Joe has written a couple of times already that Todd Bowles threw cold water on the folks hot and heavy panting after hearing the Rams were shopping Cooper Kupp.

Since Kupp played for Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen, like Baker Mayfield once did, and we have seen Mayfield’s success with Coen, Joe can easily see how folks connected the dots to envision Kupp catching passes from Mayfield.

Especially in the wake of the Monday night carnage of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin going down.

Kevin Patra of NFL.com believes if the Bucs want to be playing meaningful football in January, they absolutely have to be buyers or prepare to watch the playoffs from their couches for the first time in five seasons.

Before Tampa played Baltimore on Monday, I planned on pointing out that the Bucs could add corner or edge help to boost the defense. Then receivers Chris Godwin and Mike Evans were both lost on the same night;…  Those absences will take a ridiculous chunk out of the Bucs’ potential. Baker Mayfield has played splendidly, but can he continue to do so without two of the top playmakers in the league? Jalen McMillan, Trey Palmer and Sterling Shepard sit atop the depth chart until Evans returns.

The Bucs are 4-3 in a winnable NFC South, and their playoff window remains open, but GM Jason Licht might have to make a move to ensure it doesn’t slam shut before Thanksgiving. Could Tampa get in on the Cooper Kupp sweepstakes?

Well, the edge help, Joe simply does not or cannot understand the team’s willingness if not contentment with virtually no production from an edge rush.

It’s like a team saying, “Nah, we don’t need Matt Stafford. We’re good with Marcus Mariota. If we don’t make the playoffs, so what?”

If the Bucs were not content with their edge rushers, Joe believes they would have done something.

Evidence? See: Camarda, Jake.

Bowles said this week the team must trust the receivers they chose, trained and developed to replace Evans and Godwin, even though last week Coen said very publicly in his search for a No. 3 receiver that he has to first trust them.

So Coen is not won over with trust yet in a No. 3 receiver — and the Bucs are now banking on these same guys to be receivers Nos. 1 and 2?

The Chiefs needed a receiver. They went out and got one. They are serious about a Super Bowl run.

The Bills needed a receiver. They went out and got one. They are serious about a Super Bowl run.

The Jets needed a receiver. They went out and got one. They are serious about back page headlines.

But Joe does understand the message when Bowles said a top-shelf receiver would cost “half the team” in ransom. If the Bucs can somehow keep their heads above water until Evans returns, perhaps the Bucs really don’t need a receiver. That’s quite a gamble.

The wild card here is something Joe proposed last year: moving Rachaad White to slot. Joe really believes White could shine as a receiver.

But if you expect the Bucs to go out and grab a high-end receiver, well, based on how they refused to do just that for an edge rusher, it seems unlikely the Bucs would acquire a receiver.

  1. Baker Bowl Says:

I don’t think we will end up going for a big time receiver, nor do I think we should, but I don’t understand, as you said, the reluctance to get defensive help when it’s clearly the weak link.

Also, what happened with Camarda, been reading that it was potentially off the field issues, any insight on that?

  2. Bucnjim Says:

Fans always forget the fact that players like Kupp have a say in where they are traded. If Kupp says hell no I’m not playing there its a waste of time even considering a trade never mind what they’d have to give up.

  3. Lt. Dan Says:

Once again – Bowles is a genius.

  4. Kgh4life Says:

I can understand the Bucs point of view. Cupp has been injured a lot lately and the Rams want a 2nd round pick for him. If the compensation was lower I belive the Bucs would make the trade.

  5. pewter941 Says:

    Can Kupp play linebacker?

  6. Bucs Lives Matter Says:

2nd round pick for Cupp who is 31 years old and injury prone….no thanks. Unfortunately, the injury bug hit the Bucs hard this year and may cost them the playoffs. Happens to good teams every year.

  7. Mac Says:

20 plua million for Kupp and a 2nd rounder is just stupid. He is always injured and would hurt us terribly in the long run. No thanks on that!

  8. BuckyBuc Says:

    not for a 2nd rounder. More like a 5th or a 6th

  9. StormyInFl Says:

This certainly smells like Bowles’ told Licht “we’re good” and he wants to roll with “his guys”

If this is true, and they end up missing the playoffs because of it, I seriously hope that finally gets this idiot launched. As if his dumpster fire of a defense isn’t enough of a reason.

