Monday Night Blues For Baker Mayfield

November 1st, 2024

Are there coincidences in the NFL?

Not often.

For example, Baker Mayfield has a 1-6 record in Monday night games through his seven seasons, including two weeks ago against the Ravens.

Is there something about Mayfield and Mondays? Probably. By contrast, Mayfield has a very strong record in Thursday night games, though he’s 0-2 with the Bucs on Thursdays. And Joe certainly can’t pin the Bucs’ loss a month ago in Atlanta on Thursday on Mayfield. That honor goes to the miserable defense.

Todd Bowles’ Bucs teams (2022-2024) are a sad 3-6 in night games, which Joe thinks has to be partly tied to some form of preparation, considering Bowles has a .500 record as Bucs head coach.

Tampa Bay was 6-4 under Bucco Bruce Arians in regular season night games.

Of course, Joe brings this up because the Bucs head to Arrowhead Stadium on Monday night to face the Chiefs.

Joe would share Patrick Mahomes’ record on Monday night, but Joe wants Bucs fans to stay optimistic and retain their appetite for a fine Hooters lunch.

“Joe certainly can’t pin the Bucs’ loss a month ago in Atlanta on Thursday on Mayfield.”

    Riiiight.

  2. Allbuccedup Says:

Monday night better competition plus Mayfield was on bad teams before. Probably lose Monday again because without Evans and Godwin its almost impossible to beat the Chiefs.

  3. MadMax Says:

Football God’s owe us this one…..all the crap we’ve been dealing with…jets upset last night, now it’s our turn Monday night!

  4. Bucswin? Says:

Hard to keep the stimulants stimulating all day and into the evening. Heck hard to keep it going for 3 hours. up and down we go. Someone teach him how to meditate! Go BUCS

  5. Watch More All-22 Before Commenting Says:

Wins are not a QB stat. Football is a team game.

  6. Michael Says:

Everyone keeps talking about Baker and the loss of two of the best wideouts in the NFL…
Tampa has a defensive head coach…and no DEFENSE! My goodness the secondary has been making some mediocre QB’s look like HOFer’s…my grandmother in a wheelchair could get open downfield on this bunch…

With the current defense, Monday Night could be a Mahomes shootout…

  7. Tbbucs3 Says:

Bonzai…are you suggesting Joes wrong for not pinning a putrid defensive defensive performance on the quarterback?

Last time I checked, Mayfield didnt give up 509 in a declining Kirk Cousins.

  8. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I will probably watch more of the Gators opening season basketball game Monday night. On the other hand, maybe I’ll set up 2 TVs.

  9. Bartow Buc Says:

It comes down to the best team wins. If you compare the Bucs to the Chiefs, we have a better offense. Baker is a great quarterback, but MaHomes has the ability to scramble and make things happen ( score points). If the defense can hold the Chiefs to 25 points , we have a good chance at an upset !!

You know who I’m pulling for !!

    Go Bucs !!!

  10. Dave Pear Says:

As long as a certain circus clown runs the defense, Baker is gonna feel pressure to score every play. Bye week = bye bye Tood.

More articles calling out the defensive coordinator please. It’s tough to be a Buc fan and endure inept defense.

  11. A Bucs Fan Says:

Regardless of Baker’s weakness throwing the ball more than 10 yards he is still distributing the ball to the highest-scoring offense in the NFL over the past month and they are still losing because of the defense.

  12. Alanbucsfan Says:

The Bucs’ loss a month ago was on an unfortunate fumble by the reliable Irving – turnover lost the game

  13. First Name Greatest Says:

Wins is not a QB stat, never has been never will be. Go by a pack of football cards, you will never see the Win/Loss record in the stat column.

It’s a media talking point. Prime time games you play good quality opponents, and coaching matters in this league and Todd Blows is holding this team back

  14. DoooshLaRue Says:

All the butt hurt fan boys, Joe included, moaning in the offseason about no national respect and a lack of prime time games.

What the heck were you all thinking?

  15. Bosch Says:

One Thursday and two Monday games over a 5 game span. That is egregious. Maybe there is something to the conspiracy theory that the NFL hates the Bucs.

  16. D Cone Says:

With Maholmes @ about 80% in the Win Department it’s going to take a clean game from the Bucs.

Bucs are 8.5 point Dogs on the road as are the Broncos @ the Ravens.

