Mike Evans Draws Flags At Historic Rate

November 27th, 2024

Productive in several ways.

Throw the ball to Mike Evans and the future Hall of Fame receiver can move the ball, not just in the conventional way.

You know how the Sage of Tampa Bay sports, Ira Kaufman, often says on his podcast that referees are so flag-happy with defensive pass interference calls that just throwing the ball in the vicinity of Evans means there’s a good chance he will pick up a first down even if he doesn’t catch the ball.

That’s because Evans, Ira says, has a knack for luring defensive backs into interference penalties.

Boy, Ira wasn’t joking.

Over at FTN Data, a stats site that focuses on fantasy sports (and is the internet home to the Father of FVOA, Aaron Schatz), they revealed a stat that surprised Joe.

When Giants corner Adoree’ Jackson got flagged for interfering with Evans late in the third quarter on Sunday, giving the Bucs a 22-yard gain and a first down, that play put Evans over the top as being the NFL career leader in drawing DPI yards.

(DPI stats have only been charted since 1979)

Evans has totaled 834 career yards in DPI flags. He was tied with Randy Moss at 812.

It’s awesome that a lot of defensive backs figure the only way they can slow Evans down is to get handsy with him.

In a weird if not twisted way, that’s respect.

    Great stat!

Fire Todd Bowles and the entire defensive coaching staff

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The definition of a beast….can’t be covered…gets mauled on most plays…many no calls….I think refs feel sorry for defenders…

  3. Lou. Says:

In his early career ME13 had a hard time with flags. Didn’t get calls, did get lots of hands-on education from (usually smaller) dbs, and sure got a bunch of laundry dropped against him. Glad to see he has turned the tables. Officially.

  4. TampabayDJ Says:

Aaron really knows how to Schatz out stats

  5. GoneGator Says:

Should count as recieving yardage. Dude is the master of the swim move.

  6. BucsBeast Says:

These “STATS” aren’t apples to apples.
The game has changed so much that it’s basically flag football now.
Let’s just be real about that.
Is the stat cool… sure. But its not the same game as it once was.

  7. BucsBeast Says:

Same goes for the season records. The season is 2 games longer now.