  10. heyjude Says:

    Well said, Joe.

Wishing that maybe Bowles is just gaslighting us and other teams, and then we get the big surprise a receiver and edge-rusher. I know, dreaming again.

I am on the fence about Cupp because of his high ankle injury since Sept. I did like hometown guy Diontae Johnson too. However, he has ribs and hamstring injuries. Ugh!

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Lt Dan … ‘Once again – Bowles is a genius.’

And since when does the Head Coach dictate personnel moves on the Bucs? That’s Jason Licht’s responsibility. Bowles continually gets lambasted for things that JL DOESN’T DO.

Bucs have more holes right now than a block of Swiss cheese. How about MLB? Outside CB? Nickel? WR? TE? Take your pick; our depth sucks, and right now there’s nothing being done about it, nor will there be most likely. But if you insist on pointing fingers, point in the direction of who’s responsible for stocking the cupboard.

And BTW, don’t use salary CAP as the excuse. Bucs have the 4th highest Dead CAP in the NFL at $58.0 mil this year, AND the 2nd highest Reserves charge (IR, PUP, etc) at $50.5 mil. Yet we still have $9.9 mil of salary CAP space available to make a couple of additions IF we choose. Why? Because we’ve stocked the majority of this team with cheap labor. Right now 20 Bucs have a CAP Hit under $1 mil, and an additional 15 Bucs have a CAP Hit under $2 mil. Our active 53-man payroll right now is only $131.5 mil … THE LOWEST IN THE NFL by far.

  12. First Last Says:

Maybe there is a longer plan in play that only patient minds can handle. Think of it this way, if we tank hard this year we can get rid of Bowles, promote Liam, and stack up in the draft next year. One more year with Mike and Godwin for a superbowl run under an actual offensive coach. Then hire Robert Saleh to be DC.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Go with a 2 RB set….. can put one in motion….

  14. Beeej Says:

They aren’t gonna stray from the plan, build thru the draft

  15. Commander Says:

I think it’s time to move Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to MLB. Playing OLB already requires stopping the run, playing coverage and rushing the passer. I think a change maybe good for him. And he’s a much better athlete than Britt.

  16. Tucker Says:

The difference between the bucs and the bills/chiefs is their gms think they are a piece away from being Superbowl contenders and the glazer don’t think the bucs are so they won’t trade for anyone on either side.

  17. Bucnjim Says:

I’m sure Bowles and Licht pre season conversation went something like this: Todd I’ve signed you as many good players as we could afford. This is what we have to work with this season. Let’s cross our fingers that no one gets hurt because we are very thin at most backup positions. Next season we will have a little more room to work with. Thanks, Jason Licht

  18. heyjude Says:

First Last – I agree with a lot that you commented.

However, I doubt Bowles will lose his coaching job. The team respects him, he has the locker room, and he does have a winning record.

So far, Coen is doing a good job, but he only has been Bucs OC for a short time. All in on hiring Saleh too. He might stay with the Packers though. Yes, and we have the dynamic duo next season Mike and Chris!

  19. Alanbucsfan Says:

Baker Mayfield has NOT played “splendidly” the last 2 games.
Yes, the offense has been scoring points, but the Bucs’ Defense is not good enough to withstand 2 interceptions every game.
The Decision Making needs to improve – if it does, Bucs can still make the playoffs.

  20. Jeff Says:

Let me translate this for everyone. The Glazers don’t want to spend the money. Doesn’t matter anyway. Todd Bowles defense is getting schooled week after week. Bucs should be looking at Bill B to take over.

  21. TBfan Says:

What the hell else is Bowles going to say? We’re screwed?? He above everyone knows his job is hanging by a thread not making the playoffs. These kids at WR may have their day…but it sure as hell isn’t now. If your packing it in and getting a new HC ok…but if you want to play in January this isn’t going to get it done. You lose you 2 best weapons by far and all is well…BS boys…that’s political speech…kupp or the cheetah 🐆 makes things possible…stay pat and see you next year

  22. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Why are we talking about the offense? JTS and White and a 1st round pick to Cleveland for Myles Garrett!!! Please Mr. Licht. We need a spark on defense!! Go Bucs

  23. Larrd Says:

I am looking forward to Palmer, Jarrett and MacMillan getting some catches. They have had time. Time to play. Culp seems like a slot possibility, too.

