“Not A Ton Of Guys To Throw To On The Outside”

November 12th, 2024

Dissed?

Wait a minute.

Why is a guy employed by the Bucs taking a dig at the team’s receivers.

So retired Bucs tight end Cameron Brate (2014-2022) is now a voice on the Buccaneers Radio Network. Brate loves throwing sarcasm around in his new role, but that wasn’t the case this week when he talked to right tackle Luke Goedeke about Tampa Bay’s running game.

Brate asked Goedeke why the run game has taken such a huge leap forward this season, and Brate emphasized that’s impressive considering defenses aren’t respecting the Bucs’ outside receivers right now.

“Really the past few weeks, you know, there’s not a ton of guys to throw to on the outside,” Brate said. “The defense knows we’re going to run the ball a lot.”

Joe doesn’t like the whole notion of the Bucs not having “guys to throw to.”

Why Ryan Miller and Rakim Jarrett got the majority of receiver snaps Sunday against the 49ers is unclear. You can count the total NFL catches those guys with two hands.

Speedster Trey Palmer caught 39 balls as a rookie last season and the Bucs said they wanted him more involved this season. But he didn’t play much Sunday. Veteran Sterling Shepard also played, but less than Jarrett and Miller. Rookie Jalen McMillan was active but did not play.

Still, if you’re on the field, then you’re supposed to be capable. Joe gets what Brate is saying but doesn’t like the sound of it.

Goedeke appeared to agree with Brate.

Hopefully, this is all in the rearview mirror come Sunday, Nov. 24 against the Giants. By then, Mike Evans (hamstring) is expected back and McMillan (hamstring) is supposed to be fully healthy, as well.

I didn’t get the way they were using our receivers either. What bothered me more then who was out there is, you have to take some shots down field reguardless. I would’ve sent Palmer on some go routes for sure. Who knows, maybe you get a big gain on a catch, or a flag. The safeties were way up with the backers, they were ripe to get beat deep. The O line was doing it’s job, I don’t get it. You need a few explosive plays on offense. You have zero chance of an explosive pass play if you never try. Don’t know if this is Bowles influence on Coen, or Coen growing timid. I think it’s Bowles.

  2. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

If our qb was able to utilize the short/ intermediate middle of defenses like everybody exploits ours he’d have more passing options but he can’t and his only true option is Otton

  3. Hearty Dikerson Says:

Licht hasn’t drafted a good receiver since 2017. Palmer is looking like a bust and McMillian has been a complete disappointment so far. Add WR to the list of draft needs, including OLB, ILB, DT, CB, OG, S, P. (But Licht has been crushing these last few drafts, huh?)

  4. Bucnjim Says:

When you only have 2 seconds to throw it limits your options going downfield. As well as the Bucs have been running the ball their pass blocking has been suspect at least by the eye test. The west coast style has been doing well because that’s basically our only choice. When the number one CB on the opposing team is facing the number 4 or 5 WR what does anyone really expect to happen.

  5. Bucnjim Says:

Don’t really have a problem with Brate or anyone else stating the obvious.

  6. Let ‘em bake Says:

Coen knows those 50/50 balls that Mike and Chris win would be losses against the niner secondary. Int avoidance.

  7. Saskbucs Says:

Yeah I am not sure why we didn’t see more Palmer. Only thing I can think is the guy has been dropping it in practice and he takes too many penalties. Good reasons to keep him off and we have seen him make those mistakes in game, but damn, especially early with Wirfs still in… we needed to stretch the field and make them respect the deep shot.

  8. A Bucs Fan Says:

Some observations are that Trey doesn’t appear to know the playbook, Shepherd is playing hurt, J-Mac is a rookie who is also banged up, Jarrett is in his preseason returning from knee surgery and Ryan Miller is a special teams /PS guy thrust into action because a combination of all the previous plus Mike and CG are out.

    I agree with Brate.

  9. Beeej Says:

There are already seven posts and we haven’t seen Dave yet. I hope he’s okay

  10. D Cone Says:

Don’t have to be a Rocket Scientist to look at Joe’s Weekly Passing Chart to have a good idea where the passes are going. Surprised it has not been posted yet but then there’s not much to brag about this week.

When the defender’s have the answers to the test and are at the spot you get a dismal production.

When 62 % Completion Percentage is the Highlight of the day things are not looking good. 116 yards on 18 receptions is a Danny Dime’s Day.

