Choosing The Bucs’ MVP

November 14th, 2024

MVP?

Just so Joe can set the standard here, MVP is an acronym for “Most Valuable Player.”

Joe defines that as a player the Bucs couldn’t win without. Hence the word “valuable.”

Take a guy off the field and the team can’t function properly.

Over at ESPN, the mouse outfit asked each of its NFL beat writers to pick a team MVP that isn’t a quarterback. For the Bucs, Jenna Laine selected running back Bucky Irving.

Irving isn’t even considered RB1 on this team — Rachaad White is — and his 5.1 yards per rush is sixth best in the league among running backs. His 27.1% first downs per rush is fourth best at the position. With Pro Bowlers Mike Evans (hamstring) and Chris Godwin (ankle) out with injuries, Irving has been an unsung hero, even if it hasn’t translated into wins over the past four weeks.

Ordinarily, it would be hard to argue with Laine’s selection. Without Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, he may be the best skill position player.

However, remember the word “valuable” here.

Exactly how valuable is a backup running back? Does Joe think Irving should start? No doubt. Does Joe think Irving is the Bucs’ best back? Probably (would like to give Sean Tucker a few more spins around the block).

Still, Irving is not a starter. That’s just the cold, hard truth. It may be a mistake, but he’s still not the RB1 as Laine points out.

And when the Bucs needed a touchdown to take the lead late against the defending NFC champs last Sunday, where was Irving? On the bench.

Should Irving have been on the field? Absolutely. But he wasn’t. Rachaad White was.

So Joe just cannot refer to a guy who the coaching staff doesn’t even think is a starter as the most valuable player.

So who would Joe select as MVP whose name is not “Baker Mayfield?” It is a toss-up between Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, and the way Godwin was playing until he got hurt, Joe’s leaning toward Godwin.

The Bucs actually were making a frantic comeback against Baltimore with him. And the Bucs haven’t won a game since he got hurt. That says a lot.

(Joe gave some consideration to Vita Vea).

Id probably have said Godwin as well. Although missing Godeke earlier in season showed the importance of having a good tackle at either end of the line. If there’s no one to stop the pass rush its hard to complete a pass.

I was very pissed when Bucky didn’t get the ball at the end of that 49ers game and I was also upset that Tucker didn’t get any carries. I believe we would have won that game if it was the Buck and Tuck show. I also think McMillan is an injury prone bust, he’s a practice warrior and when it’s time for real games he goes turtle. He needs to emerge or he’s going to be another whipping boy for the fans.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

I don’t understand why there’s even a discussion about who the Bucs’ MVP is when Baker Mayfield is having the career year that he is. Look no further than to the guy handling the ball on virtually every play.

Godwin was certainly on his way to becoming our season’s MVP. I think Cade Otton should also deserve some consideration because of the contributions he has made recently.

I do think our last game was the most poorly called by Coen. It left me scratching my head in frustration.

    Go bucs!

  5. DBS Says:

It says that isn’t a QB. They could not and did not without him against the 49ers. Using White proved it. The defense nobody is MVP. Only possibility may be LVD trying to cover for everyone.

“Should Irving have been on the field? Absolutely. But he wasn’t. Rachaad White was.” Darn!! Darn!! Darn!! Darn!! Darn!! – Signed: Herman Munster.

  7. Tucker Says:

Well the question was who do you think is the team’s MVP who is not a QB, that’s why Baker wasn’t mentioned DR. At this point maybe otton I can’t pick a wr that’s hurt cuz they are not even playing right now so how can they be an MVP.

  8. Ufcguy32 Says:

Mvp on.a 4 and 6 team…..literally who gives a sht. It’s like being the best of the worst or the least loser in the bunch. I can’t get with it. I refuse to let this team put on some rose color glasses. They do that enough on their own especially after a win….we will get trounced nc this team had an ego problem. Idk why but it’s always been an issue they think they can just show up and that’s enough. Refer to it as mentally tough or whatever. We don’t seem to learn our lessons…..ever. history repeats itself

  9. Tony Says:

The fans should be the MVP for putting up with all of this.

  10. bucnjim Says:

Have to give it to Goedeke! The Bucs aren’t the same team without him. Wirfs has done a great job, but not quite what he did last year. The whole offensive line could be considered since they are the ones keep us in games.

  11. A Bucs Fan Says:

    1. Baker
    2. Chris Godwin
    3. Cade Otton
    4. Bucky

Queen of the fat girl pageant. Who cares? If you have to choose it’s the Oline.

  13. Nick2 Says:

My my only gripe Customer service that got under control didn’t work, but she said mama tried to help her She got out and we put all that in there and 100 left over with up cancel cancel cancel go back order order with Ian Cohen‘s offense is that he doesn’t utilize his best running backs there’s no way Bucky Irving should not be starting over Rashad White and That last girl at the goal line was a crime that Rashad White touch the ball for no gain instead of Bucky Irving could’ve run it in with four shots. Then you have Sean Tucker Possibly the best running back on the team sitting on the bench every game? Bowles sits with his hands tied because he doesn’t know a head coach
