If You Don’t Believe In Pressure From The Edge, Don’t Grumble About Not Getting Pressure

November 6th, 2024

Talks urgency.

Joe has been, is and always will be a staunch, unwavering believer in the vital importance of an edge rusher.

Yeah, even more so than an outside linebacker pretending to be a corner.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles on the other hand? It’s pretty clear an edge rusher is way down his totem pole of his priorities.

(If an edge rush was a Bowles priority, he wouldn’t tolerate the drek he has for an edge rush currently and he likely would have camped out in Jason Licht’s office until the AC/DC-loving Bucs general manager broke down and got a new one.)

So today when asked about his fourth-down defense, which isn’t so good, Bowles sort of griped about the lack of pressure on quarterbacks as part of the problem.

“Part of the time, we got pressure and we didn’t cover the right way,” Bowles said. “Part of the time, we covered long enough, and didn’t get any pressure. It’s a combination of both.

“We’ve got to make plays and get off the field. There’s got to be an urgency. There is an urgency – we play hard, we’ve just got to play smart and we’ve got to understand things in those situations.”

“Urgency?” Really? “Urgency?” Where was this newfound desire for urgency before yesterday’s NFL trade deadline?

Don’t give Joe this song-and-dance about how long it would take to train new players in order to get them on the field. Does Mike Tomlin seem like he can’t coach guys up in a few days to get them ready? Andy Reid? John Harbaugh? Hell, even Dan Quinn?

“Urgency?” For that to come from someone who was publicly dismissive if not ambivalent on the importance of going out and adding a player or two to make the team better — to prepare for a stretch run — well, Joe simply cannot take this comment seriously.

And maybe if there was a little “urgency” about signing edge rush help, then Bowles wouldn’t have to worry so much about a lack of pressure on quarterbacks.

We had 4 sacks against Mahomes and company.

Is it my imagination or does our pass rush seem to fade as the game goes on? It starts strong, disciplined, etc.. then peters out in the 2nd half. Not sure tho, don’t have the numbers.

GoneGator … ‘Is it my imagination or does our pass rush seem to fade as the game goes on?’

Let’s see, Vea had 2 sacks … one at 10:06 of the 1st qtr & the other at 8:40 of the 1st qtr. Kancey had 1 sack at 0:10 left in the 2nd qtr & another at 11:23 of the 3rd qtr.

Looks like they were pretty well spreead out, except that Vea got both of his in a very short time span (less than 2 minutes). nonetheless, a sack is still a sack.

I am definitely in your camp which brings us to the point of why JTMs is even on the field because he doesn’t have a clue of how to rush the passer and keep contain on him. On Mahomes roll out TD JTMS takes an outside rush and blows by Mahomes and he just escape to the right rolls out throws the dinky 5 yd TD pass. with JTMs 10 yards behind him. GEEEESH. Try a spin move you idiot when you get to his level. I’d as soon see Marquesst Watts or Jose Ramirez, who is always listed as inactive on game day, give it a shot. At least they have more vigor and fight in them than the Fred Astire graduate. Get him out now and surrender to the idea that he will ever be a force in the NFL and is just another version of Noah Spence.

JTS has started 9 games and has 1 sack. Are we supposed to feel sorry for Bowles when he keeps trotting a guy out there to start who has 1 sack? Please.

  5. Mike C Says:

When you call zone 75% of the time it does not matter if you have the all Madden team. QBs these days can eat a zone alive, back in todds day you could grab and interfere and it wouldn’t be called, and when you can do that it makes zone defense viable, but right now in today’s NFL it doesn’t work Todd, adapt or die.

  6. Mac Says:

I hate his zone defense and it’s the death of this and last year’s team. Bump the damn receivers and stop playing 7 yards off. His defense is outdated and makes no adjustments. Please foe the love of God Licht move on from this at seasons end. The fans have had enoigh!

  7. White Tiger Says:

The Bucs got 4 sacks on Mahomes… that’s not nothing…

  8. Bosch Says:

Bowles speak, again. Just blowing smoke up everyone’s sphincter. The Glazers need to sit him down during the bye and demand he tell them what he is going to do to fix the defensed and lose the double talk

  9. DungyDance Says:

Sounds like Mike Edwards will become available. And Shaq obviously is still available. We made no trades, as usual. Any chance we sign one of these guys?

  10. Pewter Power Says:

4 sacks out off like 40-50 plays doesn’t really mean much. Pressure would matter if it’s relentless always in your face or quarterback hits but 4 sacks and the other plays guys are wide open or running for 5 yards a pop that’s not defense

  11. JimBobBuc Says:

Joe is talking about pressures and sacks, but Bowles actually said the pass rush AND the pass coverage both sucked at times. Did ANY defensive player or group have a good game?

  12. Commander Says:

When Bowles was first hired didn’t he play press man coverage almost exclusively. Now he plays quarters zone prevent defence exclusively.

  13. Ra'Shad Says:

Raheem Morris cut down Juddon’s playing time because he wasn’t producing sacks. The result of that decision was his back-ups got sacks. Who would have ever thought that would happen.
