Trade Deadline Looms

October 31st, 2024

GM Jason Licht.

How bold might Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht be before Wednesday’s 2024 NFL trade deadline?

Joe thinks the Bucs’ performance against the Chiefs on Monday could be a factor. If Tampa Bay can pull off the upset, then perhaps Licht feels more motivated to improve the roster in a hurry?

Of course, a win Monday could have the opposite effect and lead to Licht digging in more on his current talent — and a belief that Todd Bowles can coach his defense out of the inexcusable funk it’s in.

And for those wondering, Joe isn’t hanging the defense’s woeful showing over the last month on Licht. What Kirk Cousins has done to the Bucs is something Joe would expect to see against a defense with far, far, far less talent.

Joe has almost given up on the Bucs trading for an edge rusher, but Joe could envision the Bucs chasing inside linebacker help, a tight end or a punter.

Joe also could see the Bucs doing something unexciting, such as trading a piece of their defensive line depth for a late-round draft pick.

There’s still a full slate of games before the trade deadline, so injuries around the league could shape the Bucs’ considerations.

Don't Expect A Bucs Trade For A Receiver

  1. Tye Says:

Can’t trade for a competent HC or DC so hope for improvement is slim!

  2. SmoothBayRider Says:

I hate to say this, but Devin White wasn’t any worse than KJ Britt currently is. I say bring him back. Maybe kick the tires on Kwon Alexander. Something has to change

  3. Jeff Says:

Clueless Todd would drop Reggie White into coverage. Can’t win with this coach. Fire Bowles, Promote Cohen to HC and OC, and hire a legit D coordinator with a modern scheme.

  4. First Name Greatest Says:

Licht values his picks over the immediate needs, if you are expecting help from a trade you are going to be waiting for a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time

Bucs are doomed with Todd Blows in charge

  5. richbucsfan Says:

This upcoming game with KV will be a bloodbath. It will once reveal the poor roster the Bucs have. How can a perennial championship team like KC count draft top tier players while the Bucs draft 2 Pitt guys that are injury prone and othe unproductive players? I would slow down on the Ring of Honor talk until Licht proves he can get the Bucs out of the quicksand.

  6. Oxycondomns Says:

i saw guys getting beat in the atlanta game. thunderbird got burned, the first td the bucs player bounced off pitts

  7. OrlandoBucFan Says:

I don’t understand why other contending teams are making trades to strengthen their rosters, but the Bucs are standing pat. Who knows what’s going on behind the scenes, but I hope Licht is actively working the phones. An edge rusher would be nice, but I would also be happy with an inside linebacker. We don’t need a receiver. Evans will be back soon and McMillan, Palmer, Jarrett, Otton, and the running backs can pick up the slack. We desperately need defensive help!

  8. El hefe Says:

Ilb needs to be the only trade we are not the best at edge but they will work if the middle of the field doesn’t get taken advantage of

  9. JOBJON713 Says:

HE LOVES HIS DRAFT PICKS STOP CRYING JOE

  10. doolnutts Says:

I think this is one of the most talented rosters we have ever had. Just sad have bad bowles has squandered this team.

  11. Nutterbuccer Says:

4-6 in 2 weeks. Same story as last year. Start hot…some injuries and zero adjustment lack of communication Bowles can’t get the defense right. Then lose 5 out of 6 and easy schedule after that……getting old

  12. Fred McNeil Says:

Yanno…things look bleak. Last year it was mostly the offense. This year it’s mostly the defense. Its not going to do us any good to bring in some rando and expect him or her (these days) to save our season. Any hope for recovery lies with the players we already have. Our guys are our guys. Last year we rallied at the end. Can we do it again? I dunno. I guess I’ll watch a few football(?) games and find out . Pass me a beer, Joe. I need one

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

We have had multiple chances during this season to improve our Defense. And we would not. So I don’t look for any miracles from this franchise. I can only await the ending of the season where hopefully, The Glaziers will man up and stop the bleeding and..Fire Todd Bowles. Give Licht his walking papers also. We are sick and tired of the yr end and yr out Mediocrity.

