Baker Mayfield And Pat Mahomes

December 30th, 2024

NextGen Stats links the star signal-callers.

This is the first time Joe can recall Baker Mayfield and star Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes linked outside of the mentions that they both played for Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech.

(Mayfield later transferred to Oklahoma where he played for Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley).

Well, NextGen Stats shows Mayfield pulled off something yesterday that hasn’t been seen since it was pulled off by Mahomes, arguably the best quarterback in the league.

Simply put, if yesterday was the real Mayfield, Joe hopes teams blitz him. Why? Mayfield completed all 12 passes against a blitz, which also included all five of his touchdown throws.

Those five TD passes against the blitz are the most since Mahomes in Week 1 of the 2022 season.

If you do something great that hasn’t happened since Mahomes climbed the same mountain, Joe thinks you’ve landed in elite company.

Sort of like how Mike Evans is encroaching on Jerry Rice’s territory.

    But…..QBR???

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Looks like Joe started drinking early for new years while looking for stats to write about?

  3. It’s Exciting!!!! Says:

I want to keep seeing Trask at the end of games!!!
    Peddle to the metal.
Let’s Buck, Tuck, White and BAKE!!!!!

  4. MadMax Says:

Great point Joe….the man plays his a$$ off and still the haters come down on him….they dont matter much…a little chip on the shoulder motivation for more….

And they havent found his kryptonite! You know why? It doesnt exist

  5. OHBucFan Says:

Huge credit goes to the offensive line. Mahomes has his. Mayfield now has a line of his own. Looking forward to elite play for some time. What a great job done by the front office and coaches. So exciting to see this come together. And let’s not forget the backfield. Fun times.

  6. RVATom Says:

Let me guess…Mahomes did it against the Buc’s rush?

  7. Hodad Says:

The O line was awsome yesterday. Both run blocking, and pass pro, we did what we wanted offensively. We lose Coen we have to keep this system. Whether it’s the O line coach Carberry, or the receivers coach, whoever has been Coen’s right hand man we have to make him O.C.. One thing losing Coen, we can’t let him take his staff with him.

  8. Usfbucs Says:

He has played great for us since his arrival. My only critique is that in an effort to make things happen he holds the ball too long at times.

  9. Buddha Says:

Not “arguably.” Maholms is in a class by himself.

  10. Not Again Says:

Cmon Joe. We know Trask is the Future. Baker is a short term rental.

  11. MadMax Says:

Baker def needs to get rid of the ball faster at times…hanging and waiting isnt working much….and we need him to stay healthy, so running at this point in the season needs to be limited.

  12. ModHairKen Says:

Five TD passes. Could have been more.

What this team needs is another win and 86 yards to #13.

  13. Paratrooper Buc Says:

Funny picture. What is Baker looking at? Like any QB, Baker needed a better OLine, good OC and a run game to shine. Mahomes without a good OLine is why we beat him soundly in the Super Bowl. Consistency is what Baker has lacked but he is better now.

  14. DBS Says:

Make sure to put an astric by the 1000 yards. Other players didn’t play 17 game seasons to do it. Baker will make sure Evans gets his 1000 yards Sunday.

  15. Beeej Says:

Mike missed 3.5 games, so he did it in 13.5

  16. DBS Says:

This is Game 17. They had to extend the season of you want to play that game.

  17. Leighroy Says:

Paratrooper Buc: you must not have watched this game live. The pic captures the exact moment Baker looks up to the heavens after losing the coin toss in OT to the Cheifs. Perfectly catches the “are you kidding me” feeling, because he knew the defense hadn’t stopped Mahommes in the 2nd half, and thus wouldn’t in OT, and that turned out to be true.

  18. DBS Says:

He would have been out on injury in a normal season.

  19. unbelievable Says:

Someone stick DBS in the dryer so he stops being such a wet blanket.

  20. Gipper Says:

We need a few of the geniuses here to tell us that Baker will never be a SuperBowl QB. There is never a shortage of nonsense from this crew. Somehow it would mean more if that was coming from Mike Evans or Liam Coen. Oh yeah, and how about a round of “happy feet” which was a trademark of Peyton Manning moving through his progressions.

  21. orlbucfan Says:

One thing Mahomes has in his favor is STABILITY in his coaches. He endured 3 OCs in 3 years?? I don’t think so! Baker had to endure 2 changes in both his seasons here. Plus, Coen needs to call more creative plays for his QB. Baker is considered short by NFL standards. How about more options? Rollouts? Heck, even a lateral cos with the OLine jelling, and both White and Irving having sure hands, that could be a killer 6 points.

  22. heyjude Says:

Great QB to be compared to.

Agree with OHBucFan, orlbucfan and others. Baker has had to adjust to different teams and coaches, whereas Mahomes has had the solidity of the same HC. Baker is the same age as Patrick and almost the same height too. And Mike, he missed games and is still close to achieving 1000 yards. So proud of this team!

  23. Jethro Tull Says:

Baker is playing lights out. Lights. Out.

I love the one poster’s takes about Kyle “Human Victory Cigar” Trask. LOL. And it’s true, he did great grinding away the last 6 minutes of yesterday’s game. Great decisions. Awesome form handing the ball off. We are so lucky to have him, especially as long as he never has to throw a pass.

  24. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

71.8-Bakers completion %. Not a single quarterback in the history of the NFL has achieved such a high percentage as early as year 8 in their career as Baker has. Drew Brees-the ONLY quarterback to EVER score higher and it took him 16 years to do it. Only 4 quaterbacks have ever broke 70. Elite??

  25. BAKERSBucs says Says:

BTW this is bakers 7th year not 8th

  26. Paratrooper Buvc Says:

Leighroy – thanks for the clarification. I was not able to watch that game because I was with a family member who got surgery and I didn’t leave the hospital until close to midnight. Family member is fine now but that game didn’t record right so I just watched highlights the next day.

  27. scholarbrawler22 Says:

If you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and watch Mayfield’s Sooners record-setting shootout against Mahomes’ Red Raiders. Both QBs were on fire that day. The idea that Baker has somehow just now learned how to play is preposterous.

  28. Captain Canuck Says:

DBS, just an fyi…it has been 17 games the last 4 seasons!

  29. Christina Olive Says:

Always with the Baker hate in the comments. Ugh nobody will ever be good enough for these Bucs “fans”
