Baker Mayfield: Turnover Machine & Thrill Ride

December 8th, 2024

Joe will dare say that Baker Mayfield is looking like a winner version of Jameis Winston in recent weeks, including today.

It’s been a roller coaster experience, an Iron Gwazi ride 20 minutes south of Busch Gardens.

Two more interceptions for Mayfield today came against the bumbling Raiders, and they can’t be blamed on receivers. Mayfield has 13 picks this season, which is three more than his 2023 total, and he’s throwing less per game — and going deep less.

Mayfield also has 28 touchdown passes after three more today: two sent to Jalen McMillian and one to Rachaad White. That’s as many as Mayfield had last year and it ties his career high with four games to play.

The Bucs’ franchise quarterback also made a huge throw to Mike Evans in the fourth quarter on a huge third-down play, a laser in crunch time.

Mayfield was unhappy after the game about his interceptions and a lost fumble. Todd Bowles mentioned the fumble, too. But that’s the beauty of this wacky Bucs team. They’re in first place at 7-6 with a dangerous offense — and they have lots of potential improvement on the table.

Joe’s not worried about Mayfield. He was a stud in the playoffs last season, and Joe expects that will happen again.

I’m a baker fan but this is why I don’t think he’s an elite QB. Took to many sacks when he could throw the ball away and then the terrible ints. One was a really good play on the screen by the defender but man baker channels his inner Winston ways. I don’t find it thrilling lol

  2. Bojim Says:

Still the toughest QB in the league.

  3. RamblingRhino Says:

We should just fire our HC. Another Win against a loosing NFL Team.. He made to many dumb mistakes, Defense played like crazy, We could be way better with a new HC…..

Oh, and at 7-6 The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in First place by ourselves in the NFC South… We definitely gotta have a new HC….

Great Game HC Bowles. Great Game OC Coen…
    Next team up…

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  4. Dewey Selmon Says:

His safety blanket in Godwin is gone.

  5. BucU Says:

    Very good point Dewey Selmon.

  6. David S Pear Says:

I’m a big Baler fan. He’s doing everything to show why he can’t win a championship. That was horrid.

  7. ghost Says:

divisional loss is the ceiling, missing the playoffs and getting a mid round pick is the floor

  8. Mac Says:

I am not getting ahead of myself here but IF and big IF thr Bucs make the playoffs what are chances Godwin returns? I remember reading weeks ago he was aiming to be back for playoffs. Is that still a thing or is he 100% shut down for thr season? Even at 70% Godwin can really help this offense.

  9. BuxfaninTX Says:

Just imagine if you removed the name Baker and replaced it with the name Jaemis…..just sayin….

  10. GoneGator Says:

Im a huge Baker fan BUT he’s got to get better at throw the friggin ball away. Live to see another play.

Many of our sacks and picks sure looked like they were on Baker.

  11. Winny Testaverde Says:

    I like Baker…but he’s become a bit of a “Mini-Winny” with the multiple turnovers…oftentimes due to unforced errors/carelessness.

Excellent win. When The Bucs didn’t bury them early…due to Baker’s botches…it got a little squirrelly until the very end.

  12. Bee Says:

    LMAO

Joe’s not worried about Baker, he was a stud in the playoffs last year.

Um, Joe, what about the last pass Baker threw in the playoffs last season? Was that studlike? Lol…looking at Baker play today it seems he’s in playoff form.

Smh…the outright delusion and glazing from media and fans is unreal.

  13. orlbucfan Says:

He’s got a buzz on that if he sits cos he’s hurt, he jeopardizes his position. What a joke! He got a huge raise in the off-season. He plays hurt/stupid, is that helping the team? No, it’s not. Bucs are following the same pattern as last year. BM could actually help them win all their remaining games by using his brain. I don’t care who the QB is, I simply want my team to win. I know they are good enuff.

  14. Frank Pillow Says:

Baker has been bad…really bad…two weeks straight. Maybe he’s dealing with a bigger injury than we’re aware of, but the scrambled egg-brained decisions are far more concerning

  15. Chad Says:

Bee baker had 350 yards passing and 3 touchdowns in the playoffs against the lions, yeah his last throw was a pick but defense let the lions score on every possession after halftime, which put the Bucs in obvious passing situations that didn’t help anything. Baker has to play smarter and be better with the ball but I have faith they will figure it out and do better has a whole. Defense has to get healthy and play well for the Bucs to have a chance in the playoffs

  16. Chad Says:

Frank pillow, baker only made one dumb ass throw and that was the pick in the end zone, the first pick was just a super smart play by the defensive player, initially he was going to blitz but read the screen play

  17. Bee Says:

    Chad

That’s right, it’s everybody’s fault but Baker’s. He threw the pick on the 3rd play of the drive in the middle of the field on the Bucs side of the field. But yes, blame the defense.

