Surgery For Chris Godwin

October 22nd, 2024

As Bucs fans feared late last night, Chris Godwin’s great 2024 season is over.

He gruesomely dislocated his ankle with just under a minute left in Bucs territory as he converted a 3rd-and-17 over the middle.

Per NFL Network, Godwin will have surgery this week and is expected to recover for the 2025 season. Godwin turns 29 in February and could become a free agent in March if the Bucs don’t re-sign him.

In a twisted way, Joe thinks the Bucs are more likely to re-sign Godwin because of the injury.

Joe can’t imagine other teams investing huge money in Godwin coming off ankle surgery. So if he’s going to play on a prove-it kind of deal, it might as well be in Tampa where he’s trusted and appreciated, and has a relationship with the quarterback.

    I agree 💯.

I’ll go into generational debt to pay for his next contract out of pocket. Tampa needs Chris.

    Devonte Adams available?

Get well Chris, you’ve persevered through serious injuries before, you’ll do it again.

  7. Vanessa Anne Says:

Worst fears confirmed. Out for the season.

Thoughts and prayers with him for a full recovery.

  8. Boss Says:

    Get well CG.

    We r screwed

  9. zzbucs Says:

One of my worst days in sports life….

Hope not, but season seems to be over, doesn´t make any sense to trade for an old WR, who teams will demand top tier prices……
We will need to move on from this…….

  10. heyjude Says:

Hard to hear for we fans, but thinking about what he and his family are going through right now is even worse.

Chris is strong-willed. After surgery and rehab he will be good to go for 2025. Agree with Joe, the Bucs should resign him.

  11. Bucsfan81 Says:

Damn sucks hope he recovers quickly would love to see him back next year.

  12. RagingBrisket Says:

Hope we re-sign him. Been an awesome Buccaneer his whole career

  13. unbelievable Says:

I knew it as soon as I saw his foot twisted. Down for the year, as is our season as a team.

Feel bad for Chris. Hope for his sake he’s able to recover. Could be career ending. What a terrible night last night.

  14. dbbuc711 Says:

Considering how Godwin got injured trying to help the Bucs, no way they should use that for a prove-it deal.

  15. jeff Says: Says:

Big opportunity for Palmr, has both Size and Speed. Was hoping during off season he would work on his route running and his hands.

From the Neck down a big time play-maker. The only question is does he have it from the Neck Up?

Big opportunity to prove it, starting next week with Atlanta.

  16. Godlovesbucs Says:

Senseless injury to him and Evans. This was not a must win game, Evans looked hobbled from the start. Why was he playing? With 1 min left, why was godwin playing?

Next week is a must win, and because of terrible coaching decisions Tampa is down their 3 most important players.

Todd bowles stellar d scheming will hold Atlanta under 50 hopefully, so the o only has to get to 51.

  17. David Kilmer Says:

Best wishes to Chris for a speedy and full recovery. He has proved to be Tampa’s most valuable offensive player. He has been such a boon both on and off the field. He is just a tremendous person with great character and was having an incredible year. He plays so hard , it is something to watch. One can’t help but feel for him and his family. I sure hope the Bucs do the right thing and bring him back It would truly be a travisty if they don’t and I don’t know if I could remain a fan.

  18. Steven #55 Says:

Speedy Recovery Chris – come back stronger and remain in the Red & Pewter

  19. AL Says:

Bad coach, worst GM in the league. But maybe there’s someone they can trade for.

  20. Jeagan1999 Says:

    Get well soon, Chris!!

  21. ElioT Says:

I’ll never forgive Toad Bowels for this.

He single-handedly ended the Evans / Godwin era in one game.

  22. BucNasty Says:

So sad for Chris. Injuries are unfortunately part of the business. I hope we do right by him and pay him when he’s up to return.

All that said…. the season isn’t over. You Chicken Littles need to chill. It isn’t pretty, but we have a great chance to beat Atlanta and take first in the division at 5-3. I remember this spring when people were saying that McMillan would be Godwins replacement. Well… the time came sooner than we expected. Let’s see what we’ve got. Run the ball and throw strategically. We can beat them as long as we play smart, mistake free football.