  14. adam from ny Says:

picks are a total crap shoot…

can’t really plan who is there when you pick…

can’t decide who scoops up someone you want before you pick…

can’t even figure out 3 years late if a dude pans out half the time…

    it’s a crap shoot…

i say try to fill one need…sure something up, because we are leaking oil in at least 3 areas…

don’t go crazy, but try to fix an issue…one issue, maybe 2

  15. LVMYBUCS Says:

Trade Dean and White for some good picks

  16. BucsBeast Says:

I’ve completely given up on the Defense.
I don’t want to hear excuses anymore.
Bowles defense needs pass rushers and we have ZERO.
So either get Bowels a rush or BYE Bye Bowels.
Defense isn’t working and hasn’t worked great in years.

  17. Armybucsfan Says:

Joe I love you man but if you think we can squeak by with a win against the Chief’s without Goodwin and Evan’s you need to let me know what you are smoking cus the likelihood that we will win under the crappy coaching from Bowles is slim to none. Bowles will get out coached and mahomes will pick out bon existent defense apart and Andy Reid will show Bucs fans what a REAL COACH CAN DO. I love my Bucs but Bowles needs to go. His defensive schemes are predictable and he is more concerned with disguising his coverage than being effective and going after the QBs. I pray this is his last year as HC.

  18. Wyoming Joe Says:

My Christmas wish would be for Licht to trade for some better “fans” than the handful of haters and pansies found on this site. I’ve purposefully stayed away from commenting much because this small group of idiots drive the rest of us crazy! Man, these guys give up so easily.

  19. JustVisiting Says:

Wyoming Joe: thanks for that one. LOL

  20. SenileSenior Says:

I will keep watching the games and looking past some of the “fans”, Wyoming Joe.

    Go Bucs!

  21. Woodenman Says:

    Agree totally Wyoming Joe

  22. Billyboy Says:

The season is over why would you trade?

  23. Allbuccedup Says:

Monday games features the best defense in the league against almost the worse defense in the league. Mahomes is not having a good year so don’t be surprised if he finds his mojo Monday night. Licht’s not going to trade or sign anyone by the deadline he almost never does

  24. Bucnjim Says:

I actually predict an upset over KC 24-21. It always takes a couple of days to get over division loses but either way if you are betting take the points. Also keep an eye on the Panthers upsetting the Saints and the Cowboys beating the Falcons in Atlanta

  25. Pewter Power Says:

Licht needs his drafts picks those mid and late rounds picks are apparently going to get him a Super Bowl ring and he can continue to fortify his depth with undrafted homegrown talent. You know what I mean those guys they hype up all offseason like they are the future but can barely get on the field to play special teams snaps.

In case you’re wondering why you don’t get national recognition licht lol you packed it in for the year in week 8, you got an nfc offensive player of the week who can’t even get consistent snaps. Why trade why sign anyone. Bucs are still trying to figure out their post Brady path forward.

  26. Badbucs Says:

A Christmas gift for the holier than thou? Most of the posters on this site just looking for answers. Go back to suffering in silence.

  27. Dew Says:

    Shaq

  28. Tucker Says:

KC defense is no joke think the bucs are going to struggle offensively against that defense. Hope they get smith back to help cover the middle of the field that has been wide open the last few games.

  29. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs should inquire about Nick Bosa. He is worth a 1st round draft pick. Our defense is automatically improved. San Frans fans are turning against him We will not.

  30. Rod Munch Says:

Just imagine if we traded for a punter, that would solve everything!

  31. GoneGator Says:

If we could find help at ILB, corner, or edge it could help us.

I think we’re going to be OK on offense. Younger guys will need to step up @ receiver but I think that’s likely to happen. We’re still going to be able to move the ball.

Defensively, I’m not sure we can get consistently better without some new personnel.

