Too Many Injuries May Doom The Bucs

November 10th, 2024

Needing a miracle?

If the Bucs somehow make the playoffs after today’s loss, one thing needs to happen.

Todd Bowles needs a contract extension.

Joe doesn’t know how a team loses a Pro Bowl receiver, an All-Pro tackle and a Hall of Fame receiver in a passing league and still survives.

That’s what the Bucs are looking at as a result of today, not to mention the Bucs’ starting two cornerbacks are also out. Mike Evans may return to action when the Bucs next play in New Jersey facing the Giants on Nov. 24.

Chris Godwin is likely out for the season but the Bucs have left the door slightly ajar if they make the playoffs.

Hope you didn’t choke laughing so hard.

In the second quarter today, perhaps the game’s best tackle not named “Penei Sewell,” Tristan Wirfs, went down with a right knee injury. Wirfs could barely stand up much less walk. He leaned on two trainers and limped heavily off the field. It was pretty clear he refused to be carted off the field.

Joe doesn’t know how a team can overcome these injuries, if they continue. It’s not just the injuries, but who was hurt. The Bucs, with props to offensive coordinator Liam Coen, are surviving with Evans and Godwin out.

But even with Zyon McCollum and Wirfs healthy, the Bucs weren’t playing well the past month.

Without Wirfs, Joe doesn’t know how Baker Mayfield can be effective short of throwing two-yard passes, which he did after Wirfs left.

If Bowles can still guide this team to the playoffs after these injuries, yes, he deserves a contract extension. Right now that seems improbable. Because Bowles can’t even lead his team with a fourth-quarter lead.

Why does it seem Bowles is scared to try to win in regulation?

  2. Jerseybuc Says:

    Radio’s defense doomed the Bucs!!

  3. Austin Says:

Scrap this year, take LVD off the field to keep him fresh for next year before he retires. I bet a solid draft, spending some money on free agency, Upgrade Liam to HC and get Saleh as DC… thats the best formula I can think of

  4. Jerseybuc Says:

Carolina is one game behind them. 1 game!!

  5. QB6 Says:

Joe…why didn’t he ice the kicker at the end of the game?

  6. Caleb Says:

Cold day in hell before Bowles will ever deserve an extension.

  7. Tony Says:

    @QB6

Exactly. He had his timeouts. That’s why I say sometimes it’s as if they just don’t care sometimes.

  8. BucsBeast Says:

    Stick a fork in it.
Bowles has lost the fan base.

  9. Josh Says:

He needs to go… the offense suffers injury after injury and continues to perform the defense uses it as an excuse every week… FIRE BOWLES!!! PROMOTE COHEN TODAY!!! MAKE THE BUCS GREAT AGAIN!!! sorry i thought that was funny personally lol…

  10. Josh Says:

Even if the players haven’t quit on Bowles, the fanbase has clearly shown its frustration. Raymond James was ROCKING today, especially when the 49ers’ defense was on the field. That’s because it was FILLED with 49er fans. Even if the team was winning, it’s evident that the fans are unhappy with the product on the field. If they were satisfied, people would be willing to pay to attend the games. Something has got to change if you’re going to FIRE BOWLES!!! This is the week to do it. Has an interim coach ever won the Super Bowl? No, but maybe you can convince Belichick to step in during the bye week. That would be unprecedented as well.

Do I personally want Belichick? No, but do you see Liam Cohen, as a first-year interim head coach, taking on more responsibility being better at coaching the defense than what we currently see. The unfortunate answer is no from me…

  11. BucsBeast Says:

Bowles routinely loses when his defense has to make a stop to win the game.

  12. Ben the GA Buc Says:

I’m actually getting over an MCL sprain myself. It is painful. I’m sure his is worse, but I have definitely not been able to do things I want to do because of it. I hope him being a little less than half my age, he recovers far more quickly than I have.

  13. Tucker Says:

This team making the playoffs? You are a funny guy Joe, every quarterback that faces this defense has a season high game. That kinda defense doesn’t make the playoffs Joe, they barely have a better record than the saints and panthers, playoffs? thanks for the laugh Joe.

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

Sittin here havin a cold one LMAO. Injuries may doom our Bucs? You Kiddin me?
we are already doomed. Just ask our sorry a..Defense. You consistently let teams drive the ball down your throats with less than a minute on the clock? Come on Man. Doomed is not the word. How about Disgraced?

  15. BallHawk75 Says:

Joe should be flogged, beaten, drawn and quartered, electrocuted, burned, stabbed, shot, disemboweled for even uttering the words contract extension and Bowles I the same sentence. You’re part of the problem, not the solution. Fake news.

  16. Kyle Bush Says:

No matter what happens, barring a Super Bowl victory, Bowles doesn’t deserve a contract extension. The thought that someone better isn’t out there is insane. Give me Vrabel. Bowles is under .500 as a head coach. For us and in general. Gotta get somebody more competent regardless of injuries. Baker’s tough but our defense is downy soft.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

4 completions to WRs…,you can’t win with that.

  18. Pewter Power Says:

That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. If he Can guide us to wins against the weakest teams in the nfl? Reward the fans with another half a decade of mediocrity lol haven’t we suffered enough

  19. Bosch Says:

My biggest concern about the injuries is that the Glazers give Bowels a pass. You can go ahead and mail it in for this season. But if Bowels gets a pass you can forget about the next several seasons.

    FIRE THE TRAINER!!!!

  20. BucfanDMV Says:

@tampabaybucfan I agree its as if Mayfield has been told not to even try and attempt to pass the ball to the WR’s …. the bucs will continue to lose with that formula.

