“Players Have To Hold Players Accountable”

November 14th, 2024

Todd Bowles is looking for the strong leadership he and Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht crowed about all offseason.

That’s not to say the Bucs haven’t gotten any, but Bowles is looking for more than dinner.

Bowles told the Buccaneers Radio Network that he wants players over the bye week to “make sure we watch a lot of tape” and understand preparation.

And when the Bucs arrive back to the office early Monday morning, Bowles expects guys to be on each other — about everything.

“Gotta help each other out. We gotta hold each other accountable,” Bowles said. “Not just coaches, but players have to hold players accountable. And they understand that when they get back.”

Joe hopes it happens to the extreme. Somebody needs to get up the butts of younger players who are not playing aggressively or fearlessly enough. Tighten up. Focus. Have more pride. Leave it all on the field.

Yeah, Joe’s looking at the defense and too many missed tackles, fat cushions and questionable efforts. The Bucs need more guys playing like Christian Izien and Tykee Smith on every snap.

JPP and Suh were the last alpha dogs/leaders. This roster is totally devoid of any of those personalities. In fact, the team has taken on the personality of Bowles, which is bland and definitely not inspiring. The only one that shows intensity is Baker.

The players approach to the game is a reflection of their coaches. Bowles isn’t a good leader of the younger generation. He doesn’t develop anyone, shows zero emotion, I just don’t think he connects with those players. He seems more like veteran friendly style coach but those guys rarely take teams over the top. If the players love their coach, odds are the team will be mediocre.

I agree with Joe Tykee and Izien are dawgs

Our coach says something that makes complete sense, so this is the perfect time for everyone to comment on how horrible he is.

No wonder the world is so divided. We let frustration overwhelm our thoughts so much that there is no space left to realize our commonality.

But I guess painting everyone as good guys and bad guys is easier…

At this point I think we should try having Izien and Smith start at the safety positions, AWJ and JW3 have been dog water most of the season. Still not sure why we can’t get Mike Edwards back as a solid backup and Patrick Peterson is still out there too, I thought he played really well last year for Pittsburgh. Anyone is better than Funderfunk or whoever else we got from the Checkers drive thru.

Accountability is one thing, having the talent to do the job is quite another. In the Bucs case, they have neither.

Pelsbuc61 … ‘JPP and Suh were the last alpha dogs/leaders. This roster is totally devoid of any of those personalities.’

Exactly. Baker is the unquestioned leader of the offense IMO, and it shows. Our defense (unfortunately) has no one in a comparable position. I thought that LVD, Vea & Winfield would step up, leadership-wise, in those 3 position groups, but I’m still not seeing it.

Yes, I agree the Bucs on defense are sorely lacking talent!!. Absent that this defense simply does not have the confidence or motivation we saw early on in the Detroit game. You could see the mentality they were not going to let Detriot’s offense beat them. In my opinion I saw little motivation after that until the KC game. They were actually in the game until the end.Yes that game came down to coaching as the defense was gassed at the end and likely could not have stopped a high school team at that point. If you want accountability then players who are not playing need to be benched. However the plain truth the depth just is not there in cb, linebacker, edge rush and I don’t have any idea of what is going on with the safeties, but they are not playing good football.
I know everyone talks about a easy schedule after the bye, however, who wants to see this defense in the playoffs!!. Sorry this defense is embarassing and I don’t see much in the way of improvement this year.

DR beat me to it! We have no Ray Lewis type that can hold other players accountable. Part of the problem with being a young team is the fact that no one has established that respect beyond Levante David. He’s not an in your face type of player!

Richbucsfan, we do have the talent to be average and that’s really all I’m asking for. Anything but last in the league.

You want an example what we are missing. Look no further than last week’s 49er game. After Moody missed his third field goal, Debo Samuel got in his face and told him something like, “Get your head into the game!” That is key player telling a team member to get on the stick. We could use a little of that on this team.
Unfortunately, the holder took offense at Samuel ragging on “his” kicker and reacted to Debo. Debo took a swing at him and brushed Moody in the process. The whole thing was dismissed by 49ers as game day emotion.

Minus the swing, this is the example of what this thread by Joe is all about.

The cushions are on the coaches, they can tighten them up if they want.