  32. First Name Greatest Says:

Licht is puzzled how KC can find quality DB’s who play within 5 yards of their receiver while he can’t draft a DB that can be within the same zip code as their primary target

  33. Bucnjim Says:

An NFL team isn’t much different than corporate America. CEO comes to you (The offense) and says hey I really need you to step up until I can get this department (The defense) figured out. Just give a couple weeks and I’ll make it right

  34. GoneGator Says:

Bucs should inquire about Nick Bosa. He is worth a 1st round draft pick. Our defense is automatically improved. San Frans fans are turning against him We will not.

You’re speaking for yourself when you say “we will not” turn on him. Some of us already think he’s a giant azzwad and idiot. He’d be poison.

  35. Hearty Dikerson Says:

WyomingJoe has to be the most insufferable poster here. Every post is him complaining about other fans complaining.

Since the rest are too stupid to see what you see, by all means please shed some light on what Bowles is doing right and why anyone should be optimistic right now.

  36. Rod Munch Says:

One reason the Bucs might not be making any moves is the cap. While they do have some cap space ($7.5m from what I see), they keep kicking their cap issue down the road each year. Remember that the $7.5m from this year will roll over to next year, so that might be a consideration. Just throwing that out there as a reason they might not be making any moves – although I’d think winning this year is a lot more important than what might happen next year.

  37. StretchOMatic Says:

Why Joe, whatever do you mean? The Bucs have just signed veteran cornerback Troy Hill. Recently with the Panthers. That should solve all of our defensive woes! LOL

  38. Rod Munch Says:

I noted this yesterday, but Mike Edwards, who is on the Chiefs, is available (although they certainly wouldn’t trade him before this game). He should cost basically nothing (maybe a conditional 7th round swap perhaps) and Edwards already knows the defense. I was never that big on him, but he could step in and play safety, which would let you move Winfield to corner. I don’t like using Winfield at corner, but right now, you’re starting a 6th stringer at corner, you got no choice but to make some moves.

Unless of course you just make no moves, and do nothing, which is what the Bucs seem to be doing.

It’s very puzzling. You got complete trash after David at ILB, yet they do nothing. You have a bunch of garbage WRs after McMillan, and yet they do nothing. You have zero depth at offensive tackle. You have nothing at corner.

Maybe the issue is they don’t actually have any faith in this team – they lack depth everywhere, so trading to fill one hole isn’t going to do much.

I would disagree. After these next two games (@KC, SF) the Bucs schedule eases up bigly, and they could absolutely go on a run. They need to give them a chance, and if the team falls flat on its face, then you do your roster reboot you’ve been kicking down the road this upcoming offseason.

  39. A Bucs Fan Says:

Licht and Spytek value their picks too highly. Especially because they seem to have above-average success drafting in the mid 3-5 rounds. No way they trade away a pick unless it’s for Azeez Ojulari. Cade, Yaya, Chris Godwin, Trey, Anthony Nelson, Bucky, Tykee, Zyon, Sirvocea, Jordan Whitehead, Rachaad White, J-Mac, and Rob Hainsey are all mid to late round selections on the team.

  40. Buc4evr Says:

45-27 on Monday night and Jason still won’t get an edge rusher. 4-6 at the bye and it will be too late. This season is done. Hopefully Bowles is gone next season.

  41. A Bucs Fan Says:

@ Rod Munch Mike Edwards plays for the Bills.

  42. Bucnjim Says:

I’m not sure why anyone is surprised about not trading. This was determined way before the season started and is part of the long term rebuilding. Is there anyone here who thinks we can win the Super Bowl this year? If the answer is no then let them continue the rebuilding process. Don’t give up draft capital for an early playoff exit

    ———-

Well I’m an idiot – I thought he was still on the Chiefs. I had to recheck to make sure I didn’t see any article from last year or something – but no, same story, but I stupidly got the team wrong. Thanks for letting me know.

  44. Pickgrin Says:

Losing Sir Dennis for the season was a bigger loss than it seemed…

Britt is an absolute liability more plays than not. And I doubt that JJ Russell is the ‘answer’ to the obvious problem in the middle of the defense. Bowles hinted that Vi Jones might be a quality player in the future but deems him “not ready” to play yet…

Trading for a starting quality or better inside LBer would likely be the best way that Licht could improve this team by bringing in 1 player…..

