“Baker’s Crazy Enough”

December 16th, 2024

How about a Buccaneers-Lions NFC Championship game?

One NFL analyst thinks it’s a distinct possibility, and no, it’s not Bucs homer and NFL Network personality Gerald McCoy.

Joe enjoys The Richard Sherman Podcast because Sherman keeps it real, talks fast and has great knowledge and perspective of the league. It helps that he’s studying game film every week in his role for Amazon.

Speaking last night, Sherman didn’t hide how impressed he was by the Bucs’ hammering of the Chargers 40-17 yesterday.

A defense guy and a potential Hall of Fame cornerback, one who played for the Bucs under Todd Bowles (2021), Sherman seemed most impressed by Baker Mayfield. That surprised Joe after the Bucs defense shut out the Chargers in the second half and beat up QB Justin Herbert.

“Baker was out there cheffing up and he cheffed up that Chargers defense that, like I said, has been playing some of their best football,” Sherman said. “… Very efficient, 22 of 27. What are we going to do if Baker Mayfield messes around and gets this Tampa Bay team hot and rollin’ into the playoffs and they make some noise in the playoffs and we see them in a NFC Championship matchup against the Lions? … Could that happen? I’m going to say it here. … Because the way they’re playing right now, they can get that done.

“Baker’s crazy enough to go into these games, the gunslinger he is.”

Sherman went on to talk about the exotic looks Todd Bowles’ defenses can use against any team and rattle any quarterback, or at least surprise them.

Per Sherman, the Bucs have enough playmakers on defense to do enough to be dangerous with their high-octane offfense. Yeah, he took a shot at his former Bucs teammate Jamel Dean for finally getting an interception yesterday.

Mayfield? He was Sherman’s player of the week, even against other big-time performers across the NFL.

Bucs hit the jackpot when they signed Baker and did it again with Liam Coen. No matter what happens this season the Bucs cannot let Liam Coen leave this organization.

  2. Bucsfan Says:

Lions are beatable, especially by Tampa.

  3. Jack Sparrow Says:

Lets Go BUCS!! Great win last night. Next few games, Bucs should start stepping up their game in a get ready playoff mode. Learn from the mistakes and highlights the things that worked great.

  4. A Bucs Fan Says:

The Lions lost their best interior player Mcneil to a knee injury and CDIII to a broken jaw for the remainder of the season. Not sure they will make it to the conference game.

  5. SB~LV Says:

Baker played better after burning out the adrenaline after those long runs , at least one was called back.
Point I am making is that maybe Baker is too hyped up early in games

  6. Gipper Says:

Agree with Sherman. Baker is the best “middling, journeyman” Top 5 QB in the league who we learned from none other than RodMuncher who can’t throw long. Unless you ignore the perfect 50 yard strike to ME yesterday.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Hold on….we still have work to do…

  8. NJbucs23 Says:

I just want the eagles so damn bad.

  9. Itzok Says:

Josh Allen may be up for player of the week, but baker balled out

  10. Bucs And Them Says:

Bucs & Lions could very well end up in the NFC championship game. I really like that Lions team and their coach Dan Campbell. What’s not to like? I also like the Bucs chances if that game happens. But, I personally think it would be the most gratifying if the Bucs could get to NFC championship against the Eagles in Philly. Imagine if we beat them there to get to the Super Bowl! The Eagle fan misery would be absolutely deeelicious! I have a dream! Go Bucs!!!!!

  11. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Tbbf. Exactly.

Hope we don’t get articles this week about a cakewalk in Big D.

True that, and Baker is in great company!

  13. Yankeevatnik Says:

I’ve been a life long Browns fan and what they did with Baker was a travesty. I remember fighting with fans telling me Watsons way better and dude was a sex offender. The Browns almost beat the chiefs in the playoffs. I’m sickened but I’m happy for Baker wish he was still a Brown but they figured can’t loses games if you have a good qb so had to move on

  14. Licht4President Says:

That podcast link ain’t right, haha. It’s a white dude on Twitter named Richard Sherman

  15. RVATom Says:

    Licht4…that’s funny. I’m sure they’ll fix it 🤣

  16. Buddha Says:

Don’t fall asleep on the Packers. They are playing really well.

