Tristan Wirfs Holding Call Mocked By Bill Belichick

October 23rd, 2024

The Manningcast can be a really fun resource for Xs and Os perspective on a particular play, and the whole show has kicked up a notch from that perspective with Bill Belicheat joining Eli and Peyton Manning this year.

Monday night, the Bucs scored a second touchdown early in the game, a sweet Baker Mayfield scramble-and-throw in the red zone to Chris Godwin. But no, Tristan Wirfs was called for holding, which is about as common as Joe ordering the “vegetable of the day” versus tater tots.

The touchdown was taken off the board. Wirfs was livid. And Bill Belicheat was asked to scrutinize the replay.

“Yeah, yeah, as defensive coach, I’d like to have had a couple of those holding calls. That would have been nice,” Belichick said.

Eli Manning scoffed at the call before Belichick’s take. “He’s not holding. The [defender’s] not even doing anything.”

And so it was.

Instead of leading 14-0, the Bucs took a 10-0 lead. In theory, those four points would have stopped Chris Godwin’s ugly injury from being the byproduct of a miracle chase.

Heartbreaking events like that seem to rattle Mayfield, we’ve seen it 2 weeks in a row where he starts throwing pics right after something like that happens

  2. Leopold Stotch Says:

Yeah I thought that holding call was crap too. I sure as heck didn’t see anything. Ridiculous

  3. Casual Observer Says:

I, too, though it was a truly terrible call at the time.

  4. Josh Says:

Yeah the holding call was atrocious but we got a make up call the following drive when Lamar ran it in just couldn’t capitalize on it like the Ravens did with there screen pass after there holding call. The refs didn’t screw the Bucs this game it was the defense AGAIN… First quarter looked great after that the defense looked flat honestly after the Mike Evans Injury is when it all went downhill…

  5. Viktor Vaughn Says:

Hopefully this controversial comment isn’t removed, but we are going to likely be paying in penalties for the Brady advantage that we had. There have been a ton of examples of nonsense penalties called against us since last season and it’s happened quite a lot this season already. The game at KC is gonna be brutal, refereeing-wise.

  6. Bartow Buc Says:

I’m glad you brought this up Joe because I was really upset about that Game Changing Terrible holding call that turned the momentum of the game around and cost us four points !
Tristen Wirfs never holds ! That was textbook blocking not holding. Without that call I believe we would have won that game !
In addition to the four points we were denied, Baker put the ball in Evans hands and McMillans hands in the end zone both were dropped. A 55 yard field goal was missed by a hair
So if the terrible holding call had not been called and just one of this TD drops had been caught, the Bus win that game.

    Go Bucs !! L G !!

  7. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Beej to Mayfields credit he didn’t fold against the Stanks like he did against the Crows

  8. Baker Bowl Says:

Viktor – Genuinely curious why you think that? I don’t recall an outrageous amount of missed/bad calls against us this season, certainly not enough to think there’s a vendetta against us. Penalties happen and we’ve been pretty beat up on the OLine all season which could account for some of those flags.

  9. LakelandBuc Says:

NFL officials miss a lot of calls, strong teams overcome their oversight. There were the exact same phantom holding call against the Ravens, they overcome theirs, scored another TD on the next play.

That’s the mark of a great team

  10. MelvinJunior Says:

Yep. You factor in the Mike Evans drop and you’re prob talking about a whole different ballgame.

  11. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Love how people talk about if if if in order to insulate their fanboi interest from scrutiny. Not to pick on Mayfield but IF he hadn’t thrown those 2 horrible picks and IF he hadn’t chosen not to throw to an open Bucky near the goal line then maybe……..

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

A totally BS call for sure…

I don’t think it’s to protect fanboy interest (at least it isn’t for me) but to have more context. Obviously there were 2 horrendous picks from Baker but under the circumstance, you can speculate how it would’ve been a completely different game. Hindsight is always 20/20 but you need the whole picture to realize what actually went wrong and how it affected the game. Baker is to blame for the turnovers for sure, but you also have to acknowledge a great play from the defensive perspective.

Now, I will agree that saying what if we score AFTER the picks is absurd and not relevant to anything.

  14. PSL Bob Says:

That play was a killer, as was the dropped pass by Evans in the end zone. The ball was placed perfectly in his hands. I can only imagine that the pain from his hamstring problem was so intense, he lost focus. The point being, we had a couple of opportunities to score another TD in the first quarter that were either squandered or taken away by the refs. Baker seems to fall off his game after something like that happens. He eventually regains his composure, but he’s got to get over these mental lapses when things start going south. This has happened in several games now.