It would take a few weeks to get a new player up to speed – especially on defense – so trading for even a good and smart player at MLB wouldn’t help this team very much until sometime after the bye week…

If this 2024 Buccaneers team does indeed have Super Bowl aspirations – then an upgrade at inside LBer is almost required because Britt is getting targeted and picked on badly – and we already know Dennis is not coming back this season….

  45. Buchen61 Says:

Rod Munch says “Well I’m an idiot”……. Finally something we can agree on… Lol

The bucs dont need to trade for anyone until they address the real issue that is holding this team back and that’s the head coach. Bowles has had plenty of opportunities to prove himself both here and with the Jets and the results aren’t good. We are beating a dead horse, his schemes arent working and hes lost control of this defense. Cant possibly be successful when you are giving up 30+ points a game to your opponent. Fire him bring in BB to finish the season for us and help with hiring a long term solution to the head coach position.

  46. Pmike Says:

    +1 WyomingJoe.

Get the feeling most of these commenters started rooting for the Bucs after we bought Brady…

  47. Rod Munch Says:

Buchen61 – What’s the Bucs current depth chart a corner?

  48. BakerFan Says:

They need to pressure the heck out of Mahomes, he will give it up. I know that is way to much to ask of this defense and KC lives making plays in the middle of the field. It will be up to the Bucs offense to match KC’s offense, otherwise it is a loss.

  49. Buchen61 Says:

Rod Munch… You are actually quite knowledgeable when your Mayfield derangement syndrome isnt kicking in and yes the bucs are paper thin on the backside so i get your point completely. But all things considered the way Bowles has handled the injury situation at least to me is mind numbing. Quit playing so much soft zone… Its not working and its not working big time. Donr blitz so much… Its not working and its not working big time… Do something different !!!

    All im saying

  50. Lightningvinny Says:

Keep Britt in for Rushing downs and Bring JTS in for passing downs ,,, we get to find a place for him somewhere ,,, it’s not edge ,,, (wonder if he can punt)

  51. ocala Says:

Do not make any trades. Bucs need to promote Coen and move on from Bowles.

  52. Davenport Says:

Licht has this team in contention every year — there are very few GMs that can do that.

Bowles was a forced hire when Arians quit so late in the offseason and has takes a talented roster and continues to coach them down.

  53. Bucsfan Says:

Think about this for a second , our 2nd round pick Braswell cannot beat out Tryon-Istinka for playing time……………………..

  54. Marine Buc Says:

I have seen enough… I predicted a 7 win season. Now I’m not sure we even get to 7.

I don’t understand why other contending teams are making trades to strengthen their rosters, but the Bucs are standing pat.

Orlando, I’m on the Blue Coast, 3000 miles away from you, and I can understand. Bowles/Licht don’t want a new face in the middle of the season. If they can’t make anything out of their drafted “stars” like JTS, Hall and Braswell (who?) what would it say if we plug in a reject from another team and he balls-out. That would cinch the noose around their necks.

Wyoming Joe, I have been a Buc fan since 1978. Have you? Same question for you, Pmike?

  58. Lightningvinny Says:

Offer Saleh the DC job(can leave GB as consultant) give him the authority to do what he wants with them ,,, we need a new set of eyes , a new voice ,, some new ideas back there and Bowles can be the Head Coach

  59. View from 132 Says:

Wyoming… back off. The truth of being a Bucs fan is that we watched for 48 and a half seasons now and the Bucs have a winning record against THREE teams.

Two desperate Hail Mary management moves – trading for Gruden, signing Brady – got two trophies in the case.

Without those, the franchise is the Cleveland Browns and we’d all be asking when, exactly, the Cheap Glazers are going to pay for their half of the Tax Funded Stadium?

So if you think Bucs fans are annoyed or aren’t “good fans” because of some blog comments, you haven’t heard the rest of the story.

