Baker Mayfield In Good Company With So Many Short Passes

A weekly theme for Joe is pointing out how the Bucs are a dink-and-dunk offense.
Normally, this would irk Joe. But the offense is not why the Bucs are a bad team at 4-6. It’s the defense.
With the exception of one game, Joe has been impressed. That one game came last week against San Francisco. So far, that has been Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen’s lone blemish.
The Bucs offense wasn’t just dink-and-dunk last weekend, it was prehistoric.
A big reason for being largely run-and-throw-short is, of course, the injuries to Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Joe assumes another reason Baker Mayfield doesn’t throw many long passes is the lone guy who can stretch the field, Trey Palmer, has been close to invisible this year.
His targets are less than half of what he had this time last year after 10 games.
So is throwing short so bad?
Well, four quarterbacks have close to the same low percentage of catchable deep passes as Mayfield, per FTNData. Deshaun Watson and Andy Dalton are two. That’s bad. Joe Burrow (!) and Pat Mahomes are the other two. That’s very good.

Hey Joe, best leave the offense alone, the offense , is working better than it has in a few years and is light years ahead of the defense, which is soooo hard to even watch. Btw saw on Game View, nfl channel the other day a commentator saying “Kirt Counsins only play well against the Bucs”. There’s a line for you to check out

IMO, Coen went with quick passes vs 49ers due to the injury to Wirfs. Get the ball out fast or it would be a repeat of the first game we lost our RT. How many sacks did the Lions have that game? Baker was lucky he did not get hurt – THAT the Bucs cannot afford.

@David Kilmer – I am pretty sure the Joes have already covered Cousins only really being any good against us. 8 of his 17 TDs and 785 of his 2634 passing yards were against us. The only other team he threw more than 2 tds against was Dallas.

Palmer was wide-arse open one play last week and Baker overthrew him. I think it’s the timing. With the exception of Shepard, Mayfield hasn’t worked that much with the other WRs. He was totally synced with Evans and Godwin. Not so much with the others.

1-6 in one score games means the offense is another part of the problem.

Don’t know where we dredged up BallHawk75. Have a feeling he is Trask to the Future with another screen name. Have to wonder about this lunatic. Mayfield is leading the NFL in TD passes, top 5 in PY, completing 70% of his passes, and otherwise leading a high powered offense minus ME13 and CG. Some of these guys just want attention. Probably best to just ignore them.
