Baker Mayfield Credits Offensive Teammates For Having Another Career Year
December 5th, 2024Last year Baker Mayfield had a career-year. He threw for his most yards in a season (4,044) and his most touchdown passes (28).
With five games still to play, Mayfield needs 1,010 passing yards and three touchdown passes to tie his 2023 output.
So yesterday, Mayfield was asked if Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen was behind his even better numbers than last year. Mayfield didn’t deny Coen’s help but said the play of his teammates has allowed him to have maybe his best passing season.
“The run game always helps out your pass game,” Mayfield said. “When you’re able to control the line of scrimmage, when your guys are breaking tackles like our guys are and those holes are opening up, so it opens up the pass game.”
It doesn’t stop there with his teammates. How well prepared Coen has the offense each week has been a large factor in Mayfield having such a good season, he said.
With the recent emergence of Bucky Irving, teams have no choice but to respect the run. More guys playing in the box on defense means looser coverage against Bucs receivers.
Joe is focused on soaking up and enjoying the final five (?) weeks of Coen. Joe is pretty confident the Bucs will miss him when he’s gone.

Saints may very well try and poach Coen this offseason. Don’t see the Jets or Jags going in that direction. The only knock would be his success has been for one season. That didn’t stop Carolina from hiring Canales but the jury is still out on that hire isn’t it?
Belichick will end up somewhere. Detroit will lose both of their coordinators. Not sure Coen gets a chance this year. Good news for the Bucs if I’m right.

Liam Coen is not going anywhere. Baker is fantastic point guard when he’s locked in.

Hey let’s hope they find a way to keep Coen. It has been a while since seeing an Bucs offense this explosive. Just imagine if Godwin had not been hurt. Sadly, we now have a defense as pathetic as past Buc offense’s were. I don’t know, but the Glazers must be thinking the same thing, how do we keep Coen?.
Do we make him head coach, do we offer him a ton of money to stay with the hope of making him head coach down the line?.
I don’t know ,but imagine the Glazers are thinking the same thing!!
I think based on production they make him head coach and add a top notch D cordinator. I believe teams have caught on to Bowles’s scheme and he lacks the talent to implement it anyway. He refuses to change and I guess you can place blame on him and Light for failing to add a middlelinebacker, through trade, free agency and or the draft. It is clear efforts to draft edge rushers has failed on a major level. However, overall Light has performed to well overall to be fired, so that leaves the HC.
Anyway, two things are clear. The Bucs must keep this offense at it’s high level and significant changes must be made to the defense. As J Baptista recently said it does not bode well that Bowles a defensive coach now has such a poor defense. One thing is for sure changes in a major way are coming to this defense and it’s coaches. Just a guess but seeing Coen promoted to HC, does not seem all that far fetched to me., given the alternatives. Do you let a great offensice cordinator walk and keep a defensive HC, whose defense is performing at the bottom level of the NFL in nearly all catagories. That in my mind is slam dunk answer , NO!!!. How do you get there, well let’s hope the Glazers find it!!!

One thing that Bowles excels at is selecting offensive coordinators. Baker has never had the same offensive coordinator two years in a row. Canales poor first season as head coach will scare away franchises that want to win immediately.

Back to Baker, I called it early in pre-season when most were asking if Baker could possibly perform to 2023 levels again. I stated that 2024 would be the “career” year and the better question would be can Baker do in 2025 what he did in 2024. Prediction is looking sound right now. Now about my prediction on Diaby….

The best unit of the team, OL……..by far.

If you are chasing a Superbowl you want head coaching experience. Too many without simply fail. Coen’s resume is thin. I love his creativity but too many better options exist.

I’m not saying the post-season situation with Coen will not be complicated, but I don’t see his departure as a foregone conclusion. From an ownership perspective, one question they surely recognize pertains to what will get more butts in seats for next year and years to come. Boring and underwhelming game play like the first three quarters of last week’s game will not cut the mustard.

Gotta at least give Bowles/Licht credit for back to back years of some of the best offensive coordinator hires in the league.
I’m not sure I can remember the last time the same team pumped out 2 immediate HC’s from 1 year of an OC in back to back seasons. That’s probably some record.
And at least that gives me hope if we have to find another OC depending on how things play out.

One thing is for sure, Jets will not be hiring a green HC. That team needs an experienced HC, not a guy getting his first shot. So I’d take them out of the equation.
Bears have the best team by far speaking of personnel for a new HC. They will be smart to hire a coach who is going to give Caleb consistency, meaning they need to be proven and need to stick around at least 5 years. To me, that’s Ben Johnson’s job.
So where would Coen go? And with that being said do you all really think he will want to leave a team that is close to a 12+ to go into a team rebuilding? To me his best choice is to stay with Baker and maybe take over after Bowles contract is up

The Bucs have a big decision to make re: Chris Godwin this off-season…
They owe him @ $19M in dead cap space. It will be interesting to see what they do.
December 5th, 2024 at 10:16 am
Promote Bowles to ‘Coach Emeritus’ at his current salary. Promote Coen to HC. Hire a promising DC. Draft heavy on defense.
December 5th, 2024 at 10:33 am
Incompetent. Brain dead. Boneheaded. All describes our Front Office if we fail to resign Godwin. Man we’re a different (better) offense when he’s on the field.
December 5th, 2024 at 10:35 am
No, it’s more than that. We’re a better team when he’s on the field.
December 5th, 2024 at 11:42 am
Coen aint going anywhere and Godwin will be re-signed
December 5th, 2024 at 11:47 am
The Bucs will re-up Godwin. HE was having his best season. Bucs will need to Pay Him Well. Our concentration will be bring a veteran rusher to help the Bucs make a run for the Super Bowl and keep searching for a rusher in the draft. Eventually Light will get it right.576

Todd Bowles will be HC for bucs, and Coen will be HC somewhere else. Joe’s right…
December 5th, 2024 at 12:38 pm
I thought we made a mistake when we signed Mayfield. I was wrong.
December 5th, 2024 at 1:06 pm
Liam Coen needs to get paid…he should get a an offer as assistant head coach with a hefty pay raise and keep the offensive continuity. lets grow this offense and watch it mature
December 5th, 2024 at 1:53 pm
Didn’t Bowles comment early in the season that he will be retiring soon? He wasn’t specific but he’s in his early 60s. Coen won’t be going anywhere. CG14 will be back as a Buc. Two (dirty) season-ending injuries a few years apart lower his value. I still get pissed over it.‼️ I’m surprised he hasn’t mentioned retiring. Bucs finish with a winning record with all the injuries will be fine by me.
December 5th, 2024 at 5:50 pm
@joe there is no way the Bucs let Coen walk out. At least I pray they don’t.
December 5th, 2024 at 9:03 pm
I would call canales a success so far, given his lack of talent on his squad. His team plays hard. They lost Jeremy chin, frankie luvu, and Brian burns before Dave got there, yet they’ve been competing for him of late .

Dont take the Raiders lightly and do the Swedish pouches in the locker room