  24. Badbucs Says:

Right on point with the facts @DR, as always. As Joe was pointing out also, the teams that are serious about winning go out and get what they need to fill their needs. Looks like the plan is to be in stasis this year until we dig out from the burdensome dead cap hindering our ability to put NFL players on the field. We’re still paying for the Brady SB. FO has made the business decision to stand pat this year and suffer the consequences to improve the future. Between the dead cap and the available space, that’s 70 million not being paid to players on the field. It’s a pretty big handicap to competing with the better teams when you’re stocked with inferior players. The Bucs just can’t say it out loud for PR reasons for ticket sales and player morale. It’s amazing this ragtag collection was doing as well as it was considering the price of our talent. This is why we’re so thin at so many positions. It’s easy to criticise Bowles for many bonehead decisions but he is really having to operate at a severe disadvantage. This is a rebuild, like it or not. Front office is playing PR footsie trying to keep butts in the seats. We have been outperforming our real talent level which has played right into their narrative. The hopium has been rampant but the stark reality is now upon us. Too many holes in the dyke. It’s hard to blame them really. I’d certainly rather go 9 and 8 than 2 and 15. Go Bucs!

  25. Defense Rules Says:

TBfan … My guess is that the Bucs will be running the ball even more than we have been. IF that works, that’ll open up the short passing game for Shepard, McMillan & Palmer. Baker shouldn’t be throwing deep now unless he sees a broken coverage (it happens, just not very often). The key IMO is our OLine; how badly do they want it?

  26. BucsFan81 Says:

We going to live and die with this group and if it means the season is over then we reload in the draft and start over next season. At least we will be able to say the young guys will have experience after all this.

  27. Beeej Says:

As DR stated, our dead cap prevents us from doing much, without turning into the Saints, who are mortgaged for YEARS

  28. heyjude Says:

DR – Right on point with your comments.

Ya, lets see what Shepard, McMillan, Palmer, White, Irving, and others do now. Short passing and maybe some deep in the mix. Like another Joe post wrote about Bowles telling Baker – “Just throw to the open guy.” Defense has to step up too. Protect Baker. The Falcons are going to be coming for him.

  29. Brandon Says:

Again, I don’t think Joe understands, being a good receiver out of the backfield isn’t anything like being a slot WR and shaking a DB in coverage. I have serious doubts that White can beat man to man coverage when covered by a CB or nickle. He’s at his best leaking out of the backfield unnoticed and making moves and gaining yards after the catch. I can definitely see more 21 packages in the works, TWO RBs, but I don’t think White as a full-time slot receiver would work.

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Badbucs … Nice analysis. As tempting as it’ll be to add a WR to replace Chris, I don’t think we need to. We’d have a biger payoff IMO if we added either a MLB (replace Britt) or another CB (replace Dean) or an Edge rusher or another DT (we need more beef inside).

Trade deadline is coming up Nov 5th at 4 PM. Several teams only have 1 or 2 wins & some will be looking to move folks to gain draft picks especially. I don’t know of any MLBs available (yet), but there are several good candidates for the other positions.

o Edge: Azeez Ojulari, EDGE, New York Giants (24 years old & he’s been hot lately; Giants have 2 good Edge rushers already, so might very well be willing to move him).

o DT: Sebastian Joseph-Day, DT, Tennessee Titans (he’s only 29 and is on a 1-year, $4 mil contract; doing reasonably well; and at 6’4″ & 310 lbs he’d add some much-needed beef inside).

o CB: Greg Newsome II, CB, Cleveland Browns (he’s only 24 also and Browns need to desperately make some salary CAP space).