  23. MegaFailure Says:

    season. done.

  24. Hodad Says:

Thanks Todd for making a bad loss even worse. Ya couldn’t just let the game end.

  25. JimBobBuc Says:

Thoughts and prayers with him for a full recovery. I think Licht and the Glazers will stand by him with a new contract. I think a fair deal would be a very big incentive laden contract which pays him big money if he regains his form.

  26. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Not thinking of the Bucs right now. Thinking of Godwin. Very glad it is not career-threatening. Or at least not certainly so. Bucs should re-sign him for sure, or at least make an offer that drives his market value. Awful stuff.

  27. Kenny Says:

Really feel for the guy. Hes the only player on Tampa with sure hands. Its like Licht purpusfully only signs players with the worst hands in the NFL… Except for Godwin.

A meaningless catch in a meainingless point of a game cost Godwin probably being the top WR in the NFL and all pro honors this year… in a contract year.

There goes Bakers season as well.

Anyways, Tampa has to get their WR situation figured out. Evans is a straight up liability this season (and obviously beyond). Hes nothing more than a #3-5 type of guy now with awful hands and no seperation.

McMillion might have worse hands than even Evans, how is that possible?

Palmer, Ive always been high on, but the Bucs defintiely arent, and I believe they know mroe than I do.

I guess they going to throw to Otten 12 times a game for the rest of the year….. And hes also nothing special, probably closer to the #32 tight end than a top 10 TE.

  28. RVATom Says:

Godwin was Bake’s relief valve. NO ONE holds onto the ball like him. Hell, he has been EVERY QBs relief valve. 3 and 17, makes the play, dislocated his ankle AND holds the ball. Evans doesnt do that. Not anyone. I hate to say I think we could have found reasonable success without Evans. Without Godwin I think Bake is going to start looking bad. And Bake isn’t bad. But Godwin and Evans made him look nearly elite. Without Evans and Godwin I almost think we are the 3rd best team in the South. And that sux to say.

  29. Godlovesbucs Says:

    @BucNasty-

3 weeks ago Cousins threw for 500+ against Todd’s D. At one point, Rattler on his first NFL start was 11-15 for 140 yards and a td. Last week, Baltimore scored on 6 consecutive possessions and racked up 500+ yards and 40+points.

In order to beat anyone right now, our offense needs to be able to consecutively score 30+ MINIMUM. Without their #1 and #1B receiver, their top 2 weapons. With a sketchy and inconsistent running game and average line.

  30. Ed Says:

Fully expect Chris to recover and continue his career here in Tampa. He is the hardest working player on the team and has sacrificed his body by continually being targeted in the middle of the field in contested territory. Its a shame that the top WR’s on the Bucs, Evans and Godwin have never been able to play a full career without injuries. For certain Evans should have been pulled in New Orleans and not put on the field last night. He wasn’t hurt, he was disabled.

So where do they go from here?

Rely more on Tucker and Irving and put White in motion for swing passes and to run crossers off the motion.

Coaching challenge: give McMillan and Palmer quick learning to be #1 and #2 WR which means different routes to take advantage of their quickness and get the vertical part of the offense out of mothballs.

Tight end, get the young guy Culp into the offense.

This is why you draft depth. Injuries happen. Ayuk and McCaffrey have been out most of the year. Niners have struggled but have stayed competitive. Steelers have no true #1 WR but have been winning. Vikings plugged Sam Darnold in and are tied for first place. Packers lost Jordan Love for multiple games and won.

I don’t want to hear fans whining about players injured. Other teams find a way to cater to the ability of the backups. Lets see if Bowles can adapt, the offense has to evolve around these new players, make it happen.

What is with this defense? 500 yards on them in 2 games. Way too much wide open windows in the middle of the field? No pressure except on blitzes?
This defense has taken a turn for the worse. It is time to start sitting players like JTS who avoid contact and find a way to shore up the middle of the field. If the Bucs are going to be a zone defense, they have to fix these holes.