Doubt the young receivers will be allowed to deviate from their routes like Evans and Godwin might based on what they see before the snap other than Mayfield checking to HOT Routes on what he sees. Based on how Spags operates there may be quite a few hot routes and there might be some looks that call for them and the D drops back and jumps them. Got a feeling the Chiefs defense is going to put on a clinic.

Mayfield’s faced a Spag’s defense in 2020 and did alright with 200 yards passing but he had a better receiving crew, Browns had a great defense and it didn’t hurt having Nick Chubbs and Kareem Hunt in the backfield.

Being given the opportunity to more than triple your money by taking the Bucs on the money line is basically a sucker bet and I don’t think 8.5 points is enough. Could be the first game Chiefs put up over 30 this season and the over/under of 46.5 doesn’t even look good.

Of course I will look forward to seeing if any of these are any of Joe’s best bets

  17. Ds Says:

I never expect a win in prime time

  18. Funderstruck Says:

Dooshy— Let’s be honest and fair, here.

The 2023 5th best scoring defense traded Ryan Neal for Jordan Whitehead. Shaq was fading and Yaya was ascending. Promising young players on both side of the ball that we expected to take steps forward. Most of them have. Be honest about that.

And remember *why* we thought we were disrespected—the national types didn’t believe in Baker. Last year they didn’t believe in he or Bowles. This year it was all Baker…and the absence of The WunderCoach, Canales. I think those folks have been largely disproven. We are losing for reasons we didn’t expect.

And we cannot discount The Curse of the Chairless—the immutable Kaufman Kurse, reminding us at the start of the year of how fortunate the Bucs have been on the injury front over the last several years. None of us were prepared for Ira’s Ire!!

  19. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Alanbucsfan – It’s fair to suggest, but too many events happened after for that play to be the one reason they lost. There was the missed facemask on Bucky the following drive? Or perhaps it was the former VP of Officiating acknowledging that the Refs bent the rules to allow Atlanta to spot the ball with 1 second left in the game… even though their offense wasn’t set to spike the ball. It’s inconsistencies like that and now the touchdown that was a fumble by Pitts that have fans skeptical of the legitimacy of the outcomes of games.

  20. Mike Johnson Says:

For wahtever reasons, We do not fare well in Prime time. I’ll be nice here and say our Bucs fight hard. They play well. BUT…they will not beat KC. No way.

  21. Buchen61 Says:

Headline tuesday morning… Bucs score 38 and lose by 2 tds… Joe calls for Mayfield to be released

  22. Buchen61 Says:

    Censor much here

  23. Crickett Baker Says:

I seem to remember that Arians had the team practice at night because we were so bad in night games. Maybe he will remind Todd.

  24. Marine Buc Says:

It doesn’t matter what he plays…

Baker is a mediocre (at best) NFL QB.

He is exactly who we thought he was when he arrived from Cleveland/Carolina/LA.

    J.A.G.

  25. Gipper Says:

The whole point of the article was to pin the ATL Monday night loss on Mayfield. Really surprised the first ATL game where Bucs also lost and Mayfield has 3 TD and 0 INT wasn’t also his fault? The 500 yards and 4 TD Cousin had in game 1—-Mayfield’s fault.

Of course you are right, but the IQ of the average NFL, beer swilling, “fan” is about 80. You forget most of these “fans” don’t know how to pour water out of a wet boot. Troy Aickman in his first year at Dallas was 0-11. Don’t think the Hall of Fame held that against him.

  27. Buchen61 Says:

I get fairer stories on MSNBC

  28. Buchen61 Says:

If we would have only held onto famous crap legs Jameis we’d be somebody

  29. miken Says:

We got no shot. Will look like Denver game but worse.

  30. Buchen61 Says:

This ones for marine buc… Heres the list of qbs with more td passes than baler this year:

Put on a clean pair of panties and relax dude

  31. Rod Munch Says:

In 2016, with the Chiefs on a winning streak, Winston took the Bucs to KC and upset, throwing for over 330 yards – and giving the Chiefs their first home loss in over a year.

No reason an MVP QB who is better than Mahomes can’t at least do the same.

  32. Buchen61 Says:

Imagine what Balers numbers would look like if he played 2 games against Tampa

  33. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Buchen61

Throwing INTs and continually missing down field throws will get you beat every week in today’s NFL.

I changed my under-garments today. Did you?

