

  21. Bartow Buc Says:

Go Bucs !! Beat the Cowboys!!

HMMMMM ! That does make one wonder, doesn’t it ?

  23. Lightningvinny Says:

One at a time ,,,,, can’t get to 11-6!without a win over cowboys

  24. firethecannons Says:

It was a wonderful Christmas present! The Bucs were fantastic! Defense was impressive even though we were depleted. Offense was on fire, lets keep this team intact!Pay Liam coen with an offer he cannot refuse.

  25. Mark Says:

Well, I guess we now know who has it better than them!!

  26. Ozzie the sports junkie Says:

BIG TIME win and a call
Out to the NFC post season
Hopefuls ..”We ain’t done yet!! We still getting better and we beat the best allready .. it was obvious the second half the Buccaneers far out man number one defense in the NFL Chargers. Close until halftime, the better team the bigger team the more talented team pulled away and one going away can’t help it Harken back to 2020 when the bucks were winning 31-28 and the cries of maybe next year with some new pieces on defense and then the defense came alive the final four games of the regular season a trifecta that will not soon be repeated of Drew Brees Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes all three down Tom Brady led the way in, scored the points offensively, the defense drove the Machine that picked up the first home Super Bowl win I won’t go there yet with this team. I have thoughts three games left can’t overlook Dallas Carolina or New Orleans. We’re in the conversation Bucs fans ! Viva la JoeBucsFan
    !!

  27. Bartow Buc Says:

Bucs Defense kicked butt tonight in Los Angeles, 2100 miles from home !! Bucs offense exploded on the Chargers 40-17 !!

So many offensive stars tonight !! What a show by Mayfield, Evans, McMillan, Orton, White, Irving, Tucker, and others !!

    Very Proud of our Buccaneers!!

Go Bucs !! Beat the Cowboys!!

  28. FortMyersDave Says:

Props to everyone who put some coin down o the Bucs over 7.5 wins! I wonder if some of the media pundits who were adamant the Bucs would lose double digit games this season will acknowledge they underestimated the Bucs and probably overestimated the ATL. I still wish the Bucs beat the ATL, at least on the road but that is water under the bridge even though that additional win would help lock up the division and perhaps the #3 seed if the Bucs hold it together and get to 10 or 11 wins.

  29. Lightningvinny Says:

Who at halftime said Bowles is going to out adjust Harbough,,, not me

  30. FortMyersDave Says:

I am with you on that Ligtningvinny. Amazing that Bowles outcoached a Harbaugh and made key adjustments. In the second half everyone on brought their A game. Let’s hope they can repeat the feat in Dallas!

  31. JReel Buc Says:

    Fire Bowles !!!

  32. adam from ny Says:

one hell of a win over those san diego super chargers !

  33. adam from ny Says:

yeah, the team looked very dangerous today…

midway thru the 2nd half i started thinking from the way we looked, that our real competition in the nfc are detroit and philly…

detroit is detroit…and philly just quietly keeps on winning and winning…

if we leveled up and this is how we can look week in and week out, we could be the 3rd best squad in the conference…

granted some might mention minn and gb…

    but…dam…we looked good today !

  34. adam from ny Says:

i was thinking we are gonna pick one off herbert today…

all this talk all week, about his 1 int, and how he protects the foozball…haha

i was vibing we’ll get one with his injured ankle and maybe not setting his feet right before some throws…

and who gets it….the one and only jamel deeeeeaaaannn !! 🙂

  35. JohnBoy Says:

As a fan, I find it deeply satisfying when they know are running the ball, and you still stuff it for 5-7 yards.

    This is a great offense.

Just need the pass D to be sorta average.

  36. Itzok Says:

Shocked by how they destroyed the chargers. Herbert looked bad and was missing throws all over the place. Great second half defense

  37. Ex-Browns02 Says:

I think that the greatest thing about today’s game is that none of us really expected what happened after half time. The change in momentum was a gift from our defense with the stop on the Chargers first possession. I know that it made me think that a whole new game was starting!

Keep that momentum going Bucs! Now you get the opportunity to give “America’s Team” a nice prime-time scorching next week!!!
