YaYa Diaby Said Keyword With Patrick Mahomes Is “Contain”

How to defense Pat Mahomes?

Pat Mahomes will go down as having one of the greatest arms for a quarterback in NFL history.

But it is a different element of his game that as Bucs outside linebacker YaYa Diaby worried.

“We rush the right way and rush together and keep him in the pocket,” Diaby told Joe last week. “Limit him. Keep him contained to prevent him from making plays down the field.”

“Plays” is the keyword. Plural. When Mahomes gets outside the pocket, he can rifle a ball far, far down the field.

But Mahomes’ most underrated element is the guy is a magician with his feet. Just ask Devin White. This guy has Barry Sanders blood in him somewhere the way he can dodge and reverse field on a dime.

It’s almost, at times, like Mahomes is an illusionist.

Diaby said he’s very impressed by how the Chiefs run block. But when Joe tried to keep Diaby on point talking about the Chiefs’ offensive line, Diaby always went back to Mahomes’ feet.

“We have to keep him in the pocket,” Diaby emphasized.

  1. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I expect Diaby to be very ineffective tonight, even more than usual. He does not change direction very quickly and the bull rush is his only pass rush move. One hopes Buster Kancey will hear his name pronounced after the introductions.

  2. Jack Sparrow Says:

Remember, Kirk Cousin was always in the pocket and you could not stop the offense….. he just throws it in the middle and boom 20+ yards gain….. what more with Mahomes….. geeezzzzz !!!

  3. Show Me the TDs Says:

With our pass rush the only time Mahomes will need to use his feet is going on and off the field and breaking the huddle.

  4. Jack Sparrow Says:

Chiefs offense does not need to be 60% ready to beat the Bucs. With the kind of Bucs defense we have, Chiefs will probably use just 30% of their offense today and still beat the Todd Bowles Defense….. horrible.

  5. BakerFan Says:

I watch Mahomes weekly and I would never describe him as a cannon arm. Elusive YES and not even in the same class of Barry Sanders.

Put Pressure and Containment on him and he will give it up…. Go back and watch the Raiders game last year. They put a clinic on how to defend Mahomes.

  6. Bucsfan Says:

Mahomes has an ankle injury that he has been nursing for weeks. mahomes has been hesitant about running much at all due to the ankle. Stay in your lanes on the rush and let David blanket Kelce, which he is very adept at doing. Bucs 24 KC 23

  7. Greg Says:

Contain? Forget it. You don’t contain what he does. You push him off his spot with 4 and the occasional blitzer with good coverage downfield. And you put him on his back multiple times.

  8. Faspro Says:

Eh, this defense? Are you kidding? Y’all can’t stop a statue…
Watch Mahommes laugh at this defense(???) on the sideline.

  9. MadMax Says:

Yaya goes after him….we need that pass rush ….send Winfield as the spy

  10. MadMax Says:

    We have to smother them

  11. MadMax Says:

    WAKE UP D!!

  12. Xristos Says:

Mahomes is at his worst form ever. He averages 235 yds passing with 8 TDs and 9 INTs. Kelce the same with only 48 yds per game.
Chiefs Offense at the worst point since Mahomes is there.
How probable is that we will see Mahomes as an MVP candidate after this game with us ???
    Go Bucs

  13. Pewter Power Says:

Eh??? You mean like Lamar Jackson? Of course you’ll contain him in the contain you can’t get to the quarterback. Contain him in the pocket with how wide open receivers get lol this game might be hard to watch.

  14. JimBobBuc Says:

Bucs should be leading the league in ‘contains’. Any play that’s not a sack is a ‘contain’? No wonder Yaya is excited about this game.

  15. snookman9 Says:

love the Bucs but its an easy one.
Hammered the over on Mahommes, D hopkins, Kelce, Worthy, Grey, Hunt ETC.

We will get embarrassed tonight………..and I am taking advangage of it $$$

For bettery odds I took the Chiefs -14

No way we compete in this game.

  16. Tony Says:

The talent is there on D but I think he’s just running the D wrong & using some of the players wrong, too! He needs to stop being so stubborn.

  17. Tony Says:

    @ShowMeTheTDs

Can’t forget him using his feet running onto the sidelines & running in& out of the locker room, too! Or maybe going to get some Chicken Mcnuggets at McDonald’s for Andy Reid at halftime.

  18. Larrd Says:

I’d rather our former supposed top pass rusher talk about putting Mahomes on the ground! He will pick apart the Bucs secondary if he has a pocket.

  19. Dave Pear Says:

Yaya will be dropping deep into coverage, he won’t have contain responsibility .

    Right, LovieII?

  20. White Tiger Says:

Do they know they can’t get to Mahomes, so they’re sacrificing the rush to contain him? Sounds like it to me.

  21. Defense Rules Says:

The secret tonight isn’t the Bucs’ defense; it’s the Bucs’ offense. The team that played them the best IMO was the Ravens, even though they lost 27-20. Ravens controlled the clock 34-26 minutes, and ran the ball very effectively on the Chiefs (32 rushes for 185 yards). Their passing attack was even decent (26 completions in 41 passes thrown for 273 yards). They did good on 3rd & 4th down conversions (8-of-16), but missed out on a couple opportunities to score in the 1st half & it cost them the game.

Bucs can play that kind of game. Ravens gave up 3 TDs & 2 FGs in 9 drives; forced 3 punts & 1 INT. Bucs’ offense can control the clock like the Ravens did by using a combination of running & short passes. And for heavens sake, go for TDs not FGs. Final score might well be something like Bucs 30 Chiefs 27 IF our offense can control the game. And no turnovers tonight. You don’t beat a 7-0 team with sloppy play.

  22. Rod Munch Says:

Well, there’s the answer on Bowles gameplan for tonight.

Contain = Super Soft Zones, Passive Defense

Expect a disaster unless this is a misdirection play by Yaya.

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Defense Rules – The Ravens destroyed the Bucs, got a huge lead and then just sat on it – allowing Baker to rack up a bunch of garbage time stats.

If this is like the Ravens game, the Bucs will lose by 28, since KC has a much much better defense.