Receivers have an extra week to work on getting open in that area about the size of the End Zone that Mayfield thrives in when facing a Crappy Defense and struggles when a Good Defense locks it up and allows no YAC. Crappy Defenses coming soon so things should at least look a little better in the Box Score.

  11. BallHawk75 Says:

Faker Mayfield cannot throw deep passes unless a hall of fame receiver can jump or dive to get the ball.

He’s only had two winning seasons his entire career.

There were some huge miscues from him on Sunday.

Most of his yards come from YAC yards the receivers do the work for.

Dink and dunk wobbly throws at best.

  12. Rod Munch Says:

“Why Ryan Miller and Rakim Jarrett got the majority of receiver snaps”

    ———–

I’m going to guess it’s because they’re the two best available run blocking WRs on the team. Just a guess. Shepard is a smaller slot guy and I’d guess that’s why he didn’t get as many snaps. Plus, he just hasn’t looked as good as he did earlier this season when he was playing less – he’s a guy who gets hurt all the time and missed tons of time so the reps might be piling up and taking a toll on him.

McMillan clearly wasn’t healthy, he’s your best available WR and if he could play, he’d have played.

Palmer barely playing is puzzling, but Coen has more than earned the benefit of the doubt so I assume he has a reason.

  13. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Rod haven’t you noticed half the time Trey is on the field he has no clue where to lineup?

  14. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Easily Bakers worst game of the year!! he missed 3 real easy throws Ira could have made!!! Ryan Miller easy touchdown comes to mind. Hey it happens, I’ll be there in 2 weeks watching our wonderful defense play for our season.. Daniel Jones for 350 and 3 touchdown throws anybody!! Go Bucs….

  15. Tucker Says:

He isn’t lying everyone in the league and fans included have seen it.

  16. Steven007 Says:

Why Palmer isn’t schemed up for several basic slants per game. I won’t ever understand. That’s in his wheelhouse + it’s not complicated.

  17. adam from ny Says:

it appears the palmer needs to be on meds and reeled in, or something…like does he have ADD, OCD, etc…all i ever see is the dude basically out of focus, yapping away, ranting and smiling ear to ear about something…it’s like he’s not even in the lane…dude needs to get focused man!…wasted talent is worse than no talent at all…he might need meds or something…

with mcmillan…it’s like: do you even lift bro?…..duke is a full on bust and an injured incompetent at this present time…who doesn’t really even want to compete…

so your 3 and 4 receivers supply zero juice and have failed miserably in a time of need…

    your 5 and 6 have been okay…shep and jarrett…

and miller, who would be maybe number 7 is here due to utter failure from 3 and 4…

it went from an injured room to a failed room in almost a heartbeat…i wouldn’t doubt that when mike and chris walk into the room, they say hello boys, then smile and yell out: yall dudes is scrubs!!

  18. Ed Says:

Alright we know now that the wide receivers aren’t good so what is plan B. It is so obvious that there are 4 guys on this team that make plays in passing game without Evans and Godwin:

    Otton, White, Irwin and Tucker.

That means using the Pony formation with Bucky and Tucker in the backfield and motioning White as another target. After the way White caught that contested throw from Mayfield with Boza holding his left arm, White showed more ability to come down in traffic and make a catch then Palmer, Miller, Sheppard, McMillan or Jarrett.

On the last Buc possession, you have to use that Pony package, they know you are gonna run it so why not have the big power back Tucker in the formation and have Irving and see what you get on first down. It gives you more options and speed than giving it to White on those delayed handoffs. Please Todd, get your head into the game and make it harder on the defenses.

Start throwing White out there lined up outside, I trust him far more catching short passes than any of the other scrubs on the team.

Again, we all talk about designing plays for the talent, not a system. Likewise, in 4th quarter when you know these teams are going to throw outs to the sidelines to save timeouts, you have to protect the sidelines and force the ball in the middle, not have the corners playing 12 yards soft. Its stupid, it really is.

  19. Xristos Says:

It appears during the summer and training camp Bucs media and us the fans over valued some of the players.
The story was how deep is this team in the WR position with Evans, Godwin, Palmer, McMillan the steal of the draft and so on.
Although Evans and Godwin are huge losses from what we see on the field we got not depth at all. I m not bashing McMillan he is a rookie or any other player. But man not only now that they have an opportunity to show somethingg not only they dont produce but most of the time they are not even on the field. It is clear they are not who the media and the fans thought they were. Maybe they will be better in the future but what we see now is not good at all.
    Go Bucs

  20. DJB Says:

Why not give Tanner Knue a shot? Not much of a physical specimen, but during pre-season games he busted his azz. He did not look at all timid, showed good hands and toughness.

