“A Bunch Of Asskickers”

December 16th, 2024

Beastly edge rushers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack each played more than half the Chargers’ defensive snaps yesterday.

Yeah, Bosa forced a fumble from the paws of Rachaad White, but what else did those monsters collectively do?

Not much.

The Buccaneers’ offensive line has been mauling for weeks and it’s been hard to take them off their game with any consistency. It doesn’t matter who they’re facing.

Joe is in awe of what Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht has built in the offensive trenches. At 26 1/2 years old, left guard Ben Bredeson is the senior citizen of the starting O-line. The tight ends are even younger.

The line is getting noticed across the NFL, as it should be.

Chris Simms, the former Bucs QB turned NBC Sports Xs and Os guru took his turn this morning on PFT Live.

“Yeah, they got some weapons and they got a quarterback that can throw lasers down the field, but their offensive line is a bunch of asskickers,” Simms said of the Bucs.

Simms says the Bucs have enough to compete for a Super Bowl trip if they can reach the playoffs, and it starts for him in the defensive and offensive trenches.

“Against those types of teams, Lions and Eagles, if [the Bucs] get in the playoffs, they’re not going to be overwhelmed by either one of those teams on the offensive or defensive line,” Simms said. “And that’s what gives them a chance in those types of matchups. They got some other issues they got to worry about; we know that. But man, when they’re playing like that on offense yesterday, they’re scary.”

The trenches are a big reason the Bucs beat the Eagles and Lions earlier this season. And Joe can only imagine what the Bucs would do now to the Lions’ snuggly-soft defense.

With just a little help from the Bucs defense, the Bucs offense, Joe believes, has the juice, versatility and power to will itself a win from any NFC opponent.

Whether the Bucs can maximize their potential is another story.

A young group that should only improve. Interested to see how Klein develops. Nice not to have to worry about drafting oline on days 1 and 2 of the draft.

  2. Saskbucs Says:

Where all the success starts, right there on the OL. Well maybe starts with scheme and coaching that scheme but if you don’t have the horses up front … you are the Jets.

  3. NJbucs23 Says:

I want the eagles. 1/19 or 1/26 NFC championship in Philly. My god, that would make my life.

    Go Bucs

  4. Bucsfan81 Says:

The Lions are really banged up now. A lot of there starters on defense are now hurt. Heard Carlton Davis broke his jaw yesterday in that game. Montgomery has a ACL issue. The Lions might be a quick out in the playoffs with all the injuries they have.

  5. Dew Says:

I saw Kancey make a great play yesterday down field on a pass play in a key spot. Shocked.

  6. Tbbucs3 Says:

Liam Coen really had that Bucs defense ready to play yesterday ….

  7. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Bucsfan81 – Lions are definitely losing the war of attrition. Probowl NT Mcneil tore his ACL, CDIII fractured his jaw and needs surgery, starting DB Dorsey dislocated/fractured his ankle, and David Montgomery has a MCL injury that might keep him out for the remainder of the season (pending a second opinion). Plus they had 13 players on defense on IR before this last game. They won’t be able to stop anyone in the playoffs from scoring points.

  8. Jethro Tull Says:

Lucky to have Jason. Agree with Joes to do what ever is necessary to lock Liam Coen up, make him assistant HC, pay him the king’s ransom he deserves, and let him know he is the head coach upon Todd Bowles’ retirement.

This OL is playing better than the SB OL with Jensen, Marpet, and Cappa. Certainly run blocking better and that is tied to creative schemes.

Young team, though. The challenge now is to not do what they did against Denver after beating the Lions in Detroit. Coach needs to kick their arses this week in practice and remind them they haven’t won anything yet. Then Coach needs to keep letting the defense play fast rather than forcing them to think all the time. Cooper Rush can play. Treat him just like Herbert and Bucs should be fine.

  9. Mike Johnson Says:

Just beat the Cowboys Sunday night. They are my most hated..so called, Amerca’s team of all.

  10. Bucsfan Says:

Lions are a MASH unit , but they have home field and can still outscore almost anyone. Campbell trying onside down only 10 with a lot of time left yesterday was assinine.

this team is starting to look shinier…

when big mike walked off the field i swear i saw a little halo floating above his head and a miniature alien copped a squat on his shoulder pad, so to roll into the locker room for the post game vibes..i’m telling you i was this…!

also i’ve notice the past few weeks merriweather is active and playing pretty well…give him some kudos too

Yesterday offense was great, but defense was probably better…..

The defensive side of the ball is literally a hospital, and they are playing well since several weeks ago, the excuse for the Bowles detractos was that Bucs played against Giants/Panthers and Raiders…..what do they have to say now???

Bowles made several mistakes this year, but he is a good HC and IMO he is not given all the credit he deserves, even more, he is the target of the most Bipolar fan base I ever seen in my life, a lot of genious should admit they were wrong, even one of the Joe´s, not the other Joe, and not Ira, that he has been sharp all seasopn long so far…..

  17. Jethro Tull Says:

Adam from NY – LOL, dude! The right mushrooms can enhance any viewing experience. Share?!

  18. Ed Says:

One of the things I noticed in this game was in the 2nd half the Bucs were applying a tremendous amount of pressure on Herbert with multiple players lining up as pass rushers to blitz. It appeared the corners were more aggressive and around the ball. Even Jamel Dean in a one on one downfield throw turned around and made a pick. That was his first pick since 2022! He played well I thought when he wasn’t 10 yards off.

The Bucs are far better when they bunch up closer to the line and squeeze the field with pressure.

The defense I saw yesterday is the way they should play every week.

  19. Will Says:

Was great being at the game yesterday. There was a lot of Bucs fans there. My wife was shocked as was I to see Bucs representing on the West Coast. Loved seeing Charger fans start leaving with almost 10mins left.