  18. stpetebucsfan Says:

I agree that he needs to learn to throw the ball away and live for the next play.

Having said that in fairness today’s struggles could also be blamed on Chris Godwin’s absence and the “judicious” use of ME13. He certainly produced and the Bucs got some play from McMillan, Shep and Otton but Baker was clearly holding the ball too long.

Perhaps guys weren’t getting open. The RAider DL did a good job of jamming passing lanes and tipping balls when possible.

It’s the freaking NFL not the NCAA. It’s not normal for teams to simply stomp another team. The Bucs are exactly where they should be, with the rest of the middle of the pack teams.

There are only a few teams that are that powerful and KC hasn’t been stomping out opponents and Buffalo may be on their way to a lose.

FACT CHECK: Your Tampa Bay Bucs are in FIRST PLACE in DECEMBER!
They’ve not only stopped the bleeding of a four game losing streak they are now on a three game win streak! Do they have a million questions? Yep.

Health is horrible, and now the depth is beyond thin, it’s becoming invisible.

There is a positive though. The Bucs are finding some gems among the kiddie corps forced into action as next man up.

  19. TheShaz Says:

I’m giving baker a break, he is a gunslinger.

As much as I love Mike Evans, he is no where near 100%. As as someone else pointed out, Godwin was Baker’s prime target. He’s out and Mike is playing hurt.

So Baker is dealing with a revolving door at receiver and running back.

With the injury bug feasting on this team at the moment. Baker’s doing OK.

Liam Coen IMHO deserves a lot of credit and I fear we may not have him around for long.

  20. Gipper Says:

You girls need something else to whine about. Mayfield’s first INT was a giant nothingburger. Bucs got the ball right back in the same field position after a Raiders fumble on the very first play after the INT. Mayfield was mauled on the ball he fumbled. He got smashed by three defenders. The second INT killed a drive and was a dumb throw. Actually think he was trying to throw the ball away but couldn’t get enough on the ball due to ferocious pass rush. No QB or Coach likes turnovers. Today was a combination of good pass coverage and poor pass protection. Mayfield couldn’t step up because they were getting to him from the inside.

  21. Red86 Says:

I must’ve visited the wrong website with so many logical post about turnovers from “fake Bucs fans.” LOL.

We can’t do this against top tier teams in the playoff. Also, no points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters aren’t helping. I want the team to succeed. This is unacceptable.

  22. Zoocomics Says:

I think this game showed Coen isn’t ready for primetime, maybe Baker and our Oline made him look worse than what it was, and please know I really like Coen and this offense, but after the Raiders made an adjustment against us after our second score, essentially stifling our short passing game, none of the adjustments Coen tried went very well until we caught a break in the 4Q. There’s been other adjustments Coen has failed to execute and/or his guys failed to execute that have and/or could have costed us wins. I could be a little off base, but you have to master your craft first before you think you can run entire football team, and in my opinion he’s not there yet. This idea that 1-year play callers can be head coaches is insane. Teams are so desperate to find the next Sean McVay, that they’re setting their franchises back 2-3 years hoping they hit on these young play-callers. We have a few weeks left. With the exception of the Chargers, every team we have left on the schedule is inferior to us from a talent perspective, we probably lead all of them in every statistical category, his offense should lead the way in beating those teams. Let’s see how we finish. Beating the Chargers in LA would be a significant boost to Coen’s resume.

  23. Marky Mark Says:

Man what a bunch of malcontents on this board. Baker plays clutch when he needs to. Do you realize we are the only team to beat Detroit? Beat Philly and DC. Baker loves LA. Beat Chargers.

  24. Lightningvinny Says:

Love the Bake Show ,,, has played just OK last 2 but we won,,, he’s a winner ,,, and we are on top of the NFC East ,,, home playoff game baby

  25. Simeon4HOF Says:

I pray the Lord delivers Baker from playing like Jameis before pick sixes

  26. RVATom Says:

Man, I LOVE how THIS JOE named Jameis America’s QB. But he bristles at the concept of Jameis as America’s Turnover Machine. Yeah, the difference between Jameis and Baker? It ain’t good defense. Jameis lost winnable games…all the time. Baker…yea, he’s lost winnable games. He doesn’t have the defense Jameis did and he doesn’t put up the numbers Jameis didw in downfield passing. I am NOT happy with Bake’s regression the last few weeks. But I have more comfortable in him than I ever did in Jameis.

