Todd Bowles Not Giving Backups A Break

November 10th, 2024

Who is to blame?

Brock Purdy attempted six passes in the 49ers’ final, game-winning drive Sunday. The ball never touched the ground.

That is simply pathetic given the circumstances. The game was on the line. Do or die.

The Bucs died.

It is a bit understandable. The Bucs were down three starters in the secondary. And Antoine Winfield hasn’t looked right since the season opener.

Purdy ate them for lunch. And this seemed to irk Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

“It doesn’t matter who was in the ballgame,” Bowles said. “You understand what the game plan is, you have to execute. We didn’t execute.”

So Joe has to ask: Do these guys know how to execute? The Bucs have played 10 games. They’ve been practicing since late July. It’s mid-November.

What have these players been doing all these months? Were they paying attention in practice or meetings? Or did they just not know? The latter means they haven’t been coached up.

Of course, if the players were not put in position to make plays, that’s squarely on the coaching staff.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

Such a stupid low T take by Bowles.

Players do matter, it’s why some get paid more than others. If it doesn’t matter who is out there, then why bother paying anyone?

Just stupid, lame, generic, bumper sticker trash.

  3. SBucs Says:

I believe your point is the coaches are not coaching during the week or adjusting during the game. I agree absolutely. All these players have been playing football since they were in grade school. They have a general idea that it’s all about stopping the other team. But, It takes a coach to focus their play on the moment. The defensive staff is just too good at making excuses.

  4. bucs71 Says:

I am glad with them needing a field goal, he has the corner playing 25 yards off the wide receiver!!!!!!

  5. SBucs Says:

Todd has never won a game against a better head coach… and there are 31 of those.

  6. Jerseybuc Says:

    Cuz radio is a backup

  7. Josh Says:

He doesn’t just stand there looking confused; he really is confused. Elite players make key plays, as Munch said—why pay anyone if it doesn’t matter? Football is a combination of physical ability, mental ability, coaching, and scheme. Some players fit the scheme, some are mentally elite, some are physically elite, and others are simply coached up. Ultimately, though, some players are just “THAT GUY”, which is why there’s a Hall of Fame.

  8. John Mason Says:

Welll now look….Buc’s are just one game ahead of the lowly Panthers….we see the same lose every week….youmust have a good HC to win close games…Buc’s do not have that..really is getting time to Fire Bowels…he has a lot of old friends on the defensive staff…he won’t fire them….we need some new blood and new ideas on defense.

  9. GP Says:

    Fancy that!
    Todd’s blaming someone else!?!
    No accountability whatsoever.
    SMH

  10. Vegasbuccaneer Says:

You can’t beat this dead horse anymore please for the sake of baby who Jesus fire Todd

  11. GP Says:

And to those wanting Belicheat to take over….
    Just, Please Go Away!

  12. Gipper Says:

He needs players. This team had been depleted by injury on both sides of the ball. Kind of amazing the team remains competitive. Defense lacks speed and tackling skills.

  13. MegaFailure Says:

    GO GET BELICHICK

  14. Lightningvinny Says:

Bowles always leaves way too much time on the clock at the end,,, like he has no idea the other team will score and end the game ,,,, 10-7 this year and a big run coming but Bowles needs to do his part

  15. Nprbuc Says:

    Fire Bowels tonight!

  16. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

It’s time to make a Bowels Movement!

  17. Bucnjim Says:

Is what it is, but the 2 Falcons losses are what still P!ss me off. KC & the 49ers are just better than the Bucs anyone with a right mind penciled in a more than likely loss for both. The Falcons on the other hand are an average team that just lost to the Saints. Those division games come straight down to coaching and we let Raheem Morris beat us.

