Sean Tucker: “Mentality” Of Offense Has Changed

October 18th, 2024

At times last year, it seemed like former Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales tried to lull opponents to sleep.

Not so this year if you listen to Bucs running back Sean Tucker, who was named “NFC Offensive Player of the Week” for his game against the slimy Saints.

To be specific, Tucker said Liam Coen has instilled a different attitude.

“I would say our mentality has changed and Coach Liam [Coen] coming in and getting everybody right with his system, and a lot of guys up front and our [wide] receivers just have a different mentality when it comes to running,” Tucker said. “We’re coming into games trying to run the ball and pressure our opponents.”

The last phrase to Joe was key. Pressure opponents.

Coen seems to keep defenses on their toes and is intent on hitting explosive plays. Joe isn’t sure that was Canales’ goal. It’s like his primary goal was to pound the ball between the guards as if he was trying to run the clock out.

But passing, Canales had more of a downfield mentality than Coen. But again, Joe cannot whine about the Bucs being a dink-and-dunk offense when the results are this good.

Having a run game is gonna make every facet of this team better including the defense, including the pass rush why because we’re gonna become more of a physical team and hopefully with quick starts, we’re gonna force teams into a situation where we know they’re gonna pass.

Let’s keep it all in perspective, they played a bad, old, slow Aints team. Against Detroit and Denver this offense was giving me PTSD flashbacks of Byron Leftwich.
Heck even the 2nd half vs a Raheem Morris D they weren’t great.

Team needs to become consistent and with Todd Blows in charge they will always be out coached so another coach or unit needs to be able to over come that handicap

  3. Yar Says:

The biggest difference I see is the play calling. Coen keeps them guessing so they have to defend both run and pass every play.

Out coached is probably the most overused term on this blog. What does it even mean? Does that mean every time we lose we were out coached? Meaning that every time we win the other team was out coached? It’s too simplistic of a catch-all phrase. Lazy analysis. If there are specific instances where someone can actually point out a coaching miscue, that’s fine. But don’t use it as an umbrella term without details.

  7. Baking with Coen Says:

Attack mentality keeping the defense in the toes is awesome.

    Let’s Tuck, Buck and Bake!!!

  8. Tim Says:

This offense to me seems like the 49er’s offense of the early 90’s. West coast, short to intermediate passing, lots of motion, not so many vertical passes. Worked then, and it looks like it works now too.

  9. BucU Says:

    Good riddance to Dave Canales.

  10. A Bucs Fan Says:

Liam Coen is a Mark Whipple disciple with a graduate education from Swan McVay.

Canales didn’t put me to sleep. He had me howling at the radio in frustration. He would not open up the offense, and then there was the infamous first down run up the middle. Good thing I have low BP. Coen is showing creativity with an offense that can do it. Monday Nite? We’ll need it.

  12. Coburn Says:

We are also better at screens these days.

  13. Larrd Says:

Maybe once Evans and Palmer are healthy they will take more verticle shots.

So far so good! The Bucs need all hands on deck to keep up with the Ravens. That includes the coaches and trainers to! Should be a good game!

  15. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Coen seems to keep defenses on their toes and is intent on hitting explosive plays. Joe isn’t sure that was Canales’ goal.’

I definitely prefer Coen’s approach over Canales’ Joe, but to be fair, Canales didn’t have Bucky last year, plus we’ve reworked our OLine & it’s more experienced now. Tucker also spent the year on the Practice Squad or on the bench (32 total offensive snaps).

Last nights game again showed how bad the Saints defense is playing. Sure, Buck and Tuck are playing well but really a lot of the Bucs running success was on the Saints defense. I’m going to curb my enthusiasm.

The Ravens game will be trench warfare. The Bucs need to play at least even in the trenches and win the turnover battle. Hopefully it will be hot and loud!!! LFG!

How are you people still talking bad about Todd ? Last time I checked , the AINTS were completely shut down in the second half. That’s called Halftime adjustments ! Don’t get it twisted on the AINTS being a bad defense either. They were top 10 in almost everything and number one red zone defense before our Bucs beat them down. All that did was allow Sean “PunchableLips” Payton to watch the film and do the same. Todd is a dam good coach, and Liam is lightyears ahead of ol Davey boy . Go Bucs

The Saints were/are dealing with a load of injuries so this “progress” is an illusion, for now. We have to run into a good defense that is putting out it’s best before I buy the hype

Love me some Sean Tucker. Homeboy is a gamer.

I hope the glaziers and Jason can somehow lock up liam Cohen to some kind of a multi-year contract my concern is is that someone is going to try to steal him to be a head coach somewhere we don’t need to have rotating door on offensive coordinators

  21. Danati74 Says:

To be honest I wasn’t the biggest Todd Bowles Fan. I love in NY and am a Bucs Fan. I remember his press conferences and was like WTF. He wasn’t my favorite coach, but I got to give him big credit. I mean 3 Conference winding 3 years is good. The Bucs look inconsistent, but they are 4-2. So even with negatives,…the positives still outweigh the negatives. So he is exceeding expectations so far. To me he is a good coach. Sure he gets burned from time to time. But as a head coach look how many OC he has had, BL, DC, now Liam. All Rookie or very young OCs…but he continues to get it done. But the SB is the hump ..Im voting for him. Best
