Jason Licht: Offensive Line Is Among The Very Best

November 24th, 2024

So Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht was pounding his chest before today’s game, metaphorically speaking.

No Tristan Wirfs available for Sunday’s blowout win against the Giants’ stout defensive front, but Licht had no problem telling the world his offensive line is among the very best in the NFL.

Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network before kickoff, Licht made the proclamation and emphasized that Wirfs’ backup, Justin Skule, is a significantly better left tackle than right tackle and would be more than capable today.

Skule lived up to Licht’s billing, as did the rest of the O-line.

The Giants sack-happy defense, second-most in the NFL before today’s game, only hit Baker Mayfield twice and did not record a sack.

Scoreboard!

Licht also said starting left guard Ben Bredeson, his free agent pick-up, was playing strong ball and would come out extra feisty today playing against his former team. Correct, Mr. Licht.

Joe’s got all the love in the world for Licht’s work building the Tampa Bay offensive line. Anyone hear from Pro Bowl Giants nose tackle Dexter Lawrence today?

Winning in December and January is often all about offensive line play. Joe looks forward to watching it play out.

Sometimes that’s the only thing he can draft well

    What about the coaching staff??

When the Bucs win is because of the players if they don’t is on the coach.

    Ridiculous,

We have the best pair of tackles in the NFL.
Barton is learning on the job, but will soon be an elite Center.
Mauch was bad last year, bad at the beginning of this year. He’s been playing better and better since around week 5.
    Bredeson has been decent

I was really worried about the line, and voiced my concern a lot. Always loved our tackles, but starting a rookie alongside a struggling 1st year guard was a risk.
And it definitely hurt the team in the first few weeks. Barton still occasionally hurts the team. Rookies always do.
But they are playing really good right now. Justin Skule is also playing great.

Huge plus has been Cohens run scheme. Last year we ran inside, over and over.
our interior line was bad. Made no sense.
Cohen uses our outstanding Tackles in the run game to a much larger degree.
That has been really smart! Running behind Wirfs is smarter than running behind rookies! Play to your strength.

It is outstanding, watching the Bucs big tackles running over people.
Cohen has done an incredible job. Glazers/Licht better sign him to a big contract now- or he’s gonna be a top prospect for a head coaching job

Licht back on track to have the stadium named after him? The Trop? 🙂

He does typically do well drafting O-lineman. Sometimes he outsmarts even himself.

A Giant team completely in the tank might not be the best measuring stick. But it’s a start.

  5. Winny Testaverde Says:

4 of the 5 starters are 1st or 2nd round ( traded up for no less ) picks. So there’s that. They do have a nice rushing attack this year…credit for the Bucky pick in the 4th:

Zzbucs… give it up man. Are you Bowles kid? Are you tuning in to watch Bowles and Coen on the sideline? Bowles gets blamed because he gives away winnable games with poor management and conservative play calling. Of course we will celebrate the players when they play well and win, that’s who we are watching. Unfortunately the players don’t make the gameplan or call plays in crunch time, otherwise we could blame them more when they lose.

They did very well against Burns, Lawrence who is viewed as their Vea, & Thibs coming from injury.

People blame Bowles for losses, credit player and Liam when anything is good…I am sure all weak people were bringing up how they would let an unknown look like an all pro…it didn’t happen so Bowles should be given some praise for having them ready to play.

O line is very young and is still developing. Really like this group if Bucs can keep them all together. Barton doing nice job in the middle. Goedeke really solid on right side. Extra weight and upper body paying off for Mauch. Bredeson has been a pleasant surprise. Good move to keep Wirfs out today. Skule developing into a solid swing man. Hainsey good insurance plan. Overall Licht has done a fine job assembling this crew.

  10. Xristos Says:

Credit where credit is due, Skule played good today as all the OL.

Zzbucs… The coaching stuff and the players are 5-6. You can put the credit and the blame to all. I just dont think that 5-6 its something to brag about.

  11. JimBobBuc Says:

I give credit to the position coaches too. Harold Goodwin is gone after his run game job led us to a horrible running game for a few years. Sure we have better players, but Carbs (Carberry) and Pic (Picucci) have done well too. Coen’s diverse run game and motion sure helps too.

  12. zzbucs Says:

    @xristos

What you are saying is what should happen, but guess what? It does not.

Coaching staff players AND management are equally responsible for this….

During Al week people keep blaming Bowles, and forget about players underperforming and how bad is the roster in terms of depth….

I just find ridiculous blamming JUST Bowles

Football is and will always be about having a good O line and Controlling the Line of Scrimmage

Teams that win the line of Scrimmage win most games.

Turnovers are the intangible, they skew any normal stat.

I have not done any research about it, but go back through the decades and try and find a Champion that did not have a good O line, its got to be scarce as hens teeth.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  14. Dave Pear Says:

We are one competent defensive coordinator away from having an equally well regarded defensive line. Sadly they are doomed to regress into the fetal position with Coich taking their aggressiveness away.