  15. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Season-altering call. No Mike Evans or Chris Godwin injuries if this was called correctly. Ravens playing more on their heels the rest of the game as well.

  16. chris l Says:

the score being 21-7 instead of 14-10 could have prevented a lot of things from happening.

  17. David Says:

Should have been 14–0 at that point. At the very least, halftime should have been 17–10. The interception in the end zone and that holding call changed everything

  18. First Last Says:

Its almost as if mentally Baker just thinks “well Im not winning this one!” And then starts messing up after a bad call. Gotta take the punches and move on

  19. MelvinJunior Says:

IF you don’t say “IF” BigBadDave, then what else is left to even discuss here!?

  20. heyjude Says:

This was a game-changing call. And just like StickinUp4Centers said, a season altering call.

The refs haven’t done our Bucs any favors this season. They call penalties quickly on the Bucs, but miss blatant ones that the other team does. Maybe we should have ref-robots instead.

  21. Tucker Says:

My bad guys I missed a payment for the refs this game knew I was forgetting something.

  22. Fred McNeil Says:

Calls like this happen every game. Its not why we lost. You certainly can’t blame our injuries on that one crap call. To me, earlier on, it seemed like the refs were leaning on the Crows. Why do refs carry yellow flags? The dog’s blind too. BTW, is it just me or do any of you keep thinking the flashes from yellowy cleats at the edges of the screen look like penalty flags sometimes?

  23. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

The flag on Wirfs was not thrown until Mayfield scrambled past Wirfs toward the LOS. If Mayfield had stayed back I don’t think Wirfs would have been called. Of course that could have been a sack instead so….

  24. Wyoming Joe Says:

Love how the geniuses on this site love to pound on Baker when they know so little about him since he came to the NFL. Agree, the pick in the end zone was bad- a heart breaker – but the pass dropped by Evans was a heart attack. Love the guy, but is that the second or third TD he’s dropped this season?

Baker doesn’t fold under pressure, but he tends to press too had rather than throwing the ball away every once in a while.

  25. Rayjay1122 Says:

That ref could also stick with his full time job as a meat cutter at Publix.

  26. CleanHouse Says:

Yeah and if my grandmother had balls she’d be my grandpa

  27. Nicholas Carlson Says:

We could have won that game. It was a weird one

  28. Kenton Smith Says:

We’re ahead 7 – 0. A holding penalty negates a touchdown. Baltimore I believe got a few more worse calls than we did. Anyway we kick a field goal. Why don’t we go for the touchdown? I think we were inside the 5 yard line. It stripped the offense of confidence which we had in spades. Bowles was afraid the Ravens would go 96 yards. Tells the defense we have no confidence in you either. I didn’t like that, we should have gone for it. The 1st pick McMillan in the back of the end zone- he has to be coming back to Mayfield. The defender was covering Otten rubbed off towards McMillan. McMillan has to see what is happening and come back to the ball. He didn’t. He’s a rookie but he hung his QB out to dry.

  29. Kenton Smith Says:

McMillan running simple down, out and down routes and can’t get a step . Mayfield tries throwing a back shoulder pass since McMillan can’t beat the cornerback and McMillan can’t even get his head around. This is at least 4 seconds after the snap. No wonder they aren’t throwing his way. He needs alot of practice with his QB.

  30. Rod Munch Says:

Wait, did they stop with the stupid awful guests during the Manningcast? I actually enjoyed watching them, but then they’d bring on retarded celebrities that wouldn’t even talk about the game, and it was awful, so I stopped watching it.

  31. Esteban85 Says:

Hindsight is 20/20. If if’s and buts were candy and nuts we’d be in the Super Bowl every season

Wow, that’s amazing insight. Thanks for sharing.

  33. Capt.Tim Says:

The refs stealing that TD, then the Evans drop- changed the game. It was all Ravens from there on out

  34. Bucschamp Says:

Trash call. Wirfs was solid on that play

  35. BakerBucs says Says:

I say that Evans drop was the kicker that ball was perfectly placed a monkey cud of caught that dime even with a charlie horse, bakers int in the end zone was just as bad we have lost 2 games that shud have went bucs way

  36. Don Says:

Whats funny is that there is SO MUCH holding by offensive lineman that go uncalled. Except when it isn’t remotely holding and the flag comes on a touchdown. What a joke. Clown show.

  37. Sacker58 Says:

    Vegas and the Refs!!