  18. Suresh Says:

The players don’t want to get injured anymore. Maybe that’s playing in their minds and playing a bit soft. The mentality is hurting the Bucs currently

  19. richardtyson Says:

I’d put Todd Bowles in my top 1000 coaches list. FYI

  20. FrontFour Says:

Hey Joe, how about calling out the problem on D is talent. You can’t coach guys up to be NFL starters when they’re UDFA’s. But that would mean you’d have to criticize St. Jason. God forbid you include you’re sainted GM in accountability for the thin as hell roster on D. Worried about your press pass?

  21. Pewter Power Says:

Damn defensive head coach who was a free safety in the nfl can’t seem to figure out how to stop any offense.

  22. Ol' Boy Says:

It’s gonna be great once they coach it better and then play it better. Just ask Todd, he knows.

  23. Bucks 'n' Bucs Says:

The players were in the exact places they were coached to be in. Which happens to be the WRONG place. These recent losses are coaching mistakes….period. To go preventative with 15 minutes left is just inexcusable.

I have always tried to stay positive but it’s becoming impossible.

  24. Josh Says:

Tell Cohen and the offense—who have been completely depleted as well—that there’s no talent and it’s Jason’s fault? It’s called a scheme refusing to move on from pet projects KJ Britt, but he doesn’t have the players to run the scheme he wants. So either he’s not talented enough or intelligent enough to adjust it to fit the players he does have. Talent is there, but it’s not being coached up.

Why is Vea dropping into coverage at the beginning of the game again this week? Why do Logan Hall JTS and Braswell like 40% of the time? Why does Jason draft pass rushers, only for Bowles to insist they learn how to cover, instead of focusing on what they were drafted to do—rush the passer? I wanted them to go after Myles Garrett, but this “genius” would probably have moved him to press corner.

  25. Kenton Smith Says:

There’s really no good excuse for giving those guys 200 yards after the catch. I’ve said before on here that tackling is about “want to” and I don’t know where our want to has gone to. The talent levels of course have some to do with missed tackles. But it seems like these guys are thinking too much instead of reacting and making plays. Special teams made a big play. Offense misses Evans and misses the hell out of Godwin. Maybe we can overachieve and squeeze in with 10 wins but I’m losing faith we can do much more. 3 most important things in football – block, tackle, and hang onto the football. Last 2 games zero turnovers. Good blocking and OLine play. 2 out of three ain’t good enough. Got to tackle.

  26. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Kenton, we did recover the muffed punt. That’s a huge turnover. Without that and 3 missed FG’s, we lose by double digits easy.

  27. Kenton Smith Says:

Alvin I meant we haven’t turned the ball over the past two games. Last week Travis Kelce fumbled and today we got the special teams turnover. So we are holding onto the football, blocking well but we just aren’t tackling well Alvin. That’s my take on how we can do better. Against these top teams I’m not sure if it’s enough but it would turn some of these losses into wins. There is always plenty of blame to go around when you’re losing.

  28. bucfansince84 Says:

licht is part of the problem

  29. BucNasty Says:

When’s the last interception we’ve had? Honest question

  30. David Says:

They have done a good job the last two years rebuilding but the reality is they need Dean as DB and Dennis as ILB back. They need their speed. They are too thin at linebacker and they still aren’t getting consistent pressure. I expected way more out of Yaya at this point.
They are fully capable of still getting to 10 wins this year, but they’re a couple players away from truly being a Super Bowl contender

  31. FortMyersDave Says:

John Mason is right, Bowles will not launch any of his defensive buddies unless he gets a call from his bosses at OBP. Just like Koetter not launching Smitty until he was forced to. Time for the Glazers to start a HC search behind the scenes while Todd secures a top 10 draft pick.

  32. Eli Says:

Sick and tired of this so called coach. You can blame the players only so long. May be it is time to measure the coaching staff starting with Mr no emotion.

Why isn’t Tucker being used. Why do our run plays begon with up the middle. Why isn’t White used as a receiver with Bucky and Tucker in the back field.

Season is practically shot, is it time to cut the conservative calling and take a few risks, like going fir 2 against rhe Chiefs.

Shake it up Hot Toddy before you run out of time. Focus on defense and maybe help out the offense for change.