  60. BPBucsfan Says:

No help coming. They could’ve had Montez Sweat for a 2nd round pick last year. He’s playing for the Bears now and he’s playing like his hair is on fire 🔥. Oh well, who needs and edge rusher anyways. We have JTS.

  61. Bucsfan81 Says:

Let’s be honest we are most likely losing to the Chiefs. Maybe we need to be sellers and not buyers. Start rebuilding for next year. More draft capital the better for the new head coach Liam Cohen.

  62. A Bucs Fan Says:

@BPBucsfan with what money? Bucs couldn’t afford Sweat. Even at 4 million and then they DEFINITELY couldn’t pay him 100 million dollars in the offseason without losing Mike or Baker.

  63. BakerFan Says:

What would be the crime of trading a couple of high draft picks for Crosby. You get a proven Rusher at 27 year of age and 2 more years on his contract and is actually priced right for what he does.

  64. Bucsfan Says:

Yes get some draft capital so we can waste it on a kicker or a punter, splendid idea.

  65. Lightningvinny Says:

Tell Baker we are going to most likely lose on Monday,,, pretty sure he is thinking the opposite ,,, like let’s be the 1 team that beats the lions and the Chiefs

  66. Defense Rules Says:

Too many doom-and-gloomers on JBF nowadays. Yes we’re got problems, but we’re still currently 4-4. We’ve played 7 teams with a winning record … beaten 3 of them & lost to 4 of them. We play 1 more team with a winning record in our next 2 games (Chiefs) then the 49ers (4-4) then the MUCH-NEEDED BYE.

After that we have 7 games remaining. Only 1 of those 7 teams (the Chargers at 4-3) have a winning record. We have yet to lose to a team that currently has a losing record. Even assuming that we lose to the Chiefs, Bucs could POTENTIALLY finish 12-5 this season even with just a middle-of-the-road defense. More realistically, 10-7 is still doable (with us suffering 3 more losses). And that MIGHT get us into the playoffs once again.

What will it take to do that? For one, our offense needs to CONSISTENTLY put up points AND stop committing so many turnovers; they’re killing us. And yes, it may well take 25-30 PPG. For another, our defense needs to get its act together and at least become average. Three things come to my mind to make that happen: (1) promote George Edwards to DC; (2) get several players back healthy (Dean? Vea? among them) and keep them healthy; and (3) priority trade for a MLB to replace Britt.

  67. #99 the big fella Says:

Don’t attack Wyoming Joe He is only stating that some fans give up to easy.. I personally agree. Do I want Todd Bowles fired? YES I DO !!!
But complaining on every article isn’t going to solve the problem. Until Jason light actually tries to add good players through trades or free agency we are never going to be a powerhouse.. Jason has got to rethink building through the draft, especially when he doesn’t know how to draft pass rushers. He also has to tell Bowles hit the road!

  68. Slacker Says:

I’d like to know where it states that if you are a fan that it’s illegal to state the obvious and or say anything negative about the franchise. I’m calling it as I see it. Does that make me less of a fan because I say the defense couldn’t stop a nose bleed? Apparently some think that being a true fan means you should always say and think positively. OK, I’ll try it…. Man, it’s awesome the bucs have one of the best defenses in the league. It’s great watching them consistently getting to the QB. Man, we are so lucky that all this draft capital on the defensive line has worked out. Offenses are having a hard time with this srout defense and all the great schemes and adjustments from the coordinator.

  71. Rod Munch Says:

    Buchen61 Says:
Quit playing so much soft zone… Its not working and its not working big time.

    ———-

I don’t disagree with that at all, but it is worth noting that they’re 32nd when it comes to playing man-to-man, so in theory even worse than in zone.

BUT there are different zones, and I’ve complained about for years, and the same thing you’re saying, the zone that Bowles chooses to play is a soft zone where guys seemingly just stand around. It leaves huge holes all over the field. The old, all-time great Tampa 2 Bucs defenses, didn’t just stand around. Also, I’ve seen on tape when the Bucs do more zone blitzing (real blitzes, not just sending 5 as part of playing a base 5-2-4 defense) the guys in zone move with the action and make the QBs have to make better passes.

