Bucs Have Wasted Good Offense, Quarterback Play

November 5th, 2024

When is the last time a team had a losing record through nine games after throwing 23 touchdown passes against nine interceptions — with a strong running game?

Joe will guess it’s never happened in the history of the NFL until now.

But that’s where the Bucs sit — with a 4-5 record. (And don’t expect the Bucs’ official stats folks to look that stat up.)

Tampa Bay is getting good quarterback play and the running game is among the NFL’s best, averaging five yards per carry tonight in the overtime loss to the Chiefs.

The offense put up 24 points on the mighty Chiefs tonight. That had only happened one other time this season, when the Bengals scored 25 against Kansas City in Week 2. But it wasn’t good enough.

It’s just so sad how the Bucs have transformed strong offense this season into a losing record.

Tampa Bay is averaging 29 points per game. You can count on one hand how many times a team has scored at that pace through an entire season and missed the playoffs.

Yes, the Bucs have eight games remaining and a soft schedule through their final seven games, but none of that will matter if the defense can’t find its way to playing average football.

It’s not too much to ask, especially when the offense has done its part.

    go get Bill Belichick

  2. StormyInFl Says:

Because their head coach/dc is a gutless, clueless buffoon.

    Fire Bowles

    Promote Coen

Flush the rest of this incompetent defensive coaching staff next offseason.

  3. Regulator16 Says:

Tonight was a wasted hard fought game by a HC who is a coward. Grow a pair Bowles. I could respect losing trying to win. But losing by trying to just tie…at Arrowhead…vs defending champs…last undefeated team? PATHETIC. I feel bad for these players tonight.

  4. OR Buc Says:

    Eff. Losing like that sux

  5. Rod Munch Says:

The defense is destroyed by injuries – that’s why not going for 2 was one of the stupidest, most cowardly tiny ball Bowles moments ever. What an idiot.

  6. Todd Says:

    OT rules suck.

This is the NFL, not Junior High.

They need to fix this idiocy.

  7. LANshark Says:

3 of the 4 teams we’ve beaten are among the best teams in the NFL right now (Washington, Detroit, and Philly). And we should have beaten KC.

This team is way better than the record…. and if there were less injuries, would be 6-3 or better.

The BS overtime rules in the NFL don’t help. A coin flip should not determine who wins the game.

  8. Tye Says:

Bowels is just a curse As HC and firing him would NOT be a bad thing!
Should NOT be hard to upgrade from Bowels at HC!!!

  9. Kenton Smith Says:

I’m starting to think that the league ought to have different OT rules. That’s twice we haven’t even had a chance. Hurts when it happens to you. I’m still not giving up on the season. But next year we should spend every draft pick on defense. Guys fought but a few of those guys shouldn’t be starters in the NFL. Worst thing we could do is replace coaches. Players win games and we need a few more players.

  10. Josh Says:

Is it just me or are these losses more painful than normal….

  11. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

Theplain truth is Tampa has lost 4 games because of Bowles they could have won. In my opinion and I hate to say it because I think Todd Bowles is a good person, he is a DEI hire. The time out & not goign for 2 are amongst the stupidist decisions ever by a Head Coach. Liam Coen could have gotten the wide receivers involved but e coached scared for the second time this season. You don’t run the ball on first down when you need a decent with a few minutes left in the game
Tampa Bay should change the teams name to the Fraidy Cats.

  12. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I cannot help but think that if wee had Evans and Godwin playing, we would have won in regulation.

The Chiefs are the best in the NFL atm.

Coming off a loss is always hard, and the comments are always negative. But there were good things in this game too.

Since there is almost no chance the Glazers fire Bowles during the season, I see no reason to even think about it at this point.

I would love to get Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels in to run the team…I don’t care if we are called Patriots South…so long as we win.

But we’ll have to wait and hope the Saints don’t get them.

The good news is that we have better players overall than the Saints. So Bill might prefer Tampa.

  13. Bucben1961 Says:

It’s obvious that Toilet Bowles time is up…I’m with Rod…no defense …you go for the 2 win or lose. No excuses

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Also, keep in mind that we didn’t address the pass rush enough in the draft because Licht was building around Baker Mayfield. I think that was the smart call, but it meant neglecting the defense for a year.

By next year, the OL will be really good. The running game will be really good. Our young WRs will be better.

    Otton is doing great.

Next draft can go almost entirely on defense.

  15. Gipper Says:

Yes Bucs have been competitive against good teams this year but this team does not have a defense that can get this team anywhere in the playoffs. Same was true last year when Baker brought the team back several times to lead in final minutes only to have defense cough up points to blow games. You win with players and Bucs don’t have them on defense. Finally, when you are missing the greatest receiving duo in the league, it is hard to overcome.

  16. FortMyersDave Says:

Todd has worn out his welcome. The Glazers need to act, preferably during the bye week after CMC gashes his defense.

  17. Anthony Says:

Whoever wrote this article is ignorant

  18. heyjude Says:

Like many, very disappointed and speechless. However, it was a close game and we saw many positive attributes coming from the Bucs. We have a good team and we are almost there. This was a close game, in OT, against a team that is undefeated, and it was on their field on a Monday Night. I think we did so much better than what many said we would do.

Agree with Kenton about the OT rules. We have been cheated out twice now.

I could be wrong, but the Glazers are not going to fire Todd yet. And who would we get? Another coach that was fired. And would the new HC keep Coen since they bring in their own staff. Yes, Coen is doing well but he hasn’t been in this position a full season yet.

  19. Ann Creel Says:

I really don’t understand why the lack of fairness in overtime. If the Bucs had scored the touchdown for the win, I’d still feel the same way. It’s told that both teams will get to possess the ball unless there is a touchdown. Both teams equally fought to get to OT so we can’t it be played more fairly? I get the game can’t go on forever but there has to be better ideas on this. That’s now 2 games in OT the Bucs never got a chance to get a touchdown all because of a coin toss.

  20. Blows sux Says:

    #CoenForHC/OC
    #SalehForDC

ThisTeam needs a leader with a desire to win and blows ain’t it

Or ticket sales will plummet in 2025

  21. Coltol Says:

Chiefs converted 66% of third downs and had almost 41 minutes in time of possession. Scoring 24 points is even more impressive given those stats.