  21. Crickett Baker Says:

Compared to early games that I could barely force myself to watch, the last 2 games were exciting football! With all the injuries, the storm and all, I think Bowles is doing a good job. I may be the only fan who feels this way.

  22. Beeej Says:

Knute Rockne couldn’t win with so many starters out. D has too many people starting who shouldn’t even be on the field as rotational guys

  23. SBucs Says:

It’s a business, the Glazers are not extending Todd if the fans keep the pressure on for a new head coach and defensive staff.

  24. Kgh4life Says:

Bowles is not a good head coach. He lacks the spine and the innovation needed to match good OCs. He has become a liability.

  25. unbelievable Says:

Thanks god Bowles ran the SOFTEST TRAINING CAMP AND PRESEASON IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE!

Just look at all the injuries it prevented!

    What a genius.

  26. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

At least Bowels keeps those valuable time outs and doesn’t use em in a game. Moody missed 3 straight field goals. Why not ice his ass before that kick by using a timeout Toad?

  27. BucNasty Says:

Injuries to the offense do nothing to the fact that our defense is asscheeks. Consistently unable to get teams off the field. I’d love to know the % of 3rd and longs converted against us. It’s baffling

  28. Sacker58 Says:

PLAYOFFS,?PLAYOFFS!! YOU SIR ARE DELUDED! NOT WITH THIS DEFENSE OR LACK OF!SMH,
    CLOSE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
RUINED A HEROIC EFFORT BY BAKER AND THE UNDERMANNED OFFENSE.
    THIS IS HALF A TEAM!

  29. Sacker58 Says:

When J.T.S GETS THE ONLY SACK SOMETHINGS REALLY WRONG.

  30. Pewter Power Says:

Bucs were doomed the moment Bruce Arians named him head coach. The division titles was like lipstick on a pig. The worst division in football and Bowles is the only coach left standing from last year. As soon as Atlanta got a new coach and quarterback that was all it took to out coach Bowles because we still have the better roster

  31. Peskajumba Says:

Our secondary has been so bad for so long that i sometimes reminisce about Jermaine Phillips.
    Where is Tanard?

  32. Ed Says:

Playoffs? C’mon man. Injuries? All these teams have injuries but when you have a defensive coach who can’t at least try and put a game away you are what you are, a career loser coach who clearly isn’t coaching younger players and has to have high paid veterans to win games but the days of Suh and JPP are over and the modern game has passed by Coach Bowles.

  33. Hearty Dikerson Says:

“The Bucs, with props to offensive coordinator Liam Coen, are surviving with Evans and Godwin out.”

Huh? We haven’t won a single game since losing them.

  34. Larrd Says:

Bowles has to win at least one playoff game. Too many winnable games lost due to terrible fourth quarter decisions.

  35. Dave Pear Says:

Maybe if someone would take Lovie out, then he could be treated for his stubbornness coma — Naa nevermind. He’s immune to treatment, improvement, accepting input. Hideous. Nauseating. Excuses are forthcoming from the pontiff of the site. We all know what excuses are good for.

  36. Saskbucs Says:

Extension!? Yeah there are injuries but other teams in the league are doing more on D with less. Even bad Ds in the league have an outlier game and shut someone down cause they have a great game plan. Haven’t seen that since week 2 and Bowles is a D coach. Every QB we see sets their new season yardage high.

I’m so sick of watching the team play conservative at the end of half’s and games. Not using timeouts! Give the D a rest maybe, ice the kicker maybe, or stand on the sideline emotionless thinking about god knows what! Bowles has got to go!

  37. Joeybagodonuts Says:

Boles has to go. Way to many mistakes in 4th qte. Not icing kicker after missing 3 fg is youth league football incompetence

  38. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Actually with McCollum’s hammy injury, Bucs are now down their top THREE corners. Joe’s forgetting Bryce Hall Who is out for the rest of the year.

So, now we’re down our top three wide receivers and our top three corners.

I don’t think I ever remember a season with this many injuries hitting us.

Seems like guys are dropping at least two per game that we play…..

As upset as I am at bowl in his defense, I don’t think there’s a coach out there that could survive a season and have a positive record with that many injuries.

  39. #1bucsfan Says:

1988 i was thinking the same thing. Bin so frustrated with this defense and how they give up the booty not to mention the refs called a terrible game we got bogus calls some no calls and even some of the calls in our favor sucked.

  40. Jeremy in Lutz Says:

After last week why on earth would he kick a field goal then leave it to our defense? Has he not been paying attention to how bad our defense has gotten?:

  41. ukester Says:

lost the fan base nahh the season ticket holders are on the bag for next year and the year after that-why would they care about where they finish money keeps rolling in. At the trade deadline With no trades before the deadline writing was on the wall what the upper brass thought about this team.

  42. Suggiefresh Says:

As I said in another post, we need to flip the switch and
Cut off this season. Let Mike come back and get his 1K
yards but DO NOT try to get middle of the field draft picks.
Jason Licht does not believe in Free agents so picking
the last 4-5 years in middle to late toubd picks have
gotten us pretty much crap outside linebackers, injury
Plagued corners, and poor to middlin’ 3rd-4th receivers.
If Licht won’t work through free agency, then we are seeing
the lack of talent late round selections are generating.

  43. al Says:

it’s not bad defensive play calling. todd bowles will blame it in on injuries

  44. Bonzo Says:

The offense scores enough points to win, just can’t keep up with all the points they allow… geez. Purdy looked stupid comfortable in the pocket 90% of the time.