  31. gofortheface30 Says:

The Chiefs have a superbowl team, we do not
The Bills have a Superbowl Caliber team, we do not
The Jets are trying to maximzie the tiniest of windows with a 40 yr old quarterback
Licht loves his draftpicks, and no moves indicate that they know we are more than a player or 2 away.
Godwin is an all time good guy and and all time Buc, and Cooper Kupp is likely still a far better player even coming off of an injury. If there is one player in the NFL that runs better routes than Justin Jefferson, its THAT guy. And he his much quicker and faster than Godwin. All of that being said, it makes NO sense to go after him at this point

  32. Pewter Power Says:

    BOWLES IS NOT A GM!
Vea 29 Evans 31 Godwin 29 lvd 31 what the hell this isn’t a farm system. It’s a dumb model to keep building through the draft because in a couple of years you’ll have to use picks to eventually replace them. They are growing old, everyone is going all in and lichts playing around in the draft like those guys aren’t gonna be apart of his plan. Not to mention that he sucks at drafting pass rushers. He picked Vea at 13 that was a no brainer. Trade 4th and 5th rounders for proven talent would not hurt his long term plan or his ability to pay his guys.

  33. Buc4evr Says:

Miller is a guy that can actually catch the ball and I hope he sees some action this weekend. . McMillian is not yet starting material. The guy doesn’t have good hands. Palmer has flashes but is not consistent. Without Evan’s and Godwin this team is screwed. To make matters worse, the defense is horrible. Secondary needs help, LB’s are slow and the Edge rush is non existent. Even White is better than Britt, but the Bucs wouldn’t bring Devin back. Bowles is so stubborn that he won’t have a job next year at this rate.

  34. Badbucs Says:

I was thinking the same thing DR. WR much better to get through the draft, even into the 3rd round. Somehow we need to scare up a MLB or two THIS season. We should look at those other positions too. I don’t see the difference between using the picks in the draft or trading them for known young players of value. At least shore up the middle of defense so we don’t have to witness this carnage every week. Offense will make due.

  35. Dave Pear Says:

The resident Bloweszo apologist at it again. If Todd said “Jason we need to fortify the roster” Jason would be all in right now. Toad is the one telling him, “Naaa, we’re good, I’m such a coaching genius, we just need better communication, my schemes are indefensible when played right.”

It’s true, it is indefensible how awful the Masturmind’s defense has been ever since BA turned over a 13-4 team to the Toddster.

I’m wondering what the Vegas odds are for Todd getting fired, what day, etc. That would be easy money.

  36. PSL Bob Says:

Lt. Dan, I’m starting to get the impression you’re not a big Bowles fan. LOL

  37. Cybetsecurity_intern Says:

We need a LB or a good DE not a WR.

  38. BakerBucs says Says:

I think shep will be the link to Evans & let the rookie earn a big contract down the road

  39. adam from ny Says:

    yaya said it best:

“go out there on sunday and play for chris and mike”

    #Preach

  40. heyjude Says:

Amen to that, Adam from ny. For Chris and Mike!

  41. Bosch Says:

What they really need is a trainer that can help players minimize the likelihood of hamstring injuries.

  42. Blows sux Says:

I have a question and I wonder if someone can answer it for me.
Is this the final year of our “kick the can down the road” salary cap issues? I’m asking because of that is indeed the case it would explain why wee may not be going after people like an edge rush or a receiver

  43. BucsfaninOregon Says:

    1. Making Coen the HC would be as stupid as making our last year’s OC the head coach at Carolina. One year as a successful OC does not make a HC.
2.. We are not going to the playoffs if we don’t add somebodies to be WR or edge or edge or DB.
    3. Jason Licht is likely add nobody. It would upset the “karma” of this team.
    4. Todd B. would not know how to integrate a new “high caliber” player into his “fine tuned” defense (or offense). Does anyone think that he could successfully replace JTS with Miles Garret? Does Garret know how to drop into coverage and not cover anybody? JTS is treated like a star- -why replace a star?
    5. Robert Saleh was a great DC for the 49rs. Hire him as a consultant and force Bowels to use him as DC.
    6. Hire a new HC in off season or when we crash and burn this year.
    7. Injuries can gut a team. This is our year, 49rs too.

  44. Will Says:

Lol go out give up draft capital for Myles Garrett so that our genius of a coach can have him dropping into coverage instead of rushing the QB which he’s one of the best in the game at. I’m tired of Bowels and this defense. Offense is finally putting up points and this defense continues to get torched. How many drafts has he had to build the defense?

