Red Zone = Green Light For Bucs

November 9th, 2024

Touchdowns in the red zone.

This is another reason why Joe is pretty confident, short of Team Glazer dumping a major bag of loot in Liam Coen’s lap, that Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen will be a head coach somewhere next year.

Coen is simply getting the job done. Despite having a dink-and-dunk offense, he has guided Baker Mayfield to lead the NFL in touchdowns.

One reason Mayfield is throwing so many touchdowns is that the Bucs have one of the best red zone offenses in the league.

Seen in this graphic below by stathead Sam Hoppen, only the Bills, Lions and Crows are scoring touchdowns in the red zone at a higher clip than Tampa Bay.

It seems roughly 70 percent of the time the Bucs enter the red zone, they come away with at least six points.

The highlight of a good offense is one that scores in the red zone, preferably touchdowns.

That’s the sign of a coach that knowns what he’s doing.

If the Bucs don’t spend whatever it takes to keep him, they shouldn’t be owners. No brainer. It doesn’t count against any cap.

  2. Dave Pear Says:

Too bad the defense gives it up like Halloween candy when opponents are in red zone, green zone, chartreuse zone, any zone. What a waste.

  3. Tye Says:

Bucs need to keep Coen and Mayfield as a duo…
Bowels is dead weight and needs to be replaced as DC and HC!!!

Coen will be HC next year. HC of the Bucs. Todd has proven that the defensive game has passed him by about 4 years ago, plus his in game blunders never stop.

  7. CleanHouse Says:

    Buc4evr is exactly right

  8. Mike C Says:

Would be nice if the Bucs had a coach who knew what he was doing on the defensive side of the ball.

  9. HC Grover Says:

Simple…Fire Blunderbowles and make him HC.

  10. MadMax Says:

Mid season firing coming up if we lose a close one to 49ers because of todds stupid decision making again…..make Coen the interim and then figure it out from there…of course need a DC pronto…i think a local high school team has one that could do better than our current disappointment

Excellent offense! Thank you for sharing the graph.

Joe you’re pretty confident Coen will be a head coach somewhere next year? Because his red zone offense is among the league best? I guess your job is to get clicks. And you are doing one helluva job. I’ll give you that.

  13. Bojim Says:

Final decision is the Glazers. I don’t think they’ll let him go. But I thought they wouldn’t let Canales go either. lol

@ Kenton…puullese! It’s common sense not “click searching” Fire Bowles, put Coen in the HC position and hire Robert Saleh as DC.

  16. JustOneGame Says:

@ Kenton, red zone offense is just one factor why Coen will be a HC. Almost every statistical category has the Bucs offense in the top 5. His biggest accomplishment to me is taking a run game that ranked 31/42 the last few years and is now in the top 10.

The NFL loves offense and Coen is proving to be a masterful game planner & OC. With the NFL looking at about 10 open HC opening next season, it’s a good bet Coen will get one of those.

    Hopefully it’s with the Bucs!

    31st/32nd**

  18. BallHawk75 Says:

The Glazers simply cannot pass up the opportunity to promote Coen to HC.

    Offensively minded coaches win trophies.

Few defensive minded coaches win titles.

A decent DC can be found easily to improve this defense.

The Kamala Harris of coaches needs to retire.

  19. Tony Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if they let him walk because they’ll do anything to save as much $$$$ as possible. They’re cheap. That’s why I was surprised the Bucs even got Brady. They must of been drunk that day & they probably didn’t realize they were spending $$$$ in FA. They don’t wanna go out & spend $$$$ on FAs to help the team. They need to let somebody else takes over that cares & then they can just focus on Manchester United.

  20. David Kilmer Says:

I thought from the beginning that Coen was a step up from Canalas when they hired him.I admit I was wrong he is like 3 steps up. It was clear that Canlas was inexperienced as a play caller. Hopefully, like the Lions OC, Coen sees the advantage of staying put for a little longer enticed by the Bucs rewarding him handsomely. I am not sure they would let Bowles go for Coen unless the defense continues to implode, which certainly appears possible.
I am not sure if the game has passed Bowles by. It could be other teams OC’s have just caught up to him. It is also possible it is complete failue by him and Licht to adress the edge situation and or if the injuries just took their toll. One clue when Winfield and Kancy returned the defense did not improve.

  21. Kenton Smith Says:

Sure the defense has been under attack this year. Smith is a good rookie. Braswell too. Kancey is coming on. Need an inside LB and a corner this draft. Yes Joe and an edge. McCollum will be a good one. Anybody understand patience? We built the offense first. Smart move. We mortgaged our future a bit with Brady and his buddies. It was worth it. If we kicked a field goal before the half last week we probably win. Defense had to overcome 7 turnovers the 3 games before that. We’re close and I’m not ready to give an inch. But everyone else is certainly entitled to their opinions.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

The defense and the W-L record are a simple reflection of Lovie. Glazers know. They like offense and wins. Jason knows too.

  23. Woodenman Says:

Didn’t we make the OC the head coach when we fired Lovie. How did that work out?

  24. Dave Pear Says:

    Woodenman — 9-7.

But Koetter made the mistake of letting his buddy run the defense and when the buddy got overpaid to stay, he quit. 2017 and 2018 were disasters — because of the defense. At least Koetter was the offensive guy. Your current head coach is a DEFENSIVE guy overseeing the worst defense in team history.

Jason won’t let Liam make the same mistake that Koetter made.