    Nope. Not even a little

  21. Rod Munch Says:

I was listening to various Chargers podcasts and radio to hear them whine and one thing really stuck out… how incredibly important it is to keep Coen at all costs. Pretty much all the shows I heard talked about how impressed they were with the Bucs offense, how crisp, violent, and well planned everything seemed to be. They weren’t really all that impressed with Baker or anything (their words, not mine – they weren’t bashing Baker, just didn’t think he did anything all that impressive), although they did credit him for having better mobility than they thought, but they were extremely jelly of having a cohesive game plan that seemed to take advantage of what the Chargers were doing on defense. I didn’t really hear them down on the Chargers defense, they just thought the Bucs offense was really impressive from a scheme and play calling standpoint.

Mainly their complaints were about the Chargers offense, about how bad this Bucs defense has been, and how the Chargers offense didn’t seem to have any sort of plan and gave up on the run game early, when they had the lead still.

Overall they weren’t as whiney as I was hoping for, nothing like the Eagles fans – who are by and far the worst, most whiny, garbage fans in the NFL. I still love that when the Bucs beat them in the playoffs a few years ago, all the talk was about how Hurts was a bust, they needed to draft a new QB. Then when they Bucs beat them in the playoffs again last season, it was about how Hurts was a bust, a choke artist, and now they were stuck with him because of his contract. Then earlier this season when the Bucs beat them again, it was about how Hurts sucks, is a worthless bum, is too dumb to deal with teams that pressure him, etc. Nothing is more fun than Eagles fans having a full meltdown. I’d love to see the Bucs beat the Eagles again in the playoffs – please, Lord, make it happen!

That’s awesome, what do you think about that stadium? It looks amazing on TV.

Also watching the game I thought there was a surprising about of Bucs fans there as well. I can’t imagine it’s people that live there – but also that’d be a hell of an expensive trip just to see a game. I wonder what that’s all about?

Dave pear , Todd Bowles heard all that crap you said and wants to meat you on the streets..

  25. Baking with Coen Says:

Game ball for Bowles! Defense was Chargers READY!!

  26. Lightningvinny Says:

They keep those Body Blows coming through the course of the game by late 3rd Quarter and 4th the opposing D looks defeated and those 3 and 4 yard runs are 8 to 10,,, Adam Schien morning had Baker as his #5 in MVP voting ,,, and he does get a vote ( you have to pick a top 5 ) So there is at least one voter that thinks something of The Bake Show

  27. Will Says:

    @Rod
Stadium is gorgeous I’ve also been there for a concert. I feel there isn’t a bad seat in the house but after yesterday I may only sit in the 100section either to the left or right of the endzone. Watching the plays develop from that angle was amazing. Whenever the Bucs are in Cali I try to go but I honestly believe yesterday was the most fans I’ve seen.

  28. First Name Greatest Says:

With Todd Blows in charge you can’t expect much. 9 or 10 wins is his ceiling and he’s lucky to ever reach that as a HC

Not confident in these last 3 weeks at all

  29. adam from ny Says:

yeah by late 3rd quarter and 4th quarter our running game becomes unstoppable…teams are just too worn down at that point…

imagine if we can find an alstott type somewhere in the draft this offseason to add to the rb room…

    3 studs and a alstott type…

yeah i know it’s almost non existent…but instead of licht deep diving into small schools for o-lineman – maybe take a year off from that – and do that deep dive for a alstott brusier type that has a little bit of footwork & juke to his game…

can you image an rb room like that…

    we are already stocked af

  30. Larrd Says:

How many Los Angeles folks care about the Chargers? Dodgers, Lakers, Rams, USC, UCLA, and even the Angels and Clippers probably outrank them on the interest scale. They should have stayed in San Diego. No one cares enough to whine.

Another receiver would be good but any competent OC will do well with Bucs OL and QB, if Coen leaves.

Just curious, how confident were you last week? Or the last 4 weeks?

  35. orlbucfan Says:

I have admired the San Diego Chargers for a long time. Part of the reason the team moved to LA was climate crisis. San Diego went through a lot of wildfires in the past through years that hit the city. Caused major damage and evacuations. So, that was a big part of why the team was moved. Shame, too, cos San Diego is one cool town.

  36. stpetebucsfan Says:

ASSKICKERS! That’s it. Units love nicknames. I never thought “gravediggers” or whatever was that clever, but ASSKICKERS really does it!!!

What better image for an OL that is going to be increasingly designed to play some smash mouth football with 1 GREAT RB 1 Very Good RB and 1 rawmeat who has flashed some real talent but is waiting for another chance.

I love BA and Don Coryell football, bombs away, but most of all I love winning and if you can’t go all bombs away the next most exciting thing is to be able to line up and just smash mouth their way to moving the chains..inexorably!!!

Time to go all Conan…I can still hear Ahhnold exorting the “ASSKICKERS”…

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

I’ve always loved the corner endzone at the old stadium, as you said, you can really see the depth/development of everything as it happens – same thing in hockey, btw.

  39. orlbucfan Says:

Rod, go check out the move from San Diego to LA. I’m not BSing. Lot of Chargers fans who still live there were pissed.

    LOL Joe!

Seems to me that there were quite a few experts here who said we screwed up drafting Barton and Mauch. I myself did not have a any faith in Bredeson. Guilty. All the calls to cut Hainsey… Goedeke would have gotten a bus ticket out of town if it were up to some so called fans.

Now?… In the words of the great Stevie Ray Vaughn. Everything is “Lovey-Dovey”! Aint it funny how things change in a few short months?

Those guys are giving defenses nightmares Bosa? Who?

BTW please do not let Chris freaking Simms give these guys a ninckname!

    Go Bucs!
