Baker Mayfield-Cade Otton Connection Developed

November 1st, 2024

Bucs OC Liam Coen likes the bond developed between Baker Mayfield and Cade Otton.

This is sure a good sign.

Of course, when Mike Evans and Chris Godwin were both healthy, the Bucs’ passing offense ran through them. That’s just common sense. One guy is a future Hall of Fame receiver. The other is a Pro Bowl receiver. Only a fool would craft an offense that wouldn’t highlight those two.

But now that Evans and Godwin aren’t available, Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen has had to improvise.

One new premier target for Baker Mayfield has been tight end Cade Otton. He had mostly blocked and helped clear lanes for Evans and Godwin, but now Otton is more of a primary target.

And Otton has risen to the occasion as with dominant numbers the past two weeks for a tight end.

Today, Coen lauded Otton for stepping up and taking serious punishment yet weathering the hits and producing.

In fact, Coen noted a reason Otton has put up really good numbers is he developed a chemistry with Mayfield. That’s good to hear because in the past, when Bucs tight ends had chemistry with their quarterbacks, the offense hummed.

Tom Brady and foot-rubbing tight end Rob Gronkowski had a bond on and off the field. When Gronk wasn’t on the field, the Bucs offense noticeably seemed to drag.

When the Bucs paired Cam Brate with America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, the Bucs had one of the better offenses in the league.

Joe remembers former Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter talking about the chemistry Brate and Jameis had. Koetter noted that chemistry between a quarterback and a tight end is something that comes naturally and often cannot be coached. Koetter said he noticed it the first time Brate caught passes from Jameis in practice.

So of all the good things that Otton is doing of late, having formed a chemistry with Mayfield is really a good sign.

Let’s just not expose Cade to bone crushing hits or else we will be hoping for a Mayfield/Kieft connection to save the offense

KC this year hasn’t been all that good vs TE’s, so Otton should have a big day.

Except the Chiefs, on defense, always tend to focus on taking one thing away from you. If the Chiefs decide that one thing is Otton, he might not do much.

Personally I assume the one thing will be the running game – because they want Baker to have to beat them with all the scrub WRs, but we shall see.

One thing is for certain, this is the 2nd best defense the Bucs will play this year, behind only the Broncos that I think might be the best defense in football.

So happy to hear this. Otton has reminded me of Brate for awhile now. Good to have that vibe going on.

Got a kick out of reading “America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.” Good one, Joe!

Cade Otton is a good, smart football player.. And he’s got pretty good hands.
I thought he did have too many drops, last year.. But he seems to be back on track this year.

Yeah we’ve got a good thing going with Otten, you could see it last year. No surprise. Now Mayfield needs to develop that chemistry with all the running backs and tight ends. Anyone who catches passes between 10-15 yards. Forget about wide receivers. Mayfield can’t throw it that far.

this isnt raheem chiefs will make palmer and mcmillan beat them

Agree Rod the Chiefs and Broncos look like the top defenses in the league. Makes that loss sting a bit less… until you remember how awful defense was against a middling rookie. Little did we know that was a preview of the defense to come.

Just seems like the entire league caught up to Bowles scheme after week 2… even with having Winfield Vea and Kancey back. Britt isn’t a starter, Whitehead has looked pedestrian at best, and our pass rush is MIA for too much of every game. I’ve been saying all season the offense has to score 30+ to have a chance.

Moron alert …….Yeah we’ve got a good thing going with Otten, you could see it last year. No surprise. Now Mayfield needs to develop that chemistry with all the running backs and tight ends. Anyone who catches passes between 10-15 yards. Forget about wide receivers. Mayfield can’t throw it that far. Kenton is a moron 😂 😂

Richierich I’ve been called worse. But obviously you don’t read this site often or you’d understand my tongue in cheek.