  27. Saskbucs Says:

Baker needs to be better. I’m a huge fan of his but there has been too many turnovers in this second half of the season.

I harp on a here constantly about the coaches being aggressive… and I want that but Baker needs to be a bit more conservative. Especially when we are in range for points.

  28. Rod Munch Says:

“Baker Mayfield: Turnover Machine & Thrill Ride”

    ———–

I must have missed the thrilling part, unless the word you meant to say was boring, or perhaps terrible. Winston would have had the three turnovers perhaps, but also got you 35 points in the first half vs the worst passing defense in the NFL, and probably got you 50 by the end of the game.

Thankfully the defense kept the Bucs in the game as Baker was having his meltdown. Baker is very inconsistent, and since he’s mostly been awful the last 2 weeks, hopefully it means we get a great Baker game vs the Chargers, because the Bucs need him to show-up and can’t count on playing against 4th string QBs every week.

  29. JackieBucs Says:

All of you whining how you can’t do that and meanwhile its been the vast majority of Mahomes season.

Yes I do enjoy a QB that can play a bad game, but show up in the moments that matters.

    Learn to enjoy ugly wins.

  30. Sacker58 Says:

It seems bakers head isnt completely in the game.
The Ints he threw I believe were both on screens where the defender was right in front of him.
That kind of play will get you beat most of the time ,ask Jameis.
However,he hung in there long enough to pull out a win.kudos for that ,but I prefer baker has clean games and not freak us out flashing back to JW.

  31. Marion Morrison Says:

What a bunch of Negative Nancies! Pathetic whiners after an important victory. Why not just say “thank you” to every player….players who played their asses off? Critics are a dime a dozen.

  32. Dldub87 Says:

Baker is hurt plus he’s having to force the ball at times so it won’t come down to the defense in order to win the game. Can any of you name a qb that you can pick up for $30 million per year that’s better than Baker? You’re winning the division but bucs fans are still bitching

  33. David S Pear Says:

Baker is looking more and more like a mix of bad Jameis and happy feet Garcia.

Going into #1 defense, Harbaugh’s Chargers. What could go wrong?

  34. Brandonbucc Says:

He played like garbage the last two weeks. We’re lucky to get away with the wins. We lose next week if baker don’t pull his head out his azz.

  35. Tampawagner Says:

Baker is a good quarterback he has to get wild every once in a while back of the offense line not protecting him and don’t blame him because some times the defense don’t show up if a team score almost 28 or over it not the offense the defense has to come to play not just when they want to and findly runnin back Mr. White findly had a decent game he needs to run like that on the regular would help to the offense line protect the quarterback and make them holes to be able to run and to the defense quit horsing around get those mothertucker’si know ya’ll can from a true devoted diehearted fan from the start to the end LET’S GO BUC’S ya’ll number in my books and don’t mean no disrespect in anything I’m sayin

  36. Bucs-N-Bucks Says:

Let’s take a moment and pause with all this bashing. This is what drove him away from the Browns. We all knew he’s not Elite- Elite but he’s always been #8-12. You have a QB who’s #3 in total yards, #3 in touchdowns, offense is almost the highest scoring offense and you’re not happy. best 3rd down percentage. his receivers are down and ME13 isn’t healthy with the hamstring. O-Line isn’t great to be honest with lots of flags and QB hurries. had NOT had the same offensive coordinator in his 6 years ( every year it’s a new OC). INT’s are awful and he needs to just toss the ball away after 3 seconds unless we are desperate to extend the play. fix the defense and get some edge rushers and secondary!!!

  37. drdneastup Says:

You can’t blame the TO’s on the receivers but you can give the middle of the Oline an assist. On the INT in the endsone and offensive lineman was pushed back into Baker while he was throwing the ball, throwing off his lower throwing platform. on the fumble, once again it looked like a jail break in the middle of the line and Baker was hammered by a slew of Raiders. All of these miscues happened on third and longs when Baker was left like a sitting target in the pocket. Hey Coen, Mayfield is a very capable thrower when rolling out. Try it sometime.

  38. 84bucsfan Says:

baker just need to not force it at times, as he does… some times just hit the deck, or run for 3-5 yards….