    LOL!!!

  34. Buchen61 Says:

Cant argue history with you Rod but also cant marginalize what losing your top two wrs means to an offense and playing with a defense that couldn’t stop a 3a high school from scoring. Just not a fair argument

  35. Rod Munch Says:

Buchen61 – I’m just busting balls. Baker has mostly played well – although I don’t think the Bucs have much of a chance in this game as I can not see the defense making plays.

Then again, Bowles might actually drop the soft zone garbage and play aggressive – he tends to do that when backed into a corner, and it works, then as soon as he’s out of the corner we goes back to the soft zone crap. Not sure if he feels like he’s cornered yet, so who knows what we’ll see.

  36. Gipper Says:

Nothing ventured; nothing gained. Mayfield critics on these pages don’t like the Drew Brees comparisons. Maybe they will ignore this one as well.

Drew Brees in his first 7 full years in the NFL, threw for 15 or more INT’s 5 times. Baker Mayfield in his first 6.5 years in the NFL threw 15INT’s or more ONCE. It remains to be seen how many total picks Mayfield will throw in 2024. The point is QB’s will throw for TD’s and INT’s. Both happen. Lebron James and Michael Jordan also miss foul shots. Brees INT’s will not prevent him from getting into the HOF.

  37. Buchen61 Says:

Yeah im hoping for a miracle Rod but i probably got a better chance of J lo calling me for a booty call than the bucs have of winning Monday night. Lol

  38. Gipper Says:

Just think without those 3 interceptions against New Orleans, instead of Bucs winning 51-27 Bucs might win 72-27? It’s Mayfield’s fault. RodMunch is right. Mayfield stinks.

  39. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Rod Munch – did you look at Winston’s game against the Ravens? Their bandaid secondary is why the browns won. He had 7 turnover worthy throws and at least 4 dropped (hit in the hands) interceptions of Ravens secondary players. There’s a video on YT showing each play if you want to find it.

  40. HC Grover Says:

Face the music. Bowles is around .500 one way or another.

  41. Rod Munch Says:

A Bucs Fan – Remember last year, with the season on the line, @Carolina, when Baker threw four ‘almost INTs’ and the Panthers kept dropping them? Or maybe the five ‘almost INTs’ that Baker threw vs the 49ers? Or maybe the one actual INT that Baker threw in Detroit in the playoffs to end the game.

    ——-

Baker was 1-of-10 with 2 INTs on passes over 10 yards in that Saints game. So yes, if Baker was better, they probably would have put up at least 70. But, to be clear, I have no issues at all dinking and dunking your way to 50 points, do that every week if it works.

  43. Gipper Says:

    RodMunch,

Mayfield threw a perfect deep pass that ME dropped in the end zone in the Ravens game. Didn’t hear a word out of you. Last year threw a perfect 60 yard completion to Trey Palmer that he caught and fumbled.
You ,of all people, are aware until only the last couple of games the O line without Goedeke wasn’t providing any time for Mayfield to throw. This coupled with trend toward two high safeties prevented Mayfield from even looking deep.
Bucs have been taking what the defense allows. What should they be doing?

  44. Gipper Says:

    RodMunch,

Does your left arm ever get tired holding up that Tom Brady poster in your bedroom?

  45. Scotty Mack Says:

Joe’s no different than pretty much every other “pundit”, attributing wins and losses to a QB. It’s pretty ridiculous, of course; only one loss this season can be tagged to the offense (regardless of whether it was day or night (it was a game day, incidentally). Until this defense gets its act together, the offense is pretty helpless – especially with the loss of its two best weapons.

K.C. has a seriously tough defense. If Baker’s offense puts up anything north of 21 points, it’s a win for the offense. Unfortunately, they’ll surely lose if they don’t exceed 32 points, I fear. Don’t be surprised when the Chiefs put up their most points of the season against Bowles’ defense on Monday night.

  46. Bucs4EverMore Says:

Bucs Will Go Super(Bowl) Retro and Hand KC Their 1st Loss. No Crying, No Blame, Pull Together, and Have A Blast! Support Our Buccaneers, On Good Games Or Bad. They Are “Our Brothers and Our Family”. Every Game is a Battle, Numerous Injuries and Lots of Pain. Buccaneers Deserve Better Than “Griping”, They Have Earned it, With “Real” Blood, Sweat, and Tears. Go Bucs!