  21. A Bucs Fan Says:

Xristos You’re not being critical but just as a comparison Chris Godwin only had 10 catches for 83 yards and no TD’s in his first 8 games as a rookie.

J-Mac still has plenty of opportunity to succeed.

  22. #1bucsfan Says:

Gotta get Palmer more involved. Guess mcimillian hasn’t bin healthy. I saw he was active last game but didn’t get on the field. Right now with Evans and Godwin out this is the time to see what these young guns got get them the reps so they can develop and learn if they are what we need when life comes without Godwin or Evans.

  23. Conte Piscatelli Says:

I thought when Evans and Godwin went down the one bright spot would be an opportunity for McMillan and Palmer to get more involved in the offense. I know McMillan has been hurt, but Palmer hasn’t really even been on the field, not sure who’s decision this is, but he seems like the one guy left in the time they could have tried to work some plays specifically for. Instead we take downfield shots to Ryan Miller???

  24. westrnpennafAN Says:

Suddenly everybody wants to get on Baker for the lack of medium and long pass attempts. Baker is throwing short dink and dunk because that is all he has been allowed to throw .We know Baker has an arm and wants to sling it but the coaches [Coen probably] is micro managing him and it is costing the Bucs. Also he has not had a lot of time to throw. Same as last year. he coaches lack of trust in Baker and the young receivers [or lack of aggressiveness] is throwing shade on the whole team. They have been playing not to lose and of course doing that ensures that they will lose and they have. Bucs need to show some cajons. What have they got to lose?

  25. A Bucs Fan Says:

Westrnpennafan – You must be new. We have already gone through the analytics on Baker’s deep throw accuracy on this site. He averages about 35% and under to anyone not named Mike Evans. If he throws it to Mike it’s about 49%.

He does have a great arm, but his intermediate to deep throw accuracy has been below average to bad. Period.

  26. adam from ny Says:

the 49ers #1 corner, all pro charvarious ward was out for the game and replaced by a rookie…

so i guess that rookie was quietly the player of the game…because i know if the tables were turned, and he was on our team, he would have given up mega big plays and 2 tds…

what could the reason be we didn’t werk this rook over ?

  27. miken Says:

Mike Williams for a 7th rounder would have made sence.

  28. FrontFour Says:

Been wondering where Palmer’s been. He’s had the drops since college but the guy can fly. Something’s up between him and Coen. Otherwise doesn’t make sense.

Would like Joe to ask Coen in next presser.

  29. unbelievable Says:

Meanwhile, Roquan Smith just won his appeal and got out of his fine for ending Godwin’s season with an illegal hip drop.

    Cool. Cool cool cool.

As for the WRs – I’d say the only one really disappointing me is Trey Palmer. But then I remember he was a 5th round pick for a reason, I guess.

  30. Sal Says:

Outside of evans and Godwin this team has no receivers that are worth a damn #!!

@Rod haven’t you noticed half the time Trey is on the field he has no clue where to lineup?

    ———–

I haven’t really noticed that, but also haven’t paid attention to him that much. I’m not nearly as high on him as most people on this board seemed to be when they were saying he’s a #3 WR, I thought he’s a good fit as a #5. As for lining up, he should just go out there and run as fast as he can in a straight line to try to draw safety support.

Anyways, Ryan Miller is a trash player. Rakeem is fine as a 5th or 6th type player, but when you’re starting both, you got some serious issues.

    ———-

Good to see you’re writing off the teams #3 WR without even barely seeing him. I’m going to guess with your amazing scouting ability you also said Otton needed to be replaced, he’s terrible, awful, will never make it.

  33. Hodad Says:

Only have 2 seconds to throw? Any NFL receiver can be 20 yards downfield in 2 seconds. Play action 2.2 seconds to throw you can hit a 30 yard strike.

  34. Capt.Tim Says:

Palmer, Shepherd, and McMillan are doing fantastic!!!
The Bucs are just playing Miller and Jarrett to punish Mayfield!
    Riiiight

Pretty sure the Bucs are starting the guys that Mayfield is connecting with during the week.
    Nuff said

  35. TDTB Says:

All pre-season we heard how Devin Culp was TE/WR hybrid. Seems like a natural candidate to fill in for Mike Evans but I haven’t seen or heard from him.