  31. No Mercy Says:

I’m sick to my stomach Evans is the face of the team but Godwin is the heart and soul….. my excitement for the rest of the season is gone completely. Get well soon CG 🙏 😖

  32. LVMYBUCS Says:

“He gruesomely dislocated his ankle with just under a minute left”
WITH UNDER A MINUTE LEFT IN A NO WIN SITUATION Mr Bowles

  33. Buc king Says:

Wellllll that Bowles for being a idiot

  34. FortMyersDave Says:

Get well Mr Godwin. As for the Bucs, well the initial line for the Bucs/ATL moved from Bucs -3 to the ATL -2.5 a sizable move; about the same shift in the Aints/Bucs line after Carr was ruled out for the 51-27 game.

Maybe the Falcons read all the press which is now probably anointing the ATL as NFC South champs as it is apparent that the Bucs and Saints are circling the drain and not much better than Carolina???? Rah is their coach and I can see the ATL not being focused for the game, kind of like how Bowels had the Bucs prepared for the Saints last season for week 17. The Bucs have a chance on Sunday if everything breaks their way, the refs return the home cooking they gave the ATL during the Thursday night game and somehow Bowels figures out a way to keep Britt off of the field and lays off that soft zone so that mediocre ATL QB Cousins does not pick the D apart again. Wishful thinking but the ATL is a lot like Tampa in often not bringing their A game when you think they would.

This game is now for the season in all likelihood thanks to Bowles and the Bucs not being able to afford to be swept by the ATL. Bucs get boat raced again on D and I suspect that Bowles seat suddenly gets as hot as the seats in Dallas, New Orleans and Jacksonville though he will finish the season as the Glazers have never launched a head coach in season. However, they did fire Mike Smith, could they make Bowles give up play calling duties and hand them off to someone else? Is there anyone on the staff who can call the plays and would Bowles actually allow this? A bottom 5 D where every non rookie QB who has played the Bucs looks like Kurt Warner circa 1999 should get a DC fired, considering some of the talent on the roster: Vea, Kancey, Lavonte, Winfield etc. Sunday makes or breaks the season.

  35. unbelievable Says:

Offense was the only thing keeping us in games. What happened to the offense when Evans went down? It crumbled.

Now without Godwin on top of that… J Mac and Palmer gonna have to step the F up or it’s going to be a long season

  36. chris l Says:

i worry he leaves just to get a fresh start. so brutal. i am sick and cannot believe what transpired last night. dont ever remember feeling like this. bad losses for sure but this just feels sad and makes me not even want to watch the rest of the season. total despair

  37. CChead Says:

Baker will be the next man down with him scrambling to try to make something happen with the remaining receivers not able to get open..

  38. Not Gus Swayze Says:

    Thoughts and prayers CG

  39. Shak Says:

    ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  40. Deuceswild78 Says:

Any chance or sb thoughts down the drain between this and being out coached by other offenses

  41. KitGabriel Says:

    “AL Says:

Bad coach, worst GM in the league…”

You can question Bowles, but since Jason Licht took the helm in Tampa, there’s been no better small-market GM in the NFL.

Between convincing Bruce to un-retire, landing Brady, keeping Mr. Greenberg right where he is, and the stat that ~ 90% of our starters heard his voice on draft day… with the exception (mayyybe) of a familiar Stanford grad in a different Bay area, there’s no one I’d rather have than our AC/DC/GM.

  42. stpetebucfan Says:

“I’ll go into generational debt to pay for his next contract out of pocket.”

Chris ALREADY has generational wealth! His last deal was for 60 million with 40 million guaranteed. Chris does NOT need money!!! What he needs is somebody to help with his broken heart! I suspect his wife is more than up to the task.

AGAIN…I’m not just a cockeyed optimist. These Bucs are in EXACTLY the same spot as last year! In fact it got worse before it got better which is probably the same scenario for this year with 2-3 losses before the BYE and then the cupcake part of the schedule. Hopefully the team will finally be healthy, Kancey and Vea in particular. White will blossom as a really great slot receiver. McMillan finally figures it out by the bye, Palmer can keep D’s honest with that 4.3 speed and the OL will be even more experienced as a unit.

