Bucky Irving On Pace For 1,037 Yards Rushing & A Bucs Record

December 1st, 2024

Some easily could argue that Bucky Irving is on pace for the greatest season ever by a Buccaneers running back.

Yeah, it’s been that good.

Rookie Irving was a monster today in the breakout game of his career against Carolina — 25 carries for 152 yards and his 6th rushing touchdown of the season.

Irving is averaging 5.5 yards per carry. That’s 732 yards on 133 carries with 5 games remaining.

If that continues, Irving will finish with the best yards-per-carry average in a Buccaneers season by a full-time running back.

Yes, Irving would have a more efficient rushing season than any delivered by Doug Martin, James Wilder, Warrick Dunn, LeGarrette Blount and more.

During the Bucs’ last Super Bowl season, Ronald Jones ran for 5.1 yards per carry, which was a new high in a Tampa Bay season.

Jones also had 7 touchdowns on the ground in 2020. Leonard “Playoff Lenny” Fournette got the headlines, but RoJo carried most of the mail.

Irving has been better than all those guys, all those special seasons.

Oh, and Irving also leads the NFL in catch percentage, hauling in 95 percent of the balls thrown his way. That includes three receptions today for 33 yards.

At 8.1 yards per catch, Irving has been better than Rachaad White as a receiver this season. And Irving is on pace for 50 catches.

Enjoy it, folks. Joe sure is.

And pray Irving’s hip is ok.

The kid is CLEARLY better out of the backfield than White. His vision & decision-making is All-World. He makes the first guy miss every time, unless the defender meets him at the QB. He took the game over on the Bucs’ last two scoring drives in regulation. When was the last time White took a game over? In Germany, maybe? Spell Bucky with White & Tucker but, he needs to be the featured back. It seems obvious!

  2. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Great win today. I was thinking we should be ashamed because of the barely winning vs the Kittens, but we won the game the way were supposed to! FINNISHED!

  3. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I’d freaking Luv to see Bucky Irvin break our single-season rushing record, too.

    1. Doug Martin (2012): 1,454 yards
    2. Doug Martin (2015): 1,402 yards
    3. James Wilder (1985): 1,300 yards

  4. Tbbucs3 Says:

Can we stop discrediting White just because Bucky is really good??

They both feature their own unique skill sets and Bucky isnt ready to be an every down back.

The Bucs rushing attack is best when BOTH Bucky and Rachaad White are getting touches

  5. David Says:

He has been so good. Even when there’s nothing he’s able to allude and shoot forward for 45 yards. White just simply doesn’t have that ability. White is good on the outside as a receiver and blocking.

I don’t know why they’re not using Tucker more unless they’re trying to get white just enough to showcase for a trade. Maybe they can get a 4th or 5th rounder?

Either way, Bucky is the future, and he has been the steal of the draft.
Should be third behind Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels for rookie of the year at this point.

  6. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Bucky has been impressing me more and more. Hope his smaller frame can hold up. He lacks elite speed or else he’d have numbers like Barkley, but he makes guys miss and runs with great vision.
I know Rachaad White gets a lot of the on here but he has also had a really good season and has improved overall as a RB imo. I’m glad to have them both… Now stop it with the kick return nonsense.

  7. Billyboy Says:

Why did they take him out we almost lost because of that

  8. #1bucsfan Says:

I like both backs. Bucky had some nice blocks today to. He’s getting better. I’m still a white fan especially when he catches the ball. White makes people miss too out in space. Bucky is a beast. Glad we got both. We gunne need em. And will need Tucker too. Injuries happened. RBs take a beating and there’s a lot of games.

Absolutely, White had 6.9 ypc today and had a huge run in OT to set up the chip shot FG win.
Stop the White bashing and just be grateful we have two great backs

  10. David Says:

    Billy boy
They wrapped him with ice on his hip. Not sure what the injury is, but hopefully nothing significant.

But they are already invested in their fake news agenda, that White sucks and can’t run the football, and the only reason the Bucs didn’t lead the NFL in rushing was because of White. If they suddenly admit that scheme and blocking matters and White was never the issue, it would shatter their belief system.

