49ers’ Loss Helped Bucs’ Playoff Chances

December 13th, 2024

Lots of mathematics flowing this time of year in NFL circles.

The world of calculating Wild Card and division title tiebreakers is in full swing.

So last night the 49ers and Rams played an ugly game with Los Angeles (8-6) winning the NFC West rivalry 12-6. That loss by San Francisco (6-8) put more distance between them and the Bucs in a potential chase for the final NFC Wild Card seed.

The 49ers own a head-to-head tiebreaker against the Bucs after beating them Nov. 10 at The Licht House. (The Niners have lost four out of their last five since).

The major-media data nerds that calculate probabilites for all teams reaching the postseason bumped up the Bucs’ chances after last night.

NextGen stats at NFL.com now has the Bucs with a 72 percent chance at reaching the postseason. The New York Times upped Tampa Bay’s postseason shot to 70 percent with a 62 percent shot at a division crown.

The 49ers’ remaining three games are against the Dolphins, Lions and Cardinals with only Detroit at home. Ouch!

Yes, the Bucs (7-6) will be in excellent shape if they can win three of their next four games. Joe has high hopes, including the No. 3 seed that’s in play for Tampa Bay.

While for some it’s fun to look ahead but I hope the Bucs are focus just solely on the chargers. The only way I would feel comfortable about making the playoffs and winning the division is if the Bucs run the table and don’t lose another game. Let’s gooo

    72% is awesome! Go Bucs!

Yes, that sure was an ugly game last night, especially when the one 49er player walked off the field 3rd quarter. Wasn’t a good look. Got the AB vibe from when it happened with the Bucs.

Yea it’s all about making you comfortable #1 .

Win Sunday,, worry about the rest later

Bucs win their next 3, then get to watch Trask hand the ball off and throw screens against the Saints.

  7. BucVoyager Says:

Trask will only see the field if Baker is in traction.

Got the result we needed in that game.

Lot’s of people want more respect put on Todd Bowles name. These last 4 games will show whether they’re right.

some of that “glow-shine” has withered away

If they beat the Chargers, things will be looking very good!

  15. First Name Greatest Says:

With this defense and short bus head coach the Bucs will be lucky to finish 2-2

Todd Blows is a total clown

  16. D Cone Says:

I don’t see how it really helped. Now there are currently two teams in the NFC West that have 8 wins with a week 18 game that could determine the Division Winner. This weeks Packer/Seahawks Game and another tough Seahawks/ Vikings game the following week might open the door for a Rams title and a 9-8 Wild Card.

    Doubt we catch Seattle.

And winning 3 of next 4 will only cut if the Falcons continue to lose too, and the rest of their schedule is pretty soft.

One game at a time. The Bucs need to bring their A game to LA and play hard- focused 🏈 for 60 minutes! The coaches too!

  19. FortMyersDave Says:

Atlanta plays Washington, the ATL wins, the Bucs get help in the wildcard hunt, if they lose, the Bucs get a 1 game cushion in the division in case they lose any of the next 4 weeks which given the head coach will likely happen. One game at a time. This one in LA will be tough, Harbaugh will outcoach Bowles just like his brother and Shanahan did. Bucs need their A game to make sure it does not come down to Turtle Todd and his soft zone D to win.

Do these percentage predictions take into account if a team has a bunch of injuries? Or do they just look at their record and the rest of the schedule?

Joe didn’t program the software that determines these percentages. And the companies that use them certainly aren’t going to give away software by detailing the elements used in developing the program they’ve spent thousands of dollars on.

So, guess you will have to trust the numbers on face value. 🤷‍♂️

  22. Jethro Tull Says:

Wow this is great news. Playoffs here we come. Coach has solved the problems on defense. Bucs win on Sunday behind a stout defense and a brilliant scheme.

  23. George R Says:

The Falcons are going to lose Monday night, bank on it. The Raiders will be up for the prime time game.

What the h3ll has gone down with the 49ers?? They lose and have a LOSING record, I guess there’s hope for the Bucs, walking wounded Defense and all. Go Bucs!!