I get not counting your chickens until they’re hatched. What I don’t get is tossing the eggs out before you’ve even given them a freaking chance to hatch!!

  43. Tucker Says:

That’s probably the last time you see Chris Godwin in a Tampa uniform no telling what he is going to be after injury. The defense looked terrible why on earth were they changing the dline out like we were a hockey team is beyond me why KJ Britt is still on the field it is just crazy that guy is special teamer period been showing that for a while now. Todd is supposed to be a defensive guru?

  44. Shak Says:

Took the same L we would have taken had they not risked this injury. Congrats.

  45. stpetebucfan Says:

BTW You guys have it easy compared to my wife. Her family is a lot like many on this board, always whining about “spilt milk” after the Cow is out of the barn.

She has to tolerate me getting triggered everytime she gripes about something that can’t be changed. But you guys who read me can know she TOLERATES a lot from me. I have the Luck of the Irish and so she’s stuck by me. Freaking amzing in itself. Far more amazing than believe Bowles can simple REPEAT what he accomplished last season under the same trying circumstances. When the players quit on Todd than I’ll join them.

  46. Allbuccedup Says:

In the first quarter last night I said this team could win at least 11 games. Now after the injuries and horrible defensive effort I would be surprised if we can win 8.

  47. PassingThru Says:

The Bucs will win more than 8, but they do need to trade for a WR like Garrett Wilson. Even though Evans is an Iron Man, hammys heal slowly. A WR like Wilson will help keep the Bucs competitive.

  48. jason honeycutt Says:

So Hutchison snaps leg in 9 places and is avail to come back for playoffs. GOdwin breaks ankle and out for season.WHat a joke

  49. heyjude Says:

jason – Sadly so. I think Hutchinson had surgery immediately after at the TX hospital. We don’t know how Hutchinson’s rehab will go quite yet. They are forecasting it. But they could end up not being in the playoffs. Things change quickly around the NFL.

PassingThru – Mike will have an MRI today and we should know more about his hamstring injury too. Joe will let us know.

  50. Nflrefsarebad Says:

Adam Schefter now says it was an illegal hip drop tackle and Roquan Smith faces a possible fine.

When Bruce Arians coached the Cardinals he said players should be suspended for illegal hits for the same time that an injured player is out. Smith should be suspended for the rest of the season.. A fine is a slap on the wrist.

  51. Dom Says:

Just feel awful for Chris. This cost him millions and who knows if he returns even close to the same player. Just when he was looking like pre ACL injury CG too. Praying for him to get better soon. Just another blunder I’ll never be able to forgive Todd Bowles for

  52. Pewter941 Says:

I wonder how much they would pay Chris on a 1 year deal 🤔

  53. LUVMYBUCS Says:

It’s a violent game, and sh*t happens. Hopefully Chris heals up and continues the pursuit of his childhood dream.

    Go Bucs!

  54. Bucks 'n' Bucs Says:

Bucnasty got it right. All this talk about McMillen being the next Godwin. How about all the talk of putting White in the slot? That would make the running back situation easier.

  55. Davenport Says:

I coached youth & HS at a championship level for 27 years.

Every coach knows that when the game is decided, you pull your key players – especially after you’ve lost your #1 receiver in the game. Who cares what they say about it.

What Bowles did last night was rookie coach stuff and it’s a firing offense at this level.

  56. Pewter Power Says:

IF YOU’RE GODWIN WOULD YOU PLAY FOR BOWLES AGAIN?

  57. infomeplease Says:

    CG14 will be missed!

  58. Jeffrey Says:

If indeed this was an illegal hip-drop tackle by Roquan Smith. Screw the fine! It should be equal to what the injury does to the player. Illegal tackle takes Godwin out for the season, then Roquan should be done for 2024 as well.

As for Godwin, He has been a beast since arriving in Tampa! I have to laugh at people thinking the injury will cause his price to drop and that will keep him here. Don’t be so sure folks. I think the franchise tag is the best chance to keep him here as other NFL teams would jump to sign him away and there’s always the wife who has shown she isn’t afraid to speak up. Bowles is ridiculous in his decision making on this game. I, for one, am ready for the end of Bruce Arians, loyalty stink show to end.