  47. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Rod – not the point. You always talk about the All-22 for evalution of a player and were lamenting about Baker’s Hail Mary attempt going out of the back of the end zone while Winston’s was caught. If you were fair and watched both QB’s performances against the Ravens. Baker played much better against tougher competition than winston. The “problem” is football is a team game. Baker’s defense let him down while Winston’s played well.

    Scotty Mack,
Your comment is way too grown up and correct. “Fan” is derived from the word fanatic. Very little of what “fanatics” say or write is sensible or objective. I guess it OK to have different points of view. That is, after all, what makes a market.

  49. Oneilbuc Says:

Baker Mayfield is our staring quarterback and that’s not going to change right now. So we have to support him and root for Baker Mayfield he just need to stop forcing the ball and just take his time and play. The coaches should have never stopp running the ball last week until the defense can stop it . That’s why I miss the old school coaching when you run the plays until they can stop it. But all this modern day football talk ain’t about nothing but just talk old school football still wins in the NFL or college!!

  50. richbucsfan Says:

Monday night will be bluer. It will be a bloodbath. 49-23 KC

  51. Buchen61 Says:

Baker Mayfield could literally throw for 6000 yards and 60 touchdowns and the Baker derangement crowd would find some fault with that. Theres simply no pleasing some people. Where would this team be without him this year or last. I’ll tell you… A hell of a lot worse than we are. Its nothing short of a smear campaign… He followed the goat… He has a new offensive coordinator every year… Hell he’s missing 2 of the best wide receivers in the nfl… Last year he had zero run support but yet he still succeeds. This very site prints a hit piece on him 6 days a week. Unbelievable

  52. Buchen61 Says:

Oh and chew on this… In Patrick Mahomes last 17 games he has 22 tds and 15 picks while Baker has 33 tds and 11 picks … Thats straight from stats muse…

  53. Gipper Says:

    Buchen61,

The RodMunch crowd only emerges when Baker throws interceptions, fumbles, or has a pass batted down. When Bucs win and Mayfield plays great or when an ex player says nice things about Mayfield, the anti Baker crowd is unhappy. Kind of weird that when the team beats Detroit or Philly you don’t hear a peep out of these guys.

  54. Gipper Says:

    Buchen61,

Here is the next trick. You showed some interesting data MaHomes vs Baker last 17 games, this is what you’ll get. You are a BakerBoi who says the Mayfield is better than MaHomes. It is like dealing with the big girl bully on the playground. The big girl bully is RodMunch.

  55. Buchen61 Says:

    Gipper

The numbers dont lie. Baker doesnt play defense but he does execute one of the better offenses in all of football. To many non football dumbasses sound off on this site and for the most part talk out of the asses. Somebody on another thread… Maybe you… Compared Baker to Drew Brees and i concur with that assessment.

  56. Buchen61 Says:

Rods problem is he relies to much on qbr… A rating invented by the leftist over at espn. Its way to subjective

  57. Gipper Says:

    Buchen61,

Defy RodMunch or anyone at ESPN to actually explain how a QBR is calculated. You are right it is basically subjective. Pure passer rating that includes fumbles, intercepts, td’s, and passing yards is more germane. Mayfield thru 8 games is 104.5 which is #6 among NFL QB’s.

  58. Toad bowels Says:

    Michael said
“My goodness the secondary has been making some mediocre QB’s look like HOFer’s…my grandmother in a wheelchair could get open downfield on this bunch…”

Michael, is your grandmother a free agent? We need WR help with Evans and Godwin out….

  59. Buchen61 Says:

Ive been a buc fan since inception and we’ve had a few good qbs over the years but id take Baker over Doug Williams.. Vinny Testaverde… Brad Johnson… Famous Jameis and Even Tom Brady at the end of his career. Hes a gamer and fights for the team and us fans every time he takes the field. If that makes me a Baker Boi… Oh well

  60. Debbie⁴ Says:

Sometimes it appears that when an exceptional player is showing his power, the opposing team tries to injure them, to be out for the season or end their career with illegal tackles. Chris Godwins injury comes to mind. Was 16k a big enough fine? That won’t cover surgery for Chris. Jamis Winston was horse collared. Yes, football is a dangerous sport, but hitmen do not belong in the league. How about two strikes and they are out. Increase the fine and their coaches need to be fined along with the player.