  33. Defense Rules Says:

Bowles … “You understand what the game plan is, you have to execute. We didn’t execute.”

It was so frustrating watching the Bucs play today (defense, offense and S/Ts). Blame it on the coaching staff all you want, but we had too many guys playing who had no business collecting money as profressional football players. I don’t care if we hired Vince Lombardi to coach these guys, far too many of them weren’t winning their one-vs-ones & thus were getting blocked out of the plays; far too many missed tackles that most college players could’ve made; and far too many play so far off their man that any high school QB could complete passes against them.

Both our offense and our defense are badly beaten up, and it’s hard to compete in the NFL like that.

  34. Dave Pear Says:

Fire Lovie again for the first time.

  35. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

They’ve forgotten more about playing defense than they’ve learned. It’s not all the coaches fault even though Blowles scheme has a lot to do with it. Doesn’t challenge receivers, defenders line 5-10 yards back and no good pressure what so ever.

On offense we’re hampered not just by the lack of receivers but our qb is too short to utilize the middle of the field or they’ll get batted down or intercepted so it’s forced to throw more to the outside plus Coen continues to use White instead of Irving and Tucker. We have no stars on this team, Baker and Irving are the closest we have

  36. Pryda30 Says:

    I’m sure it’s fundamentals that’s on you co@ch

  37. Dave Pear Says:

Please please please just send the Loser to academia . Do it at 7am tomorrow.

    Please.

  38. Darren caputo Says:

    Fire bowles

  39. Karac Says:

3 time outs and don’t attempt to ice the kicker who missed 3 and barely made the game winner. Fire him already

  40. Kenton Smith Says:

Karac, what ticks me off is first and goal at the eight with 3 timeouts and we don’t immediately take one of those to slow things down and discuss what we need to do. I thought the same thing after each play down there. Inexcusable.

  41. Charles Cox Says:

Bowles got to go the defense cannot stop any when the game is on the line. The Bucs could have beaten KC but the defense gave up just like they did with SF.Im a season ticket holder of Bowles is the coach next season I will cancel my season tickets. Fire The head coach or lose a season ticket holder..

  42. brooks Says:

    6-11 nice season

  43. al Says:

it’s not bad defensive play calling. todd bowles will blame it in on the backups

  44. Jerseybuc Says:

Hey Joes. I have repeatedly asked you to help me here. Been on this site for 10’plis years and registered with my email address. Jerseybuc is my Twitter handle from day one. Somehow another person uses my name. Do you allow people to use other peoples names on this site?? Has to be way to police this.
    Very annoying.

  45. Julio A Cepeda Says:

Well we are still in it , but we have to win all the remaining games. And I don’t see it happening with our defense we can not stop anyone . I understand we are hurting but these are games we should have won kc and 49ers we were right there to win the games but once again going for 3 points to tie the game wtf we were there to score a TD we forgot about our tight end after the half I don’t think he touched yhe ball again. I don’t understand it. Get rid of bowels he sucked when he was with the jets and he sucks here point blank. Can’t blame baker because he is doing his jobs our defense is the problem.

  46. Bucs Bucs Bucs! Says:

Jeez. Get off Bowles. We are 4 players away from A Top 3 team. We’re close. We’re had extreme Salary cap issues the last 2 years from Brady. We have had tons of injuries too. We are headed into a bye, and then 7 WINNABLE games.
GIVE BOWLES A BREAK. Negativity is easy. Try the overview effect.

  47. ☠️cross☠️bones☠️ Says:

    Wirffs geting hurt sucks.
Why is Skule still on this team?

  48. jbceedeez@gmail.com Says:

…you’re absolutely correct…they don’t know how to execute because Bowles
doesn’t know how to implement…Brady stated the issue during the game,
    that I’ve stated for months…they can’t play zone coverage…t o much space
between LBs and opposition, they allow the catch , yards and then tackle…
LBs don’t play for the ball !!!