  59. Tony Says:

    @ElioT

We can always resign ANTONIO BROWN & MICHAEL CLAYTON & THEN MAKE IT THE BROWN/CLAYTON ERA.🤣🤦😀

  60. BigMacAttack Says:

Chris has been paid well with his second contract. After 2 bad injuries, I would retire and never look back

  61. LakelandBuc Says:

Players want to stay in the game until the end

They gain easy yardage in garbage time, padding their stats

Why haven’t Kyle Trask took a snap all season???

Baker Mayfield be padding his stats

  62. Cobraboy Says:

You pull players when ahead and fully in control.

Not when behind with even a tiny chance of success.

    Otherwise you are a quitter.

  63. Mike Johnson Says:

Goodwin will be back and even better next year. God speed to him. But time for the mourning to end. Its next man up. Other teams got injuries too. No excuses. Lets get busy Bucs. Them Falcons are comin to town and choppin at the bit. Better be ready or lose the division.

  64. GoneGator Says:

Hipdrop? 😡 The league is reviewing the play

  65. Davenport Says:

Mike Johnson: Godwin is a FA come March. There’s no guarantee that he wants to come back, or if the team wants to invest big money in a twice seriously injured, 29 year old receiver.

  66. richbucsfan Says:

    Very sad for CG.
Last night showed the Bucs can’t play with the Big Boys. Way too many holes in the roster. Hope this is a wake up call for the FO and fans. At this point they are a tier 2 or 3 team. Fun to watch, but won’t accomplish anything.

  67. firethecannons Says:

Even Baker was in after CG14 was hurt, Baker was in till the end! wtf!!!! Bowles does not learn.

  68. adam from ny Says:

chris can play for the bucs for free next year and the bucs can start a “knees and ankles” fund for chris…

and all the fans across the state, country and world can toss in 5 bucks per game for chris and that will be his salary…it will come out to many millions by the end of the year for him…

and in essence, it’s way less than a stadium beer on game day…

    5 bucks a game X 17 games X all bucs fans = chris gets paid…

imagine how crazy that would be…chris would prolly make 50 mil next year…as rando fans of other teams are tossing money into the fund too…and of course 5 would be the bare minimum…you can donate whatever you want, it doesn’t have to be 5 beans…

a get well chris godwin fund 🙂

  69. JeffreyLane77 Says:

Looks like we will be looking to draft a No.1 or No.2 WR. Evans is awesome he’s a hall of famer. I expect him to play next year. But he’s not getting any younger. Godwin’s injury means he’s out for the rest of this year. I hate to say it but there’s no guarantee about Godwin being able to return to his best form next year. Maybe Licht can bring in some serviceable WR’s in free agency. I dunno… I’m just really bummed for both of these guys. Can’t believe the team lost them both in the same game. Tampa went from having a scary passing attack. To having a question mark. At least the run game has improved. Now if the defense could stop anybody we might be ok. Typical Bucs ball means we can’t have the offense and defense playing well at the same time. So I guess now the defense will play lights out and the offense will struggle.

  70. adam from ny Says:

as a kid i tore basically all the ligaments in one ankle and my foot was sort of hanging off my leg, and i had no money on me, and had to walk 60 blocks in manhattan to get home…dragging my foot the entire way…before deciding to go to the emergency room on advice from family…i was maybe 18-19 at the time…

i was ordered to wear an air cast all the time for basically 6 months and was on crutches the whole time too…as i waited for the ligaments to grow back naturally (if i remember correctly)…

it was a horrible time for me, and all i did was smoke weed during that time period…i would take 5 dollar cab rides up to harlem and back to cop the buddah & ses…grabbing 20 bucks worth of smoke and going back home…i was on one leg and crutches for a long time…

i’m sure chris will have great medical care and all, unlike me, but you gotta feel for him, he’s had such bad and unfortunate injuries…and he’s been such a great buccaneer and class act since day one

  71. D-Rok Says:

    Praying for you, Chris.
