Bad News Regarding Zyon McCollum?

November 18th, 2024

So Bucs starting cornerback Zyon McCollum, the team’s best corner this season, left last week’s game against the 49ers with a hamstring injury.

Apparently, it was a situation he tried to play through unsuccessfully, per Todd Bowles.

Since then, the Bucs re-signed versatile defensive back Mike Edwards and fellow starting cornerback Jamel Dean says he ready to return to the lineup at full strength.

Today, the Bucs made another move in their defensive backfield, promoting cornerback Troy Hill to the active roster from the practice squad. (They also waived safety Kaevon “I’m Chasing You” Merriweather).

Yes, it’s that Troy Hill, the veteran of the Bengals, Rams, Browns and Panthers. He’s got 60 career starts at 33 years old.

So Joe has to wonder. Why promote Hill if McCollum’s hamstring is no big deal and healed over the bye week?

Unfortunately, Joe is assuming McCollum isn’t ready and Hill will be active on Sunday against the Giants.

Joe can’t claim to be an expert on Hill’s play, but Joe will guess there’s a solid chance he’s better than current backups Josh Hayes and Tyrek Funderburk.

Conditioning conditioning conditioning will prevent hamstring injuries!!!!!

  2. Bucswin? Says:

    Pliability. Remember TB12.

  3. Matthew L. Cole Says:

I think it is more that they can see Funderburk and Hayes are not quite ready.

Allbuccedup: So will being an unathletic couch jockey. Hard to pull a hammy waiting for someone to bring you another beer.

  5. NJbucs23 Says:

Bucs need to incorporate pilates and barre if they already don’t. Those workouts are intense and damn do they work. The Bucs need to bring in injury preventive workouts.

  6. Buctank Says:

No need to promote hill to active roster just because of Zyon… they would have just elevated him. So because they made this overall move this is more about whoever is behind the starteds

  7. 941bucsfan Says:

Hill will replace funderburk, once zyon is officially good for sunday and once jamel dean is activated to roster.

  8. Bartow Buc Says:

Bringing veteran leadership into the defensive backfield sounds like very smart and forward thinking by coach Bowles !!

Go Bucs !! Beat the Giants !! No more losses !!

“So Joe has to wonder. Why promote Hill”

Watching Hayes and Funderburk get destroyed over and over again should by why you’d bring up Hill and hopefully not see those two in the game. Just wonder about Hill and his speed, as Bowles seems to have a fascination with guys who are too slow to play in the NFL.

  10. Hearty Dikerson Says:

The amount of hamstring injuries on this team is absurd. It’s gotten to the point where players can’t be trusted to stretch properly themselves and need a quality control coach dedicated to ensuring they’re stretching enough before games and practices.

  11. Mike Johnson Says:

Watch the Giants kick our Butts.

  12. Proudbucsfan Says:

It’s disgusting the lack of discipline on the defensive side of the ball. Who’s taking the blame ? This Team will never reach its potential without the right motivation.

  13. Tucker Says:

Hamstring injuries have always been a thing around the NFL settle down it’s the nature of the position.

“better than current backups Josh Hayes and Tyrek Funderburk.”

Wow Joe this makes me wonder why the heck Hayes was even on the roster out of camp. Neither of these guys was ready for the NFL. Funderburk at least had some up side to him.

All this should have been setting off all kinds of alarms around One Buc Place beginning in camp! Now suddenly we need to bring a 33 year old up from the dead…oops… practice squad?

This is on Todd plain and simple. This has been an issue since last year and he did little or nothing to address it reminds me of his slow reaction to Diva being a liability. He just plain refused to act until it was way late in the season. That failure to act is still hurting this team!

    Go Bucs!

  15. Dave Pear Says:

Said it a gazillion times. You could have an all HOF defensive backfield. They would give up 400 yards passing in this comical defense.

  16. Dave Pear Says:

Off topic – watching Cowgirls Texans. Diva White now plays lousy lass defense for DeMeco Ryan’s.

When did he get so fat? He looks like he’s playing at 270.

  17. heyjude Says:

The Troy Hill move is solid thinking from Bowles. Zyon needs to make sure the hamstring is better. The chances of re-injuring when returning too soon are high. The Bucs seem to be preparing for what ifs. Love it!

Agree with NJbucs23 about Pilates/Preventive workouts, as well as other comments about the hamstrings. How about hot yoga? It works on the mindset and body. Not as hard as pilates, but good for flexibility. And can be done outside in the heat.

no danny dimes……….it’s tommy devito at quarterback

  19. D Cone Says:

When the receivers are practicing pass routes of ten yards or less and the defense is practicing against it then I am not surprised when defenders have to expose their legs to muscle movement (like long strides over distance) during games that they are not accustom to.

Defense would be better served practicing against the scout team and having Trask throwing deep routes.
