Brad Johnson: Baker Mayfield Can Win A Super Bowl

November 19th, 2024

In Joe’s mind, there are only two kinds of quarterbacks: guys with enough game to win a Super Bowl and the rest of the field.

Baker Mayfield can win a Super Bowl. That was the message yesterday from the Bucs’ first Super Bowl-winning quarterback, Brad Johnson.

“No doubt about it,” Johnson said of Mayfield’s championship potential.

Johnson was a guest of WDAE radio fill-in host Rock Riley.

“[Mayfield] has got all the skill set. He was the first pick of the draft. He’s been through adversity. He’s had to live it; he’s had to bounce from a couple of different teams and now he’s found his home. You know what I mean? He produces and he gets the most out of the players around him. …. He’s going to be around a long time, so I would jump on the bandwagon. But until you do it, you haven’t done.”

Joe will note that Johnson was in the house nine days ago at the Bucs-49ers game, and he was seen on the field.

Johnson added that he likes the gameday leadership and energy he sees from Mayfield.

  1. Dave Pear Says:

He definitely can. Just needs a real head coach and a real defensive coordinator so that he doesn’t feel like he has to be a hero every damn play to outscore the Cover Who atrocity on the other side of the ball.

  2. Tye Says:

I agree Mayfield has the skills to win. SB, just not a HC to get him there….

    1 absolute is certain….
The day is quickly approaching that the owners will finally realize Bowels as HC was a colossal mistake …

  3. Hodad Says:

If Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer can win a superbowl, so can Baker. Those two QBs have something Baker doesn’t have, a defense. That’s on Todd.

  4. Buc1976 Says:

These Buc fans that are calling for the firing of Todd Bowles, are the same ones who constantly wanted Tony Dungy fired. Todd Bowles is a good coach, and I hope he stays for a long time! 1976 Buc Fan for life!

  5. BuckyBuc Says:

He can but our defense needs to be LIGHTS OUT

  6. BallHawk75 Says:

Flush the Bowels movement and he might have a chance.

Otherwise this is just another fluff piece from Joe.

No one with above a 60 IQ believes this can happen with the current HC.

We are wasting valuable years on a DEI hire that will never change his ways.

A High School coach would have better instincts.

  7. Escobar Says:

@Ballhawks75 that’s a real messed up and ignorant comment. DEI hire? That’s a Super Bowl winning DC you’re talking about, have you ever played or coached on an NFL level? If not, then you have no right to be that critical. Is Bowles an average coach? Sure, but let’s not be emotional & disrespectful like you are

  8. Crickett Baker Says:

    Thanks Escobar.

  9. BucVoyager Says:

Tony Dungy is a great man and was a great coach. He needed to be fired after the stench his offenses put up on the field. Gruden came in and did just enough tweaks on offense to get a Super Bowl.

People who say Gruden won with Dungy’s team forget that Gruden’s former team was also on the field and they had the # 1 offense that year. It takes both sides to get a ring and we learned that when we beat the Chiefs.

  10. heyjude Says:

Right on Brad Johnson! Yes, Baker can win a SB too. Love it! So glad to hear about Rock Riley filling in at WDAE.

  11. GoneGator Says:

    @Ballsack75 and @Dave Pear

    Todd says suck his nuts.

  12. First Name Greatest Says:

Can’t win a Super Bowl with a coward as head coach

Can’t win a Super Bowl with a coach who doesn’t trust his best unit to win the game

Can’t win a Super Bowl with a coach who mis manages the clock and can’t make adjustments

Todd Blows is not a Super Bowl Head Coach

  13. Buc4evr Says:

Not with Bowles, the guy makes stupid in game decisions on close games. He has helped lose 4 games this season. No matter what Baker does to win, Bowles will find a way to screw things up.

  14. Gipper Says:

Well, we have gone from Baker being a “middling, journeyman, washout” to a genuine SB QB ratified not by couch potato bloggers but by SB winning QB’s. Maybe the same couch potatoes should relax and see if Bowles gets the team to a 10-7 finish this year.

  15. BallHawk75 Says:

    @Escobar

Why else would you hijack the franchise by not stepping down until it was too late to find a suitable replacement?

The guy was 26-41 coming in as a HC. Now he is 47-64 as a HC. 48-66 if you include the playoffs.

Everyone knows how woke the NFL is these days. Look no further than the Rooney rule. That’s affirmative action.

For the record, I care not what color anyone is, if they get the job done that’s what counts.

Had Brady and Gronk not come to Tampa, there is no 2nd title. Bowles was just in the right place.

  16. Allbuccedup Says:

Fire Bowles hire Mike Vrabel or Robert Saleh as head coach make Liam Coen assistant head coach with a big raise.

  17. Buchen61 Says:

Potato potado Todds not the answer and for everyone waiting for the Bucs to finish 10-7 and Todd saving the season are asking for a Christmas miracle

  18. Buchen61 Says:

And Mike Vrabel woild be an excellent place to start fir a replacement. 6 year recird 54-45 and 5-2 playoffs

  19. ocala Says:

Coach Bowles is a nice man, but his defense does not work in today’s NFL. Bucs clearly need to move on from him. This roster is very good though, so I do expect them to make a strong run to end the season in spite of his defense.

  20. Joshua Says:

If the Bucs finish 11-6 or even 9-8 it will be “in spite” of Bowles dude is cooked and if he’s not gone the franchise is cooked.. this is 2024 people don’t put up watching turd ball anymore…

  21. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Stop with the rah rah stuff. Let’s get real, Baker needs everything to be perfect to win. He can’t read defenses so never plays well against good ones. He is just as likely to throw a game losing int than he is to throw a game winning td. He’s not winning one this year that’s for sure. He’s ice skating up hill with no receivers, no defense and a sorry head coach with no heart

  22. J.J. Says:

Who said it? Brady or Johnson? I just saw tge same quote attributed to Vrady on twitter.

  23. Durango 95 Says:

Baker is plenty good enough to win the big one. But as most know he needs even a little help from the defense. Which won’t happen while Bowles is running the show. Support for Bowles is dwindling as the excuses are starting to pile up from the few remaining stragglers.

If they had a better gm. (can u believe that one.)
    If they had less injuries
    If they had better communication
If they had an offense that averaged 45 ppg.

It never ends. Now Ira’s making it upon on the fly.
    Good grief.

  24. DBS Says:

Where did Brad say he could win it this year? If I remember the defense totally shut down Mahomes for Brady in our last Super Bowl.

  25. Pewter Power Says:

Of course he can win a Super Bowl but not with Todd cover zero blitz Bowles as head coach. BA/Brady probably get another championships if they get to that second Super Bowl

  26. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Ballhawk I think u r a moron it is more like brady & gronk showed up here at the rite time all the prices were in pl.why do u think they came aboard moron, Baker & bucs needed each other that is the diff. U r not a ball hawk u r a bs know it all

  27. Les Says:

Baker has the skils and the passion .no doubt !^but I agree with others we need a new coach that motivates and plays to win ! A defence coach for sure .

Dude — if Dungy had not been fired, that HOF roster would never have won a Super Bowl. Tony learned, went to the Colts and Manning and won his SB because he had a ready-built offense, something he was a failure at.

Fast forward to now. Your “good coach” has a losing record with two NFL franchises, a monumental feat, probably not accomplished since the 1970s. He makes the wrong in-game decision every time. He has neither Tony’s acumen for defense, and even less on offense (which is saying something since Tony was a zero on offense).

Whatever metric you want to use, “good coach” does not apply to the guy you are defending. And he can’t defend anything.
