Kyle Shanahan Has Shown A Read On Todd Bowles’ Defenses

November 7th, 2024

One-sided rivalry.

One thing almost certain in the NFL is that Sean Peyton knows how to put points on the board facing a Todd Bowles defense.

There’s another offensive mind that also appears to have a good read on Bowles’ defenses. That would be Kyle Shanahan.

The big cheese of the 49ers, Shanahan has had strong success as a play-caller (and head coach) facing Bowles.

Here are the head-to-head matchups between Shanahan and Bowles. Bowles teams’ records against a Shanahan offense are a combined 0-4.

2012: (PHI interim DC): Loss, 31-6
2019: (Bucs DC): Loss, 31-17
2022: (Bucs HC/DC): Loss, 35-7
2023: (Bucs HC/DC): Loss, 27-14

Props to Evan Closky of WTSP-TV Channel 10 for the research.

This is not good. So the Bucs better bank on scoring 30 points Sunday against the 49ers if they want to have a realistic shot of winning.

In five of the first seven games, the Bucs scored at least 30 points. Without the services of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin the past two weeks, the Bucs averaged 25 points a game.

Joe isn’t liking this math.

Todd Bowles proved he is not capable of coaching a team to a super bowl when he didn’t go for two. He is mr 500 or aka Jeff Fisher.

  2. Kgh4life Says:

Todd Bowles keeps doing the same thing over and over, which is why the best offensive minds outcoach him regularly.

  3. jugheadfla Says:

what are you talking about just Shanahan joe? Every coach has a read on our defense! Its boring, docile, and flaccid….just like our HC!

  4. Scott Says:

When all of your OLBs have 2 sacks or less something is up. It’s really gotten old at this point.

  5. Jeff Says:

There isn’t a DC in this league that can’t shred Clueless Todd’s defense.

  6. Citrus County Says:

If Todd Bowles is intelligent and I’m not saying he isn’t, then he should learn from his mistakes. He continues to make the same play calling and time management mistakes. Why ? Does he just not learn ? Does he not realize his past mistakes ? There were times last year when he showed courage and belief in his players to make plays on 4th down and goal line situations and was successful. This was a change from his past behavior and many of us were convinced he was growing as a head coach. Has he suddenly lost confidence in himself ? Is he being manipulated and if so, why ?

I reiterate, his words after an inexplicable and epic collapse were “I had nothing to do with that”.

  7. Pewter Power Says:

Another team that embarrasses his defense. Niners were on a bye and had extra time to prepare as if they needed it

  8. Citrus County Says:

It seems to me that Bowles is being set up for failure. I smell a hint of Machiavelli and the end justifies the means.

  9. Citrus County Says:

The saying that history repeats itself may apply. First it was B.A. and the second time it may be B.B.

  10. Ricki Says:

    what defense?

  11. mj Says:

purdy just count to three and throw it over the middle and 500yds later we’re 4-6

  12. Danny Cuebas Says:

    So you’re saying we’re due for a win… LOL

  13. Upstate NY BUC Says:

If we can just keep KITTLE under 20 catches over the middle we will be fine!!!! Play some defense guys, bring back that magic, Back in the early days mid season 49er victories always boasted us for the rest of the year… it’s do or die!!! Go Bucs

  14. FortMyersDave Says:

It will be a miracle if the Bucs’ D does not get boat raced on Sunday, especially if CMC starts. If he does, he could get 2 TDs as will Kittle. Unless Baker and the boys play a perfect game, it could be a blowout and if Baker keeps it close, you know Bowles D will choke in the end…… With a loss, the season is likely over given that the Bucs will be 4-6 and behind so many teams for a wild card spot as it is doubtful they could catch either Washington or Philly, The Pack and Vikings and whomever is the 2nd place team in the NFC West. The only question will be when Bowles gets launched unless the Bucs pull the massive upset.

  15. View from 132 Says:

Just like Monday. The team’s only hope is winning a shootout with the offense. Not a great look for a defensive coach. Mike Tomlin should be coach of the year. He’s winning with a terrible roster. We have the opposite.

  16. Brian Dorry Says:

Yeah it’s not ideal when you have a defensive head coach and his scheme has a glaring weakness against the two hottest offensive schemes in the NFL…the Shanahan and McVay systems. Especially not ideal when many of your top NFC competitors are running those systems.

  17. #99 the Big Fella Says:

Todd Bowles is a dinosaur. Every good offensive coordinator has him figured out.. unfortunately Todd hasn’t figured anything out.

  18. Buc4evr Says:

Todd never changes his base defense and our opponents know it. That’s ok if you have a monster D line and hard hitting LBs that can also cover. The soft zone works because all the pressure comes up front, but when no pressure the QBs just take whatever the defense gives them. Either Todd is stubborn or the talent level on the defense is very low. In this case both. Bucs only have 4 talented starters on the D. Jason made some bets on bad players and this will need to be corrected in the off season. Todd needs to be gone also.

  19. Crickett Baker Says:

It sure is odd to me that Travis Kelce (on his podcast with Jason) raved about what a good defense the Bucs had, against the Chiefs. On the other side, without Chris and Mike in the game I bet if we had gone for two and missed you all would be mewling at that.

  20. garbs65 Says:

If the Bucs were to squeak out a win over the Chiefs or 49’s, it would have been the Chiefs…given their injuries and average performance. We just can’t defend the middle of the field…our offense has to outperform whatever team we are playing offense. We are not going to keep any team from scoring. I predict that the 7 remaining qb’s we face will have their best stats of the year or even in their career. But we will need Baker and his new receiving corps and our RB’s to pull the load.

  21. Bobby M. Says:

He’s going to get booed by fans with another loss at home. Every year he gets in these ruts that require a massive comeback…..only to reach 9-8, fans are tired of watching him waste season after season.

  22. RBUC Says:

Anybody who says the Steelers have a terrible roster doesn’t know anything about football!!The Steelers have big, physical football players that impose their will on teams( they have an identity) Let’s just say the Bucs are built the opposite