  17. Gipper Says:

We won’t hear from RodMunch or his best buddy DavidBigBucsFan99, until Baker throws another INT, loses a fumble or has a pass batted down. These guys always get very, very quiet after every Mayfield spectacular success.

  18. BallHawk75 Says:

Pump the breaks. We won a big game yesterday, we aren’t even in the playoffs yet.

This same team lost to the moribund Falcons twice.

The Lions got pounded out and still put up 42 on a solid defense.

We have a super soft schedule except the Chargers since the bye.

Just because you shoot Jessie James, that doesn’t make you Jessie James.

No playoff talk until we actually make the playoffs.

  19. JK Says:

^^^^playoff talk, playoff talk, playoff talk, playoff talk, playoff talk,, playoff talk…………..then you can tell us how they have no chance in the…………playoffs

    LFG!!!

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We can only hope Liam is committed to Mayfield and doesn’t leave.

  21. Saskbucs Says:

Lions are more beat up than us with injuries. Kinda too bad as I find them a likeable squad. If it’s not our Bucs coming outta the NFC, I would want it to be the Lions.

This team can play with anyone in the league. Gotta get healthy and gotta keep stacking 60 minute efforts. No team in the NFL, let alone the NFC, scares me. Only thing that scares me when it comes to important games vs top teams is Bowles conservative nature and clock management.

  22. Chief Says:

This team is dangerous for sure. But none of it matters if we don’t take care of business the next 3 weeks.
Baker is balling. Mike seems finally near 100%. The run game is constantly paying dividends. The defense can only get better as they get healthy.

All the ingredients are there to make a deep run IF, and I mean IF, we take care of the next 3 games.

  23. The Truth be Told Says:

I said it since the day he signed here. A match made in Heaven. How can you not love Baker Mayfield? He is a Gritty Tough SOB that fell into our laps. Go Bucs!!

  24. Larrd Says:

With Baker and the budding OL I am not as concerned about losing the OC. Plus, Bowles can pick them pretty well.

If the defense continues to tighten the Bucs can contend. They have already beaten the Lions and Eagles.

  25. BoricuaBucFan Says:

I’m getting sick of all of these stupid advertisements every time I click on an article.

  26. StickinUp4Centers Says:

“Sherman went on to talk about the exotic looks Todd Bowles’ defenses can use against any team and rattle any quarterback”

    Except Kirk Cousins 🙁

  27. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

The gunslinger in Baker is probably why he let loose with those bombs yesterday and we’ll probably see more as long as Evans is healthy. Baker’s been chompin at the bit to let loose the Kraaken!

  28. scholarbrawler22 Says:

I agree to pump the breaks, but I noticed a Baker Hater on this site switch his hate from Baker to “the fans Baker brought with him” today. Ha, ha, ha!

  29. orlbucfan Says:

Is Aidan Richardson (sp) still on IR? Bucs against Detroit in the NFC Championship? Some people on here are nuts. Bucs still have 3 more games. They are still the walking wounded especially on D. It looks like the Offense is doing the work carrying the team. The OLine is jelling. ME13 has figured out how to heal that hammy. He’s probably also thinking of his bud, CG14.

Hutchinson is out for the year….the leg snapped in 2 places and was loose if you didn’t see. He has as much a chance of coming back as Godwin, which is slim to none.

  31. Bucballer Says:

The game against the chargers was the most complete game I’ve seen this season, where has that defense been all year? And Mayfield is a beast baller! He is fun to watch. If they play the rest of the season like they played against the chargers, look out, it’s gonna be exciting to watch!!! One game at a time!