  45. Lightningvinny Says:

My guess is the O can still score 24-34 points a game ,,, it’s the Swiss cheese D that can’t stop anyone ,,,
Bowles can’t bow out like this ,,, he’s got to do better ,, something is missing

  46. Smashsquatch Says:

Rachaad in the slot is the answer. Two questions: 1. Can he be an effective blocker from the slot and play with the edge needed for the run game? 2. Can he speed up his footwork? When you think of Deebo and CG playing in the slot, both those guys play with a sense of urgency and a willingness to put their face in the fan. Rachaad has all the tools to do the same, but needs to approach the game with a different mentality. Now is the time to shine Mr White. RBs have a short window to earn their cash. Go get it!

  47. Jeff Says:

Atlanta 37 Yucs 17. Atlanta asserts itself as the Alpha of the lowly NFC South.

  48. drdneast Says:

The Bucs didn’t lose against the Ravens because they lost Evans or Godwin, they lost because of the stinko defense that Bowles and Licht put together. The same reason they lost against the Falcons and the Broncos. Licht’s crummy high draft picks on the defense suck and Bowels has to compensate for their poor play by blitzing on a majority of plays leaving the defensive backs exposed. Bowels complicated schemes also lead to a lot of miscommunication which causes a lot of busted coverages. I for one am tired of both and both need to be given the home version of the Buccaneer board game as they exit the building.

  49. Nick2 Says:

I love Jason Licht, but he’s way too conservative. He pulled off the JPP move but he should have done something this year!!!!

  50. Bill in Seminole Says:

We had a high-end running back/receiver some years ago, and it worked. Michael Pittman (Sr) was an effective receiver and runner. Rachad White can do the same.

  51. BUCS4EVER Says:

Rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic

  52. Gotti-Dog-05-20-84 Says:

Playing the long game…..this year, IMHO, was always going to be a dress rehearsal for next season to allow the newer players and the new offense to meld together.

I believe that included the anticipation of Godwin being re-signed for 2025+

So now that Godwin has gone down and Evans is sidelined it forces the newer guys to step up….or step out. And that includes guys on defense as well.

Thinking long term….what implications could occur by bringing in a higher profile receiver? Learning curve on the offense, higher salary cap concerns, disruption of team unity and cohesion, change of plans for 2025 roster moves….to name a few possibilities.

Assuming the plan for next season included bringing Godwin back, it may very well be that the odds of him re-signing with the Bucs have now increased and the cost of bringing him back may have decreased slightly.

If they want a receiver with familiarity and rapport with Mayfield and the ability to adapt to a new system rather quickly on a this season only deal maybe they could talk Rashard Higgins out of retirement…..(I’m kidding!!…….kind of)

  53. Ol' Boy Says:

Stand pat. It makes sense at this point. An expensive receiver won’t fix the defense and I see it costing to much money to plug the leaks. Save the money and use this time remaining in the season to give the rooks experience going into next year. And at that time we will have money as well. It’ll be a good year.
I’ll find enjoyment in this season watching these kids develop on the field.

  54. Bobby Says:

Just like Jim Mora said in 1998 at the infamous press conference and he said what is now the infamous quote, Playoffs!!? Playoffs!!? I can’t even go there right now Joe. Bowles refusal to add an edge rusher is frustrating.

  55. Beeej Says:

We weren’t gonna go far WITH Mike and Chris. There’s zero upside in wasting money now

  56. Saskbucs Says:

We need more draft capital and more cap space not less. You never want to punt on a season and we aren’t but things just got a lot tougher with the injuries we have endured.

The NFC will still be wide open next year. 4 of the top 10 teams, by next year could be 4 of top 8, play in one division. We all hoped our SB window was back open this season but it’s always been 2025. I guarantee that this team becomes more aggressive starting March 2025. Need a great draft and need to sign a couple blue chip players. Licht is more than capable.

We are young and have a lot of guys locked up. Between draft and FA we need a couple MLB, a couple DL/Edge, a LG, a couple CBs and Godwin. 8 players fill our most important gaps. Easily doable for a top 5 GM in the league. Bowles a part of that equation remains to be seen.