  13. Mac Says:

White was terrible the first few games. Once Bucky got involved in the offense White got better. I think it motivates White knowing Bucky is right there to take his job something White never had. That with also an improved O line better scheme and the fact that White isn’t playing 90+% of the offensive snaps has all helped Whites numbers improve.

  14. Pewter Power Says:

He would have had the best statistical rookie record if the head coach wasn’t so slow and stubborn. The only thing different Bucky did today was start

  15. Cleanhouse Says:

    Fire Bowles

  16. Itzok Says:

White is not a good running back. Anyone with eyes can see Bucky is more talented. White should get 5 no more than 10 snaps a game.

This isn’t little league where everyone plays. Put the best players on the field. Honestly Tucker should get more touches than White

  17. David Says:

    Pewter Power

White is a known entity blocking and receiving. No way they were gonna have Bucky carry the load. He runs tough but he’s not that big. I think it’s great that they’re splitting time. Having one back as a workhorse is completely unnecessary

  18. Usfbuc Says:

Bucky does appear to be the better RB but White has clearly improved this season too. Watching the two, Bucky is more creative and seems to have a better feel for what is going to happen at the LoS, and White is more disciplined and hits the hole he is told to hit. Once in space both have the ability to make people miss but Bucky seems more explosive.

  19. dmatt Says:

Bowles is stubborn n didn’t give Bucky the starting job several weeks ago because he’s a rookie. Coaches such as BA, Bellichick, Harbaugh brothers, Sean Peyton would’ve had Bucky starting at the beginning of the season. Bucky should not be on the kickoff team. That is where his injury started. Why would u put ur playmaker on the starting rb, who’s a game changer on the ko team where the risk of injury is very high. We should make a trade with RWhite to get a third rd next year to stack up on defense. Let’s be done with JDean, he’s a slow to react dud.

  20. Dave Pear Says:

Let’s be glad we haszn a coich like Bodd Towles, who is desperate to be unpredictable. Pretty soon Gill the punter will be in the backfield, and Skule will be dropping in deep middle zone coverage.

It’s genius to keep Bucky on the bench in critical situations. I don’t know why, but Bodd does. Just ask him.

  21. Drunkinybor Says:

He looks better than Cadillac to me. I loved him coming out of college. His toughness surprised me. This dude can be reallyvreally special. I forsee many many many crazy highlights of Bucky sweetfeet

  22. heyjude Says:

So true, “Bucky was a monster today.” He amazes me weekly. Hope his hip turns out to be okay.

  23. bob in valrico Says:

Bucky had a great game in both the run and passing game. He also showed
improvement in protection. That said, Bucky needs be to protected better by coaching staff, He had a lot of successive plays in the second half and probably sustained some bruised ribs in the process. His availability is critical to the Bucs success.
Better mixing up the way our backs are used will protect an important piece of our offense. White has quietly shown what he can do behind this rebuilt O line.
His 38 yard run set up the win. In spite of that, negative Joe grudgingly gave him a back handed complement for his efforts. He has unselfishly done what is
is asked of him with a lot his snaps utilizing him as a extra blocker to help
    protect Baker.

  24. Adam’s Angry Says:

Gosh. Imagine what his rushing totals would be if the Bucs actually USED him!!

  25. Larrd Says:

Bucky is great but small and banged up. It is best to use all three backs!

  26. BuckyBuc Says:

    He’s got the “IT” factor.

  27. unbelievable Says:

Bucky is playing through injury. Some of you idiots just want to run him into the ground and end his career early a la Cadillac Williams. He’s a fantastic running back but we need him for the long haul.

It’s also funny how YPC was constantly mentioned when Rachaad White was struggling, but then every game he has higher YPC than Bucky does, like yesterday, there’s never a peep about it. It’s almost like some people have an agenda…

  28. orlbucfan Says:

Bucky won’t get that record if he’s got a hip pointer. Those suckers HURT. I’m fed up with the White bashing, too. White and Irving complement each other. Coen needs to get it through his fat head. And where were the QB rollouts and bootleg options, Coen? You gonna finally call them now that BM is injured? Baker is a natural fit for those kind of plays. I don’t know about Trask cos I really haven’t seen/heard him play.