I really just don’t get it. Vs the Eagles, for example, the Bucs defense was ultra aggressive, and those passing windows were tight. I know the Eagles were without their top two WRs, but the Bucs didn’t just sit back and let Hurts pick them apart like Bowles has been doing before and after that Eagles game. It makes no sense. It’s like Bowles is living off his rep and thinks teams are going to be scared of a bunch of exotic blitzes and be completely unprepared for a super soft no pressure defense that lets the QB’s have all day to pick the defense apart. It’s extremely puzzling.

I’m big on going down swinging, and Todd needs to start coaching like his job is on the line, and start swinging – playing aggressive. If he fails, gets fired, at least he tried.

  72. Defense Rules Says:

#99 the big fella … ‘He also has to tell Bowles hit the road!’

You were doing so good Big Fella, until that. I still remember full well what happened when the Bucs fired Tony Dungy. And all the complaints about ‘Oh he can’t us to the Super Bowl’ and ‘He’ll never have a decent offense’, etc.

So we bring in Chucky to replace Tony. Disregard how many high draft picks we gave up to get Chucky (2 first round & 2 second round) or that he inherited Monte Kiffen as his DC with Monte’s #1 defense, considered by many to be one of the Top-5 best defenses of all time. Bucs go 12-4, win the Super Bowl, and the Bucs become ‘relevant’.

Chucky remains for 6 more years, in which the Bucs had 3 winning seasons & 3 losing seasons. Chucky’s overall record in Tampa was 57-55, but after 2002 it was only 45-51. He made the playoff TWICE after 2002, and lost both times. Monte’s defense ranked in the Top-10 for 6 of Gruden’s 7 years, and averaged a #7 ranking. Mastermind OC Chucky’s offense never ranked above a #18 offense, and averaged a #21 ranking.

Chucky got launched after the 2008 season, and replaced by Raheem Morris who went 17-31 in his 3 year stint.

o Raheem was followed by Greg Schiano who went 11-21 in his 2 years.

o Schiano was followed by Lovie Smith, who went 8-24 in his 2 years here.

o Lovie was followed by Dirk Koetter, who went 19-29 in his 3 years here.

Thankfully Bruce Arians arrived in 2019, but the tide didn’t turn immediately. BA went 7-9 in his 1st year, but then signed a host of talent (Brady, Gronk, Jensen, Brown, Fournette, etc) and got some great draft picks … and away we went, for 2 years.

Todd Bowles inherited that in 2022, minus Gronk, Jensen & several others, but still managed to win the division in 2022 & 2023 & win 1 playoff game. His defenses from 2020-2023 averaged a #8 ranking despite a lot of personnel changes.

My point Big Fella: Be careful what you wish for. The grass on the other side of the fence may look greener, but it might be nothing but real nice looking green weeds. We went through over 15 years of meh HCs to get to BA then to TB. Personally don’t ever want to go through that again.

  73. White Tiger Says:

I think It’s Licht’s Plan to NOT do any trades… we’re gonna ride it out and wait for the next draft options.

I’m sure there’s some one armed, gimpy, vet Edge rushers out there who can always be signed to a one year deal to “boost” our pass rush – or maybe a one legged Cornerbacks that could lock down a small area of coverage, or maybe an aging star ILB, who’s great at stopping the run – which we could use in coverage and free up KJ to go do that downhill stuff…

Licht is holding this up, adding through trades is not in his playbook.

I don’t understand why other contending teams are making trades to strengthen their rosters, but the Bucs are standing pat. ”

Every year, the trade deadline gets hyped, and the Bucs usually do nothing or next to nothinh, and with good reason.

Those otjer conteding teams, year in and year out, usually don’t get much benefit from the trades made this late. These are the ones that are overpaid for.

  76. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    White Tiger, nailed it.

Also, consider this: some of these players being mentioned will possibly be on the open market before too long.

Why use drft capital if we do not have to.

And the Bucs are good at development. Fans don’t much like the process, but in the end it is the best way to build a good team.