  57. garbs65 Says:

If our defense was solid, not great, just solid, I would agree. The running game is producing and maybe with the receivers we have left we could be respectable. But, our defense is porous…at best. We need to be ready for the remaining offenses we face to have “record” numbers for that specific franchise. I don’t recall the Glazers/Licht ever making an acquisition during the season…maybe I’m wrong. Given the glaring holes in both the offense and defense, perhaps we would need to add more than 1 capable player and makes it difficult. Seems like Licht/Glazers have decided to let it play out and aim for next season. Let’s face it…we aren’t beating the Ravens…or KC. It would take alot for the Bucs to make it more than one round in the playoffs, let alone make it to the SB, which is the target/goal, right?

  58. Jeagan1999 Says:

I noticed that Ben Skowronek is on the Steelers’ practice squad. He is 27 years old, 6 foot 3 inches, and played with Baker on the Rams in 2022. Why don’t we take him?

  59. Jeagan1999 Says:

So is Donovan Peoples-Jones are the Lions practice squad.

    He wouldn’t offend me either….

  62. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs are 4-3 with 10 games to go. If we break even the rest of the way, we’ll be 9-8 with a chance to make the playoffs. IF we can beat the Falcons Sunday, then the Panthers twice & Saints once more, we’d only need 1 more win to get to 9-8 (playing the Chiefs, 49ers, Giants, Raiders, Chargers, Cowboys in those other games).

This is still doable IOW, providing we win out in the NFC South. Gut feel though is that we’ll have to change our offensive approach somewhat now that Evans & Godwin are down to make that happen.

In our 4 wins, the run-pass ratio was 45.6% but it was only 35.1% in our 3 losses. We were able to control the tempo of the game in our wins IMO largely because we got ahead & stayed ahead in our wins (we were ahead at the half in 3 of our 4 wins).
But the reverse held true in our losses (we were behind at the half in 2 of our 3 losses so we passed to catch up). We also averaged only 1.0 turnover/game in our 4 wins, but averaged 1.67 turnovers/game in our 3 losses, and all but 1 of those turnovers were interceptions. Significant differences.

I’d bet that we’ll be running the ball a lot more from here on out, as in OVER a 50% run-pass. We do best when we control the tempo of the game from the git-go, and end the 1st half with a lead. We’ve got the OLine to make that work, and the RBs to make that work, and the QB to make that work. Use the run to set up the pass; not vice versa. Free the big uglies!

  63. Mike Johnson Says:

Nothing matter for now but beating the Falcons. This is where our coaches need to step up. Both Cohen and Bowles. If it were ever a time for Bowles to come up with an aggressive defensively plan, the time is now. And Cohen needs to have a few surprises up his sleeves come Sunday. Its going to take a hellava effort to beat the Falcons. Raheem Morris just said this morning, They are ready.

  64. DBS Says:

This defense isn’t going to hold anyone except Carolina under 30 points. Every team has the film how to beat them. Sorry but I think it’s going to be ugly now The Bucs won’t make any moves at all.

  65. Rod Munch Says:

Todd Bowles understands the secret to winning games: the punter. While everyone else gets distracted by offense and defense, Bowles knows the real game-changer is field position. With just an extra 2.3 yards per punt, you can transform a defense that gives up 30 points per game into one that only allows 12. That’s right—12 points! And when your defense gives up less, your offense can take it easy. It’s all about the punter, folks. The critics? They’re just not paying attention.

This message was brought to you by the Todd Bowles for President Foundation. Numbers are estimates based on a best-case scenario where math works in our favor. Results may vary. Opposing offenses may score more than 12 points.

  66. Council Rudolph Says:

Sometimes loyalty is bringing in others and paying what they are worth to YOU. Licht is brilliant at making picks and building the team through loyalty. Be loyal to Mayfield and give him WRs. LVD is probably the most deserving of any Buc. Now with no help, you see # 54 chasing other people’s guys. I paid a premium to a tree company Saturday. I could’ve waited for prices to come down, but I care about me and my family and we want our home to be special. Is it loyal to Mike Evans if he misses the playoffs because we are loyal to our practice squad. It’s ok to pay over the appraised value if it’s best for the whole team. Hearts in the right place, just do what’s best for Bucs now.

  67. Statguy Says:

Even if they intend to you wouldn’t come out and say that because you want to negotiate from a position of strength. This is the national football league , not your fantasy football league with your buddies from high school
